Welcome back everyone, I hope that you'll enjoy this chapter here! Just reminding anyone who hasn't been here in a while that I'll still try to answer as many reviews as I can. I just ask that you try and keep them constructive.

And now, we have officially arrived at the Battle City arc. Like, as in the ACTUAL arc has began. We shall be seeing characters from the anime Duel, so I'm hoping that I get their Duels down ok. Things should be easier as I have a list of cards to work with…? Maybe…? Eh, don't quote me on that. Also, we still have no new information on Yugioh 9, which is a shame.

Guest - Well Eric may not be able to get a better deck, but better cards are still available. It'd just be really, really expensive to go through so many packs to get particular cards, which is currently holding Eric back.

Spawn Spider - Thank you for the kind words! And thank you for pointing out that mistake!

Zarbonic - I agree that they are the least important finalists, but I won't spoil anything. And yeah, I kinda agree with your choice of Playmaker.

Guest - Kaiba is a good choice. He got quite good in DSOD. But Raphael? Well, he does have the hardest deck to work with I suppose. And he did beat Yugi.

Shagdoge - Hey man, I'm not forcing you to read the 'yapping' at the beginning of each chapter.

Guest - Certainly some interesting choices for archetypes. But I will not reveal anything!

Cinna-Puff - Aw, thank you for the praise! It means a lot to see! I really hope you enjoy this chapter!

Darkpheniox343 - I won't lie and say that the LV cards slipped past my mind. Thank you for the idea!

Guest - If that happened, it would probably be the ultimate humiliation for Kaiba, XD.

Anyways, enough rambling from me, on with the story!

Chapter 8: Battle City Begins!

Eric Yuriko:

I made sure to wake up extra early today for Battle City. Really, I just had to be in Domino Plaza at around noon, as I believe that was when Kaiba officially states the beginning of the tournament. Before then, I'd pick up Calian and we'd both head to the Plaza. The plan was that we'd still split up, as we'd both struggle to get Duels if we keep sticking together. That hadn't changed.

I had done some more thinking about how my actions may interfere with the other finalists, and after much inter debate, my plan was to just try and take the tournament as it comes. I figured it was incredibly difficult to try and manage between so many different characters. Also I can't imagine there being any external factors that'll end up completely changing the tournament – well, other than me and Calian. But I was being careful, and Calian knew better than to challenge someone like Yugi immediately. I had drilled that into him throughout our time together.

At 11:00 AM, I picked up Calian, not seeing Sophia up at her window, nor did she see him away. Calian didn't seem bothered by this though, he quickly hurried to get into my car so we could get going. I'd just park somewhere quiet that's not too far away from Domino and head back there at the end of the day.

On the drive to Domino Plaza, I made sure to test Calian regarding our plan for Battle City.

"Ok, so what were some of the things that I told you to remember going into this?"

"Well the tournament is lasting three days, so I don't need to win all my Duels in one day. But… if I wait until day three, I'll end up facing much more powerful Duelists. All the weaker ones will be eliminated." Calian recalled with a nod.

"Yup. But you also have to remember that all of these people were handpicked by Kaiba. Don't expect any fourth-rate Duelists here." I reminded Calian, keeping my eyes fixed on the road.

'Though seriously Kaiba, you picked BONZ for your tournament. Surely there were better options available?' I thought, struggling to understand his logic.

"Ok, what else did I say?" I spoke back up as we drove under a bridge. We were getting a bit closer now.

"It may be best if we split up. I wouldn't want us trying to tear each other down, or holding the other back." Calian recalled. "We should just phone each other when we win a Duel, but we should probably conceal the rare cards that we end up winning from each other." He suggested smartly. "Wouldn't want to give everything away, you know?"

I chucked, already knowing what a majority of the Duelists would be winning. "Let's just say that I may have a good knack for knowing what you cards you may end up going for. But still, I don't know how many rare Warrior Type monsters around here."

"Gah, you don't know that." Calian grumbled with irritation. "By the end of today, I'll have a super strong Warrior Type monster!"

"We'll see." I said with a smile as we were just passing Domino Plaza. I saw plenty Duelists, but I was going too fast to recognise any of them. "Alright, what's the final thing that we agreed on?"

"No Dueling each other until we end up making it to the finals!" Calian said with a firm nod. "It'll feel all the sweeter when I get some payback from losing against you last week!"

I laughed at his confidence. "Well that is if you make it into the finals." I challenged with a smirk.

Calian returned the gesture. "We'll see Eric. Who knows, maybe you'll be cheering me on throughout the tournament finals."

I had parked the car, and switched off the engine. "If you keep up that attitude you may end up getting two Locator Cards today instead of just one. I'm interested to seeing what you can do these next three days. You are a good duelist Calian."

'But HOW good when compared to the other characters, I wonder?' I thought with curiosity. 'I suppose I'll have my answer by the end of this tournament.'

Calian got out of the car, as I too exited and locked the doors. "Well, I have been editing my deck for a few hours now. I would have probably stayed up till midnight if my sis hadn't barged into my room and started yelling at me." He huffed, as if she were doing something wrong.

"I think she may have been looking out for you there." I corrected Calian with a raised eyebrow as we walked to Domino Plaza.

"Hm, all I did was lose track of time…" Calian crossed his arms. "I bet I would have assembled the perfect deck if she hadn't told me to get to sleep. So what if I was having some nice music in the background?"

'…Yes, that may have been the issue depending on how lord it was.' I thought with a sigh as we crossed a street.

Domino Plaza was just ahead of us, and the time was 11:43 AM. It probably wasn't long now. Kaiba would be here any minute now. As approached the edge of the Plaza, I held a hand in front of Calian. "How about we hang back here. If we just go wandering into the Plaza, we'll attract all sorts of bad attention. Too many strong Duelists." I clarified. Perhaps it was being too paranoid, but it was better to be safe than sorry.

"I mean, I guess? We won't be waiting that long anyway." Calian shrugged as he sat down on a bench. As he did that, I remained standing, looking around to see any familiar faces.

