Selection Process
[The scene opens with a shot of the early morning sky, the sun peaking over the horizon as the light shines down on the tips of the trees. The mountain peaks reflect the light coming down on the rockface, and the river sparkles in the orange dawn rays]
[A small recreation to the intro of "Go the Distance" can be heard in the background as the camera pans over the island, past the town of Maple, past the town of Amber, and leading into Toon City. The morning sun shines off the tall skyscrapers and the sounds of industry restarting can be heard as trains set off for work from the sheds, tugboats begin to ferry across the port and the canal, along with shops and factories beginning to come to life once more]
[We transition to later in the morning at Evergreen Station as the railway is busy with trains coming in and out of the station; Gordon is shown waiting with the Express at Platform One while Thomas comes in with Annie and Clarabel from Amber on Platform Two. James and Henry are waiting on Platforms Three and Four respectively with a suburban passenger train and a slow goods train. On Platforms Five and Six, Donald and Douglas pass by on the former with a mixed freight while on the latter, Bear passes by with the morning milk train. In the shunting yards nearby, Stanley, Rosie, and Philip can be seen arranging the next trains to come into the station]
[Mother Gothel, Claude Frollo, Yogi, Boo-Boo, Cindy, Silver, Blaze, Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, Professor Utonium, Tramp, Lady, Buster, Balto, Jenna, Steele, Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Fox, Wolf, Sylvester, Wile, Roadrunner, Penny, Angelina, Alice, Top Cat, Benny, Choo-Choo, Fancy-Fancy, Spook, Brain, Drago, Guntiver, Augustus, Erma, Flip, and Sealia are walking to and fro along the platforms either purchasing tickets, waiting on the benches, or perusing around the various shops or the cafe]
[Cut to the Heeler Family entering the station as Bluey looks over to her right and notices a poster on the wall with the colosseum from several episodes before, only this time, we see the name of it titled "The Great Toon Show"]
[Note; this poster, while not specifically named throughout the season, would have appeared in the background of multiple episodes]
Bluey: What's that all about?
Bingo: What, Bluey?
Bluey: That poster over there?
[Bluey points over to the poster in question, catching the attention of her parents]
Bandit: What's this about a poster?
Chilli: I think it's that one over there, hmmmm…The Great Toon Show?
Bandit: Aaaaaaah, so it's coming 'round again?
Bluey: Ya' know, I was wondering what it would be like to play in that. I can just see it now…
[The camera pans up to reveal a fantasy sequence through Bluey's imagination, drawn out from some of her fictional escapades. It shows two contestants standing on the second and third place positions on the podium before panning up as the announcer makes a statement]
"They came from all corners of animation, but one lucky star ended up taking the gold! She's a funny, spritely little thing! Coming from the land down under; Bluey Christine Heeler!"
[Bluey is shown at the top of the first place position on the podium with a gold medal around her neck and waving her arms up as the crowd cheers before the camera pans back down to reality, Bluey donning a dreamy expression on her face]
Bluey: Haaaaaa…
[Bingo looks over at the poster before looking to the one next to it, advertising a blue cat running across the street with a torch in hand, signifying the Olympic Flame]
Bingo: Hmmmm…
[Cut back to the poster where the original holder fades into Bingo as she runs up the steps and then dips the torch in the giant holder, causing it to whoosh bright orange, inciting another round of cheers before fading back into reality]
Bingo: Maybe we could be part of the show.
Chilli: Hohoho, girls, you and your imaginations.
Bandit: I reckon I'd look pretty swish carrying that torch.
Chilli: That's if you can run all the way across town and up those stairs.
Bandit: Well, I've still got a bit of juice left in these legs here, I didn't beat my brothers in biking for nothing.
Chilli: Oh, yes, "in the 80s".
[Cut to a shot of Gordon's whistle as he slowly sets off with the express and a musical cue similar to "Will You, Won't You" plays, signifying that something big is about to happen as he rushes past Oak Station with the posters spread across both sides of the platform. Cut to Bluey watching from the window]
Bluey: It's gonna be special! It's gonna be great!
[Cut to Bingo watching from the window]
Bingo: I'm so excited that I just can't wait!
