Today Shuichi and Kokichi take a trip together and it will be adorable! Also, this might be another two-chapter one-shot (two-shot?) Because I don't think I'll be able to fit everything into one chapter. And I don't like overly long one-shots. Anyway, hope you enjoy!
All Eyes on Me Part 1
It was while they were cuddling in bed one night that Kokichi decided to spring the question on Shuichi. And it wasn't something you would normally ask while in bed.
"Hey Shuichi, will you go with me to see the circus?" Kokichi asked. Shuichi blinked at him.
"I'm kind of busy with cases," he said, "Why do you want to go to the circus?"
"Because I've always wanted to go, ever since I was young!" Kokichi sighed in a dream-like voice, "When I was a boy, my parents refused to take me, because they thought I should spend my time studying instead of on 'juvenile delights.'" He paused and grinned. "I'm lying, of course! My boss actually wants me to write a story about it. But I didn't want to go alone. It's set up about two towns over which means I'll have to take the bus."
He draped himself over Shuichi's lap and looked up at him pathetically. "You wouldn't want me to have to take the bus all by myself, would you?" he whined, "Someone might try to mug me!"
Shuichi couldn't help but chuckle. "Kokichi, you are the last person in the world who would get mugged," he pointed out. He smiled gently. "But I'll tell you what: I'll try to finish all of my cases quickly so I can join you. All right?"
"Yay!" Kokichi cheered, leaping up and hugging him, "Thanks Shuichi."
"Anything for you, my dear," Shuichi sighed.
…
It didn't take long for Shuichi to wrap up his cases. They weren't as hard as he had anticipated, so the next day he and Kokichi bought bus tickets and rode out of town towards the circus.
Kokichi excitedly bounced in his seat next to Shuichi, looking like a child going to an amusement park for the first time. Shuichi tried to ignore him and stared out the window, but it was kind of hard to ignore his boyfriend chatting happily in his ear.
Though, he supposed he should be grateful. It had been a while since he took a day off just for himself. Going to the circus wasn't the first thing Shuichi would think of, but Kokichi would probably call him boring if he did what he really did when he had a day off.
It wasn't long before the bus pulled up to where the circus was set up. People piled off and Kokichi practically dragged Shuichi off the bus.
"Isn't it marvelous, Shuichi?" Kokichi exclaimed, gesturing towards the gated tents, "I've never been to the circus before!"
"Neither have I, actually," Shuichi admitted, wrinkling his nose. Maybe it was because of the location or all the greasy food, but he didn't know it would… smell… so bad.
Kokichi had already lifted the camera from his neck and snapped a shot of the area from where they stood. "That's a keeper!" he declared proudly.
"Don't you dare take any pictures with me in them," Shuichi warned. Kokichi jutted out his lower lip in a fake pout.
"Fine!" he sighed dramatically, "But only because I love you! Now come on, let's go in!" He tugged on Shuichi's hand and dragged him towards the entrance. When they got through, Kokichi immediately started taking a million pictures of everything he could see.
"Is this how you normally work?" Shuichi asked.
"Yup!" Kokichi replied happily, "Better to have too many pictures than not enough pictures! Ooh! Shuichi! Go stand over there with the clown!"
"I told you, no pictures with me in them!" Shuichi sighed.
"You're missing out," Kokichi told him. He lowered his camera and smiled. "You know, since we're here, we may as well try out some of the attractions! Play some games, eat some food!"
"Did you bring money?" Shuichi wondered.
Kokichi frowned slightly and started patting his clothes all over. Then he took a hissing breath. "Ah, gee! No! I forgot my wallet at home!" he whined, "Looks like you'll have to spot me!"
Shuichi was not amused. "How did you pay for the bus tickets then?" he pointed out. Kokichi's frown got deeper.
"You know, you're no fun when you do that," he said, pulling his wallet out from the front of his shirt, "I was going to pay you back."
"Sure you were."
For the next hour and a half, the two of them wandered the circus, playing carnival games and eating greasy fried food. Shuichi had to admit he was having a great time. Maybe it was because he had never done anything like this before, or maybe it was because he was with Kokichi. Or maybe it was a combination of both. They even went on a few rides, though Shuichi was doubtful of their safety.
All the while, Kokichi snapped tons of pictures of everything he could see. Shuichi was sure he would run out of memory soon.
"Don't worry, Shumai!" Kokichi dismissed, "I have another memory card in case this one gets full!" Sighing, Shuichi shook his head.
"Anyway, I bet the main circus act is going to start soon," Kokichi continued, "We should get over to the Big Top and get our seats!"
