It isn't that Dee doesn't understand the concept of personal space, because he does, and with most people, he'll keep a more or less respectful distance. But his new partner is kinda hot, and clearly he finds Dee getting so up close and personal a bit… uncomfortable. Dee should back off a little, but… nah, where would the fun be in that?
Besides, it's a good way of testing the new kid; as a freshly minted detective, he'll have to deal with a whole lot worse than a slightly handsy partner standing too close. If this flusters him, then what's he going to be like when he has to deal with arresting aggressive suspects, drunks, stuff like that?
Then again, a guy doesn't get to be a detective without being in uniform for a few years first, so he has to know how to handle himself on the street, in which case, maybe the problem isn't that someone's getting into his personal space, but that it's Dee doing it, which could be an interesting angle to explore.
Maybe Detective Maclean is sensing the same thing Dee is, a kind of irresistible magnetic attraction to his new partner fizzing between them.
