Chapter 23-Who is She to You?

Hank and Jenna jumped back into their regular routine when they returned from California. Crime didn't stop just because of the holidays, so Hank and the unit were pretty busy, working early mornings and late nights.

Jenna smiled when she saw a text from Hank on her phone. She hadn't heard from him all day because of how busy he was. When she read his message, she was disappointed.

'Hey babe. Case took an unexpected turn, so it's going to be a late night, if I get to leave at all. I'm sorry Jen'

She sighed as she prepared a text back. 'It's ok. I understand how it works. Can I at least bring you dinner?'

'I sent the unit out, and Erin is bringing something back for me. But thanks'

'Ok. I'll miss you tonight'

'I'll miss you too. I'll check in later if I can. Love you'

'Love you babe'

Jenna dropped her phone onto the couch, frustrated at another evening without him. Walking into the kitchen and seeing the pan of brownies she made earlier, she decided to pay him a visit at the district anyway. Erin may be bringing him dinner, but she wanted to make sure Hank and the unit had dessert too.

When Jenna arrived at the district, after slipping Trudy a brownie, she was buzzed up and was surprised to see the bullpen still empty. The light was on in Hank's office, and she hurried over, excited at the thought of a few minutes alone with her man. As she got closer, she heard a female voice coming from inside the office. She froze when she saw him hugging a woman she didn't recognize, a tall, stunning brunette. Jenna stopped quickly, just out of their sight, to watch and listen.

"I'm really glad you're here," Hank said, a big smile on his face.

"I'm glad you called. It's been awhile," the woman said.

"It's been too long since I've seen that smile of yours."

Jenna couldn't wait any longer. She had to know what was going on, so she knocked on the doorframe.

"Jenna?" Hank said, looking around the woman to see her. "What are you doing here?" he asked, walking over to see her. Jenna reluctantly let him pull her into his arms for a moment.

"I made brownies earlier, so I decided to bring them by since you and the unit were having a late night," Jenna said, holding up the container in her hand.

"I'm glad you're here. Thank you," he said, kissing her softly.

Jenna looked back and forth between Hank and the other woman. "I'm clearly interrupting something, so I'll go, and we can talk tomorrow or something."

Hank shot a look over at the other woman as he took Jenna's hand, stopping her from leaving. "Jen, I'd like you to meet Captain Olivia Benson. She's from Manhattan Special Victims Unit."

"Hi Jenna. It's nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about you," Olivia said, extending her hand to Jenna.

"Nice to meet you too," Jenna said, shaking Olivia's hand.

"Olivia came to help with the case. When I told you it took a turn, it's connected to a case her squad is working in New York," Hank said.

"Oh wow. I didn't realize there was that kind of crossover."

"There can be," Olivia said. "I've been here a few times, and Hank has come out to New York a few times as well. We've kept in touch since the first time, and we talk occasionally when we need fresh eyes on a case."

Just then, the rest of the team arrived back from their dinner break. Erin spotted Olivia and rushed into Hank's office.

"Liv! You made it," Erin said as she hugged her.

"It's so good to see you Erin," Olivia said.

"It's been way too long since you've been here. I see you met Jenna," Erin said, putting her arm around Jenna.

"Just now. I was just filling Jenna in on how we have partnered with this unit a few times."

"Olivia has been really helpful on cases, and she has been a great friend to me. She's helped me through some really difficult situations."

"I'm glad you all have her," Jenna said.

Olivia looked over at Hank. "I need to check in with my squad, so I'm going to set up in the interview room, if that's ok."

"Whatever you need, Benson. Let us know when you're ready for us," Hank said.

"Thanks," she said, excusing herself.

"I'm glad you stopped by," Erin said as she hugged Jenna. "It's been so crazy lately that I feel like I've barely talked to you. I'm sure Hank feels the same way."

"Yeah, it's been a little crazy. Hank told me you all were working late, so I thought I'd stop by for a few minutes and bring some brownies."

"Don't let Adam know you have food. Last time he hoarded everything in his desk," Erin said.

"True story," Hank said.

When Erin was back at her desk, Hank closed his office door, shut the blinds, and pulled Jenna into his arms, backing her up against the door. "I'm really glad you're here," he said softly as he kissed her deeply. Even though her mind was still on Olivia's presence, she leaned into Hank as his deep voice softly saying "I missed you," still sent chills down her spine.

"I missed you," Jenna said as he kissed her again. "I just didn't realize what I would be interrupting."

Hank pulled back to look at her. "Are you ok? You've seemed off since you got here."

Jenna looked away, not wanting to say what was on her mind and unable to make eye contact with him.

"Jenna," he said when she didn't answer.

Finally, she looked back at him. "Olivia is beautiful."

"She is. Very beautiful."

"Who is she to you, Hank?"

Hank closed his eyes for a moment, realizing what Jenna was thinking. He heard the rumors that floated around the unit every time Olivia's name was mentioned, but he never imagined Jenna would fall into that. He took Jenna's hands.

"Jen, Olivia is a very good friend. When we first met, there was a connection there, an...understanding. It's hard being the commanding officer and finding the right people to confide in, and she understands that better than anyone I know. We...can talk to each other. It's mostly about cases, but we talk about our lives too."

"Has there been...more than that? More than friendship?" Jenna asked.

Hank sighed. "There have been...moments, when things could've gone somewhere. But we've never crossed that line. It would ruin the friendship, and we agreed early on that we need the friendship more than some long-distance…thing that could never go anywhere. We have dinner and drinks when we're in the same city, and we talk when we need someone who understands."

