"Now just hear me out: What if me and Kevin never broke up?"

This is what Nazz had told her college roommate just a weeks before winter break.

Throughout her college life Nazz found herself dating a young man by the name of Tristan Coates. He was nice enough. He wanted to be a psychiatrist. Nazz found that admirable.

Things had been hot between them at first. But recently they had become chilly. And Nazz had a way of dealing with problematic relationships by considering the ones that had come before. She usually thought of Kevin because they were still so close and what other ex could she say that about?

Her roommate gave her advice best she could but Nazz had already made up her mind. She was going to try things out with Kevin again.

And what a better time than her families annual Christmas party?

Kevin had told her that he'd planned to be at her parents' party. The night in question Nazz had been the one to greet him and had practically stayed by his side the whole night. They'd had a good time and as always it was like nothing between them had ever changed. However, Nazz noticed that Kevin was knocking the drinks back a little fast and while she had a good buzz going herself, she wanted them both to be in the right state of mind for when she invited him to her room. So, while they had been sitting on the couch in the living room laughing at one thing or another she'd leaned over and as seductively as possible told him to meet her in her room in 5 minutes.

Kevin perhaps had been anticipating this because he looked to her with an accepting grin. She walked off through the throngs of Christmas partiers towards her room shooting him one last meaningful smile as she went.

After that everything had gone just the way she'd planned.

Until she'd turned on the lights to find out that the person that she had been heavily making out with hadn't been Kevin at all. It'd been…Rolf!?

Which leads us to here and now. Just a few days after the incident in question.

Nazz wore black military styled boots with baggy jean pants and a form fitting red shirt with a picture of a tasty looking steak on it.

The kitchen which had only three days ago been filled with so many Christmas sweets and foods of all kind was now filled with meat. And only meat. It smelled enticing but Nazz always thought it was strange that Rolf's holiday never came with any side dishes.

Rolf and his mother and father were due any second. Because they did not celebrate Christmas Christine would invite them to dinner to celebrate their holiday instead. Something about dressing up as meat and eating said meat…however Rolfs parents seemed to realize that even though they had good intentions the wearing of the meat was something that Nazz's family couldn't really do. So, to compromise they simply wore clothes with pictures of meat on them.

Nazz was helping her mom set the table feeling extremely nervous since this was the first time she would be seeing Rolf since the incident. When the doorbell rang the younger girl jumped a mile and shattered a dish.

"My goodness!" Christine cried, "What is going on with you today wild child?"

"Mom, I'm so totally-"

"Don't worry about it. I've got it. Just go let them in."

Nazz paled, "Maybe dads got it."

"He's still upstairs getting ready. Now hurry on Nazz. I don't want them waiting too long! It's cold outside."

"Alright, alright." Nazz said defeatedly.

She walked to the door took a deep breath with a mantra in her head, 'Everything is normal. Everything is normal. Everything is normal.' And swung open the door with the best smile she could muster.

"Hey everyone!"

"Happy holiday Nazz!" Rolf's mom and dad greeted happily.

Rolf's father was a huge broad man and if not for the handlebars mustache he wore Nazz might have been intimidated by him. But instead, it made him more inviting he also had kind brown eyes and a big smile which helped as well. Rolf's mom was tall and every bit a woman in the traditional sense she was poised and elegant and extremely beautiful. They both were dressed in head wraps and robes as was customary from their homeland but over that they wore t-shirts with pictures of meat.

Rolf's mom's shirt said 'I'm a little' followed by a picture of a lambchop.

Rolf's dad's shirt read 'I'm the whole sausage fest!' with pictures of sausages covering the entirety of the shirt.

"Whoa cool shirts!" Said Nazz, "Mrs. Pertti yours is so cute! And Mr. Mustof, very bold choice."

"We got them from the Walmart!" Said Mustof with a little bit too much excitement.

Nazz grinned, "I like them!"

Her gaze then traveled to the young man in the family because after all it was inevitable.

Rolf stood wearing simple jean pants, a green jacket left open to reveal his shirt that pictured full cooked turkey. She found he was watching her carefully.

