Chapter 11-There Was…a Night

A few weeks later…

Hank and Jenna had just climbed into bed when they heard banging on the door. They looked at each other.

"Who could that be?" Jenna asked.

"I don't know." He pulled out his gun. "Wait here."

As Hank got closer to the door, he heard, "Hank, it's Erin. Put the gun down."

He sighed, opening the door. "Erin, you have a key. Why won't you use it?"

"Because you still insist on coming to the door armed. But I need to talk to you, now."

He looked at her closer and noticed her tear-streaked cheeks. "You've been crying."

"Yeah. Please, we need to talk."

Just then they heard Jenna come down the stairs. "Hank? Everything ok?"

"In here," Hank said.

When Jenna walked into the living room and saw them, she rushed to Erin's side. "Sweetie, what's wrong?"

"I need to talk to Hank. I'm sorry to crash your night."

"It's ok, Erin. We're here for you, both of us, for whatever you need." Hank reached over and squeezed Jenna's hand as she asked, "Do you want some privacy? I can go back upstairs."

"No, it's ok. You can stay," Erin said. Jenna sat down on the other side of Erin, taking her hand.

"Ok kiddo. What's wrong?" Hank asked, putting his hand on her shoulder.

"Bunny."

Hank let out an exasperated sigh. "Bunny. What did she do now?"

"You know I've been trying to figure out who my father is for awhile now."

"Yeah."

"Well she gave me a couple more names, and those turned out to be bogus."

Hank rolled his eyes. "Figures."

"So Jay and I went over there tonight and demanded to have the whole list of possibilities. We...may have threatened her a little, so she gave me a list of...six other people."

"I'm sorry Erin. She was a lot back then."

"Yeah I know, but what I can't figure out, if this is true or if she's trying to hurt me, but Hank...why are you on the list?"

Hank immediately looked down, unable to make eye contact with her. He glanced up at Jenna, a look of shock on her face. He squeezed Erin's hand before finally speaking. "Erin, you know I knew Bunny before you were born."

"Yeah, I knew that. Just recently, but I knew that."

"Well, there was...a night."

Tears came to Erin's eyes. "Just a night, or were you in a relationship?"

"Just a night. There was a lot of alcohol, and things happened. She was jumping around from guy to guy, and I was next on her list. I didn't see her for quite awhile after that. By the time I saw her again, you were probably two or three."

"Did you suspect that I could be yours?"

"When I found out how old you were, I wondered, except that I knew her pattern, so I knew there was a very slim chance. I asked who your father was, and she said Jimmy. I knew he was the one she was most consistently with, so I just moved on."

Erin wiped at her tears. "So you taking me in had nothing to do with you feeling an obligation to take care of the kid that might be yours?"

Hank squeezed Erin's hand. "Absolutely not. I took you in because you needed someone to take care of you. You would've died on the street. I had no idea that Jimmy wasn't your father until Jay did the DNA test."

"You're telling me the whole truth?" Erin pressed.

"I wouldn't lie to you about this, kid. This is the truth, I promise."

"Do you think I could be your daughter?"

Hank shrugged. "I guess there's still a slim chance, but probably not. But if you want a DNA test, just to know for sure, I'm more than willing to do that. You know I'd do anything for you Erin."

"I know. Thank you. I'll think about it."

"Whatever you need."

Erin opened her mouth to speak, but stopped. She knew she needed to ask her question, that she wouldn't be able to sleep that night if she didn't get the answer, but she really didn't want to know.

Hank could tell she was struggling. "Erin, whatever you want to ask, ask me."

Erin took a deep breath. "Were you with Camille when you were with Bunny?"

Again, Hank looked down before speaking. "Yes. I was with Camille when I spent the night with Bunny."

Erin's tears came harder. "No," she said softly, covering her face with her hands as she cried.

"Erin," Hank started.

"No. No! How could you do that to her?! With Bunny, of all people?! Camille was the best person I've ever known! How could you hurt her like that?!"

Jenna put her arm around Erin, choking back her own tears. All of this happened long before she met Hank, but their hurt was making her heart ache.

