Naru's apartment was located in the woods near the border of the city's bounded field. This was because Naru's father was a scientist who liked to work in seclusion. Naru's father, Ren Kaminari, no longer lived with him. He moved out when Naru was only nine years old, leaving Naru to fend for himself.

?: "Onii-chan!"

Well, mostly. As Naru opened the door to his apartment, a familiar voice called out to him. Before him stood an 8-year-old girl with black hair that had red streaks going through it. She was wearing a pink T-shirt and a white skirt. This was Touka, the Kaminari house's resident otaku.

Touka: Ka-me-ha-me-haaa!

She pretended to fire out a laser at Naru, who pretended to get hit and fell over.

Naru: "Curse you Kakarot! I will have revenge!"

This was something they would do to greet each other. Touka would pretend to throw out a random attack from an anime she watched and Naru would pretend to get hit. Today, Touka threw out Goku's signature attack from Dragon Ball Z, an anime that Touka especially liked due to Vegeta's hairstyle being similar to her older brother's. Naru eventually got up off the ground and went to greet his little sister.

Naru: "Hello Touka! Have you been working on your flute lessons?"

Touka: "Yes I have! In fact, I learned how to play the tune of Ichigo's theme song! I'll show you later."

Naru: "That's very impressive! I would love to see that."

?: "Now, now Touka, one thing at a time."

Naru turned to see a red-haired woman in her 40s with a white turtle-neck sweater standing in the kitchen. This was Naru's mother, Atsuna Chono, and today she looked like she was about to go somewhere.

Atsuna: "Hello Naru, how was your day?"

Naru: "Hello Okasan, It was alright. I barely got into any fights today, save for yet ANOTHER copycat."

Atsuna: Ara Ara, how exciting! Still Naru, it breaks my heart that my boy is out there fighting people. I wish everyone could just get along."

Naru: I know how you feel Okasan, but it has to be done to make the city safer. Also, are you going somewhere? You're wearing your sweater."

Atsuna: "Oh, I was planning to go to the shopping district to pick up a few things. Since you were there recently, do know if it is safe to go there?"

Naru: "Let's see, the shopping district is located in the Infinite Path's territory, so I doubt any weirdos will show up."

Touka: "Even if they did show up, Onii-chan is stronger than everyone. He would beat them up no problem."

Atsuna: "I hope it doesn't come to that. I don't want my baby boy getting into a fight!"

Naru: "Okasan! Stop! It's embarrassing!

Atsuna chuckled at her son's blushing face.

Atsuna: "Alright! Let's go!"

The Kaminari family arrived at the shopping district a few minutes later. Once there, went to various stores to get food, clothes, appliances, and a bunch of other items.

True to Naru's prediction, there weren't a whole lot of people who would attack a person going shopping, and even if there were, they were too scared of Naru to even think of attacking them. Even the dumbest of criminals knew that attacking Naru's loved ones meant receiving Naru's wrath. Someone had tried to do this once, only to have the fingers on his right hand amputated and his eye poked out. To say everyone learned their lesson was an understatement.

Eventually, the group stopped to take a break and dropped Touka off at the toy store to look around while Naru and Atsuna talked outside.

Naru: "...Overall, this shopping trip was really fun! With all the crime happening in the city, we don't get to spend a lot of time with each other, so I'm glad I got the opportunity to do so."

Atsuna: "I see, I'm glad to hear that!"

Naru: "Although I have to ask why we're buying so much? I mean, I get it's getting close to the holidays, but this kind of feels like overkill."

Atsuna: "Well, I wanted to buy enough things to take care of yourselves."

Naru: "Huh? What do you mean by tha-"

Before he could say another word, his mother suddenly rushed forward and hugged him, leaving Naru standing there confused.

Naru: "Okasan, what's going on? Why are you hugging me all of a sudden?"

Atsuna let go and looked at Naru with tears in her eyes.

Atsuna: "I just wanted to hold you one last time before I went away."

Naru was left dumbstruck by his mother's behavior. Why was she crying? What did she mean by "going away?"

Atsuna: "I love you, Naru."

She then pushed him to the ground before-

RATATATATATATATATATATATATAT!

…her body was filled with bullets. She was jerked around by the gunfire before suddenly going limb on the ground, blood flowing out of her corpse and into the sewer drain beneath them. Touka had come out of the store at this point and started sobbing next to her mother's body and she begged the people nearby to help them, but they ignored it. To the citizens of Sekoyoma, this was something that happened once in a while, and they had no right to interfere. While all this was happening, Naru just stood there too shaken to do anything to help. All he could do was utter a single word:

"Why?"
