BAD MOON RISING
"Don't go around tonight.
Well, it's bound to take your life.
There's a bad moon on the rise."
– Creedence Clearwater Revival: 'Bad Moon Rising' (Green River [1969])
The TARDIS
Katy stepped from the TARDIS's infinite wardrobe dressed in a late 1970s outfit and headed down the corridor towards the console room. Since New Earth, and Cassandra's last stand, both Rose and Katy had been feeling a little sombre; and the Doctor decided that the best way to pull them out of their funk, was to take them on yet another adventure to cheer them up. He then promptly sent both girls to the wardrobe to get dressed in something from the 1970s. It took less than ten seconds for Rose to find something to wear and was changed and out of the wardrobe in no time flat in some mini denim dungarees, a purple t-shirt with a picture of a Queen's crown, opaque black tights, and some knee-high black boots.
Katy, however, went with a dress that was empire-lined and had large billowy sleeves and a sweetheart neckline, with the skirt ending just at the top of her knees. She also wore some opaque black tights and opted for some black patent leather Mary-janes.
"What do you think of this?" She heard Rose's voice asking the Doctor about her mini dungarees with a somewhat hopeful voice, obviously gunning for his approval. "Will it do?" Katy rounded the corner in time for the Doctor to look up from what he was doing and scoffed at Rose's outfit.
"In the late 1970s?" The Doctor furrowed his eyebrow. "You'd be better off in a bin bag." He stated rather bluntly as Rose's face fell a little. Katy went upstairs, straightening out the billowy sleeves and looking a little uncomfortable.
"How do I look?" She asked, half-heartedly. The Doctor and Rose glanced over, and Rose frowned.
"Where'd you find that?"
"Same place you found those?" Katy replied, pointing at the dungarees. She glanced at the Doctor, enquiringly. "Well?"
"You look lovely." The Doctor approved, and Rose's mouth fell open in annoyance. "Not exactly what I had in mind for where we're going … but it'll do." He added, pulling a CD from out of nowhere. "Hold on, listen to this." The Doctor inserts the CD into the TARDIS player and Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick starts playing overhead. "Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Number One in 1979." The Doctor grinned and Katy sighed, shaking her head.
"Why doesn't it surprise me that you like him, Doctor?" She questioned, rhetorically. Rose laughs, seemingly having gotten over the Doctor's more flattering appraisal of Katy's outfit.
"You're a punk." She observes, as the Doctor continues grinning maniacally as he starts dancing around the console, making adjustments here and there as he sang along with the song.
"It's good to be a lunatic…"
"That's what you are. A big old punk with a bit of rockabilly thrown in." Rose grins.
"Would you two like to see him?" The Doctor suddenly asks.
"How'd you mean?" Rose asks, curiously.
"In concert? Or in person?" Katy frowns, as the Doctor nodded enthusiastically.
"What else is a TARDIS for?" He points out, still bopping along to the music, pressing a button here, flipping a switch there, adjusting something that makes the TARDIS shake a little. "I can take you to the Battle of Trafalgar, the first anti-gravity Olympics, Caesar crossing the Rubicon … or Ian Dury at the Top Rank, Sheffield, England, Earth, 21st November 1979." He grabs both sisters' hands and pulls them along to dance along with him to the music. "What do you think?" He asks, with a grin.
"Sounds fun," Katy shrugged.
"Sheffield it is," Rose agreed. The Doctor stops dancing and drops their hands, before heading over to the console monitor to put in the coordinates.
"Hold on tight." He warns, and both Katy and Rose scramble to get a hold of something before the TARDIS could unceremoniously dump them on the metal grated floor without warning. The Doctor picks up a hammer and starts beating along to the rhythm of the song on the console while they travel.
"Stop!" Rose giggles.
"You're completely mad, you are." Katy teases, before the TARDIS suddenly stops and throws all three of them to the floor. This sends them all into a fit of laughter before they pick themselves up off the floor and start dusting themselves off. The Doctor darts around to pick up his brown coat and shrugs it on.
"1979," He announces. "Hell of a year: China invades Vietnam. The Muppet Movie; love that film."
"Who doesn't?" Katy pipes up.
"Margaret Thatcher. Ugh!" The Doctor shudders. "Skylab falls to Earth, with a little help from me." He pulls open one of the double doors and goes to step outside, followed closely by Katy and Rose. "Nearly took off my thumb. And I like my thumb. I need my thumb—"
Scottish Highlands
1879.
Katy snorts in amusement and smiles at him, only for the smile to fall quickly from her face when she comes face to face with a barrel of a rifle. She instantly pales and raises her hands in surrender.
"Uh, Doctor…" Katy attempts to get the Doctor's attention, but he is too busy rambling on about 1979 historical facts to notice the nervous tone of his girlfriend's voice.
