A/N: Welcome back! Ready for the next chapter? These two chapters take place during the Doctor Who episode 'The Family of Blood'.

I do not own Doctor Who. All I own is my OC Katy, and this story. Please review, and no flaming will be tolerated.

RUDE AWAKENING

"Everyone's looking at me.
I'm running around in circles.
A quiet desperation's building higher.
I've got to remember this is just a game."
– Thirty Seconds to Mars: 'A Beautiful Lie' (A Beautiful Lie [2005]).

Village Hall

Smith stared at Baines with horror. Choosing between Katy and Martha about who should live or die? The answer was obvious: neither of them. The idea of condemning anyone to death was unthinkable. How could they ever suggest such a thing?

"Make your decision, Mister Smith." Jenny orders.

"Perhaps if that human heart breaks, the Time Lord will emerge." Baines taunts him mercilessly. Out of sight, Latimer takes the fob watch from his pocket and opens it. Golden energy shimmers and the Family turn their heads quickly in his direction.

'…Time Lord…'

"It's him!" Baines yells out in excitement. Latimer closes the watch when he is confident he had successfully gotten the Family's attention. The distraction was long enough to let Martha get the gun off Jenny and reverse the tables on her, using the older maid as a shield while she aims the gun at Baines.

"All right! One more move and I shoot!" Martha warns. However, instead of looking concerned, Baines merely looks amused.

"Oh, the maid is full of fire."

"And you can shut up!" Martha snarls at him, firing the gun at the ceiling, causing the crowd to scream and panic.

"Careful, Son of Mine." Clark warns. "This is all for you so you can live forever." He tells him, sounding like the typical doting father who only wanted the best for his children. Baines raises his gun at Martha.

"Shoot you down!"

"Try it! We'll die together," Martha promises, causing Baines to hesitate for a split second, before smirking.

"Would you really pull the trigger? Looks too scared."

"Scared and holding a gun's a good combination. Do you want to risk it?" Martha points out, and this time the Family lower their guns. Katy moves away from Clark and goes directly towards Smith who immediately pulls her behind him protectively. "Doctor, get everyone out. There's a door at the side. It's over there." Martha indicates to the side of the room with her head, but Smith hesitates. "Go on, do it, Mister Smith, I mean you!" Martha instructs impatiently. Katy rolls her eyes and takes charge of the situation.

"Do what she says." Katy suggests. "Everybody out, now. Don't argue, they're mad. That's all we need to know. Come on, quickly! Outside, all of you!" The villagers run out, screaming. Latimer is among the last to leave before Katy and Smith who linger behind, waiting for Martha.

"Move yourself, boy. Back to the school, quickly!" Smith scolds Latimer who leaves the hall but doesn't go far just yet.

"And you. Go on. Just shift." Martha urges Smith and Katy, who looks at her friend with concern.

"What about you?" Smith asks. Martha just rolls her eyes.

"Mister Smith, I think you should escort your lady friend to safety, don't you?" Martha reminds him of Katy's presence, even though Katy was more than capable of protecting herself. But they still had to keep up the assumption that Katy was a 'weak and feeble' female. Katy goes over to him and gently grabs his arm.

"Come on, John. Hurry!" Katy insists and both she and Smith leave the hall. Once they leave, Jenny manages to get away from Martha and rejoins her Family.

"Don't try anything. I'm warning you, or Sonny boy gets it." Martha warns, but now that it was just them and her; the Family weren't as concerned any more. Baines does a casual eye sweep of Martha.

"She's almost brave, this one." He observed.

"I should've taken her form. Much more fun. So much spirit." Jenny mused, as Martha slowly starts to back away from them when they advance towards her slowly.

"What happened to Jenny? Is she gone?" Martha asks, with trepidation.

"She is consumed. Her body's mine." Jenny replies, and Martha's eyes widen in horror.

"You mean she's dead?"

"Yes," Jenny smirked. "And she went with precious little dignity. All that – AHHH – screaming." Jenny taunts her, before a scarecrow grabs Martha from behind, startling her.

"Get the gun!" Baines orders the scarecrow, who takes the gun, and Martha doesn't hesitate to run out of the hall. "Good work, soldier." Baines compliments the scarecrow.

