Chapter 9: Forbidden Friendships

Later, Hiccup, Hicca and Styrkarssons returned to the cove, hoping that seeing the Furies would help Hiccup feel better after what happened in the arena. He tossed out a fish, remembering the Night Fury was trying to catch a fish earlier. But there wasn't any sign of any of the Furies. Hiccup tried to enter the cove, but the shield he brought got wedged in between a couple of boulders and couldn't get it free. After crawling under, he decided to leave the shield. Hicca and the Styrkarssons followed as Hiccup picked up the fish. "Hiccup, you sense anything?" Hylli asked. "As a matter of fact…" Hiccup started to say as the Furies spied on them from on top a few rocks. "…I do." He said, sensing the Dragons' curious emotions. He turned towards them as they crawled down the rocks. They were shocked and curious that at how he was able to sense them.

Hiccup held out the fish for the Night Fury, whose mouth watered from the smell of it. But then, he and the other Furies became hostile after sensing something on Hiccup's group. Hiccup opened his vest, revealing his knife. He realized that the Furies were hostile because of their weapons. "Okay. We're not gonna hurt you. With your permission, we're gonna slowly remove our weapons." He said. The Night Fury stared for a moment before nodding his head. "Okay, everyone, slowly pull out your weapons and put them down." Hiccup said. He, Hicca and the Styrkarssons slowly pulled out their weapons and dropped them to the ground. "Where do you want them?" Hiccup asked. The Night Fury motioned his head to the water. Hiccup picked up his knife with his foot and tossed it into the pond. Hicca did the same with her knife while the Styrkarssons picked their weapons up with their hands and threw them into the pond. As that happened, the demeanors of the Furies changed. "Hehe. That was kinda cute." Hicca said.

Hiccup held out the fish. "I sensed you were hungry yesterday and I thought you might like this." He said. The Night Fury slowly approached Hiccup, slowly opening his mouth and showing something interesting. "Huh, toothless. I could've sworn you had…" Hiccup started to say until suddenly, teeth appeared as the Night Fury chomped onto the fish, startling the group. The Night Fury ripped the fish into pieces before eating it, licking his chops. "…teeth." Hiccup said in shock. Hicca and the Styrkarssons were also shocked. Just then, the Night Fury started sniffing and walking towards Hiccup. "Uh, uh…" Hiccup backed up, but fell on his butt. Hicca and the Styrkarssons tried to help, but the other Furies came up and started sniffing them too. "No, no, no." Hiccup said as they backed up against a rock with nowhere to go. The Furies stared directly at them. "We don't have anymore." Hiccup said. Suddenly, the Night Fury started making a strange noise in his stomach. And then, he made a noise with his throat and regurgitated the fish tail into Hiccup's lap. "Ew!" Hiccup groaned in disgust. "Oh, that's just disgusting." Hicca said, shivering in disgust. The Furies sat up on their hind legs and sat down on them as they and the young Vikings stared at each other. Hiccup felt unsure at what these Dragons wanted. The Night Fury looked at the fish. Hiccup did the same as he realized. He sighed and reluctantly brought the fish to his mouth. "Oh, Gods. Please, no." Hicca whispered in disgust. Hiccup took a bite, pretending it tasted good. Hicca and the Styrkarssons felt sick to their stomachs. Even Hylli felt like throwing up. The Night Fury's flaps popped up at the sound Hiccup made. Hiccup made the same sound while holding the fish out, hoping the Furies would finish it. But then, the Night Fury swallowed. Hiccup looked at the Dragon with disbelief. Holding back his gag reflex as best as he could, he swallowed the piece of fish with all his might, shuddering from the taste. "Oh, I'm gonna throw up." Hicca said, feeling sick to her stomach. The Night Fury licked his lips. Hiccup looked at him and smiled. The Furies squinted their eyes as they saw the smile. Just then, the Night Fury started parting his lips, making a sort of smile himself. "Hehe. That's kinda cute." Hicca said. Even the other Furies were amused.

