Author's Note: Wow, y'all! I'm blown away at the response to the last chapter! I honestly thought everyone would be angry with me :) Thank you for taking time to review. I appreciate it so much!

Just a reminder for the hospital chapters, I'm not a doctor, I don't really watch Med, and the only medical knowledge I have is from early episodes of Grey's Anatomy :)

Chapter 33-We Wait and See

A few hours later, Will and the rest of Erin's medical team came out for an update. Will was surprised to see only Jay and Jenna waiting for news.

"Jay, where is everyone? I know it's been awhile, but I didn't think anyone would leave before Erin was out of surgery."

Jay stood up, anxious to hear about Erin's condition. "Sarge sent everyone back to the district to try to figure out what happened. But that's not important. How is Erin?"

Will sighed. "It's not good, Jay. She has a traumatic brain injury. There is also some swelling, so they removed a portion of her skull to allow for the swelling. They are giving her medication to hopefully reduce the swelling, and they have put her into a medically-induced coma to try to let her heal."

Jay covered his face with his hands. He knew things were bad, but he didn't expect this kind of news.

"Will she be ok? What are the chances of…of survival?" Jenna asked hesitantly.

"The next few days are critical. We don't know the level of brain activity yet, so that will determine more moving forward. If she makes it through the next few days, and if there is brain activity, they'll try to wake her up. If she wakes up, we'll know more about the level of damage."

Will stopped, letting them process the news. When they were ready, he continued. "I know it sounds vague, but brain injuries are tricky, and we really have no way to predict. Every brain injury is different. I don't want to scare you, but I do need you to prepare for the real possibility that some difficult decisions may have to be made."

Jenna closed her eyes, tears silently flowing down her cheeks. She reached over and squeezed Jay's hand. "Can we see her?" she asked.

"They are getting her set up in an ICU room right now. When she's settled, they'll let you sit with her." He hugged Jay. "We'll do everything we can."

"Thanks man."

When Will was gone, Jenna said, "I'm going to call Hank to update him and the others." Jay nodded, unable to speak, still processing.

Jenna called Hank and was a little surprised to get no answer. She called again and was frustrated to get his voicemail a second time. Surely he was waiting by the phone for an update, wasn't he? Moments later, she nearly threw the phone against the wall when she received a simple text.

'Can't talk. Working'

She debated calling again, but she knew he probably wouldn't answer.

'I just thought you'd want to hear the update on Erin'

'Just text it. I'm busy,' was Hank's response.

Jenna gripped her phone tightly. A part of her momentarily wished her hand was gripping her husband's throat. 'I'm going to kill that man', she thought to herself. She knew he was upset, but he was being so difficult. Jay's voice pulled her out of her thoughts.

"Hank?" he asked.

Jenna nodded. "He's making me crazy. Can I use your phone to call Al? Someone needs to pass on the news to the others."

"Sure," Jay said, passing her his phone.

Jenna walked to the other side of the waiting room to make her call.

Al answered the phone on the first ring. "Olinsky."

"Alvin, it's Jenna. Erin is out of surgery." She relayed all of the information Will had given them.

"Poor kid," Al said. "So what do we do?"

Jenna sighed. "We wait and see, and we just be here for her. She's going to have to do the rest of the work herself. Please let the others know."

"I will."

"And Al, if you can convince Hank to come back, that would be good. He's not talking to me, and I know Erin needs him."

"I'll do my best."

When Erin was settled, Jenna and Jay slowly walked into her room. Tears immediately came to Jenna's eyes as she took in Erin's condition. She was on a ventilator, and there were numerous other tubes and machines surrounding her, all necessary to try to keep her alive. Jay sat down in a chair on one side of the bed as Jenna sat on the other side. Jay carefully picked up Erin's hand, cradling it between his.

"Erin, it's me. Jenna and I are both here with you. You're going to be just fine." He leaned over, resting his head on the bed next to her as he fought desperately to keep his tears from falling too.