Outside the Village Hall

Martha runs out into the chilly night air and nearly groans in frustration when she sees both Smith and Katy still standing there. She grabs his arm as she runs by him and gives Katy an exasperated look.

"Don't just stand there, move! God, you're rubbish as a human. Come on!" Martha growls angrily and takes off into a run with Smith and Katy following her. The Family emerge onto the quiet street, flanked by their scarecrow henchmen.

"Run!" Baines taunts the trio, grinning from ear to ear. "Ah, this is super. We've been in hiding for too long. This is sport!"

"I can smell the schoolteacher. He's gone back to his academy," Jenny relayed, coming to stand beside him. Her body suddenly glows green. "This body has traces of memory. Was once her friend. Martha and her librarian friend would go walking to the west." She turns towards Clark. "Husband of Mine, follow the maid's scent. Go to the west. Find out what they were keeping secret." She instructs, smiling sinisterly.

"Soldiers!" Clark orders the scarecrows to follow him, and he leaves.

"As for you, Mother of Mine, let's go to school." Baines states, and the two of them head off in the direction of the boarding school.

Farringham School

Smith, Katy and Martha rush into the school as fast as their feet could carry them, before Smith shuts the main doors behind him. Then, much to the surprise and dismay of both Katy and Martha, grabs a large handheld bell and starts ringing it.

"What are you doing?" Martha demands. Smith barely looks at Martha as he continues to ring the bell.

"Maybe one man can't fight them, but this school teaches us to stand together." He sternly tells her. "Take arms! Take arms!" Smith shouts loud enough for the entire school to hear him.

"You can't do that!" Martha panics, and Smith aims a frustrated glower at her.

"You want me to fight, don't you?" He counters, before continuing to rally the students. "Take arms! Take arms!" Hutchinson comes running down the corridor towards the three of them, looking confused about why he was being summoned at this late hour.

"I say sir, what's the matter?" He asks, straightening up his school uniform as best as he could.

"Enemy at the door, Hutchinson. Enemy at the door. Take arms!" Smith briefs him as he continues to ring the handbell.

Outside the school

Outside, Jenny and Baines listen to the commotion and see the students rushing about, arming themselves to fight against an enemy they still had no idea about. Many of them looked bewildered and drowsy; most likely because they had just bolted out of bed when they had heard the handbell. But others were alert and wore determined expressions, eager to impress and follow the instructions laid down by their teachers.

Baines looked very amused.

"They're sounding the alarms," He mused. However, Jenny was more cautious than Baines and lays a slightly restraining hand on her 'son's' arm.

"I wouldn't be so pleased, Son of Mine. These bodies are silly and hot. They can damage and die." She reminds him of their current predicament. "That's why we need the Time Lord."

"Indeed." Baines straightens up and focuses. "They will have guns. Perhaps a little caution." He turns and looks down at Lucy, with a calculating smirk. "Sister of Mine, you're such a small little thing. Find a way in and spy on them." He orders, and Lucy nods and casually skips towards the school; her red balloon bobbing behind her as she went.

Farringham School

Smith supervises handing out weapons to the boys, while both Katy and Martha hover nearby, both looking mystified by what they were seeing. Katy grabs Martha's attention.

"We need to do something. The Doctor will never forgive himself if he learns that he was responsible for a massacre. Especially if the target was impervious to bullets." She tells Martha, who nodded.

"I know. I'm working on it." She reassures her friend, before wading over to Smith's side to warm him of the pointlessness of the situation. "You can't do this, Doctor. Mister Smith!" She corrects herself. However, Smith chooses to ignore her, focusing on arming the students.

"Redfern, maintain position over the stable yard. Faster now. That's it!"

"They're just boys," Martha reminds Smith who looks at her with frustration. "You can't ask them to fight. They don't stand a chance."

"They're cadets, Miss Jones." Smith argues, stubbornly refusing to stand down. "They are trained to defend the King and all his citizens and properties." He comes to attention when Rocastle suddenly storms into the room, looking apoplectic with rage.

Martha falls back to stand beside Katy.

"What in thunder's name is this?" He roared, making every schoolboy within hearing range cringe in fear of their headmaster's wrath. "Before I devise an excellent and endless series of punishments for each and every one of you, could someone explain very simply and immediately exactly what is going on?" Rocastle orders, and Smith wades in to take responsibility.