"Do we have to?" Shuichi muttered as Kokichi took his hand and started dragging him towards the largest tent.
"Of course!" Kokichi scoffed, "You can't go to the circus without seeing the main act!" Shuichi sighed and rolled his eyes. He didn't get to complain more, however, as they reached the front of the tent.
They paid for tickets (Shuichi thought it was ridiculous that one had to pay for both the ticket AND the show,) and they went to find their seats. They were sitting in an area where they could easily see everything that was going on, which pleased Kokichi.
"I can take the best pictures this way!" he bragged.
"I bet," Shuichi murmured, staring wide-eyed at the stage.
It looked just how one would think a circus stage would look. It was large and round, with a dirt floor. Several nets and sets were scattered around. Shuichi figured there would probably be multiple acts going on at once.
"But wouldn't that distract from the performances?" he wondered out loud.
"Would that do what?" Kokichi asked, not looking at him.
Shuichi didn't get to respond as the lights went out and loud music started playing. Colorful stage lights started flashing around the stadium, getting everyone hyped. Beside him, Shuichi heard the rapid clicking of a camera.
"What are you taking pictures of?" he asked, "It's so dark!"
"That doesn't mean there isn't something doing on!" Kokichi exclaimed, "Aw shit! I have to change the memory card! Tell the performers to wait up a minute!"
"I warned you this would happen," Shuichi said, matter-of-factly.
As Kokichi hurriedly changed the memory card, a spotlight appeared and shined onto the middle of the arena. A man in a top hat and flashy out was there with his arms spread out and big grin on his face. Shuichi grinned and nudged Kokichi.
"Look! He's imitating you!"
"Ha ha, very funny, Shuichi," Kokichi grumbled as he fiddled with his camera.
"Ladies and gentlemen! Boys and girls of all ages! Welcome to the circus!" the ringmaster (for that's who he must be) exclaimed, "Prepare for the greatest thrills you've ever seen! Witness spectacles the like you could only dream of! See amazing feats of wonder!"
As the crowd went wild, Kokichi scoffed. "I bet they say that at every circus," he sneered.
Shuichi nodded in agreement, but he couldn't keep his eyes off the stage. Currently, a giant cannon was being wheeled out, and a tiny mousey person was proudly and eagerly waving at the crowd.
"Please welcome Daredevil Dan!" the ringleader announced, "He's going to be shot out of a real live cannon, through a burning ring of fire, and land safely on the other side of the arena!"
The crowd went nuts and Shuichi frowned. Couldn't like, a million possible things go wrong in a stunt like this? They were professionals… hopefully… so they probably did this a thousand times, but Shuichi still couldn't help but worry.
The stunt went off without a hitch, however. Dan climbed into the cannon, put on a helmet, and gave a thumbs up. He was blasted out, and as he sailed through the air, he did several twists and twirls for effect. Then he went through the ring of fire that was standing a hundred feet in the air, did a few more twirls, and landed safely in the net on the other side.
Shuichi let out a breath of relief. Was the whole show going to be this stressful? He looked over at Kokichi, who seemed to be as excited as everyone else.
"Did you get a good shot?" Shuichi asked.
"Of course I did!" Kokichi scoffed, "I never miss a shot!"
The show went on and more acts were introduced. There was a group of acrobats who formed a human pyramid without falling. There was a very buff man who lifted heavier and heavier objects. A group of clowns in a tiny car came out and started pelting the audience with pies. One girl did crazy stunts with a hoop while singing a song.
Then the trapeze artists came out. A young man and woman entered the stage, smiles on their faces. Shuichi cocked his head slightly as he watched them. The woman looked rather pale. Did she not get out in the sun that much?
He turned to Kokichi to point this out, but he was too busy taking pictures and cheering with the rest of the crowd.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please give your excitement for The Wild Flying Duo, Tara and Sara!"
Cheers erupted from the stands as the duo bowed. Then they went to opposite sides of the stage and started climbing the towering platforms. They were nearly as tall as the tent itself. Shuichi had to crane his neck to see them.
With another bow, the two took the trapeze and jumped from the platform. They swung back and forth, jumping and catching each other.
And suddenly something went very wrong.
Sara jumped from her trapeze and Tara swung to catch her. Shuichi's eyes widened with horror as they missed by an inch and Sara fell all the way down. There was silence as she hit the ground and didn't move.
Cliffhanger! I want to end the chapter here, because it feels the most dramatic. Sorry for taking so long to update anything. Life has been rather cruel to me lately, and I've lost a lot of my motivation. I'll try to write more, but I can't guarantee anything.