Moving my eyes through the crowd, I came across a few familiar faces from the show:

First, I was able to see Espa Roba, with his fingers on his head. I guess he was even trying to fool himself into thinking that his 'psychic powers' were the real deal. His siblings were nowhere to be seen, so I guess they were already in a vantage point. Far ahead from me, sitting at a little table drinking some tea was definitely the Rare Hunter that beat Joey yesterday. He was sipping his tea and was clicking through that laptop he had. No idea what Marik was thinking saying that this guy was his weakest Rare Hunter, he had a fully stacked Exodia deck! With his data on all the other Duelists, it was a miracle that Yugi took him out before he did more damage. I did try to look for Joey, but he must have not arrived yet.

But then… I thought saw someone standing behind a group of people. I was looking at his left side, so his face was obscured from me. But I could still clearly see his long pink hair and rose that he held.

'The fuck!? Don't tell me that's-'

I was immediately distracted by the sound of a cry coming from my right, I instinctively turned and saw that it was Weevil being basically chokeheld by Mako Tsunami. I also saw Rex Raptor, Mai Valentine and Yugi.

'Wait, forget them! Who was it that I saw earlier!?' I immediately turned back around and saw that the man had disappeared completely. Was I imagining things here? Because, if HE was here, I could hardly imagine how much would be changed throughout Battle City. Hoping that I was actually seeing things earlier, I turned back around to face the people I previously turned away from.

I didn't care much about Weevil, Rex, Mako and Mai but my eyes did linger on Yugi. It was funny; while most of the characters in the anime struggled to tell the difference between him and the pharaoh, I could determine immediately that I was looking at Yugi Muto and not the pharaoh. Maybe it was because I already knew the fact that he had a five-thousand-year-old spirit inside of him. Speaking of which, would the fact that I know the pharaoh's name possibly complicate the Egypt Arc? Hmm, fuck knows, as long as he returns safely to the afterlife.

I saw that Rex, Weevil, Mako and Yugi all split off from each other, trying to escape everyone's company. Mai stuck behind in Domino Plaza. A few more minutes passed, until…

"Greetings Duelists, welcome to Battle City."

"…! Kaiba!" I stated, surprised by how loud his voice actually was. Calian jumped to his feet and moved to stand next to me.

"Ah, where is he!?" He wondered looking around in all directions except one.

"Wrong way Calian. Look up." I suggested, as I looked up and saw that huge blimp that would be the location of the quarter finals. On the side I saw the huge smirking face of Seto Kaiba.

"It's time to put your Dueling skills to the test. I hope that none of you entered my tournament, looking for friendly competition, cause Battle City is gonna be an all-out war." He stated sternly. "Before my Battle City tournament begins, I thought I'd let you all know what you're in for incase you wanna back out now."

I saw Calian clench his fist. "Fat chance!" He yelled up to Kaiba. Several other Duelists did the same.

"Bring it Kaiba!"

"We ain't backing down!"

"As if!"

"Let's begin with my new Duel Disks. Everyone who I decided was good enough to enter received one, you can Duel anytime anywhere. In fact, they contain a tracking chip that allows me to watch every move you make. Next, let's talk about the most important tournament rule. The loser of each Duel is required to forfeit up their rarest card to the winner. If you don't have the guts to risk losing your rarest cards, then I suggest you forfeit now." Kaiba sneered.

There were lots of murmurs across the people around us. Yet no-one seemed to be backing down.

"And anyone who's foolish enough can challenge me to a Duel, because I'll also be competing in this tournament. But don't get your hopes up, because I intend to win, and there are two Duelists I can't wait to defeat." Kaiba announced. I couldn't help but swear I saw him look down at me as he said that.

"And speaking of winning, only the eight best Duelists will make it to the final round. And these finals will be held in a hidden location. In order to find the finals, you'll need these Locator Cards. You each received one with your Duel Disk, but don't get too excited because one's not enough. You'll need six of them to make it to the tournament finals." Kaiba declared. "Every time you win a Duel, you win a Locator Card from your opponent. When six cards are stacked together, they produce a map of Battle City, and active a global positioning satellite which will transmit the location to you." Kaiba then smirked. "But the tournament finals are to be held in two days, and most of you will be eliminated way before that."

"Alright, everything I just said and more can be found in my tournament rulebook. Just remember, only one player can win and claim the title of number one Duelist in the world." Everyone began to yell up at Kaiba, accepting his challenge.

"Now get ready Duelists… Let the tournament, begin!" Kaiba yelled as the screen cut to black and the blimp flew away.

'So it begins.' I thought, narrowing my eyes as the blimp flew away.

As soon as Kaiba's blimp left, almost all the Duelists either began to run off to find people to Duel, or get discuss what Kaiba said there. Calian just grinned like he had been waiting for this his whole life.

"This is gonna be awesome! I've been waiting for this day for too long!" He said with excitement.

"Just don't get too carried away." I hinted, as I saw him turning away from me. "Oh, leaving already?"

"Yeah, I gotta explore the whole of Domino to find Duelists. There's only forty-eight Duelists in this tournament, and they're all scattering about right now." He explained. "Don't worry, I'll let you know if anything comes up on my end!"

"Same with me. You stay safe out there. There are a few rotten Duelists in this tournament." I informed him with a nod.

"I will!" Calian began to walk away from me. "See ya Eric!"

"See you around Calian." I waved as he left.

'Well, here's hoping he does well enough. I guess with him out of the way I can try and focus on myself for the time being. I need to try and make sure I don't end up changing too much in the timeline.' I thought as I looked around. I could make out Joey confronting the Rare Hunter that Yugi ends up Dueling. 'Might be best if I get out of Domino Plaza, maybe I can find some generic no-named Duelist for me to Duel.'

2 Hours Later:

'This must be some sort of joke. I've been wandering for ages now and I've still yet to find a Duelist.' I thought with annoyance as I looked around. I was in Domino Park right now, and it was mostly quiet, only a few people were moving around.