"Headmaster, I have to report the school is under attack." Smith reports in. However, Rocastle is not amused and looks at him with scepticism.

"Really?" He sneers. "Is that so? Perhaps you and I should have a word in private."

"No, I promise you, sir." Smith insists. "I was in the village with Miss Tyler. It's Baines, sir. Jeremy Baines and Mister Clark from Oakham Farm. They've gone mad, sir. They've got guns." The hard expression on Rocastle's face fades and he becomes serious. "They've already murdered people in the village. I saw it happen."

"Miss Tyler, is that so?" Rocastle asks Katy, who steps forward and nodded vehemently.

"I'm afraid it's true, sir." Katy confirmed.

"Murder on our own soil?"

"I saw it. Yes." Katy responded, a little irritated with having to repeat herself when once should've been enough proof. Rocastle straightens up and clears his throat; a little bit shamefaced for having doubted Smith.

"Perhaps you did well then, Mister Smith. What makes you think the danger's coming here?"

"Well, sir, they said…" Smith hesitated, and Katy took mercy on him and waded in to help him explain the situation.

"Baines threatened Mister Smith, sir. Said he'd follow him." Katy stated, confidently.

"Very well," Rocastle nodded, looking grave. "You boys, remain on guard." He instructs some nearby students before he turns to two of his colleagues who had arrived to investigate what was going on too. "Mister Snell, telephone for the police. Mister Philips, with me. We shall investigate." Martha steps into his path, much to Rocastle's annoyance.

"No! But it's not safe out there." She cautions him. Rocastle ignores Martha's plea and turns to Smith.

"Mister Smith, it seems your favourite servant is giving me advice. You will control her, sir." He orders, before he and Mister Philips leave. Martha glares after Rocastle, knowing it was pointless trying to tell the misogynistic headmaster anything, and promptly turns to Katy who also looked irritated with Rocastle too.

"I've got to find that watch," She tells Katy, who nodded.

"Okay. Please be careful." She urges Martha before following her down the corridor, heading for her quarters to change out of her dress into something more appropriate for searching the school for the Doctor's fob watch and lending help where it was needed, leaving behind Smith, who watches them go, looking conflicted. Katy and Martha unknowingly pass by Latimer, who is hiding with the watch, listening to it whispering urgently in his head.

'…Hold me. Keep me safe. Keep me dark. Keep me closed. The time is not right. Not yet. Not while the Family is abroad. Danger...' The Doctor's voice whispers to him.

Outside the school

Rocastle and Philips head for the front of the school and are confronted with Baines and Jenny; flanked by their scarecrow soldiers. Both of them wore cocky smirks on their faces, knowing that Rocastle and Philips were no match for them.

"So. Baines and one of the cleaning staff. There's always a woman involved." He mutters out loud. "Am I to gather that some practical joke has got out of hand?"

"Headmaster, sir. Good evening, sir. Come to give me a caning, sir? Would you like that, sir?" Baines taunts Rocastle, who bristles at what he perceives as Baines being insolent, rather than a dangerous alien wearing the guise of Baines.

"Keep a civil tongue, boy." Rocastle suggests, sternly. Philips wades in to defuse the situation peacefully.

"Now come on, everyone. I suspect alcohol has played its part in this." He theorises. Smith watches all this from a window above the courtyard, looking increasingly worried about the situation. "Let's all just calm down." Philips addresses Baines with disapproval. "And who are these friends of yours, Baines, in fancy dress?"

"Do you like them, Mister Philips?" Baines walks over to one of the scarecrow soldiers standing nearest to him. "I made them myself. I'm ever so good at science, sir. Look!" He tugs sharply on the scarecrow's arm, ripping it from what might've been an arm socket if the scarecrow has been a real person in disguise. "Molecular fringe animation fashioned in the shape of straw men. My own private army, sir. It's ever so good, sir." Baines mocks his former teachers, who look very disturbed at what they had just seen.

"Baines, step apart from this company and come inside with me." Rocastle instructs. However, Baines shakes his head.

"No, sir. You, sir, you will send us Mister John Smith. That's all we want, sir, Mister John Smith and whatever he's done with his Time Lord consciousness. Then we'd be very happy to leave you alone." Baines counters Rocastle's instructions.