"—I'm very attached to…" He finally notices the rifles cocked and pointed right at him, Katy, and Rose. "… my thumb." The trio were surrounded by Redcoats who were looking very suspiciously at them. The officer in charge was mounted on a black horse and looking at them with hostility. The confused expression on the Doctor's face clears almost immediately when he sees them. "1879," He mutters underneath his breath to Katy and Rose before shrugging. "Same difference." Katy rolls her eyes, while Rose looks nervously at the soldiers.
"You will explain your presence," The officer – hereafter referred to as Reynolds – demands in a thick Scottish burr, before giving Katy and Rose a quick eye sweep from their heads to their toes before continuing his demands. "And the nakedness of these girls."
"Are we in Scotland?" the Doctor questions in a flawless Scottish accent, which makes both sisters blink at him in astonishment. Reynolds raises an eyebrow at him.
"How can you be ignorant of that?"
"Oh, I'm, I'm dazed and confused." The Doctor quickly improvises. "I've been chasing these, wee naked children over hill and over dale." He glances over at Katy and Rose. "Isn't that right, ya timorous beasties?" He questions, and Katy quickly nods.
"Most definitely," Katy agreed.
"Och, aye! We've been oot and aboot." Rose piped up, trying to pull off a Scottish burr of her own and failing miserably. Katy winced, and the Doctor aimed a very offended glare at Rose.
"No, don't do that." He muttered underneath his breath, reverting briefly back to his Estuary accent.
"Hoots mon." Rose attempted to redeem herself and flinched when Katy stepped down hard on her foot. She glares at her sister but is instantly cowed by the scowl on the Doctor's face.
"No, really, don't. Really." He insists, and Rose flushes in embarrassment.
"Will you identify yourself, sir?" Reynolds interrupts, and the Doctor plasters on a polite smile.
"I'm Doctor James McCrimmon, from the township of Balamory." He lowers one of his hands, going for one of his coat pockets where he kept the psychic paper. "I have my credentials, if I may?" Reynolds nods, and the Doctor digs around the bigger-on-the-inside pockets of his coat, before pulling free the psychic paper; opening it up and holding it out to Reynolds so he could see. "As you can see, a Doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. I trained under Doctor Bell himself." The Doctor explains.
"Let them approach." An upper-class English accent coming from a nearby black carriage they had failed to notice before, requests.
Reynolds hesitates.
"I don't think that's wise, ma'am."
"Let them approach." The voice repeats, a little sternly. Reynolds sighs in resignation and turns reluctantly back to the Doctor and the sisters, looking at them with warning.
"You will approach the carriage and show all due deference." He instructs, causing Katy and Rose to look at each other with confusion before following the Doctor towards the carriage. A footman jumps down from the back of the carriage and opens the door, revealing...
"Katy. Rose, might I introduce her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Empress of India and Defender of the Faith." The Doctor introduces them reverently, giving a respectful bow to the Imperial Widow.
Katy and Rose immediately lower themselves into a bob.
"Caitlyn Tyler, Your Majesty," Katy greets Queen Victoria.
"Rose Tyler, Ma'am. We apologise for being so naked." Rose indicates between her sister and herself. Queen Victoria gives her a tight smile.
"I've had five daughters. It's nothing to me." She turns her attention to the Doctor. "But you, Doctor. Show me these credentials." He offers the psychic paper to the Queen, who looks down at it. Her eyes widen in surprise. "Why didn't you say so immediately? It states clearly here that you have been appointed by the Lord Provost as my Protector." The Queen exclaims, handing the paper back to him.
Now it was the Doctor's turn to look surprised.
"Does it? Yes, it does." He folds the leather wallet containing the paper shut and shoves it back into his pocket. "Good. Good. Then let me ask, why is Your Majesty travelling by road when there's a train all the way to Aberdeen?" He ponders curiously.
"A tree on the line." Queen Victoria responds.
"An accident?"
"I am the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland," She stated, imperiously. "Everything around me tends to be planned."
"You mean, an assassination attempt?" Katy questions, alarmed.
"What, seriously? There's people out to kill you?" Rose seemed surprised by this.
"I'm quite used to staring down the barrel of a gun." The Queen reassures the three of them.
'Clearly…' Katy thought, a little sarcastically. Reynolds steps forward to grab the Queen's attention.
"Sir Robert MacLeish lives but ten miles hence," He explains. "We've sent word ahead. He'll shelter us for tonight, and then we can reach Balmoral tomorrow." The Queen nods.
"This Doctor and his timorous beasties will come with us." She requests, nodding in the direction of the trio, who look pleasantly surprised. Reynolds looked less than happy about this request, but he dared not deny his Queen's wishes.
He nodded stiffly.
"Yes, Ma'am. We'd better get moving – it's almost nightfall."
"Indeed," the Queen nodded. "And there are stories of wolves in these parts. Fanciful tales intended to scare the children. But good for the blood, I think. Drive on!" She orders, and the footman snaps shut the carriage doors and climbs back up behind the vehicle. The royal procession continues on, and the Doctor, Katy, and Rose walk with the soldiers behind the carriage.
Rose had a puzzled look on her face.