Here's a little bit of side information: Whenever Nazz was insanely nervous she giggled.

Her giggling was so sudden the three family members before her jumped in surprise.

"H-hey Rolf."

Rolf furrowed his brows watching her warily, "Good day Nazz girl."

This caused Nazz to chuckle nervously. This time Mustof laughed with her, "Ah I get it!"

Pertti gave him a dull side glare, "No you don't dear. I'm sure there is an inside joke between Rolf and Nazz."

Nazz suddenly cried out, "There's nothing between Rolf and me!"

As the family gave Nazz confused looks the young woman was saved by her mother and father.

"Pertti and Mustof! So good to see you!" said Christine.

Mustof happily greeted back, "You too Christine! Nice to see you again Markus!"

Nazz's father was a handsome man though his hair was beginning to thin at the top. He wore glasses and very soft spoken compared to his wife and daughter, "You too Mustof. Hello, Pertti."

"Hello, Markus. Thank you both for once again inviting us to your lovely home."

"It is our pleasure."

Because Nazz's family were fully prepared to celebrate Rolf's family traditions they greeted them as was customary in their country.

The woman of the household would clasp their hands politely before them and bow to each other. The men of the house would keep one arm to their side while placing one hand over their heart as a sign of respect and bow to each other thusly.

Nazz held her hands as Rolf placed his hand over his heart. They both looked to each other. And bowed.

They held each other's gazes.

Nazz wondered about the other night in her room. Had she really made out with the man before her? She thought about what she had said to him.

How she had touched him.

Her legs had been wrapped around him.

He had hoisted her against the door.

They had practically dry humped each other.

His hand had been up her shirt.

They had almost…

Nazz and Rolf both straightened from their bow. Both their faces were flaming red. They finally broke eye contact.

Dinner had been no better. It's difficult to pretend the person you're sitting next to doesn't exist.

Their parents did most of the talking. Loud excited talk from Mustof and Christine and polite inquiries from Pertti and Markus. The dinner table definitely wasn't quiet. Except for the younger members of the family.

Nazz took small bites of her ham with a side of turkey and ground beef. She wracked her brain for something anything to say to the farmer next to her. But she couldn't bring up the incident, could she? It would definitely be inappropriate here. But if she talked about something else would that seem like she was ignoring the issue? She didn't want to act like the matter was trivial because it definitely wasn't! What if she asked to talk to Rolf alone? How would she get him alone? Would he want to be alone with her? Would everyone else think that was weird?

Pertti called, "Nazz?"

The blonde jumped, "Everything is fine!"

The dark skinned woman tilted her head slightly, "Oh? Well, I wanted to know how your studies were going? Are you enjoying University?"

Both families were looking at Nazz. With the exception of Rolf who took a drink from his cup.

The young woman giggled nervously, "Yeah. Yeah, it's really cool! The work is tough but I'm getting the hang of it. And the people there are really nice sooo…yeah."

Christine said, "Brains and beauty. I don't know where she gets it from." Then in a playful conspirator whisper added, "Oh wait yes I do!"

The adults laughed at this and Pertti said to Nazz,

"How nice. You know that's always been something I've wanted to do." Her dark gaze slide to Rolf, "Maybe someday my son will follow in your footsteps and can live out his mother's dream."

"Rolf is doing just fine without university mother. Thank you." Said the young man as he cut up a steak with a knife and fork.

Mustof said, "Darling not this again. Leave the boy be if he doesn't want school then he doesn't need it. He'll have all the work he could ever handle taking over the family business. Right boy?"

Still chewing on his steak Rolf only nodded with a sound of approval.

"Well," Spoke Pertti proudly, "Rolf is brilliant too. He has an abundance of opportunities before him and I just don't want them to go to waste."

Nazz's father simply muttered something that sounded like "It's a delicate time in a young person's life."

Pertti looked to Nazz and smiled, "I suppose in a way we have you to thank for that Nazz."

The blonde stared, "Um, me?"

"Well, the truth is Rolf was never really interested in school until you started tutoring him."