"You speak with someone else's voice, Baines. Who might that be?" Rocastle asks, curiously.

"We are the Family of Blood," Baines confirms.

"Mister Smith said there had been deaths," Rocastle questioned.

"Yes, sir. And they were good, sir." Baines grinned with delight, making Rocastle shudder with disgust that he was taking delight in someone else's death.

"Well, I warn you, the school is armed." Rocastle warns. Baines scans the school, and all the curious schoolboys who had come to the window to see the commotion for themselves. The grin broadens on his face.

"All your little tin soldiers. But tell me, sir, will they thank you?" Baines asks a visibly confused Rocastle.

"I don't understand."

"What do you know of history, sir? What do you know of next year?" Baines continues interrogating Rocastle, despite the man's obvious confusion of events that had not yet come to pass.

"You're not making sense, Baines."

"1914, sir." Baines clarifies. "Because the Family has travelled far and wide looking for Mister Smith and, oh, the things we have seen. War is coming. In foreign fields, war of the whole wide world, with all your boys falling down in the mud. Do you think they will thank the man who taught them it was glorious?" Baines taunts Rocastle, who bristles indignantly.

"Don't you forget, boy, I've been a soldier. I was in South Africa. I used my dead mates for sandbags. I fought with the butt of my rifle when the bullets ran out, and I would go back there tomorrow for King and Country!" He shouts angrily.

"Et cetera, et cetera." Baines drawled in boredom before vaporising Philips in cold blood with his gun. Rocastle jumps back in both horror and shock. "Run along, Headmaster. Run back to school. And send us Mister Smith!"

Farringham School

A shaken Rocastle confronts Smith when he rushes back inside the school. Although, he attempts to retain some of his composure in front of his students, as to not arouse suspicion and fear.

"Mister Philips has been murdered, Mister Smith. Can you tell me why?" Rocastle demands, sternly.

"Honestly, sir, I have no idea." Smith admitted, truthfully. "And the telephone line's been disconnected. We are on our own." Unhappy with these strange turns of events, Rocastle shakes his head, despairingly.

"If we have to make a fight of it, then make a fight we shall." Rocastle ultimately decides, before flagging down Hutchinson to give his instructions. "Hutchinson, we'll build a barricade within the courtyards. Fortify the entrances, build our defences." Rocastle then addressed any schoolboy who was within hearing range; his voice acting like a bullhorn to be heard. "Gentlemen, in the name of the King, we shall stand against them."

"Yes, sir!" The boys saluted before rallying each other together to accomplish their tasks. "Right, come on. Let's get moving!"

"Barricade the kitchens. Secure the passageway to the stables!" Hutchinson calls out orders, before coming across Latimer still hiding away with the Doctor's fob watch in his hands. He glares angrily at him, dragging Latimer out of his hiding place. "You coward. You'll do your duty, Latimer, with the rest of us."

Smith's study

While the school was organising itself for an upcoming battle, Martha and Katy were searching around the study for the fob watch. But neither of them were getting anywhere fast, and it was beginning to both worry and frustrate them.

"This is bad and getting worse by the minute." Martha mutters, looking underneath a nearby cushion on Smith's settee, just in case the watch happened to have fallen between them without their knowledge.

"Thanks for stating the obvious, Martha. It's really appreciated at this moment." Katy bit back, sarcastically. But then she sinks down onto the side of Smith's desk and let out a heavy sigh, feeling incredibly worried. "I'm sorry, Martha. That comment wasn't called for." She apologises to her friend, who pauses in her searching and glances over at Katy questioningly. "It's just … I wish the situation was simpler. That we weren't being hunted down by the Family, and the Doctor was free to live a life untainted by the responsibilities of maintaining order in time and space."

"Why do you think that?" Martha asked.

"The Doctor and I are virtually orphans from a destroyed planet; homeless and searching for meaning in a confusing existence. Choosing to live as human, while it has its flaws, bares no burdens to speak of. I just think it would be cruel to make him choose. He seems so happy…" Katy despaired.

"Yeah, but Katy… you know that this wasn't supposed to last forever. We both knew that he was going to have to eventually become the Doctor again." Martha reasoned. "Are you basing this off your own feelings because you've been hidden away for so long yourself?"