"It's funny though," She piped up, earning the Doctor and Katy's attention. "Because you say assassination and you just think of Kennedy and stuff. Not her." She hooked a thumb in the direction of the carriage just ahead of them. Katy let out a yawn; she hadn't slept very well the night before.
"If I remember one of my classes correctly, by 1879, Victoria had had six attempts on her life?" She looked at the Doctor for clarification, and he grinned and nodded in confirmation, impressed that she had remembered that little factoid.
"Correct. And I'll tell you something else. We just met Queen Victoria!" He quietly exclaimed, so he didn't draw attention to them unnecessarily.
"I know!" Rose grinned excitedly, while Katy smiled and nodded in agreement.
"What a laugh!"
"She was just sitting there." Rose recalled.
"Like a stamp." The Doctor added.
"And that's being said with the highest of amount of respect, right?" Katy clarified, looking pointedly at the nearby soldiers as though to remind them both to watch themselves, so they didn't say the wrong thing about the monarch and cause a riot.
"Absolutely." The Doctor agreed, winking.
"I want her to say we are not amused." Rose decided, and Katy's eyes widened in alarm. "I bet you both five quid I can make her say it."
"Or let's don't and say we did?" Katy countered.
"Oh, come on, Katy. Where's your sense of fun?" Rose complained, slightly annoyed with her sister behaving very uptight. Katy rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her chest.
"Hidden away. To be brought out at a more appropriate time," Katy retorted, flatly. "I'd rather not piss off Queen Victoria, if it's all the same to you."
"Well, if I gambled on that, it'd be an abuse of my privileges of traveler in time." The Doctor interjected, seemingly backing up his girlfriend. Katy smiled at him approvingly. A sly smile spread across Rose's face.
"Ten quid?"
"Done!" The Doctor immediately agreed.
Katy sighed with irritation and frustration, before shaking her head and picking up the pace, moving a little away from them; much to the Doctor's dismay and hurt. However, Rose looked triumphant that the Doctor had seemingly taken her side, as she hooked arms with the Doctor and walked silently beside him for the duration of the procession.
Torchwood House
The master of the house, Sir Robert MacLeish - hereafter referred to as MacLeish – stood at a window on the upper floor of his estate, watching the Royal procession entering his courtyard. He was nervous, and fearful for the safety of not only his wife, who was being held prisoner in the cellar, but also for the rest of his staff, who were trapped down there with her.
Father Angelo – a Tibetan monk – approaches him, turning to also stare out the window at the unsuspecting group below. He had exchanged his traditional orange Tibetan-style robes, for a butler's livery and was looking sinisterly at the terrified Lord.
"I can't do this," MacLeish panicked. "It's treason!"
"Then your wife will suffer the consequences," Angelo promised, narrowing his eyes at him. "And believe me, Sir Robert, she will be devoured."
Courtyard
The estate was both dark and menacing at first glance.
Or at least, that was Katy's first impression when they approached the building, Queen Victoria and her 'protectors' and escorts were temporarily sleeping in overnight. Deep foreboding feelings started developing as they got closer, revealing a man, obviously the Lord or whatever – standing at the front entrance, dressed in his everyday suit, and looking … surprisingly pale and nervous. Katy would've put it down to the fact that this guy was going to be playing host for the Queen of England, a very honourable privilege – and he didn't want to fuck things up. But the fact that he kept sending wary glances towards a group of footmen who stuck out like sore thumbs because of their bald heads, may have factored into the equation as well. Katy frowned curiously at the group of bald footmen; immediately distrusting them at first glance when a cold shiver shot down her spine.
Something was not right.
"Katy? Are you alright?" The Doctor murmurs to her discreetly in low tones. She glances up at him and notes the troubled and concerned frown on his face and in his deep brown eyes.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Katy reassures him with a slight smile on her face. "Don't worry."
The Doctor nodded in acknowledgement but didn't buy the answer she gave him. Something had obviously caught her attention which caused her to act out of sorts. But he decided to let it go for now and looked around discreetly for any onlookers, before grasping her hand in his and raising it to his lips to give her a hopefully reassuring and comforting kiss on the back of it, earning a warm smile from his Katy. This would be seen as the highest form of taboo for him to do that during this timeframe, to an unwedded young woman who was not betrothed to him. Scandalous even. Neither had noticed the look of jealousy thrown in their direction by Rose who had noticed the Doctor's kiss and was now seething.
"But you would let me know if something was wrong, wouldn't you?" The Doctor asked, firmly.
"Of course," Katy agreed. 'I would be an idiot if anything 'Doctor' related happened, and I didn't say anything earlier…' She silently added to herself. The Doctor nodded once again and affectionately squeezed her hand one more time, before letting go and moving away, stuffing his hand back into his pocket casually.
MacLeish stepped forward to greet his guests, while Angelo and some more monks, dressed in liveries, stand at attention.
"Your Majesty." MacLeish greets Victoria respectfully with a bow, trying hard not to show his anxious nature. Victoria didn't seem to have noticed, but both the Doctor and Katy did, and the latter raised an eyebrow.