'There's only forty-eight registered participants in Battle City. Marik and the Rare Hunter cheat their way in, so that would mean that's a couple more stragglers running around.' I realised quite suddenly. 'But how would they have dealt with the Locator Cards? Ah, they probably stole some and then did their best to forge them. The tournament finals were more of a backup plan for Marik anyway in case he couldn't beat the pharaoh before then.'

'No matter how many Rare Hunters are here, the main thing is that Marik isn't here yet. He's still to arrive to Domino City on that cute little boat he had. I'd be smart to stay well away from him when he does get here.' I decided, not wanting to try and mess with a millennium item wielder. Getting my mind controlled was a big no-no.

'Then again, nearly none of this matters right now. I still need to try and find someone to Duel.'

My ears then caught an interesting sound from not too far away. It was the sound of a scream, but not a very serious one. Rather a scream of defeat.

I immediately turned and saw a holographic explosion ahead of some trees. 'Bingo.' I thought with a smirk. I quickly made my way across the path that led through the trees, where I saw what I had been hoping to find for a while now.

In a small clearing there were two Duelists with a crowd of people around them. One of them was a kid on his knees, with a look of defeat around him. Across from him was the victor of this Duel, and it was someone that I hadn't expected to see. Then again, we never saw her win any of her Battle City Duels.

I was able to recognise her instantly; purple eyes, long, thick and spiky blonde hair with large silver hoop earrings. For clothing she wore a sleeveless light purple vest and a white tank top with long white fingerless gloves. Underneath that, she wore a dark purple miniskirt and a Deck holder strapped to her thigh. She had a victorious smirk on her face.

Mai Valentine had just won a Duel here.

There were a few murmurs and whispers from the crowd at her victory there. Mai approached the Duelist that she defeated and held out her hand. The kid looked happy at the held up, and reached out to take Mai's hand.

Mai immediately retracted her hand however. "Not so fast kiddo. Rare card and Locator Card. I did win you know." She reminded the boy.

"Gah, I know! Here, take them both!" The boy sighed in defeat as he handed Mai his rarest card and Locator Card. "You beat me fair and square. That's me out of the tournament now."

"Like you ever had a shot at winning when I was playing in it." Mai stated coolly as she examined the two cards she got. She placed that rare card in her deck holder and put her Locator Card in her pocket. The boy walked away from the scene, as he had now been eliminated. Along with him, the crowd that had been watching had also began to disperse.

As they all walked away, Mai brushed herself off as she looked around. "Two down, four to go. Now I just need to find another Duelist to defeat." She said to herself. As she looked around at the disappearing crowd of people, her eyes landed on me – or rather my Duel Disk.

Despite only having a second to think about this, many thoughts ran through my head of whether this may be a good idea or not. Assuming that Mai did want to try and win another Locator Card, and challenged me, should I accept? She'd be my first canon opponent, and while she and Bakura were probably the weakest Duelists out of the eight finalists, she was still much more skilled than the kids I Dueled against when I first arrived here. I could back away, try and find someone else… or…

I smirked and raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Interested in what you see?"

Mai gave a deadpan look as she waved her hand dismissively. "Not you hun, rather your Duel Disk. You're a Duelist in Battle City right?" She questioned with curiosity.

"That's right. As a matter of fact, I've been looking for a Duelist to Duel." I answered, hoping she'd understand what I was wanting here.

"Are you now?" Mai eyed me with interest. "You feeling lucky today? I've just won my first Duel here, and I'm hoping to make a bit of a win streak. The quicker I get into the finals, the better."

"Really?" I remarked, walking forwards. "I've not won a Duel here yet, and I'd like to get a win under my belt before the end of first day. You sure you want to challenge me here? I'm no slouch, I'll tell you that much."

Mai just chuckled a little. "Trust me kid, I've faced far stronger Duelists than you ever have."

'Oh she has no idea. None of these people know the absolute nightmares of Tier 0's I've faced off against back in my world.' I thought with an internal sigh. 'Summoning two monsters in a turn is hardly a move that'll shake me.'

"Well, I've faced some rather tricky opponents myself." I corrected her. "But I say we cram the antics. How about we actually get to Dueling?"

Mai smirked. "Perfect. Name your rarest card."

I held up my Gogiga Gagagigo. "This'd be it right here. My Gogiga Gagagigo. And I've only got one Locator Card." I said, interested to see how Mai would react to my waged card. While Gogiga Gagagigo wasn't as close to me as my Taladon cards, it could act as a good safety net for if I ever did lose a Duel. I could hand away that card, while keeping my more powerful Taladon cards safe in my deck. Maybe it was wrong to use Eric's favourite card like that… but it was that, or boxing the damn thing. And while he didint exactly synergise well with my Taladon cards, he was still a good beatstick.

Mai definitely looked interested by what I had held up. "Well, that is rare, I'll give you that kid. My rarest card is Harpie's Feather Duster." She announced holding up her spell card.

'That'd be perfect for my deck. Almost nobody in all of the Yugiverse played backrow removal. It's real weird how Mai kept losing when she had that card in her deck. If she's not going to use it, then I may as well put it to better use.' I thought, growing a smirk.

"Hah, that's a nice card you got there. But it'll be in my deck by the end of the day." I declared with confidence. "But at least you won't have opponents harassing you with challenges when I take that card out of your deck and add it to mine."

"As if." Mai said dryly. "Alright, here's the deal: We'll each wager those cards, as well as a single Locator Card. Sound good to you?"

"I was just thinking about that. I accept." I agreed, now preparing myself for my first ever Duel against a character from the anime. This would be a good way to see where I stand compared to the other characters.

"Good, because that was the only offer I was planning on making." Mai revealed as she got out her deck. I got mine out and we both swapped decks and began to shuffle them. The crowd from earlier had completely vanished, so it was just me and Mai in this area of Domino Park.

'Off the top of my head, the only cards that Mai have that'll be trouble for me are Mirror Wall and Harpie's Feather Duster. She did have Amazoness and Harpie cards, but Amazoness's didn't get that much support until the Tyler Sisters in Arc-V, and Harpie's only got support years after that!' I thought carefully, trying to recall her cards. 'Well, at least she isn't willing to gamble away all her Locator Cards in this one Duel. It means there's a chance she'll still make it into the quarter finals.' I finished shuffling her deck and we handed each other our decks back.