[Cut to Yogi, Blitz, and Johnny B. appearing next to one another in a line one by one]
Blitz, Johnny, Yogi: Training and straining, because I know
I will be the winner of the Great Toon Show!
[Zoom over to Hercules in the gym, effortlessly carrying stacks of weights on his shoulders]
Hercules: Stacked to the brim with tons of weights!
[Pan over to Jasper seemingly carrying just as much with a confident smirk]
Jasper: Can lift them all, no need to contemplate!
[Hercules and Jasper narrow their eyes at each other with a competitive edge before they whip around, the side of the weights taking us to the next scene of Sonic speeding across a field]
Sonic: A shining streak of blue with the wind at my back
[At that moment, Gordon rushes past on the mainline with the Express]
Gordon: You'd never seen a faster engine on the track
[Pan up to reveal Buttercup flying overhead]
Buttercup: I may be small in size, but I'm not a beginner
In every single fight I'm in, I'm always the winner!
[Blossom and Bubbles pull up alongside her]
Blossom: Make that two!
Bubbles: Or three!
[Cut to a shot of the girls' signature streaks of color before panning down to Devil's Bayou as Scar and Katz are standing next to one another with their arms crossed]
Scar: It's times such as this, when change comes around
Katz: No longer stuck in second, as I trounce them to the ground!
[The background darkens around the two felines as they're shown to be the size of giants, crushing the silhouettes below with their shoes. The black screen is then treated to four spotlights on a stage, shining down on Rarity, Applejack, Bugs, and Daffy in front of a colosseum background]
Applejack, Bugs, Daffy, Rarity: It's gonna be special, it's gonna be great
So much excitement, how I just can't wait!
[Cut to Top Cat, Mao Mao, and Robin Hood doing pull-ups on several tree branches]
Mao Mao, Robin Hood, Top Cat: Training and straining
Because I know
[Pan over to Angelina and Alice doing a similar exercise before they jump off the branch, do a front-flip, and land next to each other in sync]
Angelina and Alice: I will be the winner of the Great Toon Show!
[Cut to Balto and Shadow running alongside each other on a racing track]
Balto and Shadow: Fast and raring!
[Cut to Tramp and Dodger leaping over barrels]
Tramp and Dodger: Slick and daring!
[Cut to Lapis and Peridot flexing their arms next to each other while Buster and Shere Khan arm wrestle nearby]
Buster, Lapis, Peridot, Shere Khan: Tough and rightful!
[Cut to Maleficent and Hades showing off their powers while Pamela and Steele engage in a tug of war]
Hades, Maleficient, Pamela, Steele: Strong and frightful!
[Cut to James, Emily, and Henry passing by Cranky at Cedar Harbor]
James, Emily, Henry: Everyone who's anyone thinks that they know!
[Pan up to the crane in question]
Cranky: They're all nutcases…
[Cut to Yakko, Wakko, and Dot bursting out of a set of crates, conveniently matching their respective sizes]
Yakko, Wakko, Dot: I will be the winner of the Great Toon Show!
[Cut to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs marching over a hill]
Snow White: It's gonna be special, it's gonna be great!
[Cut to Chance and Jake practicing on their makeshift obstacle course, going over a jungle gym before doing a backflip on the ground and lifting up pieces of metal]
Chance and Jake: All this excitement and we just can't wait!
Training and straining
So everyone will know!
[Everyone is shown in cubes singing together, including characters that weren't part of the other verses, showing off a complete all-stars cast]
I will be the winner of the Great Toon Show!
I will be the winner of the Great Toon Show!
[The song ends as we cut to City Hall where Donald Duck is looking through a telescope before pulling back with a look of exasperation]
Donald: Hoooooo, boy, not dis again.
[Pan over to reveal Daisy standing next to Donald]
Daisy: What is this time, grumpy puss?
Donald: Dis Great Toon Show nonsense, dat's what! Everytime, dis town is completely flipped on its head…
Daisy: Oh, come now, they're just getting into the spirit. Plus, you know the Executive Suite has the best view in the stadium.
Donald: I suppose so…
Daisy: By the way, Mayor Mouse wants us in his office.
Donald: Of course he does, and you know he's called Mickey.
