What. Was. HAPPENING?!
Raven Queen was going to sign the Storybook of Legends?! And Headmaster Grimm was going to broadcast it to the whole world?!
It can't be! It just can't be! This was too much! While the whole school was getting in a tizzy about this, Amber, Ian, Bentley and I held an emergency meeting in our secret room.
Greenly slammed her hands on the table. "Okay, guys! I know it's been a while since we've had a meeting. But we cannot ignore this! Raven was a proud rebel and now she's going to sign?! Something is definitely wrong here!"
Her friends couldn't agree more.
"But can we do?" Bentley said. "How do we find out what's up with Raven?"
"I just know that Headmaster Grimm is behind this!" Greenly deduced. "I mean, he's the perfect suspect! But we can't just interrogate him! We need solid evidence!"
"Gus and Helga Crumb are Headmaster Grimm's flunkies. They always know what he's up to." said Amber. "I'll cast an invisibility spell on myself so I can eavesdrop on their conversations."
"I'll hack the Mirror Network and see what I can find!" said Ian.
"And I'll see if the staff or any General Villainy students are involved!" Bentley said.
"And I'll-" Greenly spoke. But Amber stopped her.
"No, Greenly, you just hocus focus on your Thronecoming campaign and the bookball game. We'll get to the bottom of this." said the fairy.
"Yeah, you've already got enough on your plate." Ian added. "We can handle this."
Greenly nodded without hesitation. "Got it."
While her friends did their investigating, Greenly needed to get her outfit ready at the Fitting Ballroom. She passed by a dressing room and froze she heard Apple's voice from behind the curtain.
On a hunch, Greenly moved closer until she was in good earshot.
"Can you believe it? Raven is going to sign!" Apple chirped with excitement. "It's like my birthday and New Chapter Day, and True Hearts Day all wrapped into one!"
Greenly scowled. How could the fairest one of all be so callous? And the worst part of all this is that when Raven signs, the Royals will see this as the ultimate victory against the Rebels and no one will have the guts to stand up to ignorant, insensitive snobs like Apple White.
"WE GET IT!" a voice exploded. It was Briar's voice!
"Whoa, what's ruffled your feathers?" Duchess asked in her usual snarky way.
"It's just...it's not as easy as you make it sound, Apple." Briar told her best friend.
"What's not?"
"Following our destinies. I mean, you really think I want to sleep for a hundred years?"
"Well, you are gonna miss out on all the great parties." said Raven.
"Is that how you guys see me? Just a party girl? I don't wanna sleep 'cause I'm gonna lose all my friends. And I'm gonna be alone...how do you think that feels?"
"I've never thought about that." Raven said, sounding guilty.
"Well, I have. And now that you're gonna sign...well, changes everything."
Greenly couldn't believe it! Was that Briar talking?! Briar Beauty, a loud and proud Royal?!
"But Briar, we all have our part to play." said Apple's voice.
"Easy for you to say, Apple. You get poisoned for what, like a week?" Briar shot back.
"Ooh..." Raven, Duchess, and Blondie.
"Briar, I'm sorry you're upset, but―"
"I'm happy for you, Apple. I'm happy that Raven is gonna sign. But now, I don't think I want to."
Once Briar had her say, Greenly dashed off, still in shock by what she said. Briar was going Rebel?!
It was time for the the Thronecoming parade and Greenly was standing outside the crowd dressed in her finest outfit yet: a sleeveless ball gown with a one-shoulder neckline and green bodice with a gold velvet bow at the waist. The floor-length skirt was made of various green, gold, and silver fabrics that came out in all directions for lots of volume. Her hair was a styled into a curled updo and accessorized with a simple green peapod hair pin.
Desptie her spellbinding outfit and the amazing floats, Greenly wasn't feeling any school spirit. Because once the parade was over, Raven was going to sign the Storybook of Legends! Her friends still haven't found out anything.
Just when all seemed lost, Greenly's phone finally pinged. Once she saw it was a text message from Amber, Greenly ducked into a dark alley and saw that Amber sent her a video. Greenly played the video and saw Gus and Helga Crumb in what looked like the inside of a gingerbread house. They sat with a pile of candy while stuffing their faces with said candy.
