Trevor was standing in front of Born Free, still wondering if what he was about to do was a good idea or not. He really wanted to have answers to his questions and he knew Lip was the person to ask. But he wasn't sure he wanted to hear them as he was scared of what Lip might have to say. But the truth was, if he wanted to know once and for all if his relationship with Ian had some kind of future at all, he needed to do this. So he took a deep breath and opened the front door.
"Hey Lip.", said Trevor, entering the shop.
Lip turned around, and took a double glance. Saying he was surprised to see Trevor here would be an understatement. He might have dated Ian for a few months, but they hadn't really interacted much before.
"Yo Trevor, what's up?"
"I wanted to ask you something. About Ian."
"Yes, he likes peanut butter that much. Fucking crazy, if you ask me."
"It's about Mickey."
Lip stared at him for a few beats, then stood up, leaving his tools on the floor.
"Yo Brad, I'll be back in five." He told his boss. "Come with me." He then said to Trevor.
Trevor followed him outside.
Lip took out his pack of smokes, lit one and brought it to his mouth.
"So what do you wanna know about Mickey?"
"You know about Mexico, right?
Lip nodded. That didn't surprise Trevor, he knew him and Ian were pretty close and told each other everything.
"After that detective came to your house looking for Mickey, Ian had promised me he wouldn't get involved with him, then the next thing I know, he's dodging my call for three days. Then he came to see me at the youth shelter and when I asked him where he was, he told me he was with Mickey."
"Yeah I know all about it. So what's up with that?"
"Well Ian's been trying to win me back. And, well, I guess I was just wondering if I should let him."
"You want me to decide for you if you should forgive my brother or not? That's kinda not my place, don't you think?"
Trevor sighed.
"I guess I just thought that maybe you could tell me more about their relationship. It might help me understand why Ian cheated on me."
It was Lip's turn to sigh.
"Ian cheated on you because it was Mickey, that's all. Look, I know I should tell you to take my brother back. But between you and Mickey? He'll always choose Mickey. Hell, he'll choose Mickey fucking Milkovich over fucking anyone."
"Yeah, but it won't happen again, right? I mean, Mickey's in Mexico, he can never come back here, he has the Feds looking for him."
Lip scoffed.
"If you think the Feds will prevent Mickey from seeing my brother you're dumber than I thought."
Seeing Trevor's puzzled look, Lip continued his explanation.
"Mickey got thrown in jail in the first place only because someone had fucked with Ian. He escaped from prison just because he was missing Ian. Hell, he fucking came out at The Alibi during his son's christening in front of everyone, including his own wife and homophobic nazi father, for Ian. There's no way in hell the fucking Feds will stop Mickey from coming back here for Ian if he wants to. And believe me, he will want to."
"You're sure about that?"
"I give him a few months at best before his ass is back here. If you decide you want Ian back, just know it won't last. You can't compete against Mickey. No offence, no one can."
Trevor wasn't sure how to respond.
"You said Mickey had a wife? And a son? What's up with that?" he ended up saying.
" Well, alleged son. I'm pretty sure no paternity test was involved. And a wife, yeah. But it's kinda fucked up and complicated and not my story to tell. Let's just say they didn't marry out of love."
Trevor nodded.
"Anyway man, I really need to go back to work. I'll see you around?"
"Yeah, thanks man."
Lip went back inside and Trevor left, his head full of new information he needed to sort through.
Trevor ended up having sex with Ian once more. He didn't believe Mickey could come back here and despite Lip's warning he was well on his way to completely forgive Ian for what had happened with his ex. But things turned to shit with the redhead's mental health and their relationship was put on the back burner. Then, Ian had turned into a cult leader for LGBTQ youth and was ultimately sent to prison.
That's why Trevor was sitting at a table in the visiting area of the facilities, waiting for the guards to bring Ian in. The redhead had been incarcerated a few weeks prior and Trevor only now found the courage to come and visit him. They hadn't talked since the whole Gay Jesus fiasco months before and the last time they had spoken, they hadn't parted ways on good terms. Well on Trevor's part anyway. Ian was too far gone in his mania to realize what was going on.
The gate opened, and Ian and other prisoners came through. He spotted Trevor from afar and walked where he was seated.
"Hey Trevor, what are you doing here? I wasn't expecting you to visit."
His tone was friendly, but his smile was clearly forced. He clearly wanted this visit to be over with, but he was too nice to say it. Typical Ian.
"Hey. I know things are kinda weird between us, but I just wanted to come over here and see how you were doing. So how are you Ian? How's prison treating you?"
"Prison's treating me fine, more than fine actually."
A genuine smile escaped his lips. He tried to hide it before Trevor noticed it, but it was too late.
"What with the smile? What do you mean by 'more than fine'?"
Trevor could clearly see Ian hesitated before answering, like what he was about to say made him uncomfortable.
"Well, hum. Mickey's here."
Ian's revelation surprised him.
"What the fuck? How did he manage to do that?"
"When he, well when he was dealing in Mexico, he met some tourist wearing a tee with my face on it. That's how he learned about the whole Gay Jesus fiasco and that I was going to prison. So he made a deal with the Feds. He rolled on the cartel he was working for and in exchange they let him choose where he was locked up."
That surprised him even more.
"Wait, he got locked up for you? He gave up his freedom for you?"
Ian nodded, his whole face lighted up with love and wonder.
"Wow, that's just, wow."
Trevor finally understood what Lip had wanted to tell him a few months ago. Part of him had hoped that maybe, once Ian would be out, they could have tried to fix what remained of the relationship. After all, Trevor really appreciated him when he was himself, when he was on his meds. But now, he understood Ian was never his to begin with. It was time for him to let Ian go.
They talked for a few more minutes, until one of the guards told them time was up. They both stood up at the same time, facing each other, not really sure what to say. They both know it was most likely the last time they would see each other. Well on purpose anyway.
"Take care Ian."
Ian nodded, a small smile on his lips.
"You too, Trevor."
And that was it.
