Chapter 45: Night of Champions
Later that night, Angel was standing by the curtain, watching Kristy make her entrance. Now, she was the one who felt anxious and nervous. The only time she had ever been in the ring with Kristy was during training. This was the first time they had an actual match on television, let alone it being on a Premium Live Event. Not only that, but she was going into this one hurt and no one knew exactly how bad it was. She took a deep breath.
Calm yourself down, Angel. You're not gonna be able to do this safely if you let your nerves get the best of you before you even get out there. She thought. Suddenly, she was brought back to earth by someone placing a hand on her shoulder.
"You'll do fine, sweetheart. We believe in you" Roman's voice said.
"Thanks" Angel said, spinning around and kissing Roman on the cheek.
"At least Dean did his part and Kristy got out of that crazy contract" Roman said.
"I'm not surprised. Dean was pretty mad. He cares about Kristy more than anyone outside her family besides me ever has. The fact that he put Hunter out for at least a bit is just a plus" Angel said.
"Yeah, but you know how Hunter is. If and when he comes back, he's going to be really angry" Roman said.
"Just do me a favor since I'm going to be out of action for a bit would you?" Angel asked.
"Look out for Kristy and make sure Hunter goes after Dean instead of her?" Roman asked.
"Yeah. Basically. I want Kristy to be able to enjoy her title reign. As long as Hunter isn't here, she'll be OK. But once he gets back…" Angel said.
"Got it. Dean and I will both look out for her. Don't worry" Roman said.
Angel nodded. She hugged Roman one more time and then stepped through the curtain. She was hoping her nerves would have calmed down by now, but if anything, the noise of the crowd made her feel even more nervous. Calm down, girl. It's Kristy. The last person you need to worry about. Angel took a deep breath as she stepped into the ring and raised the belt over her head. Then she handed it over to the referee. As the bell rang, Angel had no more time to dwell on the fact that her nerves were turned up. She locked up with Kristy.
"Just make sure you protect my head, OK?" Angel whispered.
Kristy nodded. Then they broke apart. Angel smiled. Then she told Kristy to bring it on. Kristy just smiled back. She knew that Angel was not going to make things easy for her. They went for over half an hour, with many reversals, counters, and attempted pinfalls and attempted submissions. Finally, Angel was laying on her back on the mat. Her back was killing her and she felt tired, but even so things had gone great and the match had been hard hitting. Kristy had been true to her word and kept Angel safe throughout the whole thing.
Now, however, Kristy stepped through Angel's legs and wrapped her up in the Sharpshooter. Angel felt pain shoot through her back instantly. Even so, she was not going to tap out. She tried to crawl toward the ropes only to have Kristy pull her back to the center of the ring. Then Angel decided to try something else. She used her arms to push herself up, trying to break out of the hold that way. She stopped almost instantly as pain shot through her back all over again. Then she heard Kristy. She wasn't screaming at Angel to tap however and no one else could hear what was being said.
"Ang, if you don't tap, you're gonna end up hurting yourself more. Give up!" she said.
"I'll pass out before I tap out!" Angel snapped back.
Angel continued to struggle, trying everything she could think of to get out of the Sharpshooter, but nothing was working. All she did was exhaust herself. Not to mention the fact that the pain was really getting to her. She was about to raise her hand in order to tap when everything went black. She had passed out from the pain. The referee tapped Kristy on the shoulder, telling her to let go. Kristy let Angel out of the hold. The referee handed her her hearing aids. She popped them back in just in time to hear the ring announcer say that she was the winner and the new Champion.
Kristy smiled, but then she realized something. Angel hadn't moved an inch. She was laying on her stomach not moving. She was concerned, but before she could bend down to see if Angel was alright or not, a bell sounded and the lights went out. When they came back on, Angel had disappeared. Stephanie climbed into the ring with Kristy and raised her hand. Then she handed Kristy the new WWE Women's Title.