Greenly watched with disgust. The Crumb Cousins were absolute monsters when it came to sweets. The Three Little Pigs eat less than them and have better manners too.
The cousins toasted their soda cans. "Here's to Headmaster Grimm and his brilliant plan, cousin!" Gus announced.
"And here's to Raven Queen becoming a bad witch!" Helga added. "Now, nobody will feel sorry for her when we shove her into an oven and cook her!" They snort-laughed together.
Gus tapped his chin. "But didn't Headmaster Grimm say something about the Storybook of Legends was actually a fake?"
Helga snorted. "No, he didn't!"
"Yes, he did!" Gus said.
"No, he didn't!"
The cousins kept arguing and the video ended. Shocked by this, Greenly called Amber right away and her fairy friend answered.
"Did you watch the video?!" asked Amber.
"Does a dragon breath fire?! Of course I did!" Greenly's instincts were right all along. Headmaster Grimm was behind Raven's change of heart. But now, the Storybook of Legends could be a fake?! She needed to know for sure if the book was a fake or not. But how?!
"So, what do we do, now?" asked Amber.
Greenly looked back at the crowd and spotted Cedar Wood dressed in her Thronecoming best and watching the parade. Then Greenly remembered the revealer rays Cedar's father gave her! "That's it! Don't do anything else, Amber! I got an idea! See you later!" Greenly hung up and hurried out of the alley and took a deep breath to compose herself.
"Hey, Cedar!" Greenly kindly greeted, waving to the living puppet.
Cedar spun around. "Wow, Greenly! You look amazing!" She wasn't wearing her revealer rays.
"Thanks, you look great too." said Greenly. "By the way, how come you're not wearing your revealer rays? Did you lose them?"
Cedar shook her head. "No, they're in my purse." She looked unsure. "I thought about wearing them. But I wasn't sure. I mean, there's no use for them at a parade."
"That doesn't matter." Greenly replied. "Those glasses are a precious gift from your father! And it's Thronecoming! Don't you want to honor your family and you story?"
"Of course I do!" Cedar looked at her purse. "You're right. These glasses are special. Not because they're magic, but because my dad gave them to me." She opened her purse, took out the revealer rays, and put them on. "Thanks, Greenly!"
Greenly smiled. "No prob." She joined her friend to watch the parade, satisfied that Cedar can now tell and see the truth.
"I still can't believe Raven is going to sign!" said Cedar. "She said she doesn't want to endanger us but I still think we'll be fine without her signing! I just don't know what came over her all of a sudden!"
"Yeah, it's a real mystery." Greenly sighed out.
"Greenly, if Raven does sign, will she really become bad like her mom?" Cedar wondered with fear. "I just can't imagine her being the most evil of them all!"
Greenly put a hand Cedar's wooden shoulder. "Don't worry, Cedar. If Raven does go over the edge, she'll have friends like us to keep her grounded and make sure that she doesn't go too far. Because that's what friends do."
But Cedar didn't look relieved. "I hope you're right." She looked at her hands. "Ugh, I'm getting stress splinters..."
"Come on, I'll buy you some snacks." Greenly offered.
Sundown had came and the parade was over. But the action was far from over. Milton Grimn stood before the village of Book End on a royally fancy platform. Standing next to him were Apple, who looked happy, and Raven, who looked nervous.
As the headmaster began his yammering, Greenly looked over to Cedar to make sure those revealer rays were over her eyes and fortunately, they were.
Raven Queen stood before the podium where the so-called Storybook of Legends was.
"Huh?" Greenly heard Cedar's confusion and saw the puppet girl realizing the truth. "Somebody is not telling the truth!" Cedar began marching up to Raven.
"My name is Raven Queen..." Raven began.
"Raven! Raven!" Cedar called out from the audience.
"And I-"
Cedar Wood went up the staircase. "Raven! Raven!"
"Ms. Wood, split!" Headmaster ordered. He gestured Cedar to leave.
But Cedar Wood split right past the headmaster and approached Raven."Raven! That's not the real Storybook of Legends! That's a fake!"
Raven gasped. Apple gasped. Just about everyone in the village gasped.
Except for Greenly, who stood in silent relief that one truth was successfully exposed.
