Hey readers - At long last, we have reached the end of another episode : )
I feels really strange to be done with 'Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village', but at the same time, I'm quite relieved. Out of the three Kanto Starter episodes, this was the one I knew what I needed Nolan to be doing the least in. The next two however, I've had Nolan's parts in the episodes planned out for literally months ; )
Also, a little bit of news. I'd like to thank a reviewer called Naman26 who left a suggestion for something they'd like to see in the footnotes of this story. This reviewer asked me to start recapping what Pokemon Nolan has so far. I honestly don't know what this hasn't occurred to me before as it might help you guys make different decisions based on what Pokemon Nolan already has acquired. So, as per the request, I have now added a new section to the footnote called 'Nolan's Pokemon Family Review'. This will list every Pokemon that Nolan will get in this story at some point, split up by the Nuzlocke they were obtained in. It will also contain a section on the Pokemon that have been written into this story so far. I'll be updating this new section as we go with new additions and new evolutions. Hopefully this will both help you guys when casting your votes, as well as update any new readers that want to be brought up to speed : )
Now, I think it's time we moved onto the result of last week's voting topic. Honestly, I am delighted to announce that the winner of the last voting topic was... Magby! This was definitely the one I was hoping for, so I'm so glad you guys picked it ; ) I know that Nolan has obtained a lot of Fire Type Pokemon during this particular Nuzlocke, but since they are a lot rarer in some of the later regions, I think this will be very useful in the long run : )
Beyond that, I just want to say a ENORMOUS thank you to everyone that has reviewed, favourited, and followed this story. I'd also like to say thank you for the name suggestions that were left in the reviews. The support that has been shown to the story is amazing, and it means so much to me, so thank you : )
Please remember that Pokemon is not mine, only my OC's are : )
I hope you enjoy this chapter : )
Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village - Part 7
The Hidden Village suddenly crackled with an intense, unspoken energy as the battle between the determined young trainer Ash and his loyal Pikachu against the wild, territorial Bulbasaur was set to explode into action. Ash, his voice ringing with unwavering resolve and the burning desire to prove his and Pikachu's strength, confidently started things off.
"Pikachu, go!" the raven haired boy exclaimed, as if unleashing a thunderbolt into the calm morning air.
Responding instantly to his trainer's command with an almost palpable eagerness to engage in combat, Pikachu, a small but potent ball of yellow fur and electric energy, shot forward like a lightning bolt across the grassy expanse of the clearing.
However, the wild Bulbasaur, a creature of the forest and undoubtedly experienced in defending its territory, stood firmly planted, emanating an air of seasoned battle prowess and a hint of a knowing smirk that suggested it was far from intimidated by Pikachu's headstrong rush.
A guttural growl rumbled from deep within Bulbasaur's throat, a sound that resonated with the untamed spirit of the wild and echoed the challenge it posed to Pikachu, a clear declaration of its readiness to defend its honour.
"Bulbasaur!" he bellowed, a primal cry that signalled the immediate commencement of its offensive strategy.
From the robust bulbous growth firmly rooted on its back, Bulbasaur unleashed its signature weapon, the formidable Vine Whip attack, a flurry of verdant, whip-like vines that snaked through the air with astonishing speed and precision. In rapid succession, these living tendrils lashed out, each aimed with pinpoint accuracy to ensnare and incapacitate the swiftly approaching Pikachu. Bulbasaur's intent was clear: to ensnare the Electric Type Pokemon in a constricting embrace, to neutralize its speed and agility before it could even launch an attack of its own, establishing dominance right from the outset of this clash.
Pikachu, despite his small stature, was renowned for his exceptional agility and lightning-fast reflexes, qualities that were immediately put to the ultimate test as he faced this barrage of vine attacks. With a desperate burst of speed and nimble footwork, Pikachu twisted and turned, contorting his body in seemingly impossible ways to evade the relentless assault of Bulbasaur's Vine Whip. Each dodge was a testament to Pikachu's dedication to training and his inherent speed, yet the effort required to maintain such frantic movements was quickly taking its toll. Heaving with exertion, his small chest rising and falling rapidly, Pikachu found himself panting.
"Chu... Chu..." he gasped, each one a desperate plea for air as his tiny muscles screamed in protest from the continuous strain of evading the snapping vines. The relentless need to stay one step ahead of Bulbasaur's attacks was rapidly draining Pikachu's stamina, leaving him vulnerable and in desperate need of a moment to recover his breath.
Seizing upon the fleeting moment of Pikachu's visible fatigue, Bulbasaur, with a surprising burst of speed that belied the typical perception of its species, darted across the open clearing, closing the distance between itself and the winded Electric Type with alarming swiftness. Ash, watching from the sidelines, was momentarily stunned, his russet coloured eyes widening in surprise as he witnessed the unexpected agility of the wild Bulbasaur, a stark contrast to the common understanding that Bulbasaur were not creatures known for their exceptional speed.
"Bulbasaur!" the wild Pokemon bellowed again, this time a fierce battle cry that echoed through the trees, a declaration of its impending attack and a clear attempt to intimidate its opponent.
In a blur of motion, Bulbasaur slammed into Pikachu with a powerful, full-bodied Take Down attack, a move that utilized its entire weight and momentum to deliver a crushing blow.
"Pika!" Pikachu shrieked in sheer agony as the force of Bulbasaur's Take Down slammed into him, sending him hurtling through the air like a ragdoll tossed carelessly aside.
