Cora smiled tiredly at each one of her siblings.
"Pat. Dad's shirts look nice on you. Although they are a little big."
Pat made a face as if he were shocked.
"Dad's shirts are perfect on me sis."
Cora laughed and shook her head. She noticed all three of her younger sisters looking at her. Maisie was the first to speak.
"That looks like your real hair Cora. It's pretty too. Can I try it on?"
Keena nudges Maisie and shook her head no.
"Maisie, we can't try her wig on. Our germs."
Jamie and Eddie were also standing in the room, wearing stuff from their closet. But it was Jamie who spoke next.
"That's right honey. Our germs can make Cora very sick right now. Her immune system is very low."
Cora perked up and directed her next compliment at Maisie.
"That dress looks beautiful on you Maisie. Maybe we can find you one the exact color and pattern and you can be mama's mini me."
This made Eddie giggle.
"Oh, we tried that with you Cora. I don't think I've ever shown you photos of when you were a baby, you and I had matching outfits on."
Cora smiled as Eddie came closer and unlocked her phone, going through her photos and finding a 13-year-old video of Cora.
"Mama. Patick. Baby."
Smiling, Cora watched herself placing kisses to Patrick's tiny forehead. She then heard Jamie's voice
"Thank-you for being such a good helper baby girl. Daddy is proud of you."
Smirking, Cora giggled a little and looked to Jamie.
"Look how young you were here daddy…"
Jamie feigned a hurt pride and put a hand to his chest.
"A younger version of me ladybug. Anyways, I'm still young."
Jamie turned around and raised his eyebrows at Cora and added a thought.
"So, what do you think of this? How do I look?"
Cora lightly clapped her hands and giggled.
"You look very handsome daddy. You look like your going to a fancy restaurant and then a play."
Eddie placed her phone back in her dress pocket. Then she spun around and put her hands up slightly.
"How do I look in this?"
Placing a finger under her chin, she tapped it.
"Hmm… I love that dress mama. Where'd you get it?"
A laugh escaped Eddie's mouth, and she put her hands on her hips.
"Your dad got this for me when we were on our honeymoon."
Cora scrunched up her nose and made a face.
"Ugh! Mama! I don't want to hear the details about your guys' honeymoon!"
Both Jamie and Eddie burst out laughing. Cora had an invisible question mark on her face.
"What? Am I missing something?"
Jamie stifled his laugh and shook his head, putting his hands up.
"I'm sorry ladybug. I bought your mom this dress for her birthday two months ago."
Cora frowned and crossed her arms over her chest. Keena spoke up from the far side of the room.
"Daddy. That's mean!"
Jamie looked at Keena.
"I'm sorry honey. It wasn't meant to be mean."
Cora cracked a smile and began to laugh.
"I had you there daddy. I saw it on mama's side of the closet last week."
Eddie laughed and shook her head.
"You are more like me than you think honey."
Cora shook her head.
"I thought you said I was more like daddy."
Jamie smiled and sat down in Cora's computer chair.
"You are like both of us baby girl. I have another surprise for you."
Cora's eyes lit up.
"What's the surprise daddy?"
Jamie looked towards the door and speaks up.
"You can come in now."
Cora got a curious look on her face.
"Aunt Erin! Did daddy invite you over to see our fashion show?"
Erin gave Cora a warm smile.
"Your dad wanted to surprise you. You would look beautiful in your mom's dress."
Cora gave a shy smile.
"I would? I've always liked mama's fashion sense."
Erin smiled and took a seat next to the bed.
"So, how's the fashion show going? I see your sisters and Pat have joined in."
Cora gave a soft laugh.
"Good. I'm trying to decide which clothes I like best. I do really love what Keena is wearing. I wish they had it in my size."
"How are you doing ladybug?"
Cora shifted in the bed uncomfortably.
"Daddy, my chest hurts…"
Jamie got closer to the bed and sat down in the chair.
"Where does your chest hurt honey?"
Moving her hand slightly she pointed toward her port.
"By my port…"
Giving Cora a sympathetic look, Jamie grabbed a pair of gloves from a box he had stored on top of her dresser.
"Can I see honey? I hope it's not an infection. Tell me if this hurts or is uncomfortable, ok?"
Cora nodded and stayed still.
"Ok. It feels like the catheter connected to my port is all twisted up inside."
Jamie took a quiet breath and let it out slowly.
"How bad is the pain?"
Moving in the bed again Cora shook her head.
"It's a 4. Manageable. I don't need any morphine right now daddy. I'm ok. It only hurts if I move a certain way."
Eyebrows furrowed, Jamie moved his fingers around the port, a frown coming to his face.
"I think we should get this checked out ladybug. This isn't really in my wheelhouse. If your catheter is twisted inside you, it'll have to be removed and a new one will need to be placed."
Cora gave out a frustrated sigh.
"Why can't things ever be simple daddy?"
Letting out his own frustrated sigh, Jamie shook his head and fixed Cora's shirt, removing his gloves.
"I wish I knew the answer to that question baby girl. But unfortunately, I don't. I'm going to make a call so that we can get you and get your port looked at."
Cora nodded and winced.
"I just want it to stop hurting."
Jamie let out another sigh and nodded in understanding.
"I know honey. We'll get you feeling better again."
Jamie nervously paced around in the observation lounge above the OR. Through the intercom system he could hear four alarms on four different machines going off. Switching the speaker on, on his end, he took a breath to collect himself and then spoke.
"You have to get her heart rate down. She's going to start fibrillating."
Doctor Michaelson who was in charge of conducting the surgery projected his voice up towards the observation lounge his tone terse and exasperated.
"We're doing our best to get her stable Doctor Reagan. We may or may not lose her on the table."
The pit in Jamie's stomach grew bigger still as the monitors kept blaring incessantly. This might've been the wrong decision to take. His heart suddenly sank as a nurse next to Doctor Michaelson sounded alarmed.
"Doctor, she's seizing."
Jamie felt his chest begin to heavy. But he wasn't going to break down and cry. He had to keep it together. She was going to be ok. He knew she was.