"Sir Robert. My apologies for the emergency." Victoria accepts the greeting, formally. "And how is Lady Isobel?"
"She's indisposed, I'm afraid." MacLeish stated, apologetically. "She's gone to Edinburgh for the season. And she's taken the cook with her. The kitchens are barely stocked." The Doctor and Katy exchanged looks with each other, both silently agreeing that MacLeish was obviously trying to persuade her Majesty to move on, with a rather flimsy excuse. What was going on? "I wouldn't blame Your Majesty if you wanted to ride on."
The Doctor and Katy frowned at the hopeful tone in the man's voice.
"Oh, not at all." Victoria waves a dismissive hand at the suggestion, causing MacLeish to sag in both despair and disappointment. "I've had quite enough carriage exercise. And this is charming, if rustic." She appraised the estate with an observant glance at the building and surrounding courtyard. "It's my first visit to this house. My late husband spoke of it often. The Torchwood Estate. Now, shall we go inside?" MacLeish nodded in defeat. "And please excuse the naked girls."
"Sorry." Rose flushed in embarrassment, while Katy just fixed a blank look on her face, daring people to comment. The Doctor piped up, trying to defuse the awkward atmosphere.
"They're both feral children," He explained in his 'Scottish burr'. "I brought them for sixpence in Old London Town. It was either them or the Elephant Man, so…" He shrugged, earning a 'what the fuck?' look from his girlfriend, which he promptly ignored. Rose smirked, seeing an opening to her bet with the Doctor.
"Thinks he's funny but I'm so not amused," Rose quoted, earning daggers from Katy and a look of stern confusion from Victoria. "What do you think, Ma'am?" She prompted, and Victoria just stared at her.
"It hardly matters. Shall we proceed?"
"So close." Rose grins at the Doctor, who gives her a look of indifference as Victoria goes inside the estate. When she is safely inside, Reynolds immediately turns towards his soldiers to address them.
"Makerson and Ramsey, you will escort the property. Hurry up."
"Yes, sir." Both men immediately turn and pick up a small, locked box from the carriage and carry it into the house, grabbing the trio's interest. The Doctor gestures curiously at the soldiers' bounty.
"So, what's in there, then?" He requests, politely.
Reynolds regards him with a stern scowl.
"Property of the Crown. You will dismiss any further thoughts, sir." The Doctor nods, taking the captain's suggestion seriously and steps back. "The rest of you go to the rear of the house. Assume your designated positions." Reynolds continues barking orders as the soldiers went about their business. The Doctor, Katy, and Rose watch all this with bewildered interest.
"Curiouser and curiouser." Katy quotes, earning an amused grin from the Doctor for the unintended reference to Alice in Wonderland and the three of them walk inside the estate.
Observatory
The Doctor, Katy, and Rose follow the Queen and MacLeish, and a small group of soldiers into the estate's observatory. It was an enormous room, with stone walls, and concrete floors, floor to ceiling windows all around the room, a set of heavy stained oak double doors which they had just walked through to get into the room, and a domed checkered glass roof that allowed viewers to see beautiful constellations of stars, glittering like diamonds, and the full moon on a clear night. But what really stood out in the room, was a telescope; a very – to both Katy and Rose – old-fashioned one. It stood right in the middle of the room, tilted towards an open window.
Victoria eyed the bronze telescope with mild interest.
"This, I take it, is the famous Endeavour."
"All my father's work," MacLeish explained. "Build by hand in his final years." He smiled somewhat sadly. "Became something of an obsession. He spent his money on this rather than caring for the house or himself."
"I wish I'd met him," the Doctor commented sympathetically, as he, Katy, and Rose strode up to look at it closer. "I like him. That thing's beautiful." The Doctor turns towards MacLeish, gesturing at the telescope by hooking his thumb over his shoulder. "Can I?"
"Help yourself."
"What did he model it on?" Katy asked curiously, earning surprised looks from both the Doctor and Rose at her question. "What? One of my friends was into astronomy. We used to go out onto the roof of his apartment block and check out the stars and nearby planets with his telescope." Katy stated rather defensively.
"Lee was into astronomy?" Rose clarified, looking astonished. Katy nodded, and Rose shrugged looking pleasantly surprised. "Who knew?"
Neither girl had noticed the Doctor had stiffened the second Katy had mentioned that one of her male friends had contemplated the stars with her, pre-him. He now wore a very stroppy, jealous frown on his face that he was attempting to disguise as deep concentration when he looked through the eyepiece; but inwardly he wasn't happy.
"I know nothing about it," MacLeish admitted regretfully. "To be honest, most of us thought him a little, shall we say, eccentric. I wish now I'd spent more time with him and listened to his stories." He sighed heavily. The Doctor straightened up from his stoop to look through the eyepiece, and with a slightly possessive scowl that he was aiming at an oblivious Katy, spoke up.
"It's a bit rubbish," He commented and both Katy and Rose looked at him with wide eyes. "How many prisms has it got? Way too many. The magnification's gone right over the top. That's stupid kind of—" He fell out of the burr to mutter to the sisters. "Am I being rude again?"