Ash, his heart leaping into his throat, watched in horror as his beloved Pokemon partner, his unwavering companion in countless adventures, was sent flying through the air, a helpless projectile against the raw power of the wild Bulbasaur. A wave of deep concern washed over Ash as he frantically yelled out.
"Pikachu!" the raven haired boy shouted, his voice laced with worry and a rising sense of helplessness.
He could only stand by and watch as his faithful partner tumbled helplessly downwards, the forest floor rushing up to meet him with unforgiving speed, the weight of the battle suddenly shifting heavily against them.
With a sickening THUD!, Pikachu slammed into the hard, earthy floor of the forest clearing, the impact reverberating through his small frame and sending tremors of pain through his entire body. He whimpered softly, a sound of pure distress and physical agony, as he lay momentarily stunned, battered and bruised from the brutal collision. Struggling valiantly, driven by an inner spark of determination and loyalty to Ash, Pikachu attempted to push himself back to his feet, his limbs trembling and his whole body aching from the harsh impact.
"Pika..." he gasped weakly, each breath a struggle against the waves of pain washing over him.
Bulbasaur, in stark contrast, stood tall and unyielding, a smug smirk playing upon its face, radiating an aura of undeniable confidence. It was abundantly clear, even to Pikachu and Ash, that Bulbasaur was the more experienced and formidable battler in this confrontation, a veteran of territorial skirmishes and wild confrontations.
"Saur!" Bulbasaur growled again, a low rumble of victorious assertion.
The Seed Pokemon began to sprint once more, relentlessly closing the gap between itself and the struggling Pikachu, intent on pressing its advantage and securing a swift victory.
Ash, his initial confidence now rapidly dwindling, felt a knot of worry tighten in his stomach as he observed the relentless aggression of the wild Bulbasaur. He knew he had to act, had to find a way to help Pikachu, to warn him of the impending danger before it was too late. With renewed urgency, Ash shouted out a dire warning, praying it would be in time.
"Look out, Pikachu!" the raven haired boy's voice cut through the tension of the clearing, a desperate plea to his beleaguered partner.
Pikachu, hearing Ash's desperate warning, looked up, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and dawning realisation of the approaching threat. But before the small yellow creature could even begin to process the warning, to marshal his defences or attempt to evade the inevitable, Bulbasaur was already upon him, a verdant blur of motion and raw power.
"Bulba!" Bulbasaur roared, the sound echoing like a battle cry just before impact.
With another resounding THUD! that resonated through the quiet forest, Pikachu was once again sent flying through the air, propelled by the force of a second devastating Take Down attack.
"Pika!" Pikachu squeaked again, the sound laced with evident pain, each impact further chipping away at his stamina and resolve.
But deep within Pikachu's resilient spirit, something flickered, a spark of unwavering determination that refused to be extinguished. Instinctively, he corrected his tumbling flail through the air, adjusting his limbs with a surprising degree of coordination, and this time, against the odds, he managed to land squarely on his feet, though the jarring landing still sent shockwaves of discomfort through him.
Sadly, Pikachu's brief moment of equilibrium provided him little respite, for even as he regained his footing, the relentless wild Bulbasaur was already formulating its next assault, its gaze fixed intently upon its vulnerable opponent, a predatory glint in its eyes. A smug smirk curled at the corner of Bulbasaur's mouth, a silent declaration of its dominance as it uttered another curt battle cry.
"Bulba!" the little green creature yelled as he launched yet another offensive manoeuvre.
Bulbasaur unleashed another powerful Vine Whip attack, and this time, unfortunately, Pikachu was simply too slow, too exhausted, and too battered to dodge the swiftly approaching twin vines. With lightning speed, the verdant whips wrapped themselves tightly around Pikachu's small frame, constricting him with agonizing pressure. He could barely draw breath, the vines tightening their grip relentlessly, squeezing the air from his lungs. Pikachu squealed in escalating distress.
"CCCCHHHHAAAA!" the Electric Type Pokemon let out a choked cry of pure, unadulterated pain.
Over on the sidelines, Ash's heart pounded in his chest, a mixture of horror and helplessness washing over him as he watched Pikachu's torment. He felt a crushing wave of guilt, a heavy burden of responsibility for placing his beloved partner in such a perilous situation, feeling acutely inadequate as Pikachu's trainer for not being able to shield him from this brutal onslaught.
"Pikachu!" Ash cried out, his voice laced with desperation and a desperate plea for his Pokemon to somehow persevere.
Smirking at its clear tactical advantage, Bulbasaur effortlessly hoisted Pikachu up into the air, dangling him precariously by the constricting vines. With chilling indifference, Bulbasaur proceeded to slam Pikachu against the hard ground again and again, each impact sending fresh waves of pain through Pikachu's already battered body, all while Pikachu thrashed wildly in the air, his screams of agony echoing through the tranquil forest.
Tears welled up in Pikachu's pained eyes, a testament to the relentless brutality he was enduring. He desperately didn't want to fail Ash, especially not when Ash was so enthusiastic about the prospect of adding this very Bulbasaur to their team, yet a grim realisation was setting in – Pikachu wasn't strong enough, he couldn't possibly withstand much more of this relentless punishment.
Just as Pikachu's hope began to dwindle, a surge of renewed determination sparked within Ash's mind; he had to intervene, to offer Pikachu direction, to shift the tide of this increasingly brutal battle. In a surge of decisive action, Ash roared out his next command.