[Donald and Daisy walk out of the Observatory Room and head towards the mayor's office where Minnie and Goofy are already there, Pluto is standing by the doorway as the ducks walk in]
[Cut to Mickey behind his desk as he organizes a sheet of papers]
Mickey: So, you all know what's coming up in a few days?
Goofy: Oh, sure, Mick, I mean, Mr. Mayor, the whole island's goin' nuts for it, HA-YUK!
Minnie: I've informed the mayors of the other towns about the event and they say they're going to chip in for sponsors.
Mickey: Excellent, and I take it our special guests will be in attendance?
Minnie: From what I last heard, I believe Mr. Universe was reaching out to them.
Mickey: Good to know, especially since I booked them in for a special seating arrangement.
Goofy: Ya' really think they'll go for somethin' like this?
Daisy: Well, if we can sit next to people we once considered enemies, I say anything is possible.
Minnie: By the way, how are we with the forms?
Mickey: Well, a handful of people are already signing up, but there's only so many slots to fill. Haha, kinda funny when you think about it.
Donald: How so?
Mickey: The Great Toon Show is the one thing that makes the community come together outside of a holiday or other special event, for better or for worse.
[We cut to outer space as the camera pans around the stars and cosmos before we are shown Homeworld for a few moments. The theme of the Diamonds plays as we pan down to the exterior of their headquarters. Cut to inside where Steven is standing before them while Spinel is off to the side]
Steven: So, we were hoping that you would all come as the guests of honor for the tournament. If you're willing and able…
[Pan up to reveal the Diamonds' expressions, Yellow has her signature stoic look, Blue appears pensive, and White dons an expression of both superiority and thoughtfulness]
Yellow: So we're essentially standing around overseeing some mindless dribble? What a waste of time.
Blue: Plus, I'm not exactly fond of revisiting the Earth, for obvious reasons you understand.
White: Tell me, starlight, what do we get in return for attending this…ceremony?
Steven: AHEM, well, think of this as a good publicity stunt, you do want everyone to stand in awe at your radiance and benevolence, I'm sure? [internally] "What even am I saying?"
White: Hmmmmm…seeing how insignificant the Earthlings are, I suppose it wouldn't do them any harm to see their superiors standing before them.
Yellow: …I suppose I can tolerate a little…competition, but only this once.
Blue: Hmmmm…if it's for you, Pink, AHEM, Steven, then I'll be there as well.
Spinel: Weeeeeell, ya' know it wouldn't be a party without me, so, who am I ta' miss somethin' like this? Come here, ya' big knucklehead.
[Spinel pulls Steven into a noogie with her long stretchy arms before withdrawing]
Steven: Hehehe! Quit it, you'll mess up my hair!
Spinel: Sorry, ya' know I can't help myself sometimes, hehehe!
Steven: Great! I'll be seeing you three in a couple of days.
Yellow: You're leaving so soon?
Steven: I've gotta help with the event back on Earth so…please don't sing to make me stay.
Spinel: Don't you worry, Steven, I'll keep 'em in line if ya' know what I mean, safe travels~
[Steven steps on the pod and transitions back to his own world as the Diamonds glance at each other]
Blue: …Perhaps it would be entertaining.
Yellow: Entertaining by Earth standards has to be low…
White: I imagine it will be amusing at best, after all, we're merely watching those lower than us struggle to achieve a meager prize.
Blue: I suppose when you word it like that, it's not the worst thing imaginable.
Yellow: Hmmmmmmm…I suppose it'll be tolerable.
Spinel: Hey, all I know is that I'll take any excuse to visit "my diamond", if ya' know what I mean?
Blue: Hmmhmmhmm, it's so nice to see you laughing again, Spinel.
Yellow: Indeed, especially now that we don't have to worry about any interpersonal conflicts.
White: Now then, starlight, may we adore you?
[Spinel sweatdrops while still smiling with her eyes closed]
Spinel: So long as you promise not to go overboard with it.
[Transition to Steven arriving by the lighthouse at Mahogany, giving a sigh as he steps off the pad]
Steven: Glad that's all sorted out.
Amethyst: Yooooooo, Steven!
