A/N: Hello, again. Took a while to get this chapter out. Wrote two-thirds and realized it was missing something, so I went back added more in. Not going to lie things get dialed up to 11, real fast. I feel bad for Oscar for doing that to him. Lord knows they've done enough to him in canon, but it's for a good cause-World Building. Don't worry, I promise to make it up to him.

Chapter 3

Accusation

A few days after talking with Chief Brody, and meeting that weirdo, Ace, Oscar had recovered enough to be able to get around on his own. At least, in his own home. His aunt kept a critical eye on him all the while.

He stretched as he got out of bed and prepared for the day after putting on his clothes. He wondered what he was going to do as he did so.

He felt like he had recovered enough to be able to help out with the Harvest, but he wasn't so sure. His aunt had said nothing on the matter other than that it was still going on. He supposed that he shouldn't be going out into the heat in the fields just yet.

It was hot, and he still felt dizzy at times.

He thought about it for a moment. Maybe he could help out in rebuilding the storage warehouse. That shouldn't be too hard. Right?

He wondered about that. As he did, he felt his hands tingle for a moment. He made a fist with both hands, held it, then released. The tingling went away after that along with an almost audible green zap.

Then there was the other thing.

He looked at his hands. There was nothing abnormal about them. But he didn't believe that. Not anymore.

Over the past few days he been feeling… weird. Like there was something going on with him. It was strange enough that he had finally begun to notice it himself.

For one, he was healing far faster than usual. While physically he still felt weak, his movements were more fluid than before and there were times that the world just seemed to slow down. Once his aunt had even said that she was having trouble seeing him, like he was blurring before her eyes. She blamed it on the light.

For another, there times when he felt as well as saw what looked like sparks were coming off from his hands, or his eyes when he looked in the mirror. Green sparks. When they occurred that's when the other strange things would happen like the healing or the sudden shift in perspective.

Just what the Hell was going on with him.

He had tried to ask his aunt, Karen, about it. But she had repeatedly ignored his inquiries. Did she know what was going on?

He didn't know.

But he was going to get to the bottom it, even if it killed him.

She stood there, just in the shadows, as she watched the new arrivals enter the village's main gate. It was a group of ten men, on horses. They were clad in silvered plate armor covered by white tabards with grey borders and bore massive Longswords across their backs, or at their sides.

White Knights, from the Order of the Sacred Light.

Leading the ten knights was a tall figure clad in the same style of armor. Karen recognized what he was instantly. She had seen one of his kind before. A Paladin.

And going up to meet with them right now was "Doctor" Ace Speilli. With his were another four of the just became complicated.

She sighed and rubbed at her face as they began to disperse. She had hoped that things wouldn't come to this. A false hope it seemed.

"So. They showed up." Brody said, coming up behind her and folding his arms across the broad expanse of his chest. "Just as we assumed."

He looked at the gathering for a moment more with a grimace then turned to her and asked, "Does the boy know?"

She shook her head. "No. But he suspects something. Of that I have no doubt. He's a smart one, my little Oscar."

"Hm," Brody replied. "Have you discussed any of it with him then? What's happening, and why?"

"No." Karen returned as she continued to watching the group of religious fanatics for a moment more. Then she turned to the chief and asked, "Do we still have time?"

He frowned before saying, "I don't know. My men are no match for knight such as those. And I don't like my chances much against a Paladin of The Orders either." He scratched at his chin in thought before he commented. "I sent a letter. I've no idea if the person got it, though. Or, if they did, if they'll get here in time."

"And you trust this person?" She returned, curious, as she turned to go. "That's so unlike you."

"I do." Brody answered after a moment's pause aas he followed after her while occasionally glancing backwards towards the main entrance and what awaited there. "They've never let me down before."

"Mm," was all Karen said in turn. "Well, let's hope they make it in time then."

"Indeed." He answered as they separated at the other end of the alleyway.

As Oscar was eating breakfast he heard a knock at the door. He stood, confused, and walked over towards the door. There shouldn't be anyone coming to see him or his aunt. Her shop was down the street, after all.

Once there he asked, "Yes? Can it help you?"

There was a pause from the other side before a deep voice asked, "Is this the Pine Residence?"

"Uh, yes?" He asked in returned , still confused, but now with a sudden sense of dread tickling him in the back of his head.