"PIKACHU, USE THUNDERBOLT!"
Still ensnared and constricted by Bulbasaur's vines, Pikachu, despite the excruciating pain and near-exhaustion, miraculously managed to obey Ash's command, his unwavering loyalty and deep bond with his trainer overriding his physical limitations.
"Pika...CCCCCHHHHHUUUUU!"
With a desperate surge of will, Pikachu screamed, his tiny body erupting in a brilliant, blinding corona of electric energy, crackling and sparking with raw power. Unleashing his most potent attack, Pikachu unleashed an exceptionally powerful Thunderbolt, a concentrated beam of pure electricity that surged outwards from his small frame. The lightning instantaneously engulfed the vines that held him captive, instantly superheating and charring the verdant restraints.
The electrical current, seeking the path of least resistance, then surged directly into the base of Bulbasaur's bulb, the very source of its Vine Whip attack, electrocuting the unsuspecting Grass Type Pokemon with a devastating jolt.
Bulbasaur immediately shrieked in agony, a piercing cry that betrayed the sudden and overwhelming pain.
"BBBBUUUULLLLBBBBAAAA!"
The sound echoed through the trees as the unexpected surge of electricity coursed through the Seed Pokemon's body. The raw power of Pikachu's Thunderbolt attack surged through Bulbasaur's small frame, an agonising jolt of electricity that ripped through muscle and nerve. Every fibre of Bulbasaur's being was overwhelmed by the intense electrical current, causing his entire body to convulse and seize uncontrollably. His verdant skin crackled with residual energy as spasms wracked him from head to toe, a horrifying display of the Electric Type attack's devastating force.
Bulbasaur's vine whips, previously so firmly wrapped around Pikachu, became loose and charred, his desperate grip faltering under the sheer agony that coursed through him.
The once-proud Bulbasaur was reduced to a flailing, twitching mess, desperately trying to escape the unbearable pain that Pikachu had unleashed upon him. This potent display of electric power had clearly taken a heavy toll on the Grass Type Pokemon.
Observing the dramatic effect of his Thunderbolt, Pikachu landed gracefully on the soft forest floor, a smug expression of satisfaction spreading across his tiny features. He puffed out his chest with pride, clearly relishing in his tactical victory against the wild Bulbasaur.
Across the clearing, the defeated Grass Type Pokemon lay slumped and motionless, the vibrant green of his bulb and skin now dulled and ashen from the electric assault. Barely conscious, Bulbasaur could only feebly twitch, his breathing shallow and ragged, a testament to the sheer force of the devastating attack.
The battle had taken its toll, leaving Bulbasaur vulnerable and ripe for capture, a stark contrast to the powerful and confident Pokemon he had been just moments before.
Pikachu, meanwhile, basked in the glory of his successful manoeuvre, his earlier struggles in the battle now seemingly forgotten in the face of this decisive victory.
Recognising this golden opportunity, Ash's heart pounded with anticipation as he swiftly reached for an empty pokeball nestled securely in his pocket. A rush of adrenaline coursed through his veins, his hands trembling ever so slightly with the excitement of potentially adding a Bulbasaur to his growing team. With focused determination, Ash carefully aligned his stance, taking deliberate aim at the barely conscious Pokemon slumped on the forest floor. A surge of excitement bubbled up inside him, and unable to contain his enthusiasm any longer, he bellowed with unrestrained joy.
"ALRIGHT! POKEBALL! GO!" the raven haired boy screamed.
With a powerful flick of his wrist, Ash launched the pokeball into the air, sending it hurtling towards the vulnerable Bulbasaur. The small sphere spun rapidly as it flew, a symbol of Ash's hopes and dreams of becoming a Pokemon Master hanging in the balance with this single throw.
The pokeball connected with Bulbasaur with a gentle but decisive thwack, instantly enveloping the Grass-type Pokémon in a flash of red light before snapping shut with a definitive click. The pokeball tumbled onto the earth with a muffled thud, and then began to rock back and forth, its central button pulsating with a rhythmic red glow. All eyes were fixated on the shaking pokeball, a collective breath held in the tense silence of the forest clearing.
The pokeball shuddered once… twice… three times…
Then, as if the drama could be stretched no longer, the flashing red light abruptly ceased. The shaking completely stopped.
A triumphant grin erupted across Ash's face as the monumental realization washed over him: he had successfully captured a Bulbasaur!
"WE DID IT! WE GOT BULBASAUR!" he cheered, his voice echoing through the trees.
Pikachu, equally ecstatic and brimming with pride for how he had actually managed to turn that battle around, bounced excitedly at Ash's feet.
"PIKACHU!" he cheered in joy as well.
Outside of the main action and over on the sidelines, Melanie's gaze lingered on the jubilant scene unfolding before her, a bittersweet ache blooming in her chest as Ash and Pikachu celebrated their hard-fought victory. A soft, wistful smile played upon her lips, a delicate mask concealing the complex emotions swirling within.
She knew, with a certainty that settled deep in her heart, that this was unequivocally the right path for Bulbasaur, a necessary step in the Pokemon's journey of growth and self-discovery.