Nazz blinked as she felt a fluttering in her chest. Rolf suddenly began to choke on his steak.

"Isn't that right dear?" Pertti spoke to Mustof, "He suddenly, out of nowhere, got super into studying and his school lessons after Nazz started helping him?"

"That's not true!" Coughed Rolf pounding his chest to get his food down.

"Aww I remember that!" Spoke Christine, "Rolf practically used to live here. I used to joke to Nazz that the only time kids are that devoted to 'tutoring lessons' is if someone has a crush on the other."

Having finally got his choking under control Rolf firmly placed his hands down on the table, "That's not true!"

Nazz jumped and Rolf looked down to see that one of his hands was now placed on hers. They looked at their touching hands then they looked at each other.

That two seconds of eye contact was all it took for certain memories to come flooding back. Their faces burned red. They both jumped from their seats to move away from the other. This caused the table to rock and Nazz's glass fell to the floor with a shatter.

"Bathroom!" Rolf said quickly leaving the table.

"Napkins!" Nazz said also leaving the table.

Their parents stared after them in surprise and confusion.

Suddenly Christine smiled "Guess what I made for dessert?" She sing-songed.

Mustof cried, "Oh I know! I know! A pot pie!"

"You got it!"

They all burst into laughter.

Markus mumble something along the lines of, "Your shirt is very inappropriate."

"Okay," Christine said happily as she led her family and her guests from the dining room to the living room, "This time the game is charades. And I say we start as usual. Markus you're on my team Pertti and Mustof you're together and Nazz and Rolf. How's that?"

Pertti said, "It sounds fine to-"

"Actually," Rolf spoke suddenly, "Rolf needs to get back home."

Nazz looked to him feeling some relief to this news. She could hardly look at him how the hell was she supposed to play charades with him?

Mustof said, "Really now, son?"

The young man looked to his father, "Rolf still needs to shovel the snow from around the property. Rolf will need to get up early for that. So…Rolf will take his leave now."

Mustof and Pertti shared a look. His mother said, "Very well son. We shall see you when we return home."

Markus mumbled something along the lines of "We appreciate you coming."

Christine said, "We'll see you next time. Take care out there. It feels like it's getting colder. Nazz why don't you walk him out?"

Before Nazz had a chance to speak Rolf quickly said, "That won't be necessary. Rolf shall see himself out."

Christine spoke again, "Oh by the way Rolf I want to say again thank you for stopping by at the Christmas party. I know you don't celebrate the holiday so it meant a lot to us. I never did get the chance to ask any of you but did you see each other at the party?"

Rolf looked at Nazz.

Nazz looked at Rolf.

A heavy tension that only they could feel seemed to thin the air. They blushed heavily. They looked away.

"No." Rolf said.

Nazz bit gently at her bottom lip.

Christine huffed looking to her daughter in disappointment, "Honestly Nazz-"

"Thank you for inviting me. Rolf takes his leave now." And with that he turned on his heel and made his way toward the door.

Nazz made to follow him but stopped. She realized she didn't know what she'd say to him.

They heard the front door open and shut.

Christine said, "Now this gives us an uneven number of players…"

"Mom that's okay I'm not really feeling up to playing right now. Is that alright?"

"Oh…alright. Is everything okay?"

Nazz began to make her way toward the stairs.

"Yeah, everything's fine. I just remembered there's some stuff for school that I wanted to take a look at. I don't want to start the new semester blindsided so…I'm just going to double check…stuff."

"Well, if you change your mind wild child, we can make due with an odd number of players. Oh, I know! Someone can keep score!"

"Okay. I'll let you know. Um…good night Mr. Mustof, Mrs. Pertti."

"Good night my dear." Said Pertti.

"It was good seeing you again Nazz." Said Mustof.

Nazz smiled kindly at them and made her way quickly to her room.

Once safely inside with the door closed behind her, she was able to let out a shaky breath. Tonight, had went absolutely terribly.

Nazz sank to a seat on her bed. A worry and a fear she didn't think would be possible graced her pretty features.

She'd barley been able to say three words to him.

She wondered.

Had she destroyed her friendship with Rolf?