Braak!

With the sudden sound of breaking wood a massive, armored hand tore its way through the thin wooden door and grasped for him. Oscar jolted backwards, throwing his arm away with a cry of shock and outrage.

He backpedaled as a trio of large, armored knights broke through the remains of the door and stalked into the room. One pointed at him and barked, "Stand fast, vermin! Your time has come!"

"Wha-what?" Oscar responded as he continued to back away from the trio. "I, I have no idea what's going on?!"

"Lies!" Barked the same one as before as he stalked up towards him. "You'll not trick me with your sorcerous ways. Filth!"

"Sorce-What are you talking about?!" Oscar exclaimed in fear as he looking up at the towering figure, his back pressed against the wall. He raised his hands pleadingly as he said, "Please, I'm just a farmhand. I don't know anything about magic!"

The man paused for a moment before him, seemingly glaring at him silently. Oscar glanced up into the dark recesses of his full-face helm before glancing over to the two others guarding the door. They stood there in silence, with their arms crossed. Then he noted the faint silvery-white glow within the visor of the man's helm before he said to him, "So. A mere neophyte, eh."

He grasped Oscar and lifted him up by the shoulders, saying with a grin, "Then we arrived just in time! Before the cursed magics could manifest properly. Good! We can still save your soul from eternal Damnation!"

The knight tucked Oscar under one massive arm and turned to walk out of the house, his other hand lightly resting on the pommel of his sword. As they started towards the door Oscar heard his aunt call out from outside, "Oscar? Oscar!"

Before he could voice a warning she dove into the building, her frizzy black hair flailing about. The other two knights immediately took hold of her as the one holding him stepped forth.

"Unhand me you brutes." His aunt commanded them as she struggled in vain. She noticed his state then and said, "As well as my nephew. We've done nothing wrong!"

"Be silent, wench." The knight to her right commanded as he pointed a finger at her struggling form. "You are being detained for housing this abomination under your roof."

"Abomination?! He's just a boy. He's all I have left after my sister and her husband died." His aunt rebuked. "What was I to do? Let him die with them?"

"You have my sympathies then. But better you had done so and save yourself from this day." The knight replied. "Continue to resist us and we will take matters in our own hands."

"Like wha-ahh!" His aunt started to say only to be knocked unconscious by the other knight. The two of them quickly restraining her unconscious form.

"Aunt Karen!" Oscar hollered in alarm. He struggled to escape the man's grasp then. "You monsters! What did she ever do to you?! Aargh! Let me go!"

"Everything." The knight holding him stated simply as he led the procession out of their home.

Oscar continued to struggle all the while. Only relenting when the knight holding him finally tired of him and processed to knock him unconscious as well

Chief Brody stalked up to his second in command as they before the guardhouse. The two glanced about before Brody said, "Coner. Gather the men and grab some weapons from storage. But it discreetly. We don't want our guests to become alarmed."

"A'right, ser," the grizzled mana said, the jagged gash of a scar on his lower face making him seem like he was perpectually frowning. He ofeten was anyway."Bu' Ah don' thin' it'll mat'er none."

Brody frowned as he looked at him and asked, "And, why is that?"

"Cau' ha' ou' boys 're runnin' aroun' for 'um." Coner replied with a sneered and motioned with his head to the other side of the town's square. "'Ooper an' his boys ha' been roundin' up all th' near'do'walls at their discre'ion."

Brody frowned at that. "Hrn, traitors then." He shook his head and spat on the ground in disgust. "Should've known it wouldn't be that easy."

He sighed and rubbed at his brow in thought. As he did another guardsman came running up to the two of them. He paused, panting, and saluted before blurting out, "They have th' Pines! They took 'em right out of their home. The both of 'em. Th' Missus an' th' li'le boy, too. Wha' do we do, sirs?"

"Calm yourself, Deitreich." Brody cautioned with a hand raised as he glanced around. Then he turned to Coner and muttered, "Gather all you can muster. Get weapons and armor, and meet back here. Do it quick. Lives are at stake."

Coner nodded before turning and rushing into the guardhouse. Brody then turned back to the younger guardsman. "Deitreich," He boomed. "Listen. And listen good."

The guardsman swallowed nervously but nodded all the same.