"I don't know. Maybe." Katy hesitated. "I grew up for a second time, without the knowledge that I was a Time Lady, and I had a happy childhood with a loving mother and sister, and I was privileged with a wonderful life. But, I do admit that part of me believed something was missing or just out of reach…" She pauses, swallowing hard. "I don't want to be a hypocrite and make him do something I cannot do at present myself."

"The world needs the Doctor, Katy. We do too. We can't do this alone, and we can't let those aliens get him. You know what will happen if we fail to get him back. I sympathise with you, but this is just the way it's gotta be." Martha was firm.

Tears started gathering in Katy's eyes.

"It's not fair…" She whispered before retreating back out the door. Martha went to follow her, but stopped herself, realising that she couldn't really understand what Katy was going through.

Corridor

Katy wondered aimlessly through the corridors, amid the chaos of all the planning and organising. She pauses when she sees Smith supervising a couple of students nearby, and debates whether she should retreat and avoid seeing him for the moment or put on a brave face and let the chips fall where they may. Her decision was made for her when Smith spots her and makes his way over, whilst still giving instructions.

"You're with Armitage and Thwaites," Smith tells one boy, authoritatively. "They know the drill." He grabs Katy by the hand and pulls her out of the way of the students darting around, attending to their duties. "Katy, it's not safe." Smith warns her, and Katy nods at him, trying to hide the fact that she was crying.

"I know. I'm trying to stay out of people's way. I'm just feeling a bit overwhelmed…" She stammers and Smith pulls her over to the window to allow her to get some fresh air and to calm down a little.

"Shh! Everything is going to be alright, Katy. I won't let anything harm you." Smith promises and Katy smiles at him, appreciatively.

"Fine evening we've had together, right?" Katy muses, a little dejectedly.

"Not quite as planned…" Smith agreed, just as disappointed. Katy studies him and realises that as much as she doesn't want to, she needed to figure out a way to convince Smith that opening the watch (when they eventually found the bloody thing…) was the right thing, and the smart thing to do.

"Tell me more about Nottingham." Katy asks randomly, and Smith is surprised by the topic choice.

"Sorry?"

"That was where you were brought up, wasn't it? Tell me about it, please." Katy coaxes him, and Smith frowned.

"Well, it lies on the River Leen, its southern boundary following the course of the River Trent which flows from Stoke to the Humber." Smith responded, robotically. Katy grimaced.

"You sound like an encyclopedia," Katy observed. "Where did you live?"

"Broadmoor Street," Smith answered automatically. "Adjacent to Hotley Terrace in the district of Radford Parade." More tears welled up in Katy's eyes when she realises that her beloved Smith's answers were just implants placed in there by the Tardis to help him blend in.

"But more than facts. When you were a child, where did you play? All those secret little places, the dens and hideaways that only a child knows? Tell me, John. Please tell me." Katy begged, and Smith realises exactly what she was doing and looked hurt about what she was implying.

"How can you think that I'm not real?" He demanded, hurt. "When I kissed you, was that a lie?"

"No, I can honestly say that it was genuine and very sincere." Katy agreed.

"But this Doctor sounds like some, some romantic lost prince." Smith scoffed, defensively. "Would you rather that? Am I not enough?" He questioned Katy, who makes a face at the assumption.

"He's hardly a prince. But I can definitely confirm that he's lost." Katy cups her cheek with her hand, tenderly. "And believe me, John, Doctor or not; you are enough. You will always be enough for me." She promises him. Smith takes her hand from his cheek and holds it in his momentarily, stroking it with his thumb.

"I've got to go."

"But Martha was right about one thing," Katy stops him, drawing his attention. "These boys, they're still children. John Smith wouldn't want them to fight, never mind the Doctor." She tells him, sternly. "The John Smith I got to know, he knows it's wrong, doesn't he?"

"Mister Smith, if you please!" Rocastle yells down the corridor at Smith, who looks hesitantly over Katy's shoulder at him and back at her.

"What choice do I have?" Smith stated, before leaning in and kissing her.

Courtyard

Latimer was helping Hutchinson and the other students sandbag the courtyard as they constructed barricades for the cadets to shelter behind during the shootout that would be commencing soon. As usual, Hutchinson was giving Latimer a hard time.

"Get those bags piled up, filth. Going to mean the difference between life and death for us." Hutchinson states, and Latimer scoffs in disagreement.