It was red and white with a giant WWE logo made out of stones. It already had Kristy's side plates screwed in. Kristy started to tear up as she raised the belt into the air. Then she posed on all four turn buckles. Then she rolled from the ring and ran back to the back. The first thing she did was head to the locker room. She threw open the door. Everyone was waiting for her and they all gave her hugs and congratulations on winning the title.
"Never mind me. Where is Angel?" she asked.
"They rushed her to the hospital. Daddy and Ro went with her" Lea said, looking as though she had been crying.
"I didn't injure her more, did I?" Kristy asked.
"No. I don't think so" Owen said.
"Is…Uncle Taker mad at me?" Kristy asked.
"No way, Mom. I don't think he knows how to be mad at you. As soon as the bell rang, a huge smile crossed his face. He was happy you won" Wyatt said.
"He was the one who took Angel from the ring, by the way. He wanted to make sure that you got your moment. He said you deserved it" Owen said.
Kristy nodded, but even so she started to cry in spite of herself. She wasn't sure if it was because she was happy that she had won or worried about Angel or happy that her Uncle Taker had come through for her again. Maybe it's all three of them. I'm glad Uncle Taker came through for me and I'm happy I won, but I want to see if Ang is OK. She thought.
"Mom, are you alright?" Wyatt asked
"I just have a whole mix of feelings going on, Little Man. I'm glad Uncle Taker helped me out and I am glad I won, but I want to see if Ang is alright." she said, wiping her eyes.
The others nodded. They left the locker room and headed for the parking lot. Along the way, they bumped into Triple H. He and Kristy looked at each other for a long time, but didn't say a word even though she really wanted to. She pushed past him and headed to their cars. They all drove to the hospital in silence. No one even wanted to speculate about how bad Angel's injury was. When they arrived at the hospital, they were surprised to find Taker outside waiting for them. Kristy ran up and hugged him, thanking him for getting Angel to safety and allowing her to have her moment.
"No problem, Kristy," Taker said.
"Is Angel alright?" Lea asked.
"She's still out of it. The doctors can't even give her anything for her pain. They want her to be awake when they check her out to make sure it's just her back" Taker said.
"But it is. Isn't it?" Lea asked.
"Yeah, but the doctors just want to be sure," Taker said.
Kristy nodded. They walked into the hospital and headed for the room that Angel was in. She was awake by now and looked really uncomfortable. She was holding Roman's hand and tears were rolling down her face.
"Ang! Are you alright?" Kristy asked.
"Hey, Champ. Congratulations. I'm alright. I'm in a lot of pain right now" Angel said.
"I made it worse, didn't I?" Kristy whispered.
"No, Kristy, you didn't. Don't worry" Angel said.
"You're sure?" Kristy asked.
"Yes. I'm sure. I'm alright. Just in pain. Stop worrying about me" Angel said.
"You should know by now that telling Kristy to not worry about you doesn't help" Taker said.
Angel laughed, but she nodded anyway. Her father was right. Kristy was going to worry no matter how many times Angel told her not to. Before anyone else could say another word, a nurse came in. She checked Angel's vitals over and announced that they would get her down to X-Ray as soon as they could. After that, they were going to transfer her to West Houston Medical Centre back home so that they could give her the correct treatment based on her medical history.
Angel nodded. They hooked up an IV line to her arm and put fluids and medicine in it. Within about twenty minutes, Angel had relaxed considerably. She wasn't crying anymore and was able to make herself comfortable for the first time in a while.
"Daddy, how do hospital transfers work?" Lea asked.
"Well, they get Angel to sign papers saying that she wants to be transferred and then she gets flown back home in a helicopter. Then she'll have surgery on her back" Taker said.
"As long as she stays stable" Roman said.
"That shouldn't be an issue. I'm fine. Just sleepy from the pain meds" Angel said, quietly.
"How are we gonna get back? We can't all fit in a helicopter" Lea said.
"We'll figure something out, Little One. Don't worry" Taker said.
"What about me? I wanna go too" Wyatt said.