Jenna gently squeezed Erin's other hand. "Hi Sweetie. We're so glad you're still here with us. We're going to be right here with you through all of this. You rest, and then you fight to come back to us. We love you, sweet girl."

Later that evening, as much as she didn't want to, Jenna made the difficult decision to leave the hospital for the night. Jay needed time alone with Erin, and as angry as she was at her husband, she desperately wanted to curl up in his arms and hear him tell her that everything was going to be fine.

As she walked into her house, she let out a frustrated sigh when she realized the house was empty. She tossed her purse onto the coffee table and plopped down on the couch. She laid down and covered herself with a blanket. Pulling a pillow to her chest, she released all of the stress, worry, and frustration she'd been carrying all day, sobbing into the pillow. When she didn't think she had any tears left, she fell into a restless sleep.

Back at the hospital, a nurse was wheeling a cot into Erin's room for Jay. She'd encouraged him to go home, but he refused to leave her alone, especially overnight. When the nurse was gone, he moved the cot as close to Erin's bed as he could. He was disappointed that he couldn't reach her hand from the cot, but he hoped that she could sense his presence next to her. Before he tried to sleep, he stood beside her one last time. He gently stroked her cheek as he spoke.

"I'm going to try to get some sleep. I can't hold your hand, but I'll be right here beside you all night. I love you Erin." He softly kissed her forehead, and he fell asleep to the steady beat of the heart monitor.

Over the next two days, Kevin and Adam were released from the hospital, and Erin remained in a coma. At some point, all of the members of Intelligence came by to visit Erin. Everyone but Hank.

Jenna and Jay stayed by Erin's bedside. Jay took a couple of hours during the day to go home and sleep while Jenna sat with Erin. Jenna took her own break overnight while Jay was there. Hank had yet to come home, and Jenna wasn't sure she was ready to see him.

On the third day, Erin was taken for tests, leaving Jenna and Jay alone in her room. After a few minutes of silence, Jay said, "I was going to propose her tonight."

"What?" Jenna asked.

"Today is Saturday, right?" When Jenna nodded, Jay said, "I had a perfect night planned. It was cheesy, and I'm sure Erin would've pretended to hate it, but I wanted it to be special. She deserves something special for once in her life. Now, I may never be able to give her that. I may never be able to tell her how much I love her and that I want to spend the rest of my life with her."

Jenna wiped at her tears. "Oh Sweetie. Don't think like that."

"I don't want to lose her. I'm so afraid of what these test results are going to say."

"I know, but she's still fighting, Jay. She's not going to give up. She loves you too, and I'm sure she's fighting to come back to you," Jenna said.

"Do you think she would've said yes?" he asked, tears pooling in his eyes.

Jenna nodded. "I do, and I'm confident that you'll be able to ask her yourself very soon."

"Did Hank tell you that he gave us his blessing?" Jay asked.

Jenna was shocked. "No, he didn't. He really gave his blessing?"

"Yeah. I asked him on your wedding day. I know, weird timing, but we were alone, and I thought it was time."

"I'm glad you did. It will mean a lot to Erin."

Jay sat quietly for a moment, trying to gather courage to ask the big question. "Has he been here yet? I haven't seen him, but I thought maybe he'd been by during the day while I've been out."

Jenna looked down sadly as she shook her head. "No. He hasn't."

"Is he planning to?"

She shrugged. "I don't know. I haven't spoken to him since he walked out of here."

Jay shook his head in frustration. "He should be here, Jenna."

Jenna sighed. "I know, Jay. He'll be here. I know he will," she said, not entirely believing her words, but praying they were true.

When the tests were finished and Erin was returned to her room, Jay opted out of his daily nap, so Jenna stepped out for a little while. She thought she would go home for a bit, but before she knew what was happening, she was pulling up in front of the district. She sighed, resting her forehead against the steering wheel as she debated walking inside. She hadn't seen her husband since the day of the accident, and other than a couple of texts to update him, they hadn't had a conversation.