"Good." Brody said with a nod as he glanced up to find a team of knights headed their way. "I need you to open the Rear Gate, understand? We may have to make a quick getaway."

"Sir!" He barked as he saluted before running off the way he came.

Brody watch him go silently before turning to face the knights as they approached. He crossed his arms as he glowered at them. The lead knight lifted a hand and said, "Greeting. Are you the guard captain?"

"Chief Brody," he said after a moment of silence then nodded to the man. "An, yes. What can I do for you, Sir Knight?"

"Ah, good. Good." The man replied with a jovial expression. He turned to his fellows and nodded. They nodded back before fanning out in front of the chief of the Suisen's guard component. "We need you to gather everyone to the Town's Square, sir."

"Oh?" Brody said in reply as he eyed the men around him,and noted Cooper's men coming in behind with crossbows drawn. "And I take that this is not optional then?

The knight continued to smile, even as his blue eyes hardened, and laid a hand on the sword hilt as his side, "Indeed not, good sir."

Brody nodded quietly before saying, "Very well. It shall be done."

/ /

Oscar awake later to find himself on his knees with his arms tied behind his back in the village's central square. Beside him was Marley and five other villager who he didn't recognize.

He found that odd.

He thought that he knew everybody in town.

On his other side was his aunt, barely conscious and a further two men. Behind each of them stood more of the strange knights. Before them stood most of the populace of Suisen and a few of the town's Guard.

He was getting a bad feeling about all of this.

He noticed Chief Brody was there in the crowd, too, a frown creasing his face. As was the mayor, a greasy little man named Tobias Hawke.

In the middle of the square stood Ace Speilli and the giant knight that had broken into his home. He swallowed as he looked at the man with new eyes, clouded by fear. The knight was as tall as the chief and just as broad.

He also noticed that the man's armor was more elaborate with sigils etched into the metal. Magical, perhaps? As was his tabard, it showed a glowing sun on the face, unlike the faceless ones of the other knights. A, rank perhaps?

He didn't know.

Ace began to speak then.

"Good people of Suisen Village. I come to you now with grave news." The villagers looked amongst themselves as he said this. He stalked into the center of the square before the crowd and started gesticulating. "Your home! This lovely rural metropolis is infested! With Magic and Beast lovers!"

The crowd began to mutter amongst themselves at this. He waited a moment before holding up a hand for silence. The crowd quieted. He smiled in a somewhat gregarious manner at them before he then turned and pointed at Oscar and the other prisoners.

"Look there!" He exclaimed. "There kneels the cause of your most recent woes. Traitors! Magicians! Fornicators all!"

He whirled back to the crowd and gestured with both hands in a sweeping manner, "But! Have no fear, Good People of Suisen Village! For, I, Axle Puntura! Agent, of the Order of the Sacred Light have found found them for you."

"And, this man," He waved a hand towards the knight next to him, the sun glinting off of his armor as he strolled forwards and doffed his full-face helm. "This man will punish them for their transgressions against you, against the world!"

The newly named Agent Axle of the Order of the Sacred Light then stood back as the knight took to the stage. He turned and look out over the crowd before booming for in a charsmatic, aristocratic voice, "My name is Samuel Swan. Sir, Samuel Swan. Knight and Paladin of the Order of the Sacred Light!"

He paused to let that sink in for a moment as he turned before the crowd, letting them see his splendor. The crowd once more began to murmur. Oscar understood. Knights, of any type, were rarely seen even in Mistral, let alone way out here past the Emperor and his Shoguns' influence. A paladin was even rarer still, only existing as part of some Religious Order or institution like the Church of Blood, or something.

"And, I, swear!" Swan boomed forth before drawing his sword and turning to point in Oscar's direction, showing a gruesomely handsome face with pale blue eyes and long, flowing pale blond hair. "That none of them will go unpunished! Let the Trial begin!"

As he said that Oscar noticed a group of eight other knights who had been standing behind everyone suddenly start forcing their way through the crowd into the square, dragging one of the carts loaded down produce with for from the Harvest. As they walked in, strutted, really, one of the knights piped up. "It is as you say, Agent. The entire crop has been spoiled. Corrupted!"