Yet, the resolute logic of her mind wrestled with the quiet sorrow that threatened to overwhelm her as she contemplated the impending departure of her oldest and dearest Pokemon companion. Bulbasaur, a constant presence in the Hidden Village, a steadfast protector and a gentle soul, was poised to embark on a new chapter, one that would inevitably lead him away from her care, possibly forever severing the gentle threads of their shared existence, a prospect that was undeniably difficult for Melanie's tender heart to bear. Murmuring words carried only on the soft breath of a sigh, Melanie whispered into the tranquil air.
"Bulbasaur, I'll miss you," the pretty blue haired young woman breathed, a simple sentiment laden with the weight of years of shared experiences and unspoken affection.
Around Melanie's feet, the usual playful energy of the Hidden Village seemed muted, a subtle shift in the vibrant atmosphere reflecting the collective melancholy of its inhabitants. The wild Pokemon, typically bustling with cheerful activity, now stood in quiet clusters, their movements subdued, their chirps and calls less frequent, sensing the sombre undercurrent rippling through their haven. Poliwag, whom Misty had placed gently back on the ground amongst his peers, appeared particularly dejected, his usual bubbly disposition replaced by a drooping posture and a downcast gaze, his large, innocent eyes mirroring the quiet sadness that permeated the tranquil clearing, a tiny testament to the far-reaching impact of Bulbasaur's impending farewell.
Across the sun-dappled clearing, Ash, radiating pure elation, carefully picked up the pokeball that now held his newly acquired Bulbasaur, a tangible symbol of his latest triumph and a promise of new adventures. With a spring in his step and a heart brimming with anticipation, he turned to re-join Melanie and the others, eager to share his joy.
Understanding the unspoken need, the inherent desire for closure that resided within every heart, Ash paused briefly before approaching, an unusual display of intuition recognising that Bulbasaur deserved a proper farewell, a chance to bid adieu to the familiar faces and comforting environment of the Hidden Village that had been his home for so long.
With a gentle flick of his wrist, he released Bulbasaur back into the open air, allowing the Grass Type Pokemon to savour these precious final moments amongst his friends, a considerate gesture born from empathy and respect for the bonds of friendship.
As Ash and Bulbasaur drew nearer, Melanie's wistful smile blossomed into a genuinely warm and affectionate expression, a radiant beacon of acceptance and love that shone through the lingering melancholy. Kneeling gracefully amidst the soft grass, she opened her arms in welcome, her heart overflowing with a mixture of joy for Bulbasaur's new beginning and sorrow for their impending separation. With a gentle coo, she scooped Bulbasaur into her embrace, cradling him close in a tender hug, a physical manifestation of the deep emotional connection that had blossomed between them over countless seasons in the Hidden Village.
This was more than just a farewell.
It was a profound moment of shared understanding and unspoken love, a poignant pause before the inevitable parting of ways.
Nestled securely in Melanie's arms, Bulbasaur softly uttered his name, a gentle murmur filled with affection and an unspoken acknowledgement of the bittersweet farewell. He nuzzled against her cheek, a familiar gesture of comfort and companionship, their bodies pressed close in a silent conversation that transcended words.
They both understood, with an implicit certainty that needed no verbal confirmation, that this goodbye carried a weight of permanence, a finality that resonated deeply within their souls.
In that quiet embrace, they took a fleeting moment to reflect on the tapestry of memories they had woven together within the Hidden Village, a rich collection of shared moments, adventures, and quiet companionship, each thread imbued with love, trust, and mutual respect. Melanie's eyes glistened with unshed tears, shimmering pools reflecting the poignant beauty of their shared bond, a testament to the depth of their connection.
With a deep breath, she gently released Bulbasaur from her tender embrace, her hands lingering for a moment longer on his smooth skin, a final tactile memory etched into her senses. Standing tall once more, Melanie consciously shifted her focus, turning her attention back to Ash, Nolan, Misty, and Brock, her smile now radiating genuine warmth and encouragement, striving to mask the lingering ache in her heart.
"Have a safe trip," Melanie offered, her voice imbued with sincerity, her eyes meeting each of theirs in turn, conveying her heartfelt well wishes for their journeys ahead.
Ash nodded in earnest response, his youthful face alight with determination and respect.
"I promise to take good care of Bulbasaur," Ash declared, his voice ringing with sincerity, a solemn vow to honour the trust Melanie had placed in him.
From slightly behind Ash, Nolan, ever the playful and teasing friend, flashed a mischievous grin, gesturing playfully between himself, Misty, and Brock as he piped up, his voice laced with light-hearted humour.
"Yeah, and if he starts to let Bulbasaur's care slip for even a second," Nolan chimed in, emphasizing each word with dramatic flair, "Me, Misty, and Brock will be sure to get him back in line faster than Pikachu can use Thunderbolt!"
Melanie giggled happily at Nolan's playful banter, the sound a welcome lightness in the emotionally charged atmosphere, while Ash fondly rolled his eyes at his best friend's exaggerated teasing, a familiar dynamic that spoke volumes of their close-knit bond and unwavering support for one another, even in the face of gentle ribbing.
Melanie then turned her gentle gaze back to Bulbasaur, her heart overflowing with gratitude for his steadfast presence and unwavering loyalty.
"Bulbasaur," she began, her voice soft yet resonant with heartfelt emotion, "Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for watching over us all, for being our protector and friend".
Bulbasaur, understanding the depth of her gratitude, nodded his head in acknowledgement, a small smile gracing his gentle features.
"Bulba," he responded simply, a single syllable carrying the weight of his affection and reassurance, a silent promise to always remember the Hidden Village and the woman who had cared for him so deeply.