"You ready to lose?" I questioned with a challenged raise of my eyebrow.

"I hope you're ready to hand over your Gogiga Gagagigo after this Duel is done." Mai rebutted smoothly as we walked a good distance apart from each other. We turned to face each other as we activated our Duel Disks.

"Let's go! Time to Duel!"

-Eric VS Mai-

Eric LP: 4000 – Mai LP: 4000

"I'll start this Duel off! My move!" Mai yelled as she drew her card. She looked over her hand, moving her fingers through the cards. "I summon Amazoness Fighter in Attack Mode!"

To Mai's field appeared a strong and bulky female warrior in rather tribal armour. [Amazoness Fighter – 1500/1300] Mai smirked. "I'll end my turn with a facedown. Your move."

"That's all? For a finalist in Duelist Kingdom I did expect more." I smirked. "My move!" I drew my card and looked at my hand.

'Tch. This hand could have been better.' I thought with an internal scowl, looking at what I had. Sakuretsu Armour, Cloning, Luster Dragon, Giga Gagagigo, Dancing Fairy and I just drew Twin-Headed Behemoth. 'At least most of my high LV monsters are in my hand right now, it means I won't draw them going forwards in this Duel.'

'I need to try and be careful here. Mai has Harpie's Feather Duster which can nuke my whole backrow if I'm too reckless with my facedown spell and traps.'

"I'll set a monster facedown, and one card facedown as well!" I declared. "That'll end my turn."

Mai raised an eyebrow. "Please, and you criticised me for my last move? It's my turn!" She said as she drew a card. Mai didn't take as long to make a move this time. "I summon Cyber Harpie Lady in Attack Mode!"

Mai summoned arguably her most iconic monster – a Harpie with long wings wearing cyber armour to protect itself. [Cyber Harpie Lady – 1800/1300]

"Hold it right there! I activate Cloning!" I said, revealing my facedown card. Mai frowned, seemingly knowing the effect. "This card will let me summon a monster that has the same ATK, DEF and LV as the monster you just summoned." To my side of the field appeared a replica of Cyber Harpie Lady. [Clone Token - 1800/1300]

"So, I can't attack you directly this turn. Not too bad for someone who looked like they just picked up a deck." Mai said, trying to mess with me. It was a rather terrible attempt.

'Please. For the record I've been doing this whole thing for much longer than you have Mai.' I thought with a sigh. 'But she was right in saying that she can't attack me directly. My Clone Token will at least stop her from that.'

"I can still attack your facedown monster however! Attack it now Cyber Harpie Lady!" Mai ordered to her monster. Cyber Harpie Lady leapt upwards and slashed downwards at my facedown monster. It was revealed to be Twin-Headed Behemoth. [Twin-Headed Behemoth – 1500/1200] It was destroyed, but he wouldn't be gone for long.

"I'll end my turn." Mai said. "Meaning your Twin-Headed Behemoth will return with only 1000 ATK and DEF."

"You took the words right out of my mouth." I grinned as my monster reappeared at my side of the field, albeit weaker. [Twin-Headed Behemoth – 1000/1000]

"Now that he's back on my field, I think I'll make my move!" I said, drawing a card. This should be a good. "I'll tribute my Twin-Headed Behemoth to summon Luster Dragon in Attack Mode!" I yelled holding out a hand to my field. Twin-Headed Behemoth was banished as Luster Dragon came to take his place. [Luster Dragon – 2400/1400]

'Because of the effect of Cloning, if I destroy Cyber Harpie Lady, my Clone Token will also be destroyed. But I can still destroy Mai's Amazoness Fighter.' I decided, looking at her monster.

"Time to battle! Go Luster Dragon, attack and destroy Amazoness Fighter!" I shouted, pointing at Amazoness Fighter.

"It won't be that easy! I activate my facedown card, Amazoness Archers!" Mai declared as she revealed her facedown trap. I grimaced, barely remembering the effect. "This card will cause all of your monsters to lose 500 ATK points, also all monsters you have on the field must attack this turn!"

I scowled under my breath as the change in ATK occurred. [Luster Dragon ATK: 2400 – 1900] [Clone Token ATK: 1800 – 1300]

"So you lowered my monsters' ATK points. My Luster Dragon is still powerful enough to destroy either of your monsters, but I'll keep my previous attack going and destroy your Amazoness Fighter!" I decided, keeping with my original plan.

As Luster Dragon attacked Amazoness Fighter with a fireball, Mai smiled. "Well, my Amazoness Fighter effect will mean that I won't be taking any damage here." She stated as her monster was destroyed. "You on the other hand, still have a monster to attack with!"

As she said that, my Clone Token was forced to attack Cyber Harpie Lady on Mai's field. It was overpowered and destroyed with a slash, dealing me damage.

Eric LP: 4000 – 3500

"It doesn't matter if you dealt me the first damage of the Duel. I still have plenty of cards left in my deck." I proclaimed boldly. "Now, I'll end my turn with a facedown."

"You've been nothing but a small headache for me so far. Time for me to take you out of this tournament!" Mai smirked as she drew her card and looked at it. "Here goes, I summon Amazoness Paladin in Attack Mode!" Mai summoned another Amazoness monster, this one looking rather proud with its armour as it held a large blade. [Amazoness Paladin – 1700/300] She gained 100 extra ATK as there was an Amazoness Monster on the field. [Amazoness Paladin ATK: 1700 – 1800]

"And what can that warrior of yours do exactly?" I questioned with suspicion.

"Nothing yet, not until I activate this spell card, Amazoness Spellcaster!" Mai answered as she played a spell card. "This card will let me switch the ATK of one Amazoness monster I control with a monster you control!"