"That's up to your Mom, kiddo" Angel said.
Wyatt looked at his Mom hopefully. She nodded, deciding that it was best for him to go with Angel and Taker, so that she didn't have to worry about him and he wouldn't worry about his Aunt Angel so much. Kristy knew that if she took him on the road with her, he would be miserable and constantly worrying if Angel was alright.
"Do you mind, Uncle Taker?" Kristy asked.
"No. I don't mind. I know what he's like. If he stayed with you, all he'd do is worry" Taker said.
"Yay!" Wyatt said, while Lea smiled.
Just then, the doctor came in with the transfer papers. Taker sat and read them to Angel. She nodded and got her Dad to sign the papers on her behalf since she couldn't see.
"Only one of you can go with her on the ride back" the doctor said.
"Daddy" Angel said automatically.
"But…then how are we gonna get back?" Wyatt asked.
"I can fly back to Houston with you guys" Roman said.
"Roman, are you sure?" Angel asked.
"Sure. They're too young to be flying on their own. Besides, I'm going to be there anyway. At least while you're still in the hospital. I'll go back on the road as soon as I know you're at home and safe" Roman said.
Angel beamed. Lea and Wyatt were smiling too. Kristy kept looking from Angel to Dean to the title on her shoulder. Angel could tell that she was having a debate with herself about staying on the road or going back to Houston with them.
"Don't you do that, Kristine. You're staying on the road and defending the title. You have worked way too long, way too hard and come way too far to quit on my account. The ball is in your court. Take it and run. I'll be fine. Daddy, Uncle, Ro and the little ones will be with me. You'll have Dean by your side. He'll keep you safe" Angel said.
"Of course I will. I love you. And if I don't keep you safe, I'm gonna get killed" Dean said with a laugh.
Kristy nodded. She walked over to Angel and gave her best friend a gentle hug, whispering something in her ear in the process, to which Angel nodded. Then she gave Wyatt a hug and told him that he'd better be good for Papa Taker or he'd be in trouble later. He agreed. Then she hugged Lea, Roman, and Taker before leaving the room with Dean, closing the door behind her.
"What did she say?" Wyatt asked.
"She thanked me" Angel said.
Taker and Roman nodded. They knew what that meant, even if Lea and Wyatt weren't sure exactly. About an hour later, the doctor came back and announced that it was time for Angel to head back home and the helicopter was ready and waiting for her. Everything was fine until they started to wheel Angel from the room. At that point, Lea started to cry.
"Please. Wait just one second" Angel said.
Everyone nodded and stopped what they were doing. Taker lifted Lea up so that she could see Angel. Then Angel took her and set her on her lap, just as she had done when Lea had been smaller.
"Hey. It's OK. I know you don't like goodbyes, Baby Lea, but you'll see me in a few hours" Angel said.
"But…" Lea said.
"I'll be alright, sweetheart. Daddy will be with me the whole time. You don't need to worry. I don't intend to go anywhere" Angel said.
"Daddy…promise me that no matter what happens, you'll keep Angel safe" Lea said, looking up at him.
"I promise, Little One." Taker said.
"And Roman will keep an eye on us so that Papa Taker doesn't have to worry" Wyatt said.
"Of course. Nothing will happen to you guys" Roman said.
Lea nodded. She gave Angel one last hug and a big kiss on the cheek. Then Roman picked her up and put her back down on the floor. Then he lifted Wyatt up so that he could give Angel one more hug. He set Wyatt back down and then leaned over and gave Angel a kiss, making Angel blush.
"We'll see you later" he said.
"Yep. See you soon" Angel told him with a smile.
"You two behave yourselves. Just because you're with Roman and not us doesn't mean you can act up. Understood?" Taker said.
"Yep!" Lea and Wyatt said in stereo.
Taker gave both kids a hug and then left the room with Angel. Lea, Roman and Wyatt followed, heading out the front door and to the airport. It had been a long night so far and it wasn't quite over yet.
