As a man of modern history, it always felt weird to me how easily the Chinese in Fallout would swerve away from communism and applied a more ethereal archaic view of society.
The Shi had been a little civilization I had kept silent about for a while. Not much because I feared them or forgot about them, but because they were harmless and... I was waiting for the old relics of the PRC to die. The survivors of the Shih-huang-ti submarine had outlasted the radiation, and while some did perish between cancer and ghoulification, some of the tougher bastards persisted through the few decades of peace I granted them.
The new generation, by the choice of the old guard, was not indoctrinated in the ways of Communism. Rather, a more feudal-like society was enforced, with the 'Shi Emperor' put in charge of all. The truth behind such society was akin to the history of Old China - a fake figurehead as the Emperor, and lots of 'Eunuchs' to handle most of the affairs.
In this case, the Emperor was a supercomputer which would provide to the 'Advisors' with the best viable option to rule over the Shi. Or, at least, that's how it worked in Canon. Cracking an AI, even one as impressive as a Chinese Supercomputer, was a piece of cake for me, and I had been tinkering over their growth for a while. Small corrections just so that a Cult of Personality couldn't form and so that legitimacy of the 'Eunuchs' could be handled accordingly when the time was ripe.
It was 2105 when I decided it was high time to do something about it. It was actually Lydia's idea when she asked if I knew any other civilization in California. I mentioned the classic small-time thingies here and there that weren't bound to last for long, I brought up Huobologists (and how much I loathed these frauds), and then I brought up the Shi.
The moment I brought up the Chinese having a settlement in the US' soil, she instantly demanded to see what it was all about. She didn't jump the gun or anything, but she expected red flags bearing the five stars all over San Francisco. What she found was quite 'disappointing'.
The current Shi society was small and quite authoritarian. It was technocratic in nature as the submarine held several scientists and the lack of a solid military backbone created quite a situation - a forceful population policy caused quite the growth in their settlement, and it would be shocking to say that there were five times the citizens compared to the previous workers in that Submarine under their banner in the span of a few decades.
The curve was bound to grow, but the issue lingered with Lydia stressing out that it was best to do the 'right thing' and bring 'America' to those people.
"Which means?"
"Destroy the tyrants, give them the truth."
...
"Which means?"
She gave me a lengthy stare at that, and her response mellowed me. "Help them."
I guess she raised a point. And I may have been wary she was going full Enclave once more considering her reaction to Chinese people in America. Still, I drafted plans to finally get this little travesty out of the way since I really hated Hubology more and I wanted that hack's cult dealt with ASAP.
Sending the Securitrons from Shady Sands was an easy feat, getting the whole setup done right was actually the worst bit. Especially when I had to kill a lot of 'respectable figures' in their community.
Poison, electric pulses to the brain, bullets and other horrible ways came to claim the lives of those old morons. By the time the first announcements came through that their leaders were dying like flies, the entire settlement was panicking. The security had no clue on what to do as even their own boss had died, and all the while a large continent of Securitrons made it to their camps.
Everyone was rallied, everyone was shitting their pants but-
"So, funny story, your God-Emperor is a computer, and I am the guy that put in its system a few orders such as the fact you have to study English in school- hello people of Shi, I am Robert House and I am now your boss!"
...
"W-What did you do to the Emperor?" One of the toughish-looking guards loudly asked.
"What did I do to the Supercomputer? It is fine, just put to rest for a moment, but I can do a few tricks to prove myself. Like... this."
Their handheld devices buzzed as they got notified that 'Mr. House is now your new boss'.
"You just hacked the systems and-"
"Order Epsilon Gamma Gamma."
The guy paused, his eyes bulging with how wide they were. After all, I just repeated a code that was so 'important' that it should not be in any computer.
"H-How?!"
"I made these codes. I made some of your traditions. And... I guess I shall make you a proper civilization- part of New America and all of that. To put it bluntly, I let the old fools from China play God over the Shi and tire themselves up. Now? Let me uplift you properly."
Was it clean? No. Was it a success like with Shady Sands? Definitely no, but we were going to get there in due time. Did it fix the little fight I had with Lydia? Not really.
Here I was, in the couch with Rascal for the night, as I had just given sharing bed permission to Lydia and she instantly became my wife.
...
Actually, is that literally how she viewed this? Us married? Is that why she felt so moody at times when I was so secretive about my stuff? I mean, I made my point clear that it wasn't about trust and more about 'me not wanting her to be bothered by this sort of stuff'. Then again we had gone through a few dates and I have to also admit that we had been quite intimate for a solid year now... and without protections.
...
Wait a second!
Rascal chirped in shock as she got propelled into the air for a moment before landing on the couch, giving chase to me as I marched up to my bedroom and I knocked there-
"Robert, I didn't forgive you-"
"I-I think I know why you have been feeling unwell as of recently. And the mood- how did I miss that!"
I heard her huff, then march at the door as she opened up with an annoyed but curious look. "Which is... oh?"
She saw me waving a certain test stick and frowned. "You mean that-"
"It's possible," I argued calmly, keeping Rascal from jumping to bite at the pregnancy test. "You've been sick for a while now, and we have ruled out several illnesses. Same for your strange mood swings-"
"I am still angry at you!" The blonde snarled, then paused and sighed. "But I guess I feel a bit more angrier than usual."
She snatched the thing from my hands, closed the door and then... silence. I turned to Rascal, and Rascal tilted her head quizzically to the side.
"Mama fine?"
"Mama is fine," I nodded with a smile. That seemed enough to relieve the Deathclaw and-
Then Lydia came rushing back, opened the door and pulled me a hug by lifting me off the ground.
"We're going to have a baby!"
Oh, that explains a lot...
And fuck, I am going to be a dad. Again.
AN
House's getting a kid (again)! And Rascal's getting a sibling!
