Chapter 49
Artemis quiver was almost empty and the incoming army was still coming strong, she pulled back another arrow and took aim, as she scanned the crowd she noticed that soldiers near the back of the army were moving away from the tower, she pulled a scope off her belt and peered past the crowd, 4 United States soldiers, Robin, and Prophet had come up on the approaching army from behind, the soldiers were firing into the throng of Citadel soldiers while Robin fought off several using his gadgets and escrima sticks, Prophet was shrouded in a dark mist, with black tendrils emerging from it and wrapping around the large Citadel soldiers.
Artemis dropped the scope to the floor and pulled a Zipline arrow from her quiver and fired it into a street light, the steel tip expanded and secured the line in place, Artemis pulled the line taunt and secured it in the building, she locked a handlebar onto the line and stepped to the edge of the window, she dove forward off the building carried quickly forward toward the ground.
Artemis released the handlebar and drove her left foot into the chest of 1 of the Citadel soldiers, she pushed off his chest and brought her right foot around for a follow up kick to the his head, his hands went up but Artemis had already let herself fall backwards out of reach, she landed on her hands before flipping to her feet a yard away, the soldier brought a frantic fist in to her left, she spun under the attack and caught hold of the large hand as it finished its arc, she pulled back hard and kicked out at the wrist, she danced away as the soldier swung the arm backwards howling in pain, the fist passed inches from her, she jerked back toward him, his attack left him exposed for a second, which Artemis took advantage of it, she brought her arms above her head and brought a metal stake into the massive aliens chest, for a second they both stood frozen in the moment before the soldier collapsed.
Kommand'r and Kori caught to keep their footing as they stood a couple feet from the Gateway, held there by steel cables attached to a harness around their waists, they extended their hands out toward the swirling tear in space, blue and orange flames shot from their palms and got immediately picked up by the Gateways pull, the flames swirled into the blackness of the void lighting it up as it slowed.
The vortex slowed but didn't stop, it continued to spin at a steady rate for half a minute before picking back up, its speed increased faster than before,
"It's opening back up" Kori shouted as the sound of the Gateway roared louder,
"It's not meant to be shut off on this side" Kommand'r said quietly before repeating it louder, she quickly began fiddling with her harness,
"What are you doing?" Kori asked,
"I'm gonna hit it from the other side, as soon as I'm through, hit it with everything you've got" Kori shook her head,
"No, we'll figure something out here" She shouted, Kommand'r finished undoing her harness,
"Goodbye" She said as she let go of the cable, Kori reached out but she was held back by the cable attached to her harness, a second after Kommand'r was swallowed by the Gateway closed.