It was in this tender moment of shared gratitude that Brock, with a thoughtful and slightly hopeful expression gradually unfolding upon his face, stepped forward, hesitancy colouring his demeanour. Brock, his usual confident composure momentarily faltering, nervously cleared his throat, his words tumbling out in a rush.
"Uh, Melanie," he began tentatively, drawing her attention, "I've been thinking..."
Melanie, sensing the shift in Brock's usual light-heartedness, turned to face him with a warm smile, her expression radiating polite curiosity, genuinely intrigued by the direction of his words.
"Yes?" Melanie prompted gently, her open and welcoming demeanour encouraging him to continue.
Brock took a deep, fortifying breath, attempting to steady the nervous flutter in his chest and the slight blush rising on his cheeks.
"Well," the aspiring Pokemon breeder stammered slightly, "Since Bulbasaur is leaving, and you might need some extra help around here... I wouldn't mind staying behind and helping you out, if you needed it".
His words were met with a deafening silence.
Ash, Misty, and Nolan all gaped at him in stunned silence, their faces reflecting utter disbelief at the unexpected proposition. The notion that Brock, their steadfast and loyal companion, was even contemplating leaving their traveling group, and without any prior discussion whatsoever, sent a wave of shock through their ranks.
Before any of them could voice their mounting surprise and potential objections, Melanie reacted first, her response imbued with grace and genuine kindness. Genuinely touched by Brock's selfless offer, Melanie's warm smile deepened, radiating gratitude and appreciation, but she gently shook her head in affectionate refusal.
"That's incredibly kind of you, Brock," Melanie replied, her voice soft and sincere, "But we'll be just fine here. I wouldn't want to keep you from all of your wonderful adventures with your friends."
Brock's gaze quickly fell downwards, a blush of embarrassment deepening on his cheeks at the gentle yet firm rejection.
"Oh. Yeah, I guess you're right" Brock rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, his voice quiet as he murmured his response.
Nolan shook his head fondly at the slightly older boy's earnestness, before his gaze drifted downwards, taking one last, lingering look at the collection of wild Pokemon they had fought so diligently to protect. He noticed, with a pang of understanding, that the small Poliwag seemed to be bearing the weight of Bulbasaur's departure far more heavily than any of the others. Kneeling down in front of the Tadpole Pokemon, Nolan spoke to him directly, his voice gentle and empathetic.
"You're really going to miss Bulbasaur a lot, aren't you, Poliwag?" the golden haired boy said softly.
Poliwag looked up at him sadly, his large eyes glistening, and bobbed his whole body in an affirmative manner, a silent but powerful confirmation of his deep affection for Bulbasaur. Poliwag then glanced over at Misty, a subtle yet telling gesture that sparked a sudden realization in Nolan's mind.
"Misty too?" Nolan inquired, his voice laced with dawning comprehension.
Again, Poliwag sadly bobbed his whole body in confirmation, his gaze fixed on Misty, revealing the underlying reason for his profound dejection.
Nolan rubbed his chin thoughtfully for a moment, considering the implications of Poliwag's behaviour and the quiet longing in his eyes, before a smile slowly spread across his face and he stood up again, turning back to Melanie with a newfound idea taking shape.
"Melanie," Nolan began, his voice now infused with excitement and purpose, "Did you mean it when you said that it's the most rewarding for you when a Pokemon leaves here and finds a wonderful trainer? And when you said you hope they all find trainers like the four of us?"
Melanie, momentarily taken aback by the sudden shift in Nolan's demeanour and the directness of his question, paused briefly before a warm smile illuminated her features and she nodded her head firmly.
"Of course, Nolan. I meant every single word" the pretty blue haired young woman confirmed, her sincerity radiating outwards.
Nolan beamed at her, his idea now fully formed and ready to be unveiled.
"Well..." Nolan began, a playful glint in his eyes, "Maybe our group can help make absolutely sure that another one of these little ones gets a good and loving home, right here, right now!"
With a mischievous grin, Nolan gently hooked Misty's arm, pulling her forward with playful enthusiasm.
The orange haired girl yelped in surprise, caught off guard by Nolan's sudden action, but before she could voice her inevitable protest, Nolan continued, his excitement bubbling over.
"Misty? Poliwag? How about it?" the golden haired boy asked, his icy blue eyes twinkling with anticipation, the unspoken meaning of his suggestion hanging in the air, clear and obvious to everyone present.
He was suggesting that Misty take Poliwag with her, just like she'd wanted.
The atmosphere hung heavy with unspoken anticipation, a palpable stillness descending upon the group as Nolan's unexpected proposition resonated through the air.
Melanie's features were frozen in a mask of disbelief, her eyes widened in utter astonishment at the sheer audacity of the suggestion, a mirrored expression reflecting the stunned silence that had also overtaken Ash, Misty, and Brock.
In stark contrast to the collective shockwave rippling through the observers, Poliwag erupted in a flurry of uncontainable glee, his usually placid demeanour instantly replaced by an effervescent wave of excitement. A vibrant aura seemed to radiate from his small form as he positively bristled with an eagerness that was both infectious and utterly endearing, breaking the tension with his unrestrained joy.
Poliwag, his diminutive body quivering with barely suppressed enthusiasm, craned his body upwards to fix Misty with an unwavering gaze, his large, liquid eyes shimmering with an almost desperate plea. A wellspring of hopefulness poured forth from the depths of his innocent stare, each blink a silent question, each tiny movement a testament to his fervent desire.