"Yep," The sisters confirmed in unison.
"But it's pretty," the Doctor quickly attempted to smooth things over. "It's very pretty." He cleared his throat awkwardly, still sending sideways glances at Katy.
"And the imagination of it should be applauded." Victoria stated, sternly.
"Mmm. Thought you might disapprove, Your Majesty." Rose attempted once again to get the Queen to say her famous catchphrase so she could win the bet. "Stargazing. Isn't that a bit fanciful? You could easily not be amused, or something?" She was met with annoyed, confused or exasperated looks. "No?"
Victoria chose to ignore Rose's question.
"This device surveys the infinite work of God. What could be finer?" She stated, wistfully. "Sir Robert's father was an example to us all. A polymath, steeped in astronomy and sciences, yet equally well versed in folklore and fairytales."
"Stars and magic. I like him more and more." The Doctor grinned approvingly.
"Oh, my late husband enjoyed his company," Victoria agreed with the Doctor. "Prince Albert himself was acquainted with many rural superstitions, coming as he did from Saxe Coburg."
"That's Bavaria." The Doctor explained to a confused Katy and Rose.
"When Albert was told about your local wolf, he was transported." Victoria finished her story.
"So, what's this wolf, then?" The Doctor questioned.
"It's just a story." MacLeish shrugged.
"Then tell it." Katy encouraged him. MacLeish hesitated, looking in the direction of Father Angelo whose eyes narrowed. Taking a chance, MacLeish spoke up.
"It's said that—"
"Excuse me, sir." Father Angelo intercepted. "Perhaps her Majesty's party could repair to their rooms. It's almost dark." He suggested.
"Of course. Yes, of course." MacLeish backed down.
"And then supper," Victoria declared before looking disapprovingly at both Katy and Rose's outfits. "And could we find some clothes for Misses Tyler?" Both Katy and Rose blushed. "I'm tired of nakedness."
"It's not amusing, is it?" Rose hinted, and Katy glowers at her.
"No. You're really not." Katy agreed. The Doctor cleared his throat pointedly, as Victoria continues to address MacLeish.
"Sir Robert, your wife must have left some clothes. See to it. We shall dine at seven and talk more of this wolf." The Queen glances up at the darkening midnight blue sky. "After all, there is a full moon tonight." MacLeish paled dramatically.
"So, there is, Ma'am."
Bedroom
The Doctor was led in one direction, presumably towards where they were going to be dining that night, while Katy and Rose where escorted towards a nearby room that housed a king-sized poster bed and a large wardrobe, which Rose promptly went over to investigate its contents. Katy followed, but only half-heartedly looked for a dress of her own to borrow, as she was still extremely uncomfortable about the entire situation. It was obvious that something horrible was going on, but what it was still remained a mystery that Katy was determined to find out. Eventually, Rose settled on a royal blue velvet dress, holding it against herself and checking out her reflection in the mirror.
"Aren't you going to find a dress, Katy?" Rose questioned her sister, who was sitting on the edge of the poster bed, deep in thought.
"Finding a dress is the least of my worries right now, Rose." Katy retorted, still mulling over all the strange things she had witnessed during the last few hours. It hadn't helped that Rose persisted in her idiotic plan of getting the Queen of England – who was far more patient than Katy thought – to say 'we are not amused' every few minutes.
At least the Doctor hadn't been joining in, thank God.
"Are you really going to disobey the Queen?" Rose taunted, obviously still miffed about the fact that Katy was thwarting every attempt she made into winning the bet she'd made with the Doctor, and also trying to get him to notice her instead of Katy. She opens another cupboard and stifles a scream when she discovers a housemaid cowering inside.
"What's wrong?" Katy got to her feet and raced over to investigate what Rose had found inside the cupboard. She gasps when she sees the housemaid, who was looking up at both of them with large, frightened eyes. Cautiously, Katy kneels down to the maid's level and smiles at her. "Hello, are you alright?" She asks, politely. The maid shakes her head, as the sisters coax the frightened girl out and perches either side her on the poster bed.
"They came through the house," The maid replies in fear. "In the excitement, they took the Steward and the Master, and my lady." Tears started welling up in the girl's eyes and Katy reached into her pocket and withdrew a hanky, passing it over to the maid who took it gratefully and starts mopping at her eyes.
"Listen," Rose speaks up, gently. "We've got a friend. He's called the Doctor. He'll know what to do."
"Come with us." Katy suggests, and immediately the maid shakes her head.
"Oh, but I can't, Miss."
"What's your name?" Katy requests, patiently.
"Flora." The maid replies, still wiping at her eyes with Katy's handkerchief. Katy and Rose exchange looks between them, and a truce is formed; setting aside their annoyances to help this obviously distressed girl get to safety.
"Flora, we'll be safe." Rose reassures Flora, who looks at her skeptically. "There's more people arrived downstairs, soldiers and everything, and they can help us. We promise."
"Come on. Okay?" Katy wheedles and Flora reluctantly nods. "Come on."