"Erin, I was in a bad place. I was...a different person at that time. That night was...a wake-up call for me. I knew I had to change my life, be a better husband and better cop. So I straightened up and moved on."

"Did Camille know? Did you ever tell her?"

"I came home after it happened and told her. It was two in the morning. I woke her up, confessed what I did, she yelled at me, slapped me really hard across the face, and told me to get out. I slept at Al's and the next day, I came home, I told her I'd do anything I could to fix this. We worked through it, and a year later, we were pregnant. I've never forgiven myself for hurting her, but she forgave me. I didn't deserve it, but I'm grateful for it."

"Ok. I'm glad you didn't lie to her."

"I couldn't do that, hurt her more than I already had."

"Ok," Erin said, wiping at her tears as she stood up.

"Erin," Hank said as he and Jenna stood with her.

"Thank you for being honest with me. I have a lot to think about. I'll see you at work tomorrow."

Hank took her hand to stop her. "Never forget, no matter what happens, I love you. Camille did too."

"I love you too Hank." She pulled away and walked outside.

Jenna squeezed Hank's hand before following Erin out. "Erin," she called after her.

"Yeah," Erin said tearfully, turning around to face her.

"Sweetie, I know this is hard, but don't forget how much you mean to him. He loves you so much."

"I know, I just...needed some answers. Seeing Hank's name on Bunny's list...I was shocked. It's hard because I know that whatever he did with her is something he deeply regrets. He hates her and has for a long time. But whatever he did with her...may be the reason I'm here. I may be the result of his...mistake." She covered her face with her hand as her tears came harder.

Jenna pulled her into her arms as Erin cried into her shoulder. Jenna held her close, rubbing Erin's back as she cried. As upset as Erin was, it felt so good being held by a mom, and for a moment, she could almost feel Camille's presence next to her.

Finally, Jenna spoke. "Erin. You are not a mistake. You are an incredibly special person, to so many people, including me."

"You?" Erin asked tearfully.

"Me. I love that my relationship with Hank means I get to have you in my life too. You've become like another daughter to me. As for Hank, he's told me on more than one occasion that you are one of the best things that's ever happened to him. You are his daughter, in every way that matters. Do what you need to do, take the time you need, but don't forget how much he loves you, ok?"

"Ok. Thank you Jenna. I'm glad you're in his life. Mine too."

Jenna hugged her again. "Get some rest. Goodnight Sweetie."

"Goodnight Jenna."

When Erin was gone, Jenna walked back inside the house. Hank was sitting on the couch, his head in his hands. She walked over and put her hand on his shoulder.

"Babe," she said softly. "Let's go to bed."

"Jenna, I..."

"Stop. We can talk tomorrow. Let's get some sleep."

He looked up at her. "Have I lost Erin?"

"Honey no," Jenna said, sitting next to him. "She's just processing. She loves you, and you will get past this with her."

"What about us? Are we going to get past this?"

"We're fine. Yes, I have some questions, but it's nothing that can't wait, and it's nothing that is going to keep me from sleeping next to you. So, let's go get some sleep, ok?" He nodded and she took his hand, pulling him up next to her.

"I'm glad you're here, and I'm glad you're staying. I love you Jen."

"I love you Hank," she said as he kissed her.

The next morning, Erin decided that she and Hank needed to have a conversation about what happened last night. When she walked into the district, Hank was already in his office. She walked in and closed the door behind her. "Hey kiddo," he said.

"Hey. Can we talk for a minute?"

"Of course."

She sat down in a chair in front of his desk. "I think I want to do a DNA test."

Hank walked around the desk and sat in the chair next to her, taking her hand. "Like I told you last night, if you want a DNA test, I'll do it. I'll call over to Med and get it set up for today if we can."

"Thank you," she said, squeezing his hand.

"I just...no matter what the results say, you're still my daughter, understand?"

Erin nodded. "Yeah. I understand."

Hank squeezed her hand. "I'll call Med."

Later that day, when the results were ready, Sharon Goodwin called Hank and Erin to her office, offering to go over the results with them. Jenna and Jay waited in the hall while Erin and Hank waited for the results in her office.

Sharon sat down at her desk as they sat in chairs in front of her. "Ok, I have the results. Do you want to read them, or do you want me to just tell you?"