"Not for you and me."

"What are you babbling about?" Hutchinson snaps at him, frowning. Latimer pauses to look over his shoulder at him.

"We're going to battle together." He explains as he thinks back to the vision he had seen of the future, where they were traversing across ruined landscaping and narrowly avoiding shells screaming overhead. "We fight alongside. I've seen it. Not here, not now."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Hutchinson frowns, looking puzzled.

"It means you and I both survive this. And maybe, just maybe I was given this watch so I could help." He shows Hutchinson the Doctor's fob watch, before realising he was needed elsewhere, instead of fighting a pointless battle. "I'm sorry…" Latimer gets to his feet and runs away, much to Hutchinson's confusion and disgust.

"Latimer, you filthy coward!" He sneers at him.

"Oh yes, sir. Every time!" Latimer retorts, unfazed by the derogatory sneer at his retreating back.

Farringham School

In Smith's study, Martha gives up searching for the fob watch and shouts in frustration as she throws a handful of unmarked papers into the air before leaving. Meanwhile, Latimer is hiding once again, talking desperately to the fob watch for advice.

"What do I do? What do I do? What do I do?" He begs, frantically.

'…Beware…' the voices warn him, and Latimer looks confused.

"Beware? Of what?"

'…Her…'

Latimer looks around for the girl the watch is referring to and spots Lucy standing in the corridor, holding her balloon and looking right at him. She sniffs deeply, and Latimer freezes.

"Keep away," He states, firmly. However, Lucy doesn't heed his warning and instead interrogates him.

"Who are you?"

"I saw you at the dance. You were with that family. You're one of them." Latimer realises.

"What are you hiding?" Lucy demanded.

"Nothing," Latimer replied, discreetly hiding the watch in his pocket. However, Lucy is not fooled and her eyes narrow.

"What have you got there?" Lucy insists.

"Nothing," Latimer insists, getting annoyed.

"Show me, little boy!" Lucy demands aggressively. Latimer gets up from his hiding spot and stands defiantly in front of Lucy.

"I reckon whatever you are, you're still in the shape of a girl." Latimer theorises. "How strong is she, do you think? Does she really want to see this?" He opens the watch, aiming it directly towards Lucy, and the golden energy shows her an explosion, and the Doctor himself.

Frightened, Lucy retreats.

Outside the school

The moment the fob watch containing the Doctor's essence is opened, Jenny and Baines were able to sense it.

"Time Lord…" Baines mutters, relieved that they had finally found their bounty.

"Inside the device," Jenny confirms.

"Everything he is concealed in the hands of a schoolboy." Baines smirks, triumphantly. "But now we know, that's all we need to find. The boy and the watch. What are we waiting for?" He turns towards the scarecrows and gives the order. "Attack!" The army of scarecrows moves forward.

Courtyard

The scarecrows start hammering at the front gate, alerting Rocastle and the cadets to their presence.

"Stand to!" Rocastle commands to the group of scared but determined group of teenage boys. "At post!" Everyone takes aim.

"Enemy approaching, sir." One of the boys reports in, and Rocastle nodded.

"Steady. Find the biting point." He instructs as the scarecrows finally manage to break into the courtyard. "Fire!" Rocastle yells, and the boys open fire, taking down scarecrows as they advance.

Smith raises his gun with the intention of joining in. However, he hesitates and looks around at the carnage and decides at the last minute not to pull the trigger; an unfamiliar instinct convincing him not to fire, and he was horrified by what he was seeing. Eventually, all the scarecrows have been gunned down by the students.

"Cease fire!" Rocastle gives the order, and the boys stand down. He abandons the barricade and walks over to inspect the scarecrows. He is bewildered by what he discovers in the remains of the scarecrows. "They're straw. Like he said, straw…"

"Then no one's dead, sir? We killed no one?" Hutchinson asks, looking a combination of confused and relieved. They all freeze when they hear the sound of footsteps on gravel.

"Stand to!" Rocastle gives the order, and spins round to see who is coming. Only to pause when he sees that it's only Lucy and her balloon. She smiles innocently at Rocastle, who beckons towards her; unaware of the danger she possesses. "You, child. Come out of the way. Come into the school." Rocastle urges her. "You don't know who's out there." He insists, before taking a closer observation of Lucy. "It's the Cartwright girl, isn't it? Come here. Come to me." He reassures her.