"What?" I gasped as Luster Dragon lost some of his ATK, while Amazoness Paladin grew just a little bit stronger. [Luster Dragon ATK: 1900 – 1800] [Amazoness Paladin ATK: 1800 – 1900]

"Time to do some damage! Attack Luster Dragon Amazoness Paladin!" Mai declared, pointing a finger forwards. Amazoness Paladin shot forwards, preparing to use her huge blade to slay Luster Dragon.

"As if I'd let that happen, I activate Sakuretsu Armour!" I shouted as I revealed my trap card. "This will destroy your monster! So much for dealing me damage." I said with a tut. Amazoness Paladin was destroyed before she could even reach Luster Dragon.

Mai frowned at that, but she didn't look too worried. "Well if that's the case, I'll end my turn with this card facedown. Of course, that'll mean that Luster Dragon gains his ATK back – not that it's a huge difference." [Luster Dragon ATK: 1800 – 1900]

I smiled. "Every point helps in this game. My move!" I said as I drew a card and looked at it. "Here goes, I Summon Zolga in Attack Mode!" [Zolga – 1700/1500]

"Planning on wiping me out, huh? Well that's not gonna happen, I reveal my facedown card, Gravity Bind!" Mai shouted as she revealed her facedown card.

"No! Now all monsters that are level four or higher can't attack!" I tsked with annoyance. That'd slow me down. "You aren't forgetting that Gravity Bind also works on you, right?"

"You really think I don't know how my own cards work?" Mai chuckled lighly. "I just need to make some time here." She explained with a smile.

'So she's stalling then. But for what exactly?' I wondered. 'Just a beatstick to get over me?'

"Hmph. I end my turn." I said, annoyed.

"My move!" Mai said as she drew a card. "I summon a second Cyber Harpie Lady in Attack Mode!" [Cyber Harpie Lady – 1800/1300]

"Another?" I questioned with surprise.

"I have three Cyber Harpie Ladies in my deck. These elogant ladies will be helpful for a certain monster I have in my deck here." Mai explained. "Now, I'll end my turn there."

"As expected. Gravity Bind will be slowing this Duel down until either of us draw an out for it." I grumbled in frustration. "Well it's my move now! I draw!" I declared.

I looked over my hand, and realised I could make a rather sneaky move here. "Check this out, I summon Dancing Fairy in Defence Mode!" I summoned a fair of two fairies that looked like they had came straight out of a children's bedtime story. They looked happy and cheerful. [Dancing Fairy – 1700/1000]

Mai somewhat seemed to recognise the card. "Dancing Fairy… agh! That monster will let you gain 1000 LP's at the beginning of each of your turns as long as it remains in Defence Mode!"

"That's right, and your Gravity Bind is giving me the perfect opportunity to keep him safe and secure there." I answered with a smirk. "Every turn that Gravity Bind isn't destroyed, is a turn I'll only be getting stronger. I'll end my turn there, so go on and make your move."

"I will!" Mai shouted in frustration at her future situation. "I draw!" She looked over her cards to see if anything could help her here. "I summon a third copy of Cyber Harpie Lady!" [Cyber Harpie Lady – 1800/1000] "And that… will end my turn. Go on make your move!"

"Oh, I plan to!" I responded with confidence. "Here's goes, I draw!" As I drew a card and moved into my Standby Phase, Dancing Fairy granted me 1000 extra LP's.

Eric LP: 3500 – 4500

"But let me tell you this Mai, the fun doesn't stop here! I'll be tributing my Zolga to summon Giga Gagagigo in Attack Mode!" [Giga Gagagigo – 2450/1500] "And here's the really good stuff; Zolga will be increasing my LP's by 2000 points because he was tributed!

Eric LP: 4500 – 6500

"What? 6500 LP's!?" Mai gasped with shock.

"It'll only be getting higher and higher unless Gravity Bind is taken care of. But I don't mind waiting a few turns for that." I replied honestly, as I tapped my foot on the ground. "So, I'll end my turn."

"It's my move now!" Mai declared. "I draw!" She drew her card and looked over it. "I summon Dunames Dark Witch in Attack Mode!" Mai summoned a female, almost angelic creature, with large white wings and armour. She had her hands outstretched downwards. [Dunames Dark Witch – 1800/1550] "Now I'll end my turn there." She said confidently.

'She's oddly confident considering I'm only getting stronger over here.' I thought with suspicion. 'Perhaps she does have a way to get rid of Gravity Bind.'

"Hm, my move!" I yelled as I drew a card, adding it to my hand. "Now Dancing Fairy is gonna increase my LP's by 1000 points!"

Eric LP's: 6500 – 7500

"Next I'll summon Freed The Brave Wanderer in Defence Mode!" I decided, summoning a rather iconic card in Yu-Gi-Oh lore. He had silver armour, blonde hair and a green cape. [Freed The Brave Wanderer - 1700/1200] "That'll end my turn there."

Mai gripped her deck tightly with her two fingers. "My move!" She raised her voice a little as she drew. She looked at what she drew, and smirked.

"Well, my luck may just be turning around now, I activate the spell card Graceful Charity!" Mai declared she played her spell card. I frowned at that play, while Mai just continued. "With this I can draw three new cards as long as I discard two cards!" Mai drew three cards cards, and looked at what to discard. "I'll discard Amazoness Chain Master and Amazoness Swords Woman."

'Two Amazoness cards? That must mean that she plans on using her Harpie cards here, right?' I thought, seeing Mai continue.

"Next I'll play Mystical Space Typhoon, to destroy my own Gravity Bind!" Mai destroyed her own trap card, as a powerful typhoon sucked it up and destroyed into pieces. "Now that that's out of the way, I can focus on dealing some damage here. But first I'll use this spell card, Cost Down, lowering the LV of all monsters in my hand by two! Finally, I'll tribute Dunames Dark Witch to summon Harpies Pet Dragon in Attack Mode!" Mai said proudly as she summoned the strongest monster in her deck - A huge brown, thin dragon that had shackles on its limbs. Despite that it still looked powerful, and it definitely was. [Harpie's Pet Dragon – 2000/2500]

"Meet Harpie's Pet Dragon, one of the strongest monsters in my deck!" Mai stated. "This ability will prove it. My dragon gains 300 ATK for each Harpie Lady on my field! Power up Harpie's Pet Dragon!" [Harpie's Pet Dragon ATK: 2000 – 2900]

"Now it's time to battle! Go Harpie's Pet Dragon, destroy Giga Gagagigo!" Mai ordered as she pointed to my monster. Harpie's Pet Dragon unleashed a powerful burst of fire that destroyed – or rather cooked my lizard.