Corridor
Katy leads the way out of the bedroom, with Flora in between herself and Rose, who came up at the rear. She looks left, then right, before stepping out into the corridor and gesturing for her sister and Flora to follow.
"Okay, I think we're safe for the moment. Let's go." Katy suggests and the three of them walk as silently as they could down the corridor, trying to locate the others and the Doctor.
Especially the Doctor.
However, they turn a corner and find one of the soldiers lying on the floor. Flora begins to panic.
"Oh, Misses. I did warn you." She frets. Frowning, Katy tiptoes quickly over to the soldier's side and felt for a pulse. She finds one, and sighs with relief.
"He's still alive." Katy confirms, as Rose and Flora come closer to see for themselves.
"He must be drugged or something," Rose mused.
Suddenly, Father Angelo grabs Flora from behind, cupping a hand over the girl's mouth to stop her from crying out loud and drags her away. Alarmed, Katy and Rose look in the maid's direction and their eyes widen when they see that she's missing. But before they could do anything, two more monks appear and pounce upon the sisters, taking them away while a fifth monk removes the sleeping soldier.
Dining Room
Meanwhile, oblivious to the danger his girlfriend and Rose were in, the Doctor sits at an elongated dining table with Queen Victoria, who sat at the head of the table, with MacLeish sitting beside her. Reynolds sits beside the Doctor, looking nervous but pleased to be where he was. The Doctor was concerned that neither Katy nor Rose had shown up yet and was contemplating excusing himself and going off to find them, when Father Angelo comes into the dining room and walks straight towards him.
"Your companions beg an apology, Doctor. Their clothing has somewhat delayed them." Angelo explains, and the Doctor relaxes a little and waves a nonchalant hand.
"Oh, that's all right. Save them a wee bit of ham." He requests, with a warm smile.
"The feral children could probably eat it raw." Victoria jokes, light-heartedly.
"Very wise, Ma'am. Very witty." Reynolds guffawed, earning raised eyebrows from the rest of the table guests.
"Slightly witty, perhaps." Victoria corrects Reynolds. "I know you rarely get the chance to dine with me, Captain, but don't get too excited. I shall contain my wit in case I do you further injury." Reynolds deflates a little.
"Yes, Ma'am. Sorry, Ma'am."
"Besides," the Doctor pipes up, trying to take some of the heat away from Reynolds. "We're all waiting on Sir Robert. Come, sir. You promised us a tale of nightmares." He states, looking encouragingly at the Lord.
Victoria nodded in agreement.
"Indeed. Since my husband's death, I find myself with more of a taste for supernatural fiction." She stated, nostalgically. The Doctor observes her empathically.
"You must miss him." He comments, sadly.
"Very much," Victoria confirms. "Oh, completely. And that's the charm of a ghost story, isn't it? Not the scares and chills, that's just for children, but the hope of some contact with the great beyond. We all want some message from that place. It's the Creator's greatest mystery that we're allowed no such consolation. The dead stay silent, and we must wait." She then turns her attention back on MacLeish. "Come. Begin your tale, Sir Robert. There's a chill in the air. The wind is howling through the eaves. Tell us of monsters."
Cellar
The sounds of chains dragging on the ground, and whisperings rouse Katy from being knocked out. By the sweetness she could taste in her mouth, it was clear that she and Rose had been drugged. Katy sits up, looking around groggily. To her surprise, she was surrounded by her ladyship; the Lady Isobel MacLeish, the Steward, and other household servants including a very frightened and tearful Flora who was huddled with the rest of the housemaids. Rose sits up beside her, also looking disoriented from being knocked out, and both sisters immediately spot a cage just in front of them, with a dark robed young monk sitting inside it, his eyes shut. An eerie calmness shrouds him, that made Katy's skin crawl.
"Who is that?" She murmurs, uncomfortably.
"Don't make a sound," Her ladyship – hereafter referred to as Isobel – warns fearfully. "They said if we scream or shout, then he will slaughter us." Katy pales, but Rose frowned disbelievingly.
"But he's in a cage," Rose argues. "He's a prisoner. He's the same as us." Katy lays a hand on Rose's shoulder, causing the blonde to turn and look quizzically at her sister.
"I somehow doubt that, Rose," Katy stated. "Every instinct I possess tells me he is not normal and is sending me urgent 'RUN' signals. If it weren't for these manacles, I'd be heeding them." Rose opened her mouth to protest once again but is interrupted by Isobel.
"He's nothing like us," She insists, firmly. "That creature is not mortal." The young man chooses that moment to open his eyes, looking directly at the sisters.
They are completely black.
Dining Room
A solemn expression falls across MacLeish's face as he begins his tale to Victoria, the Doctor, and Reynolds.
"The story goes back three hundred years. Every full moon, the howling rings through the valley. The next morning, livestock is found ripped apart and devoured." He narrates, earning a disbelieving scoff from Reynolds.
"Tales like this just disguise the work of thieves." He states, reaching for his glass of wine and taking a generous sip from it. "Steal a sheep and blame a wolf, simple as that."