"Just tell us," Erin said.

"It's going to be ok Erin. No matter what it says," Hank said, squeezing her hand as he put his arm around her. As much as he was trying to reassure her, he was conflicted himself. A part of him would love to be her biological father, but a part of him would be so upset having missed out on her childhood, leaving her to be raised and abused by Bunny when she could've been with him and Camille for her entire life.

Sharon opened the envelope. "The results show that Hank, you are not Erin's father."

Hank closed his eyes for a moment, taking in the news. He pulled Erin closer. Erin looked down, the tears she'd been holding back finally flowing down her face. Hank could tell she was struggling.

"Erin, I told you that no matter what happened here, you're still my daughter," he said softly.

"I know, I just...a big part of me really wanted it to be you."

"I know. But we can keep looking if you really want to know."

"I'll think about it. We should go. Thank you Ms. Collins. We really appreciate you doing this for us."

"You're welcome, Detective. I'm glad I could help. I'm just sorry we didn't get the outcome you wanted."

"We'll be ok. Thank you Sharon," Hank said, shaking her hand.

"You're welcome Hank."

When they stepped into the hall, Jenna and Jay were waiting for them. Erin immediately went into Jay's arms, crying into his chest.

Jenna searched Hank's face for a clue about what happened. He shook his head as he took her in his arms. "I'm so sorry honey," she whispered, holding him close.

"It's ok. We'll be ok."

Finally, Erin turned to Hank. Her tears broke his heart all over again, and a few tears made their way down his face. "I'm sorry kiddo."

Erin nodded. She let him take her in his arms, holding her close as she cried into his chest. Jenna looked down, wiping her own tears.

After a few minutes, Erin pulled away, trying to stop her tears. "It's ok. I should've known. It would've been too perfect."

Hank put his hands on her shoulders. "Erin, like I told you before, this doesn't change anything. I don't care what some stupid test says. I'm going to be here for you, always. You understand?"

"Yeah. I mean, you're always going to be my father. I'm not looking for someone to replace you. I just...wish I knew."

"I know. I wish we knew too. I understand why you want to know. I'll help you track the others down if you want me to."

Erin shrugged. "I think I just need a break from all of it for awhile."

"Ok." He hugged her again. "Never forget I love you, Erin."

"I love you too Hank," she said tearfully.

Friday night, two nights later, Hank and Jenna had dinner plans with Erin and Jay. Erin loved seeing Hank and Jenna together, and she loved how much they felt like a family when they were all together. She knew how special Jenna was to Hank, and she looked forward to having Jenna in their lives for a very long time.

Hank and Jenna walked hand in hand up to the restaurant where Erin and Jay were waiting outside for them. They shared hugs and handshakes before going inside. As Jay opened the door for them, they heard a familiar voice behind them.

"Well well well. What do we have here?"

They all turned around to see Bunny, Erin's mother. Erin cringed, not ready to see her mother yet, after the latest turn of events regarding her birth father.

"You need something, Bunny?" Hank asked.

"I just saw my baby girl and her cute boyfriend, so I thought I'd come say hi. How are you Sweetie?" she asked as she reached for Erin.

"I'm fine Bunny," Erin said through gritted teeth, reluctantly hugging her.

"Now whoooo is this?" Bunny asked, pointing at Jenna.

Hank stepped between them, pushing Jenna protectively behind him. "None of your business."

"Is she a girlfriend? Are you dating? Finally moving on from your precious Camille?"

"MOM!" Erin said.

"She's a little young, isn't she? She looks like she's closer to Erin's age than yours. I'm a little disappointed Hank."

"E-NOUGH!" Erin said, pushing Bunny backwards. "I can't believe you're doing this right now."

Bunny leaned around Erin, trying to talk to Jenna. "Has he told you everything he's done? Prison, corruption, all of the lies and murders? He's a really great guy," she yelled sarcastically.

Hank pulled Erin back, standing nearly nose to nose with Bunny. "You're done. Get out of here. Now."

"Are you afraid I'll spill all of your secrets? Did you tell her about you and me?"