Eric LP: 7500 – 7050

Mai hummed as she looked at the rest of my monsters. "I can't get over Luster Dragon, but I can still destroy two of your other monsters. "Go my Harpies! Destroy Freed The Brave Wanderer as well as Dancing Fairy!" Two of Mai's harpies let out a cry as they leapt forwards and slashed my two monsters destroying them. Thankfully I took no damage.

Mai smiled at her progress here. "Hm, I'll end my turn there. This Duels getting back in my favour."

"Heh, it was never in your favour to begin with! My move!" I yelled. "I draw!"

I looked at what I drew. 'I drew Gogiga Gagagigo. He'd be great here, but I don't have enough monsters to summon him out. I only have Luster Dragon left on my field. But… I can maybe try and stall for a bit here.' I thought, looking at my cards. 'I can't see a real point in attacking one of Mai's Cyber Harpie Ladies, I'd only be dealing 100 points of damage. And if I switch him into Defence Mode, then he'll be destroyed by one of Mai's Cyber Harpie Ladies. I need Harpie's Pet Dragon to attack Luster Dragon.'

"I'll set a monster facedown and end my turn!" I said confidently. "Your move Mai."

"And I'll make it count! I draw!" Mai declared. She drew her card and gave a thin smile when she saw what it was. "I'll start by setting a card facedown." Mai said with a smile as she set her spell or trap. Was it Mirror Wall? "Now I'll battle! Go Harpie's Pet Dragon, destroy Luster Dragon!"

Luster Dragon was incinerated, as I took some damage. Good thing I had been stocking up on LP's.

Eric LP's: 7050 – 6050

"Now my Harpie's destroy his facedown monster!" Mai ordered to her ladies. As the first Harpie Lady shot upwards and tried to destroy my monster, she was deflected as my monster was revealed to be…

[Des Feral Imp – 1600/1800] Mai tsked in annoyance, as her attack was deflected due to our monsters having equal defence. "Time for Des Feral Imp's effect! I can target a card in my graveyard and shuffle it into my deck! I'll chose Sakuretsu Armour!" I decided as I slotted the card back into my deck, before giving my deck a good shuffle. I smirked as I slotted my deck back into my Duel Disk. "So, what now Mai?"

"My Harpie's can't get over that Imp of yours." Mai said with a frown. "I'll end my turn there."

'Nice, was able to get an extra turn there. Here's hoping for something good…' I prayed.

"I'll gladly take my move! I draw!" I said as I drew a card. "Alright, I activate Pot Of Greed, this'll let me draw two new cards from my deck!" I fiercely drew my two cards and saw what they were. "Excellent, I'll be using them both! First I'll activate Swords Of Revealing Light!" Bright, blinding swords came down on Mai's side of the field, stopping her from attacking. She didn't seem bothered through. "Next I'll set this card facedown and end my turn!"

"Don't start getting confident now." Mai began with a hum. "This Duel is still well under my control. I draw!"

"Not so fast!" I immediately said. "I reveal my facedown card, Raigeki Break! Now by discarding a card, I can destroy a card on the field!" Mai narrowed her eyes, awaiting my decision here. "I'll discard my Victoria to destroy Harpie's Pet Dragon!"

Harpies's Pet Dragon was struck by lightning, glowing yellow before it was destroyed and sent to the graveyard. I smirked. "What was that about you having control of this Duel? Seems like I just removed the biggest obstacle in my path."

"I'll end my turn." Mai suddenly said. "Your move."

"That's right! I'll be the one taking control in this Duel, starting now!" I stated as I drew my card.

'Yes! I've just redrew the Sakuretsu Armour that Des Feral Imp shuffled back into my deck!' I thought with an internal smirk. 'Luck is really on my side today! This'll be great!'

"Alright, I'll end my turn by setting one card facedown!" I declared.

"My move!" Mai said sternly as she drew a card from her deck. She immediately played the card that she drew. "I play Monster Reborn! Now I'll resurrect a monster that's been eagerly awaiting to be resurrected, my Harpie's Pet Dragon!" Mai shouted as a bright light enveloped the Duel Field before Harpie's Pet Dragon was resurrected. [Harpie's Pet Dragon – 2000/2500] [Harpie's Pet Dragon ATK: 2000 – 2900]

"Argh, so what? My Swords of Revealing Light is still up!" I argued. "I still got time to make a comeback here!"

"With what I'm about to do to your LP's, I'd like to see you try." Mai challenged with a smirk, causing me to raise an eyebrow. "I play the card that you've been trying to win here: Harpie's Feather Duster!" Mai yelled as the field got rather gusty. "You better get a good look at my card here, because there's no way you'll be winning it! Harpie's Feather Duster will destroy all of your spells and traps!"

"No!" I was forced to watch as all my spells and traps were destroyed. My Swords Of Revealing Light and my facedown Sakuretsu Armour were destroyed, meaning nothing could stop Mai from attacking me now.

"Go Harpie's Pet Dragon! Destroy Des Feral Imp!" Mai ordered to her dragon. Des Feral Imp was shattered into pieces as he was scorched. Now I was really wide open. This was going to be pretty bad for me. "Now there's nothing to protect you from my three Cyber Harpie Ladies! I'll have the three of them attack you directly!"

I saw all three Cyber Harpie Ladies fly up into the air and swoop downwards towards me. "Attack with Triple Cyber Slash!" All three Harpies slashed at me in unison. I felt no pain of course, but it still hurt my LP's. Badly.

Eric LP: 6050 - 650

I tried to remain confident as I wiped myself down, with a smirk on my face. "Not bad."