As Hiccup set the fish aside and slowly stood up, he reached out his hand to touch the Night Fury's nose. But the Night Fury grew hostile again, baring his teeth before flying across the lake. But being unable to fly, he landed on the other side. "Did I do something wrong?" Hiccup asked. The Light Fury just garbled before looking at her mate. The Night Fury flared up the ground around he before laying down. He looked up and saw a bird leaving its nest. How he longed to fly again. Just then, who should he notice sitting near him, but Hiccup, Hicca and the Styrkarssons. Hiccup gave a small wave, having sensed the Night Fury's emotion for longing to fly. But the Night Fury groaned, shifted his body and wrapped his tail around himself so they couldn't see his face. "Kinda shy, isn't it?" Blóm asked. Hiccup scooted closer, seeing the chance to examine the tail. But as he reached for it, the Night Fury lifted it up to look at him, causing him to casually walk away. The Dragon walked away too. Hicca, the Styrkarssons and the other Furies stared at each other curiously before each going to follow their respective leaders.

Later, as the sun started to set, the Furies were hanging from a tree by their tails, sleeping. Just then, as the Night Fury woke up, he noticed Hiccup, Hicca and the Styrkarssons sitting on a rock nearby. Hiccup was drawing in the dirt. As he drew, the lines started to form into a Dragon. Just then, he sensed the presences of the Furies looking over him, Hicca and the Styrkarssons. They looked as Hiccup drew the Night Fury, filling in the eyes. "Curious? It's one of my different talents. Drawing kinda helps me relax and focus." Hiccup explained. The Night Fury purred at the drawing before he suddenly stood up on his hind legs and walked off. "Huh? Where's he going?" Hicca asked. Just then, they heard a branch snap. They looked and saw that the Night Fury had ripped off a tree branch and began drawing a pattern of his own in the dirt, giving Hiccup, Hicca and the Styrkarssons a smile. The other Furies backed away as they watched their friend work. As he finished, he dropped the branch and admired his work. Hiccup, Hicca and the Styrkarssons stood up and looked at the odd scribble that the Night Fury made. As they looked around, Hiccup stepped on one of the lines, causing the Night Fury to growl at him. Startled, Hiccup took his foot off and the Night Fury started purring. Hiccup, sensing a pattern, stepped on and off the line, earning each a hostile growl and a docile purr. Hiccup stepped over the line, smiling as he knew what the game was. Hicca and the Styrkarssons quickly caught on as they followed Hiccup, being careful while stepping over the lines.

As Hiccup successfully stepped around the drawing, he stopped as he sensed the Night Fury behind him, breathing on his hair. He turned around to see the Dragon staring right down at him. Hicca, the Styrkarssons and the other Furies joined them. Hiccup reached out to touch the Night Fury, but he twitched his eye and growled as he got close. Hiccup pulled back, sensing that he still didn't trust him. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes, looked away and held out his arm, inches away from the Night Fury. Hicca and the Styrkarssons looked at each other before they decided to do the same thing. They closed their eyes, looked away and followed Hiccup's movements. They figured if the Dragons trusted them, they would come to their hands. The Furies looked at the hands. A few seconds later, the Furies placed their snouts against the hands. The Viking teens let out their breaths as they turned to look at the Dragons. The other Furies purred at the feel of Hicca and the Styrkarssons' hands. But as the Night Fury pulled back from Hiccup's hand, he snorted. "Why did I just do that?" A male voice asked. "Well, maybe you were just as curious as I was." Hiccup said. Suddenly, their eyes widened as they looked at each other in shock. Even Hicca, the Styrkarssons and the other Furies looked at them in shock "Did you just talk?" Hiccup asked. "Did you just understand me?" The Night Fury asked. Unable to take anymore shock, Hiccup fainted. "Hiccup!" Hicca cried as she and the Styrkarssons rushed to Hiccup's side. The Furies gathered around as they inspected Hiccup's unconscious body.

Well, how was that? Hiccup, Hicca and the Styrkarssons returned to the cove and started getting the attention of the Furies.