"But sometimes a child goes missing," MacLeish continues as though Reynolds hadn't said anything. "Once in a generation, a boy will vanish from his homestead."

Despite the overwhelming fear she was feeling, Katy stared defiantly back at the young monk, who smirks back, sensing a challenge. Rose, however, gets up from where she had been sitting beside Katy and starts moving towards the cage … or at least as far as her chained and manacled hands would allow her to go.
"Rose! What the hell are you doing?" Katy hissed in alarm.
"Don't, child." Isobel warns. But Rose ignores them both, deciding to foolishly interrogate the mysterious and very obviously dangerous monk.
"Who are you?" She questions, curiously.
"Don't enrage him!" the Steward begs.
"Where are you from?" Rose continues, persistently. "You're not from Earth. What planet are you from?"
"Rose, get your arse back over here. Why state the bloody obvious?" Katy growls. But the damage has already been done. The monk had already taken interest in both sisters.
"Oh, intelligence." He answers with a softly spoken Scottish burr. Katy's eyes widen, surprised that this creature had actually answered them. She decided to question him also.
"Where were you born?" Katy asks, cautiously.
"This body?" The young man responds. "Ten miles away. A weakling, heartsick boy, stolen away at night by the brethren for my cultivation. I carved out his soul and sat in his heart."
Dining Room
His interest peaked, the Doctor sits forward eagerly and focuses upon MacLeish. And yet, part of him was also both curious and concerned about how tense and fidgety the Lord appeared; and yet all he was actually doing was telling a story.
"Are there descriptions of the creature?" He inquires, rapt.
"Oh, yes, Doctor," MacLeish nods. "Drawings and woodcarvings. And it's not merely a wolf. It's more than that. This is a man who becomes an animal." The Doctor's eyes widened with excitement.
"A werewolf?"
Cellar
The young monk continues observing the sisters, who exchange looks with each other. Both silently decide to try and grab more information about this creature, to better help the Doctor when he finally comes barrelling in to come and save them. Rose re-directs her attention back on the monk.
"All right, so the body's human. But what about you, the thing inside?" Rose questions.
"So far from home." The monk observes, looking intrigued.
"If you want to get back home, we can help." Rose misinterprets what the monk had said, indicating between her sister and herself, and the Doctor who was still unaware of the danger they all were in.
"Uh, Rose. That's not what he meant—"
"Why would I leave this place?" The monk interrupts Katy, frowning at Rose. "A world of industry, of workforce and warfare. I could turn it to such purpose." He adds with a touch of wonder in his voice.
"How would you do that?" Katy asked.
"I would migrate to the Holy Monarch." The monk responded like it should've been obvious, and Katy groaned in realisation. She wanted to kick herself that she didn't come to that same conclusion before.
"You mean Queen Victoria?" Rose mumbled, shocked.
"With one bite, I would pass into her blood, and then it begins." The monk grinned sinisterly. "The Empire of the Wolf."
"You're a bloody werewolf," Katy muttered underneath her breath, looking horrified.
"Many questions." The monk mused, before suddenly launching himself at the bars of his cage, looking at Katy with wide eyes. "Look. Inside your eyes. You've seen it too." He realises, in amazement.
"Seen what?" Rose demands.
"Not you," The now revealed werewolf retorts. "Her," He indicates to Katy, who looks back at him guardedly. "She's seen the wolf." Rose pouts in anger, then flinches when he redirects his attention on her. "But you, there is something of the Wolf about you."
"I don't know what you mean." Rose stammers, fearfully.
"Both of you burn like the sun," The werewolf turns his attention towards the open cellar doors with a triumphant smile. "But all I require is the moon."
Dining Room
The full moon hangs high in the sky, as MacLeish continues his 'story'. The more the Doctor listened, the more his curiosity grew.
"My father didn't treat it as a story. He said it was fact." MacLeish explained. "He even claimed to have communed with the beast, to have learned its purpose." He shook his head in despair. "I should have listened. His work was hindered. He made enemies. There's a monastery in the Glen of Saint Catherine. The Brethren opposed my father's investigations." The moon glows brighter in the sky, drawing Angelo towards it. He starts chanting 'lupus deus est' over and over again, but none of them appear to notice him doing this at first.
"Perhaps they thought his work ungodly." Victoria suggested.
"That's what I thought," MacLeish nodded. "But now I wonder. What if they had a different reason for wanting the story kept quiet? What if they turned from God and worshipped the wolf?" He had finally taken notice of Angelo, who was still chanting in Latin over by the window and tried to lay down the hint. Thankfully, the Doctor cottoned on rather quickly.
"And what if they were with us right now?" He stated, frowning in Angelo's direction.
Cellar
Everyone except for the werewolf jump when the cellar doors are flung open, and the moonlight shines in on the cage.
"Moonlight!" The werewolf moans happily, flinging off the heavy cloak he was wearing, as an unnatural wind starts to blow through the cellar. Now was time to act, if they wanted to survive. Katy and Rose spring into action and scramble to their feet.