Mai looked rather confident now. "If you hadn't stocked up on LP's earlier, you'd been finished there! You'd need more than just a miracle to save you now! But you've haven't been able to play a single card that's impressed me so far. The chances of you beating me here are slim to none."

"Really now? Well I'll have you know that I have quite a few interesting cards in my deck." I looked down at my deck. "I just need to draw one in particular. Then it'll be game."

Mai waved a hand at me. "Take it away. But I suspect you'll just be ending your turn with a monster facedown."

I smiled. "With pleasure. My move!"

I drew as dramatically as I could. It was all or nothing here. If I didn't get a card that could save me, my Battle City experience would be over.

'I just need something, anything that can save me!' I thought, as I flicked over my card to see what I got.

A wide grin broke out on my face. "It's here! I activate the Ritual Spell, Taladon's Knighthood!"

Mai gasped with shock. "You're playing what now?"

"How about I show you? I'll offer the LV8 Gogiga Gagagigo in my hand as tribute to Ritual Summon this monster!" I yelled as the ritual circle appeared on the Duel Field.

'Hope you're watching Kaiba. This is proof that I'm coming in here with everything I've got!' I thought, before turning my attention back to the Duel.

"Gallup forwards and make your power and authority known to all who dare stays against you! You fought this hard and made it this far for your friends and family. They're all counting on you, and so am I! Appear now, Taladon The Galloping Knight!" I shouted out as the Ritual was completed and my monster came forwards. [Taladon The Galloping Knight – 2700/2500]

Mai was stunned at seeing this monster. "I've never seen that monster before…" She wowed. "So what, does he have a special effect?"

"You bet he does! "Taladon The Galloping Knight gains ATK equal to the ATK of one of the monsters used as for its Ritual Summon!" I explained as I gestured out a hand to my monster.

Mai was aghast at hearing that. "What!? But your Gogiga Gagagigo had 2950 ATK!"

"Well done for remembering, but I bet that's because you thought you had a chance to win him from me. Bet you can do the rest of the math for me. No? Well let me be the bearer of bad news. Taladon The Galloping Knight now has 5650 ATK!"

Taladon grew bigger and more powerful as he absorbed the power of Gogiga Gagagigo. [Taladon The Galloping Knight ATK: 2700 – 5650]

Mai took a step back as she realised the dangerous situation she was in. "I've never seen ATK points go that high before!"

"How about I give you a closer inspection? Go Taladon The Galloping Knight, attack Cyber Harpie Lady!" I declared, still playing it safe here.

Mai gave a small scowl, upset at my decision. "I activate Mirror Wall! This card will half the ATK of all your monster when they attack!"

'So I was right to attack her Cyber Harpie Ladies. If I attacked her Harpie's Pet Dragon, Taladon would have just been defeated.' I thought with relief as the battle played out. [Taladon The Galloping Knight ATK: 5650 – 2825]

Despite Taladon The Galloping Knight's ATK being halved, he was still powerful enough to slash through Cyber Harpie Lady, dealing big damage to Mai. [Taladon The Galloping Knight ATK: 2825 – 5650]

Mai LP: 4000 – 2975

As Taladon The Galloping Knight returned to my side of the field, I made sure to remind Mai of the obvious. "Remember, Harpie's Pet Dragon will lose ATK now that a Harpie Lady has left your field." [Harpie's Pet Dragon ATK: 2900 – 2600] "I'll end my turn now. Your move Mai."

Mai grimaced a little as she just drew her card and looked at it. She had an annoyed look on her face as she did. Oh dear. Must have been a brick.

"I'll switch all my monsters into Defence Mode. And I'll end my turn after that." Mai said a bit worried now. [Cyber Harpie Lady – 1800/1300] X2 [Harpie's Pet Dragon – 2600/2500]

"My move!" I said, drawing my card and looking at it. It couldn't really help me right now, so I immediately entered my Battle Phase. "Go Taladon The Galloping Knight, attack and destroy Harpie's Pet Dragon!"

Taladon The Galloping Knight charged forwards, and as he did, his ATK was halved. [Taladon The Galloping Knight ATK: 5650 – 2825] Yet, it was still enough as he conquered Harpie's Pet Dragon, annihilating the monster with a single swing of his sword. [Taladon The Galloping Knight ATK: 2825 – 5650]

I felt even more confident about my victory now. "I end my turn. Over to you."

Mai drew her card and looked at it. I could tell that she was praying for a miracle now. Ironic considering what she said to me earlier. As she looked at her card, I saw a small bit of sadness cross her face. "I summon Harpie Lady in Defence Mode." Mai said with a rather defeated tone.

This was really the original, smaller version of her ace monster, except without the armour and higher ATK. [Harpie Lady – 1300/1400]

"My turns over kid… go on."

'…What's up with Mai? She was never really a sore loser. Rather she never really knew what losing was like until she met Yugi and the gang. I mean sure, she's losing right now, but she looks… a little bit depressed.' I thought with caution.

"Hm, I draw!" I said as I drew my card, looking at it. But just as I was about to play it, Mai spoke out.

"Alright kid, you've impressed me here." Mai admitted with a small smile. "But there's no point in continuing here. You've beaten me. There's not a single card in my deck that can help me get rid of your monster. Even my Mirror Wall wasn't enough." It was Mai's next words that really surprised me.

"So, I surrender." Mai bowed her head as she was about to place her hand on her deck.

'What? She's surrendering?'

"…Just hold on there." I spoke with intrigue.

Mai stopped as she looked up at me. "What? Why? I'm about to surrender the Duel to you!" She exclaimed with confusion.

"Do you really want to surrender here?" I questioned with doubt. "I mean, I get not wanting to keep going as you know that you've lost – or rather that you will eventually lose, but is an outright surrender really the way to go down?"

Mai frowned at me. "It's not that simple kid! These Harpie Lady cards mean a lot to me, I'd even argue that they're the closest friends that I have!"

"…You're sure you don't have any more friends?"