Martha runs out of the school and attempts to stop him.

"Mister Rocastle! Please, don't go near her." She urges him, frantically. However, Rocastle once again dismisses her, looking annoyed.

"You were told to be quiet." He snaps at her. Martha looks back at Katy with obvious frustration before turning back to Rocastle.

"Please, just listen to me. She's part of it!" She turns towards Katy. "Miss Tyler, tell him."

"I think you should stay back, Headmaster." Katy agrees with Martha, having recognised Lucy from the Village Hall during the interrupted dance.

"Mister Smith?" Martha looks at him, and Smith backs her up.

"She was, she was with, with Baines in the Village." He confirms, and Rocastle merely scoffs at them, disbelievingly.

"Mister Smith, I've seen many strange sights this night, but there is no cause on God's Earth that would allow me to see this child in the field of battle, sir." He turns back to Lucy and smiles reassuringly at her. "Come with me."

"You're funny," Lucy smirks at him. Rocastle looks a bit bemused by Lucy's comment but persists with his attempts to persuade Lucy to come to him for protection.

"That's right. Now take my hand." He requests.

"So funny." Lucy states before producing her ray gun and vaporising Rocastle, much to the shock and horror of everybody else. Lucy's eyes were wild and threatening. "Now who's going to shoot me. Any of you, really?" She taunts them, and Smith finally decides that enough was enough.

"Put down your guns."

"But sir, the Headmaster…" Hutchinson protests. However, Smith is adamant and repeats his order.

"I'll not see this happen. Not anymore." He glowers at the boys. "You will retreat in an orderly fashion back through the school." Smith stares directly at Hutchinson. "Hutchinson, lead the way!"

"But sir…"

"I said, lead the way!" Smith repeats the order, firmly. Baines smirks at their retreating backs.

"Well, go on, then. Run!" He taunts them, firing his gun into the air. Martha hurds everyone within her reach towards the doors of the boarding school.

"Come on!" She yells, frantically.

"Reanimate!" Baines orders the fallen scarecrows, who immediately put themselves together like crude jigsaw puzzles and advance upon the school and the students contained within the walls.

Stable Block

The boys scatter through the buildings, followed by the reanimated scarecrows. Latimer retreats further upstairs, knowing that he was now a direct target for the Family because of the fob watch he is attempting to keep hidden and safe from them. Smith, Katy, and Martha were attempting to evacuate as many of the boys as possible.

"Let's go. Quick as you can!" Smith urges.

"Don't go to the village. It's not safe!" Martha states. Smith turns towards both Katy and Martha, with a look of fierce determination on his face.

"And you, Ladies."

"Not until we've got all the boys out." Katy stubbornly refuses.

Farringham School

Unfortunately, not all the boys were lucky to escape the Family, as the scarecrows have managed to round them up to be inspected for the elusive fob watch they were searching frantically for.

"One of these boys has got the watch." Jenny states before shoving one towards Lucy, who eyes him with a blank expression on her face. "This one?"

"No," Lucy rejects almost immediately.

"This one?" Baines shoves another boy at her.

"No," Lucy responds yet again.

"This one?" Jenny asks, holding another boy by his collar.

"No," Lucy once again rejects. Baines has Hutchinson by the collar and drags him to stand in front of Lucy. He fights him the entire time.

"Get off me. I said get off me!" Hutchinson protests. But he is ignored.

"Ah! This one, is that him?" Baines asks Lucy, who takes a large sniff of a horrified Hutchinson before shaking her head.

"No." She says. Both Baines and Jenny look incredibly frustrated and decide to turn their frustrations on the frightened boys.

"Right. Then we can kill this lot." Jenny declares, causing several of the boys to flinch away. But in the dormitory right above them, Latimer opens the watch.

'… Lord of Time …' the Doctor's voice whispers ominously, alerting the three of them to his location.

"That's it!" Baines shouts.

"Upstairs!" Jenny yells and takes off towards the nearest staircase, while Hutchinson takes advantage of their distraction and begins shoving his classmates towards the nearest exit.

"Don't just stand there. Outside. Come on, out!" He hastens them before following suit.

A/N: Stay tuned for part two!