Hank balled up his fists, using every ounce of self-control in his body to keep from strangling her. Finally, he raised his finger, pointing behind her. "Get. Out. Now. Or I'll remove you myself. I'm not going to let you hurt Erin like this."

Bunny held her hands up and started backing away. "Fine. I'll go. She's cute though. Young. I bet you have a lot of fun."

Hank stood at the edge of the sidewalk until Bunny was out of sight. He closed his eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath, before turning around to face Jenna, Erin, and Jay. He was sad to see Jenna and Erin both fighting back tears. When Erin's eyes met his, her tears fell.

"Erin," he said, taking her in his arms.

"I'm so sorry," she said, crying into his chest.

"It's ok. You have nothing to be sorry for. You don't have any control over her."

"He's right Sweetie," Jenna said, rubbing Erin's back. "This isn't your fault."

Erin pulled back, wiping at her tears. "I'm just sorry she's ruined the evening. I think I'll just have Jay take me home. I'm in no shape to be out in public."

"Why don't we go back to my place or Hank's and order pizza or something? The evening doesn't have to be over," Jenna said.

"Jenna's right, Erin. We don't have to let Bunny win," Jay said.

"What do you say, kiddo?" Hank asked. "Pizza at my house?"

Erin nodded, wiping at her tears. "Ok. Let's do that."

"Good. Did you drive or Uber?"

"Uber. What about you two?"

"We drove. Come back to the house with us."

[][][][][][][][][][]

As they drove to Hank's house, Jenna called in a pizza order to be delivered when they got home. They made small talk the rest of the drive, trying not to think about their encounter with Bunny.

Shortly after they reached Hank's house, the doorbell rang. Jenna looked up at Hank.

"You get the pizza, and I'll pour the wine," she said.

"Deal," he said, giving her a quick kiss as he headed to the door.

[][][][][][][][][][]

They ate pizza, drank wine, and shared stories until well after midnight.

Erin leaned over on Jay's shoulder, closing her eyes as she yawned. "We should get home, babe."

"Yeah we probably should," Jay said.

"You're welcome to stay here, up in your old room," Hank said.

"Really? Both of us?" Erin asked.

Hank rolled his eyes. "Yes, both of you. Go on up."

"Thank you Hank," Erin said as they all stood. She hugged him tight, closing her eyes for a moment. "Thank you for tonight. I'm glad we didn't let Bunny ruin the night. This was really nice."

"For me too. It's good having you here."

"It's good to be here. I just…I love this little family that we've created."

"I do too, kiddo."

Erin kissed his cheek and gave Jenna a hug. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight Sweetie," Jenna said.

Jay hugged Jenna and shook Hank's hand. "Thanks Sarge. Goodnight."

"Night, Halstead."

Jenna and Hank watched them go up the stairs. Jenna slid her arms around Hank's waist as he put his arm around her, kissing the top of her head. "They're good together," Jenna said softly.

"Yeah yeah," he mumbled under his breath.

"Babe. You need to go easier on him. He loves her."

"You think?"

"Definitely. He puts up with you AND Bunny. He wouldn't do that if he didn't love her."

"You're funny, you know that?"

Jenna took his hands, pulling him toward the stairs. "Come on. Let's go to bed."

When they climbed into bed, Hank sat down, leaning against the headboard as he said, "Can we talk about Bunny? We haven't really had that conversation yet."

"Hank."

"Please. I just don't want anything weird between us."

Jenna moved to sit next to him, his arm going around her shoulders. "There isn't. Babe, I'm aware that you had a life before me. We both had different lives. I'm not worried about her."

"I didn't have a relationship with her. It was...a drunken night, over thirty years ago. It didn't mean anything, and she just moved on to the next guy."

"Ok."

"Ok?"

"Hank, I've had my own night like that. A terrible mistake I deeply regret, just a few months after my divorce. I definitely should've known better, especially considering who it was."

"I should've told you about her sooner, since she's Erin's mother."

"It's ok. It was a long time ago. Let this go, ok?"

Hank stroked her cheek, pulling her close and kissing her. "You're amazing."

She put her hand on top of his. "So are you."

He kissed her again. "Goodnight Jen."

"Goodnight Hank."
