Chapter 6

Following Jamie's return to the fold, things seemed to be getting better as time passed in Hogwarts, they were soon settling into their classes, reconnecting with their friends in the school. There were still whispers and curiosity around the refugees, many people were concerned about them, mostly noting that they still sometimes struggled to get through the night. Many of them had already gone to Madam Pomfrey for Dreamless Sleep Potion.

"There is one bright spot." Cameron Lee was saying to Amara. "Rachel seems to finally be settling in and is overcoming her nightmares…"

"That's good." Amara remarked. "I just...I hope things get better for you all."

Cameron nodded. "Yeah. I, it's not easy. We, we've been dealing with so much. My sister and I were, based on everything we've heard the others did lose quite a bit, family members, friends...but they have surviving family...Not my sister and I, it's just us now."

"Oh Cameron, that's…" Amara gasped.

He just shook his head, not wanting to discuss it further. So they looked around for another topic and soon found one as they spotted Jeff, Ariana and Marli entering the Great Hall.

"You'll do great Jeff, I'm sure you'll get the spot." Ariana remarked.

Jeff shook his head. "I don't know, I mean…There will be older students there, more experienced"

Marli smiled. "Experience is good, but so is talent, just trust in yourself."

"What's going on?" Amara asked.

It was Jamie, now looking a lot healthier, who answered as he walked up.

"Jeff's gonna be trying out for the Slytherin Quidditch Team." He said, clapping Jeff's shoulder.

The others all grinned at that and instantly began encouraging him, giving Jeff a new sense of confidence.

"I'm telling you, Headmaster, I don't like this." Professor Bennett remarked.

Professor Dumbledore nodded sadly. "I understand what you are saying Professor Bennett. But...we cannot be sure of what exactly we are looking at here."

Professor Bennett shook her head. "It's bad enough, Headmaster, there's some strange figure prowling around the outskirts of Hogwarts, we have to assume it's a spy of some sort. But even so, after last year we can't take chances."

"I agree." Professor Dumbledore stated. "This may not have anything to do with them. But even so, we have to make sure to nip any threats like this in the bud."

Professor Bennett nodded. "So, should I go and investigate?"

Professor Dumbledore shook his head. "Not alone...Take at least two others with you please."

"Would Minerva and Filius be available?" Professor Bennett asked.

Professor Dumbledore nodded. "Yes, yes that might be the best choice. Be careful and find out who this is before engaging...if it is one of them we have to figure out if they've figured out our real plan, or if they are just covering their bases."

Professor Bennett nodded and then considered. "How are things at the other schools?"

"The Pact remains intact, Uagadou, Castelobruxo, Ilvermorny and Mahoutokoro are in the middle or repairs...Beauxbatons continues to carry on as normal, while managing to continue repelling the attacks from the main group."

Professor Bennett nodded, things were still holding strong, she just hoped it would last long enough for them to find the truth and expose this threat, for it was in their anonymity that they held their true strength.

Jeff smiled to himself, focusing on his new broom which he held tightly. He was on the Quidditch Pitch with the rest of the Slytherin team hopefuls, try outs were about to begin and the team captain was going through the details of what they would be doing and how they would be doing things, which meant he needed to take a moment and relax, mentally preparing himself, since the try outs for Chasers and Beaters would be taking place first.

"You got this, Jeff." Carla said cheerfully.

He turned and smiled at her, she and the rest of his friends sat in the stands, even those from other houses and were clearly there to cheer him on.

"Trust me, you're nailing the Keeper position." Amara added with a smile.

Even thought she wasn't saying much, Jennifer was also present. She gave Jeff a friendly smile however as he settled in to watch as the rest of the try outs took place. It wasn't long before Roberta Irvine was naturally returning to the team as a Chaser, two others, another third year and a fourth year who was another returning player, were soon chosen. The two Beaters were new while the Captain was the Seeker. As such the Seeker tryouts would be used for building a reserve squad which the other two tryouts had helped build up. Now it was time for the Keeper tryouts and things certainly went very well. As such, Jeff's nerves built as he went up to begin his part.

'You can do this.' He said to himself.

So it went as he blocked the shots, one, two, three, four, then came the last one and, he did it. The only one to block all five shots. To the delight of his friends, and relief of Jeff, the captain immediately appointed him as the new Keeper.