Misty, caught in the enchanting vortex of Poliwag's hopeful expression, felt a warmth bloom within her chest, a gentle melting of her resolve as her heartstrings were tugged by the adorable creature's undisguised longing. The thought of welcoming Poliwag into her team solidified in her mind, growing from a fleeting fancy into an overwhelming yearning, a desire that resonated deep within her very core, eclipsing any previous reservations.
Turning her attention towards Melanie, Misty offered a hopeful smile, a silent request etched into her expression as she sought the older woman's blessing. Acknowledging Melanie's dedicated care for Poliwag, Misty recognized the inherent weight of Melanie's opinion in this delicate matter.
"What do you think Melanie?" Misty inquired gently, her voice laced with genuine consideration, "You're the one that's been caring for Poliwag all this time, so you kind of have a say here. Do you have any objections?"
The weight of the decision settled upon them all, hanging in the air like a tangible presence as both Misty and Poliwag turned their expectant gazes towards Melanie, their combined hopefulness creating a palpable pressure that permeated the small clearing.
Melanie, despite the undeniable pang of bitter-sweetness that resonated within her at the prospect of Poliwag departing from the sanctuary of the Hidden Village, responded with a radiant smile, a beacon of warmth directed towards both Misty and the eager Poliwag. Her affection for the small Water Type Pokemon was undeniable, her years of care fostering a bond that ran deeper than mere guardianship.
"Whilst you're right in that I have been caring for Poliwag for a long time Misty," Melanie began, her voice soft yet resolute, "He is still a wild Pokémon. The decision's completely up to him. I'll support Poliwag in whatever he ultimately decides to do."
Her words were imbued with a genuine sincerity, a testament to her selfless nature and her unwavering commitment to the well-being and autonomy of the Pokemon under her care.
Overwhelmed by an outpouring of pure elation, Poliwag demonstrated no hesitation, no lingering doubt clouding his decision as he propelled himself upwards in an enthusiastic leap, launching himself directly into Misty's waiting arms. He nestled himself against her with unrestrained affection, burying his head into the soft fabric of her clothing and emitting contented squeals of pure, unadulterated joy.
"POLI!" he exclaimed, his voice ringing out with happiness, a clear and unambiguous declaration of his desire.
It required no complex interpretation, no subtle reading between the lines to discern the truth – Poliwag had unequivocally made his choice, his heart set on embarking on a new adventure alongside Misty, his newfound friend and potential trainer, leaving no room for misinterpretation of his bubbly enthusiasm.
Misty, her heart overflowing with affection for the cuddly Water Type Pokemon nestled securely in her arms, beamed down at Poliwag, her own happiness mirroring his uncontainable delight. She reciprocated his embrace, hugging him tightly, relishing the warmth and weight of the small creature against her.
"I'd love for you to be my new Pokémon too, Poliwag!" Misty declared, her voice brimming with genuine excitement, "Welcome to my team!"
With a gentle readjustment, shifting Poliwag to rest securely in one arm, Misty deftly reached into her trusty backpack with her free hand, rummaging through its contents until her fingers closed around the smooth, cool metal of an empty pokeball. A playful smile danced upon her lips as she gazed down at her new companion and teammate.
"Let's make it official then, shall we?" she proposed with a wink.
Poliwag responded with an exuberant grin, his wide mouth stretching into a joyful expression that reached his very eyes. He bobbed his entire body in a vigorous affirmative motion, a full-bodied nod that conveyed his enthusiastic agreement.
"Poli! Poliwag!" he squeaked excitedly, his voice a high-pitched chorus of anticipation.
Misty gently tapped the cool surface of the empty pokeball against Poliwag's smooth, rounded head, and in a fleeting instant, a surge of crimson light enveloped the small blue Pokemon, drawing him into the technological confines of the pokeball.
There was no struggle, no tell-tale wiggles indicating a resistance to capture. The capture was instantaneous, seamless, and utterly successful.
Misty's face positively glowed, almost unable to fully comprehend the joyous reality of having a new teammate, a delightful turn of events precipitated entirely by Nolan's thoughtful suggestion. Turning her grateful gaze towards Nolan, Misty's expression radiated sincere appreciation.
"Thank you, Nolan," she expressed, her voice soft with genuine emotion. "I know you were really eager to add Poliwag to your own team, so I really appreciate you first allowing me to be the one to battle him, and then even suggesting that he comes with me instead of you".
Her words acknowledged Nolan's selfless actions, highlighting the inherent sacrifice he had made in prioritizing her happiness and Poliwag's well-being above his own aspirations.
"You're a true friend," she concluded, the simple statement carrying the weight of profound gratitude and heartfelt warmth.
Nolan, a faint blush rising to his cheeks, modestly waved aside Misty's heartfelt thanks, his demeanour humble and unassuming.
"Think nothing of it," the golden haired boy replied easily, his tone sincere, "I just saw that Poliwag was sad and knew that the way to remedy that was to have him come along with us, as part of your team".
He elaborated further, his words revealing a deeper understanding of the intricate bond between Pokémon and trainer.
"You really connected with him, Misty, and I was never going to stand in the way of the bond between a trainer and a Pokemon. It's too special," Nolan stated, his conviction unwavering, his respect for the unique connection evident in every syllable.
Misty's grateful smile deepened at his thoughtful words, solidifying her appreciation for his genuine friendship.