"That's it?" Jenna asked.

"That's it."

"She's known about me?"

"She has. Erin has talked to her about you a lot, and I've talked about you too. She and I don't typically talk a lot about our personal lives, but when you and I started getting serious, I told her about you."

"She's close with Erin too?"

Hank nodded. "She is. When I met Olivia, I knew she'd be a good influence on Erin. She really took an interest in Erin and has helped her a lot. She's been through some really difficult things, and her experiences made her the perfect person to help Erin through some similar things."

"I'm glad Erin has someone like her."

Hank took Jenna's face in his hands, forcing her to look at him. "I promise you, there's nothing going on between me and Olivia."

Jenna sighed, pulling away from him and covering her face with her hands. "Ok. I'm sorry. I just...I don't do this, Hank. I don't get…jealous like this, I just..."

Hank pulled her hands away from her face, making her look at him. "Your ex hurt you. It makes sense that something like this could be a trigger. It's ok."

Jenna shook her head. "No it isn't. I have no reason not to trust you, and I'm sorry."

"We're fine, babe." Hank pulled her close again, kissing her deeply. "Now, I need to get one of those brownies before Ruzek hides them all."

Jenna laughed a little, leaning into him. "I love you," she said, looking up at him.

"I love you." He kissed her again before walking out of the office with her. They found Adam standing awkwardly outside of the office.

Hank glared at him. "Need something, Ruzek?" Hank asked.

Adam looked down uncomfortably. "Uh…I heard Jenna may have brought something?"

Jenna laughed, holding out the container of brownies. Right before he took them, she jerked them out of his reach. "Share them, or I won't bring anything else."

"Yes ma'am," Adam said.

Jenna jerked the brownies farther out of his reach. "Ma'am?" she asked. She leaned close to Adam. "Never call me that again." Just before she put the container in his hand, she held it out to Kevin instead.

A big grin crossed Kevin's face. "Told you I was her favorite," he said, smirking at Adam. "Thanks Jenna."

As Kevin took the brownies around to everyone, Olivia joined them back in the bullpen. Kevin held out the brownie container to her. "I save some for you Captain," he said.

"Thank you," Olivia said as she took one.

"Smooth Atwater," Jay said.

Al slapped his hands on Kevin's shoulders. "She's out of your league, buddy."

"Back to work. All of you," Hank said. He looked up at Olivia. "Sorry about them."

"It's fine," Olivia said as she laughed. As the others got back to work, she walked over to talk to Jenna. "Thanks for this."

"You're welcome."

"I'm glad to finally meet you. You're really good for them, both of them," she said, gesturing to Hank and Erin. "Erin talks about you a lot, and I've seen such a change in Hank, for the better. He's calmer, more relaxed. He's…happy."

Jenna smiled at her. "Thank you for saying that. We're really happy. I love him a lot, both of them."

"They love you too." Olivia looked down at her watch. "I need to get to work. I wish we had more time to talk, maybe when this case is over. I'll try not to keep him out too late."

"I'm glad I got to meet you Olivia. Don't work too hard." Jenna walked over to Hank. "I'm going to head out. I hope everything works out," she said as he took her hand.

"I'll walk you out." When they got to Jenna's car, he pulled her into his arms. "Thank you for coming by. I'm glad I got a few minutes with you," he said as he kissed her. "Are we ok?" he whispered in her ear.

"Always," she said, giving him a quick kiss. "If you manage to get away from here, come over."

"Oh I will. Bye babe."

After a few crazy days, the case finally worked out, and the unit was finally able relax a little. The night before Olivia returned to New York City, she and Hank went out for a drink, their typical routine when they were in the same city.

Hank sat down across the table from Olivia, sliding the second beer in his hand over to her.

"So…tell me what's been going on with you, Captain Benson," he said.

Olivia laughed, rolling her eyes. "Well…the captain thing is probably the biggest development. But you knew that already."

"I did. And if I haven't said it already, congratulations," Hank said, tapping his beer bottle to hers.

"Thank you, Hank. It's…kind of unbelievable."

"If anyone deserves it, it's you Olivia. Your little boy is doing well?"

Olivia smiled with pride thinking about her son. "He's…amazing. I'm incredibly lucky to have him."

"He's lucky to have you too. You mentioned last time we talked that your old partner showed up out of nowhere. How's that going?"

Olivia sighed. "Awkward. He was my best friend, practically my other half, for twelve years, and then he disappeared without a word for a decade. Now he's back."

"So where do things stand between you two?"

"He wants a relationship, more than just a friendship, but I don't know if I can do that. I can't just pretend the last ten years didn't happen, and I can't pick right up where we left off. I'm not the same person. But it's…him."

Hank squeezed her hand. "You'll figure it out. But if you decide to let him in, make him work for it. Don't make it easy for him. If you need me to rough him up a little, I don't mind."

Olivia laughed. "I'll keep that in mind."

"Don't settle for anything less than you deserve, Benson."

"I'll try," Olivia said, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I'm glad I got to meet Jenna. Things seem like they have gotten really serious between you two. Are you thinking about taking the next step?" Olivia asked.

A smile crept across Hank's face. "I plan to. I just…can't figure out the right time to ask her. I almost asked her at Christmas, but that seemed lame. I just want it to be right, and I want it to be special. She deserves that."

"Hank. If she really loves you, it's going to be special because it's you. If you love her, if you're ready, and if you think she's ready, go for it."

"I think we're ready. I think we could really have a great future together."

Olivia smiled at him. "Then I'll be expecting a phone call about your engagement very soon."