[Amethyst pulls the human into a bear hug while spinning him around]
Steven: Hahaha! Amethyst! Calm down! I'm here, I'm here!
[Amethyst sets Steven down]
Amethyst: Hehe, sorry, man, you know how it is.
[Pan over to reveal Pearl and Garnet on the scene]
Pearl: I see the therapy sessions have treated you well.
Steven: You'd be surprised at the results. I think I've been able to clear my head better now, I mean, I actually managed to speak with the Diamonds with no pressure.
Garnet: Hmmmm, you really have come a long way from the little scamp before.
Steven: [shrugs] Well, we all gotta grow up at some point, even if it looks like we never grow at all.
Amethyst: Psst, that's easy for us, we've looked this way our whole lives. Still got all my best features.
Pearl: [rolls her eyes] Either way, did they agree to attend?
Steven: Yup, we got everything sorted out.
[At that moment, Lapis, Peridot, Jasper, and Bismuth arrive]
Peridot: Steven! I can't tell you how exhilarated I feel! Should I qualify for this "Great Toon Show", I'm estimating a decent spot in the Skill Competition.
Steven: That's great, Peridot, how about the rest of you?
Lapis: [shrugs] I'm thinking of either speed or skill, depending on if they let me use my wings.
Bismuth: Honey, I was built for strength, as soon as that thing starts, I'm showin' 'em I mean bismuth!
Jasper: Hmph! You might be strong, but I was considered the perfect soldier. I'll wipe the floor with the rest of those weaklings.
Bismuth: Now, Jasper, don't let that big ole ego get to you again.
Jasper: It's not an ego, it's simply knowing what I'm capable of.
Peridot: Even if your competition is supposedly that demi-god or whatever? What was it, Heracles?
Pearl: I believe that would be correct under Greek pronunciation, while Hercules is more associated with the Roman dialect.
Peridot: Peculiar that a Greek demi-god is carrying the Roman version of his name.
Garnet: It's a really complicated story, like the rest of Mythology from what I've heard. Either way, if I do get in, I'm ready to show off these guns.
[Garnet extends her arms to flex]
Bismuth: Honey, you're practically a two-package deal, you're gonna make weak 'em in the knees.
Garnet: Thanks, I plan to.
Amethyst: So, you thinkin' of takin' part, big guy?
Steven: If we were talking several years ago, I would have said 'yes' in a heartbeat. But this time, I think I'm gonna take a backseat, not really looking to stimulate myself too much.
Pearl: That's perfectly fine, Steven. I just hope you'll be cheering us on in our events.
Steven: Of course I do, I've got faith in all of you…and yes, that includes you too, Jasper.
Jasper: Hmm…
[Jasper does a diamond symbol with her arms]
Steven: Hehehe, ya' know you don't have to do that around me, right?
Jasper: Oh…sorry, it's a force of habit.
Lapis: Look at you, having learned the art of apologizing.
Jasper: HMPH, it's not like I'm incapable of it or anything…seems you've also learned to keep that pretty little smile on your face.
[Lapis blushes from the comment as Amethyst and Peridot slide up on either side of her with looks of mischief]
Lapis: …Don't even say it.
Steven: Hmmhmmhmm, you know, I never thought I'd see you two getting along.
Lapis: Well, that's the beauty of trauma bonding, as well as a lot of making up for lost time.
[Lapis looks back at Jasper who gives one of her rare genuine small smiles]
Lapis: …It's nice, actually.
[Cut to the gymnasium as several characters are shown working out. Unsurprisingly, some are brimming with confidence, such as the case with Arnold and Johnny Bravo weightlifting next to each other]
Arnold: Dargh! Your puny speed bumps are no match for mein pure muscle!
Johnny: Hey now, I'll have ya' know these babies were made for strength and show! If I'm gonna be sweatin' out there, I'mma look good while I do it.
Samurai Jack: [off-screen] Does the word modesty not fit within your vocabulary?
[Johnny looks over at SJ meditating on a yoga mat nearby, his legs crossed and his hands in his lap]
Johnny: Aww, c'mon, Jacko, you know I can't resist the temptation, especially in front a' posers.
[Jack raises a brow at this]
Arnold: Just who are you claiming poser, Blondie?