Without delay, she released Poliwag from the confines of the pokeball, welcoming him back into her embrace with open arms.
"Well that's it, Poliwag!" the Water Type Pokemon Specialist exclaimed happily, "You're officially my Pokemon now! I promise I'll be the best trainer to you that I can be!"
Poliwag, radiating pure contentment, snuggled closer against Misty, his small form vibrating with happiness.
"Poli!" the Tadpole Pokemon replied cheerfully.
Melanie, taking a step forward, extended a gentle hand to affectionately stroke Poliwag's smooth head, her touch conveying a bittersweet mixture of fondness and farewell.
"Well... it looks like this is goodbye to you too, Poliwag," she murmured wistfully, her voice tinged with gentle sadness, "I'm glad things worked out for you, and you found yourself a wonderful new trainer. You and Misty are clearly a match made in heaven, and I'm so, so happy for you both."
Poliwag looked up at Melanie, his large eyes glistening with unshed tears, reflecting the complex emotions swirling within him. She had been his steadfast caregiver, his source of comfort and security for so long, and the prospect of leaving her behind tugged at his tiny heart.
"Poli," he responded softly, the simple utterance laden with a depth of unspoken sentiment.
Interrupting the tender moment of parting, Ash's voice chimed in, practical and ready to move forward.
"Well, if there's nothing else, we really should be getting back on our way, we still have a long way to travel before we reach Vermillion City after all," the raven haired boy reminded them gently.
Melanie nodded sadly in understanding, her expression conveying her acceptance of their need to continue their journey.
"Of course," the pretty blue haired young woman agreed, "I wouldn't want to hold you up any longer, not when you've done so much for our little village. Nolan, are you going to be able to manage on that ankle of yours?" she inquired, genuine concern lacing her voice.
Nolan smiled, reassured by her thoughtful question, and nodded affirmatively.
"I think so," he replied, "It's still a little tender, but it doesn't hurt to walk on it anymore. I can manage, I just hope I don't slow these guys down too much."
Melanie's warm smile enveloped the group as she offered her heartfelt farewell.
So turning their backs on the enchanting Hidden Village; Nolan, Ash, Misty, and Brock along with their Pokemon, old and new alike, began their trek back into the dense, verdant embrace of the forest, the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy above casting shifting patterns on the forest floor. Each step took them further away from the secluded haven they had discovered and the gentle soul who resided there.
As they walked, a collective glance was cast over their shoulders, a silent farewell etched in their expressions as they offered a final wave to Melanie, their newest friend in this sprawling adventure.
"Goodbye, Melanie!" Ash, ever the demonstrative and outgoing one, broke the momentary silence, his voice ringing out clearly in the quiet forest air.
Melanie, still standing at the edge of the clearing, responded with an equally radiant smile, her own voice echoing back with heartfelt well wishes as she called back.
"Goodbye! Good luck!" the pretty blue haired young woman called, her words imbued with genuine sincerity and a touch of wistfulness as she watched them depart.
The group pressed onward, their path winding deeper into the verdant labyrinth of trees and undergrowth, the sounds of the Hidden Village gradually fading into the gentle rustle of leaves and the chirping of unseen forest creatures.
At Ash's side, nestled comfortably, was his freshly caught Bulbasaur, the Grass Type Pokemon whose initial resistance had melted away to reveal a gentle and inquisitive nature. A small sigh escaped Bulbasaur's lips, a soft, almost inaudible sound that hinted at the Pokemon's lingering emotions about leaving its home.
"Bulbasaur," he murmured softly, the single word carrying a weight of unspoken feelings, a mix of sadness and perhaps a touch of uncertainty about this new journey.
Ash, perceptive to the subtle cues of his Pokemon, glanced down at Bulbasaur, understanding the silent communication that passed between them. Offering a reassuring smile, a gesture of camaraderie and understanding, Ash spoke to his new companion in a gentle, encouraging tone.
"Don't worry, Bulbasaur," the raven haired boy said, his voice laced with kindness, "You'll see your friends again. As soon as the Pokemon feel better, they'll leave this village too".
His words painted a hopeful picture of future reunions and shared adventures beyond the secluded sanctuary they had just left behind.
Encouraged by Ash's thoughtful and comforting words, a small smile bloomed on Bulbasaur's face, the initial melancholy giving way to a renewed sense of optimism and trust in his new trainer. Bulbasaur nodded his head in agreement, a gesture of understanding and acceptance, his leafy bulb bobbing gently with the motion.
"Bulba," the Seed Pokemon chirped back in response, a short and sweet confirmation of his newfound contentment and anticipation for what lay ahead.
Just as the Hidden Village was about to vanish completely from their view, swallowed by the dense foliage, Melanie's voice carried through the trees one last time, a final farewell echoing after them.
"Take good care of each other! Bye bye!" she called out, her voice laced with warmth and genuine care, a final blessing as they embarked on the next leg of their journey.
With a few more steps into the heart of the forest, the last vestiges of the Hidden Village disappeared entirely, erased from sight as if it had been nothing more than a fleeting dream nestled within the woods.
A palpable shift descended upon Brock as the last glimpse of the Hidden Village faded from view, his shoulders slumping ever so slightly, a subtle but noticeable change in his usually cheerful demeanour. It became instantly apparent to anyone who knew him well, especially Misty, that he was going to miss Melanie very much. The unspoken connection, the gentle smiles, and the shared moments in the Hidden Village had clearly left a lasting impression on the aspiring Pokemon Breeder.