Mai now looked annoyed as her face turned a little red in embarrassment. "Wh-What's your point?! I just don't want to see them destroyed! They mean more to me than just regular Duel Monster cards!" She averted her gaze from me. "So just let me surrender and not let them be destroyed."

I raised my eyebrows. "So if you could, you'd rather want to lose without seeing them destroyed?" Mai looked like she was about to roll her eyes at my comment, but I continued. "Because Mai… that's what I was about to do."

She looked back up at me and looked very surprised. "You what? You were about to win… without destroying my monsters?"

"That's right, and if you'll let me continue, I'll show you what I had planned." I insisted, hoping to give Mai a much more graceful defeat than a surrender.

Mai slowly nodded. "Alright kid, you've gotten my interest. Show me what you can do here."

"I will, and trust me, this'll be a move that you'll definitely remember!" I declared proudly. "First I'll activate Mystical Space Typhoon! I'll use it to destroy your Mirror Wall!"

Mai was a bit confused as the trap she had on the field was destroyed. "But why? How will that help you here? Mirror Wall was barely an inconvenience for you."

"Exactly, but it's time that I activate the card that I just drew this turn, Shooting Star Bow – Ceal!" I cried as I activated my equip spell. Taladon The Galloping Knight's sword was replaced by a shiny silver bow.

Mai raised an eyebrow. "And what does that do?"

"The equip spell gives my monster a powerful effect. By lowering his ATK by 1000 points, he can attack you directly!" [Taladon The Galloping Knight ATK: 5650 – 4650]

Mai's face went wide with shock at that detail. "He can attack me directly!?"

I nodded. "Yes. Is that a defeat that you'd prefer?"

"…I never did get your name kid." Mai wondered. "Because that's one move that I don't think I'll forget."

I smiled. "My names Eric Yuriko. And I think it's time to end this Duel in a way that we both agree on."

Mai pointed out a finger at me. "Well come on then! Don't keep a girl waiting." She smirked, as she lowered her Duel Disk.

"Right, it's time Taladon! Charge up your mighty bow and attack Mai directly!" I ordered to my monster. Taladon The Galloping Knight raised the bow he held in his hand as he fired off a bright silver beam that shot over Mai's three Harpie Ladies and down towards Mai.

Mai actually gave a small smile as she was enveloped by the silver beam, dealing her more than enough damage to finish the Duel.

Mai LP: 2975 – 0

Winner = Eric!

As the Duel was concluded, the holograms faded as I approached Mai. "For a first Duel in Battle City, I think it'll be a hard one to top going forwards. You put up an excellent fight." I praised.

Mai brushed her hair back. "For some kid I've never even met before, you did pretty good Eric. You actually remind me of someone that I know."

"Really?" I quizzed with a low chuckle, knowing who it was.

Mai gave a sigh as she reached into her deck. "Well I won't try and beat around the bush. Here. Harpie's Feather Duster." She said as she pulled out her card and handed it to me. "And take this Locator Card as well. By beating me you've more than earned them."

I smiled as I took the two cards. I had just won quite the powerful card for my deck. "Your deck hasn't taken that heavy of a loss without Harpie's Feather Duster, right?"

"Oh that? You don't need to worry, I have two more copies." Mai said casually, waving my question aside.

"…You what?"

"Yeah, people always make it out to be a big deal having more than one copy of a card in your deck. But seriously, Kaiba has three Blue-Eyes White Dragons in his deck!" Mai said, rubbing her forehead with annoyance. "Trust me when I say that my deck has barely changed Eric."

"Uh, right…" I said plainly, still processing that information.

Mai moved away from me. "Well, that was a fun Duel Eric, but I have to get going now. There are more weak Duelists out there that are asking for their rare cards to be taken by yours truly."

"Who knows, maybe I'll see you in the finals?" She wondered.

"Maybe so. If we end up Dueling again, you'd need all the rare cards you could get your hands on to win against me." I said smugly.

"So that's how it's going to be huh?" Mai quizzed with a hum. "Alright then, if we Duel again it better be in the finals, so it'll be that'll beat you."

"We'll see about that." I chuckled, narrowing my eyes a little.

Mai waved her hand as she walked away from me. "Well, make sure you don't lose to some nobody Eric." She joked as she left the park. Was she joking? Hard to say really.

I waited until she left, before deciding on my next move. 'Well, time to make a phone call.'

"Say WHAT!?" Yelled Calian through the speaker. "You actually Dueled Mai Valentine and won?!"

"Yup." I answered, sitting on a park bench. "Wasn't a complete walk in the park for me."

"…I'm going to pretend you didn't say that Eric. Oh, never mind that! What did you win?!" Calian questioned immediately.

"Well hold on here, we never agreed to say what cards that we won in our Duels." I said with surprise. "I wouldn't give away that important of a detail. We're in a tournament, and we'll be Dueling either after it or in the finals!"

"Tch fine, but don't expect me to give you any free information like that." Calian replied over the reciever. 'Still though, nice job with that win there.'

"So tell me, what about you? Got into any Duels yet?" I wondered casually.

"Nah, but I'll be heading somewhere to see someone, well two people to be exact." Calian said over the phone.

"Hm? Where?" I asked.

"The gravey… I mean… nowhere important." Calain said quickly. "Look, I'll call you back after I get into a Duel, ok?"

I shrugged even though he couldn't see me. "Yeah sure. Make sure you don't lose out there. I think your sister is secretly rooting for you to win."

Calian laughed at that. "Ok, ok… I'll see you later Eric!"

"Yeah, catch you later." I said as I hung up on the phone. No idea where Calian was going, but as long as he stayed out of trouble, I'm sure he'd get on ok. But where was he going?

Hm, a weird question to be sure.

'Well, I've got one win today. I think take in the nice view here before heading back out into the war zone that is Battle City.'

Hope you liked the Duel with Mai. She has hell of a hard deck to work with, so I did my best. Look forward to the next chapter!

The question I have for you all is this: What is your favourite (not what you think is the best, but favourite) Duel across the Yu-Gi-Oh animes?