Johnny: The guy that's all top half and no bottom half, apart from some skimpy lil' legs.
[Arnold drops his weights indignantly, catching the attention of Applejack lifting her own set nearby with Rarity doing stretches next to her]
Arnold: I'll have you know those frames were embellished! Of course someone with mein stature and grace would have a perfect waistline.
Johnny: I beg ta' differ, simply by takin' a look at this here figure.
Rainbow Dash: [off-screen] You're the fruitiest people I've ever seen.
[Pan over to Rainbow Dash on the treadmill with a bemused look on her face]
Arnold: I know Rainbow Pride isn't talking.
Rainbow Dash: Wooooooow, haven't heard that one before. Besides, you guys might be lucky trying to win your event, I know I'm winnin' mine.
Applejack: You sure about that, Dashie, cuz more often than not, ya' end up gettin' a big head.
Rainbow Dash: Pfft, I know I'm built for speed, the competition is unmatched with the Dash!
Rarity: That wouldn't happen to include certain hedgehogs, would it, darling?
Rainbow Dash: Everyone knows it's the shoes for them, I've got pure stamina in these wings.
Applejack: Whatever you say, RD, I know I've got a good shot at that there strength competition.
Johnny: No offense there, little lady, but you sure you can match with these guns?
[Johnny flexes both of his arms for emphasis]
Applejack: Sugarcube, I think I'm a force ta' be reckoned with when I got these gains.
[AJ flexes her own arm out to reveal a rather impressive bicep]
Rarity: Tck, nice~
[On another side of the gym, Twilight, Pinkie, and Fluttershy are doing their own exercises on some yoga mats, overhearing the conversation]
Twilight: You know, as much as it might be good for publicity, I couldn't really see myself in that kind of event. I'm not really a sports person.
Fluttershy: Neither am I. My preference is watching from the audience and cheering my friends on.
Pinkie: I mean, I could probably wipe the floor with my competition, buuuut I don't wanna make things too easy for myself.
Twilight: Pinkie, you might have unspoken demi-god powers, but even I'm positive there's people who could match you.
Fluttershy: Plus, you don't really compete in sports that much, at least apart from commenting on them.
Pinkie: True, I do make for a good commentator. I still remember the Running of the Leaves from years ago, hehe, that was a hoot! Who do you think's gonna pull the gold?
Twilight: Applejack has a strong chance at winning the strength competition, though there might be some exceptions. Rainbow Dash could win the speed contest, if she can keep ahead of the hedgehogs.
Fluttershy: I wonder who's gonna enter the skill contest?
?: That would be yours truly.
[The three look to see Starlight approaching them, her mane tied back into a ponytail]
Fluttershy: Oh! You're entering the show as well?
Starlight: When you've built up the skills that I have, it's practically a guarantee. I mean, I'm practically at the level of an alicorn, and I don't even need wings.
Twilight: Ever humble, aren't you, Starlight?
Starlight: [shrugs] In a game like this, a little hubris doesn't hurt, especially if you know how far you're gonna go.
[Cut to Angelina, Alice, Henry, and William in Napier Park atop a hill]
Alice: I'm tellin' you, Angelina, you have the best shot of winning the skill challenge.
William: After all, next to Alice, you're the most flexible person I know.
Henry: Oooooh, are you going to win a gold medal, Angelina?
Angelina: [blushes modestly] Oh, well, you're all very kind. I think I've a good chance at winning. I haven't been practicing ballet for nothing.
[Cut to the Pinkpaw Twins; Priscilla and Penelope, coming onto the scene]
Priscilla: Oh yes, Angelina, I'm sure you'll win…if the other contestants are somehow incapacitated.
Penelope: Maybe they'll all strain their ankles and you'll win by default.
Angelina: I don't suppose you two had any plans of competing? Since you seem rather confident?
Priscilla: Oh, pleasse, as if I would partake in something like that, next to all those sweaty, musky jocks.
Penelope: Have you heard of the things that go on in those locker rooms? [shudders] Can't even imagine…
Alice: Hmmmm, seems like someone's a little apprehensive, hence why they didn't join.