Catching his slightly saddened expression, a mischievous glint sparked in Misty's eyes. Knowing full well about Brock's rather obvious infatuation with Melanie, she couldn't resist the urge to tease him, a familiar dynamic playing out between the two friends. Misty sidled up to Brock's side, her steps light and playful, a smirk dancing on her lips as she prepared to unleash her playful ribbing.
"So what did Melanie say when you told her you loved her?" Misty began, her voice dripping with mock seriousness, the teasing tone unmistakable even before she delivered the punchline. "Did you kiss her good-bye?" she continued, unable to suppress a giggle that escaped her lips, the playful questions designed to poke fun at Brock's obvious affections.
Nolan, gingerly walking on his bad ankle with Meadow just behind them, couldn't help but snort in amusement at Misty's relentless teasing and Brock's increasingly flustered reactions. However, Brock, being the subject of the playful torment, found absolutely no humour in the situation.
The aspiring Pokemon breeder's whole face turned crimson, a blush of deep embarrassment spreading across his cheeks, colouring him a vibrant shade of red. Unable to endure Misty's teasing for another moment, Brock reacted instinctively, immediately covering Misty's mouth with his hand in a desperate attempt to silence her playful banter.
"That's enough stupid questions," Brock mumbled through gritted teeth, frustration lacing his voice. "Would you please stop embarrassing me already?" he pleaded, his voice a mixture of exasperation and plea, "You know, okay, so she's cute. I understand that," he admitted reluctantly, his words grudging and slightly mumbled as he acknowledged Melanie's undeniable charm. "But you don't have to keep rubbing it in," he finished, his voice trailing off into a defeated sigh.
Misty's protests were muffled under Brock's hand, a series of indignant 'mmphs' and muffled giggles escaping as she struggled playfully to free herself.
The scene devolved into a brief, comical tussle between the two friends, their playful wrestling a familiar and light-hearted display of their close bond.
Nolan, completely entertained by the spectacle unfolding before him, burst out laughing, his hearty guffaws echoing through the forest. Ash, completely oblivious to the underlying romantic subtext of the exchange, simply watched the scene with a bewildered expression, utter confusion etched on his face.
"Did I miss something? What's going on?" he asked, his question genuinely perplexed, completely unaware of Brock's hidden affections for Melanie.
Ash's new Bulbasaur and Misty's newly acquired Poliwag exchanged an odd, knowing look, their Pokemon eyes meeting in mutual understanding as if privy to a secret human dynamic they were just beginning to decipher, both wondering with a sense of mingled amusement and apprehension, what exactly they had gotten themselves into with this group of humans. But despite the mild chaos, a small smile touched their lips, or the Pokemon equivalent, a sense of anticipation bubbling within them. They couldn't wait to find out what other adventures, and likely comical situations, lay ahead on this journey with their new trainers.
"Bulba..." Bulbasaur smirked in obvious amusement.
"Poli..." Poliwag giggled happily.
And so with two new friends in tow for Ash and Misty, as well as a new move in Meadow's arsenal as far as Nolan's team went, the travelling quartet of friends continued on their way through the forest, hoping against hope that they would find their way instead of becoming lost in its vast depths once again.
After all, Vermillion City awaited them.
It wouldn't do for the four youngsters to keep it waiting any longer.
And that's not only another chapter finished, but another episode as well : )
Yay! Ash has his Bulbasaur! Bulbasaur is, in my opinion, Ash's second most iconic Pokemon, although he actually probably shares that spot with Charizard. And what do you guys think about Misty getting Poliwag at this point rather than in the Orange Islands? I've said it before, but I really feel like she got screwed over in the earlier episodes of the anime, so this was a way to help address that. I won't suddenly be giving Ash, Misty and Brock tonnes of new Pokemon though, as Nolan is the main character in this story and I want to focus to remain on him. In addition, this is the same Poliwag that Misty got in the anime, just a lot earlier. She isn't going to wind up with two ; )
But that's enough about the actual contents of this chapter. Instead, let's move on to this week's Voting Topic. Now I know we've had an awful lot of these lately, but it's going to be another Encounter Vote. I know people may be keen to start getting some Evolution Votes again, but I really want to get must of Nolan's Johto Pokemon decided before I start burning through those. They are coming soon though, I promise. In the meantime however, here are the options you guys have to chose between : )
Pokemon Options: -
Cliff Cave: - Misdreavus - Female - Rash Nature - Levitate Ability
Route 40: - Corsola - Female - Quiet Nature - Natural Cure Ability
Route 27: - Hoothoot - Female - Gentle Nature - Insomnia Ability
Safari Zone (Peak): - Magnemite - Genderless - Calm Nature - Sturdy Ability
Safari Zone (Wasteland) - Machop - Male - Naughty Nature - No Guard Ability
Okay, so I couple of, in my opinion, quite abstract choices this time around. I don't want to say too much, but there's one of these I'd want WAY more than any of the others. As usual though, the decision isn't up to me. It's all down to you guys, so please go leave your vote in a review and help pick the first Pokewalker Pokemon Encounter : )
And I think that's just about everything from me for this time. Thank you so much for reading this chapter and my story in general. I hope you are enjoying it all so far, and please consider leaving a review because I'd love to hear your comments and feedback : )
Until the next time, keep on reading : )