"All of you! Stop looking at it!" Katy orders the frightened prisoners, firmly. "Flora don't look. Listen to us. Grab hold of the chain and pull!" She instructs. "Come on! With us! Pull!" Both Katy and Rose turn, and grab hold of the chain securing them to the wall and start using their weight to tug against the wall. No one else moves, too busy watching the werewolf beginning his transformation.
Rose growls with frustration.
"We said pull! Stop your whining and listen! All of you!" Rose scowls at Isobel who looks at both girls with shock. "And that means you, your Ladyship." Isobel immediately gets to her feet and moves to copy the sisters. The servants and the Stewart follow their Lady's example (causing both sisters to roll their eyes in annoyance). "Now come on, pull!"
Dining Room
The Queen followed the Doctor's gaze and noticed what she believed to be one of MacLeish's servants chanting. And judging by the troubled frown on this mysterious Doctor's face, this was obviously not a good thing. She aims an accusing scowl at MacLeish.
"What is the meaning of this?" She demands, authoritatively. Reynolds immediately gets up to aid Victoria in her interrogation, believing that she was being threatened somehow.
"Explain yourself, Sir Robert!" He orders, and MacLeish looks at the Queen contritely.
"I'm sorry, Your Majesty, they've got my wife." The Doctor's eyes widen in alarm, when he realises something.
"Katy! Rose!" He turns and looks determinedly at MacLeish, as Reynolds pulls out his revolver and aims it at the chanting monk, who was still paying none of them any mind, intent on his task. "Where are they? Sir Robert, come on!" He runs away from the table, pulling MacLeish along with him down the corridor to show him the way, leaving behind Victoria, Reynolds and Angelo.
Cellar
Unaware that the Doctor was now on their way to rescue them, Katy and Rose continue coaching the rest of the prisoners to pull the chain from the wall with all their might, while the werewolf behind them continues to become more vulpine by the minute. It was not a pretty sight, and even less a pleasant sound to hear as his bones break, pop and shift into place.
"One. Two. Three. Pull!" Rose chants, and they all grunt trying to loosen the chain from the wall.
"Again!" Katy shouts. "One. Two. Three. Pull!"
Dining Room
Reynolds approaches Angelo, stepping in front of Victoria, as he continues trying to extract an answer from the imposter chanting in front of him.
"Tell me, sir. I demand to know your intention!" He orders, sternly.
"Lupus deus est. Lupus deus est." Angelo continues chanting, not paying the captain any mind, which only made the soldier angrier.
"What is it that you want?"
Finally, Angelo pauses in his chanting and turns towards Reynolds, looking sinister and defiant.
"The throne." He replied simply, alarming both Victoria and Reynolds, before he steps forward and disarms Reynolds.
Cellar
The desperate group of prisoners were nearly free from their chains. Unfortunately, the werewolf behind them was already fully formed and examining its paws. Katy notices this and nudges Rose who looks over and pales.
"One. Two. Three. Pull!" They say in unison, and finally the end of the chain breaks free from the wall, just as the Doctor and MacLeish finally kick their way into the cellar.
"Katy! Rose!" the Doctor calls out frantically. Rose glares at the Doctor for his tardiness.
"Where the hell have you been?" She glowers, but the Doctor has already spotted the werewolf who was sitting in his cage and taking in the newcomers with interest. A bedazzled expression passes over the Doctor's face.
"Oh, that's beautiful," The Doctor compliments the werewolf, as MacLeish rounds everybody up and starts shoving them towards the open cellar door.
"Come on, go. Get out!" He urges, as the werewolf begins to break out of the cage. The Doctor snaps out of it, and realises the danger he is in. He immediately rushes over to both Katy and Rose and seizes their hands in his.
"Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out!" He yells, tugging them towards the cellar door.
"Come on!" Rose says to Katy, who nods and goes.
The Doctor can't help but stare at the werewolf with admiration, then ducks when it picks up a piece of his cage and chucks it at him. He hauls ass towards the door, shuts and locks the door with his sonic screwdriver.
"Time to go!" He says to Katy and Rose, who nod in agreement and take off down the corridor.
Dining Room
While the rescue mission was taking place in the cellar, Victoria and Reynolds were having their own confrontation with Angelo. The werewolf's howl echoes through the house.
"I take it, sir, that you halted my train to bring me here?" Victoria questioned him, rhetorically.
"We have waited so long for one of your journeys to coincide with the moon." Angelo responds, a smug and arrogant smirk on his face.
Victoria's eyes narrow angrily.
"Then you have waited in vain," She informs him. "After six attempts on my life…" Victoria pulls out a small gun from within her handbag and points it at Angelo, who looks at it, unimpressed. "… I am hardly unprepared."
"Oh, I don't think so, woman," Angelo sneers rudely at Victoria whose eyes widen at the insolence and arrogance of the monk.
"The correct form of address is Your Majesty." Victoria corrects him, before shooting Angelo with the gun.