[Priscilla crosses her arms defensively while Penelope raises a brow]
Priscilla: Whatever, I'm not concerned about that. Just don't screw up in your event.
Angelina: I believe that's the nicest thing you've said to me, Priscilla.
Priscilla: Oh, but of course, I'm not heartless.
Penelope: Either way, at least try to take the risk into consideration.
Angelina: I know that there's probably going to be more experienced players in the running, but I'm not going to pass up a chance.
Alice: After all, Angelina has proven herself to be capable. I'm sure she's got a decent shot.
[The twins take a pause…before Priscilla gives a sigh while Penelope looks away]
Priscilla: For the sake of brevity, I'll lay off on the ragging for now. You…might prove to be exceptional.
Penelope: Oh yes, decent even.
Angelina: Why thank you…you are going soft.
Priscilla: Shush, Mouseling.
[Cut to the Magical Girls outside of the Sweets Shop as Big Macintosh and Granny Smith pass by to the right, while Mufasa and Sarabi pass by to the left]
Madoka: So, who's thinking of entering?
Homura: I'll pass on that offer.
Sayaka: I would have thought you'd like to show off, Homura.
Homura: It wouldn't be fair to everyone else if I was there.
Sayaka: Humble, aren't you?
Homura: It's not exactly the word I'd use to describe you.
Sayaka: Funny…
Kyoko: I wouldn't mind taking a crack at it, I know I could hold a decent fight.
Mami: It would certainly be an honor to compete alongside such legends.
Madoka: I've heard that the likes of Robin Hood and Mulan have a high chance of making the cut.
Homura: I can see why, they're both adaptable in their own right. Especially the latter.
Sayaka: I still reckon I'd have a good shot against some of those big dogs. I mean, we have gone through hell and back before.
Homura: Not exactly an event, or events, that I look back on fondly.
Madoka: Well, regardless, I'm sure at least one of us has to qualify.
Kyoko: Not to brag or anything, but this girl here's looking pretty viable.
Mami: Oh, girls, not to distract from the conversation, but to your right, you'll see opposites attract.
[The quintet looks over to see Fox and Wolf on the other side of the street, stifling chuckles or giggles. Even Homura can't suppress a small grin]
Homura: It seems I'm not the only one who believes in finding affection, regardless of parallels.
[Cut to the aforementioned duo speaking to one another]
Fox: So, you reckon you stand a fighting chance?
Wolf: If I can endure one tournament of nutjobs, I'm pretty confident I can manage another.
Fox: In that case, don't expect me to go easy, we might be on equal terms, but I've still got winning as a priority.
Wolf: So long as it's not a moral compass lecture, I can respect that.
Fox: Trust me, if you knew the full extent of my character, you'd know that I'm in no position to preach about morality.
Wolf: Says the acclaimed Hero of Corneria.
Fox: Ironic since weren't you called "Lord O'Donnell" at some point, like high class villain schtick?
Wolf: Ugh, it makes me sound pompous…more than usual. Besides, I couldn't really see myself with a cane or a monocle.
Fox: So, who do you reckon, besides me, is gonna be your biggest competition?
Wolf: If they've got superpowers, that might put me, and you, at a disadvantage. Of course, who said I couldn't use my bare paws to send a message?
Fox: Word of advice; try not to maim anyone since I'd rather not see you get in trouble.
Wolf: What do ya' know, he really does care.
Fox: And it only took you how long to do that?
Wolf: I care, I just show it in a different way.
Fox: I can only imagine what Leon and Panther have seen.
Wolf: Trust me, you're never gonna see a rose in my mouth like Cat-sanova. But don't worry, I won't have a knife by bedside.
Fox: You're slowly growing more of a heart by the day.
Wolf: Well, let's just say the ice is melting around it, potentially as a result of the person standing next to me.
[Cut to a backshot of the two as their tails are shown brushing up against one another]
[Transition to a montage of the mail being delivered over several days to various mailboxes. A thing to note is that the envelopes are wrapped with a special emblem in the center as the various hands or paws pick them from the boxes]
[As the mailvan heads off into the distance, a pan-up shot shows the stadium near the village of Pine as the climax notes of "Go the Distance" play over the scene]
[Cut to black]