Jenna was still upset about their argument at the hospital. While she felt she probably shouldn't have inserted herself into Hank's work business, she still felt that Erin's best interest should come before anything else, and Erin would want Hank there. She knew Hank was scared of losing Erin, and he was distancing himself from the situation as an act of self-preservation, but his daughter needed him.

Finally, she summoned enough courage to get out of the car and make her way inside. She hoped she would have the words to convey what she was feeling.

"Jenna," Hank said, looking up, surprised to see her standing at his office door.

"Just making sure you're alive. I haven't seen you or heard from you."

Hank looked down, unable to meet her eyes.

"How's the case coming?" she asked.

"Working some leads. Nothing solid."

Silence filled the space between them again. Jenna wanted to reach out and shake him, scream at him, do anything to get a reaction out of him.

"Are you going to ask about Erin? Or are we ignoring that our daughter is in the hospital fighting for her life?" Jenna asked.

Hank looked up at her again. "How is she?" he quietly asked.

"She's alive, still in a coma. They took her for tests a little while ago, and results should be back later today."

"What kind of tests?" Hank asked.

"Brain activity, among other things. The tests will help decide how to move forward."

"Ok," Hank said.

"Are you going to come see her?" Jenna asked.

Hank shrugged. "Not sure what good that would do."

"Will said she might be able to hear us, might be able to sense our presence. Even if she can't, I think she'd want you there."

"Jen."

"I need you," Jenna said tearfully. "I need you there. I am so beyond angry with you, for so many reasons, but I need you there. Erin needs you there, and you need to be there for yourself."

"I can't," Hank said softly.

Jenna clenched her fists in frustration. "Hank, if you don't show up, and she dies...I don't know that I will ever be able to forgive you, and I don't think you'll ever be able to forgive yourself."

Hank watched as Jenna left his office without another word. He knew deep down that she was right, but he didn't think he could face Erin, at least not until he caught the person who was responsible for putting her in the hospital.

A few minutes later, Al stepped into his office.

"I just passed your wife. She didn't look very happy," Al said.

"She's not."

"Because you haven't been to see Lindsay. You haven't seen her, right?"

Hank shook his head. "I can't, Al. Not until we find who did this."

Al sat down in a chair in front of his desk. "Hank, you know what it's like to lose a child. We both do, and we both know what it's like to be there for our kid's last breath. You need to see her."

Hank sighed. "I know. I just…don't know that I can."

"Have you apologized to Jenna for that scene at the hospital?" Al questioned.

Hank shook his head. "I haven't done that either."

Al sighed. "Sounds like you've got a lot to work on."

"I'll work it out, Al. We just need to figure out how this happened."

Al stood up, tapping Hank's desk. "Go see your wife and daughter. I know what tomorrow is. You shouldn't be alone."

"Tomorrow," Hank said softly to himself.

Later that evening, Hank made a decision and did what he needed to do. He called his wife.

"Hi," Jenna said, answering her phone.

"Hi," Hank said. "I'm a little surprised you picked up."

"You're my husband. I'm not going to ignore your phone calls."

Hank sighed, covering his face with his hand for a moment. He could hear the hurt in Jenna's voice, and he was even angrier with himself than he was before. "I know I don't deserve anything from you, especially right now, but could you meet me somewhere? Tomorrow morning?"

Jenna hesitated, unsure how she wanted to answer.

Hank immediately picked up on her hesitation. "Please Jen. It's important."

Jenna sighed. "Ok. Let me know when and where."

"I'll text you the address. 9am?"

"I'll be there," Jenna said.

"Thank you Jenna. I…miss you, babe."

Tears came to Jenna's eyes. "I miss you too Hank."

"I love you. I'll see you in the morning. Goodnight."

"I love you," Jenna said tearfully.

When she hung up the phone, she cried into her hands. She missed Hank terribly, and hearing his voice made her ache for him even more. She didn't know what tomorrow held, and she knew he didn't deserve her help, but she would give him what he asked for. Hopefully, this would be the start of rebuilding their family.