Samuel raised one of his massive hands in a "show me" gesture as they made their way towards the center of the square. The knight who spoke up then grabbed one of the vegetables from the cart, a head of cabbage, and thrushed it towards the senior knight awaiting hand. He took it and observed it, his blue eyes suddenly glowing silver-white like before.

Samuel frowned then before crushing the cabbage with his hand. "Blasphemy! Corruption!" He called out then. "Meddling with the natural state of the world. As all Magi do!"

"Burn it! Burn it all, I command!" He then ordered with a wave of his hand. The knights nodded and began to strike tinder to the torches they held in hand.

The crowd looked on in stunned horror as the knights began to set fire to the cart. A few of the farmers groaned quietly as all their hard work was undone.

A larger flame could be seen in the distance then.

The pale-eyed devil then turned towards the prisoners before him. Oscar swallowed as he heard one of the two next to him begin to piss himself in fear. "Now, then." The Paladin said as he stalked towards them. "Let us begin."

He grasped Marley by the throat and lifted him up off the cobblestone ground as he said loudly to all who were gathered. "By evidence presented to us by Chief Brody of Suisen Village, and by eye-witness testimony, I, Sir Samuel Swan, do declare you, Marley Penn, guilty of association with Goblinkind." He took his sword and placed it point first at Marley's chest. A woman could be heard softly crying in the background. "For that crime, for associating such vermin, for betraying your fellow villagers, the the sentence, is death!"

He pushed the blade into the teenager's chest. Marley screamed in pain as the blade sunk into his chest before ripping out the back. He grunted and groaned in pain as Samuel held the blade there for a moment before he swiftly drew it back out and dropped the body as Marley started to fall limp.

Oscar looked on in horror as he watched Marley's eyes dart about looking for help as he tried to stymie the gaping wound below his heart. There was none. He continued to whimper with pain, the blood pooling before he finally, mercifully died, his eyes rolling back into his skull.

Before anyone could say anything, with a gesture towards the knights standing by the burning cart, they took the body and tossed unto the fire.

As that occurred a few of the villagers in the crowd tried to turn away and leave, or cry out in protest. As they did more of the knights strategically placed behind them, as well as a few of the guardsmen, drew their blades as they said, "To walk away from this means to forfeit your lives. Do you wish that?" The lead knight said with a savage grin. they shook their head in the negative. The knight nodded. "Good," he said and pointed. "Take your places then. It'll all be over soon. I promise."

"Now then," Oscar looked up to find the knight looking at him with a smile on his face. "On to the next accused."

He nodded to one of the other knights behind Oscar. The man next to him then grunted in pain as he was grabbed by the arm and back of the head and forced onto his feet. The knights dragged him over to kneel next to Samuel. He whimpered in fear.

Samuel the looked around at the crowd as he said, "I know what you might be thinking, good people! How can this be Justice! How can this be Right!"

He paused for a moment. No one spoke or made a sound besides the weeping woman and a few muttered sounds of disgust.

He nodded then and took a step forwards and spun in a circle with his arms raise overhead much like Axle had. "I will tell you why must be this way!" He then motioned to the man kneeling there before him, shaking and muttering pleas for help, even as he had publicly shamed himself by pissing all over the place. "That there is an Abomination! A lesser being! Scum! Vermin!" He pointed towards the sky.

"An affront to both Nature, and the Light!" He proclaimed. "And The God of Light would not have this thing exist! A creature made from his Brother's leavings." He glanced at Oscar then as he spat, "A sorcerer!"

"And, The Light," he lifted his sword with both hands, as the man continued to plea for mercy and aid, before swinging it down a sudden finality, "will not have it!"

The body slumped on its side, blood spurting from the severed stump. The head bounced and rolled about in a circle for a moment before stilling. The knights once more grabbed the body and tossed it into the fire.

They left the head, though.

No one said anything though a few of the families tried to back away, their horror palpable. Once more, the knights forced them back, to watch.

Samuel then turned to Oscar. He pointed at him with his bloodied blade and said, "The next accused. Bring him forth for Judgement." Two of the knights then picked him up as he struggle to get away. His weak body could do nothing as they placed him before the murderer.

He said as much to the man as he remembered Marley grayed over eyes.

"Murderer?!" The man retorted as he clasped a silver and steel-covered mitt over Oscar jaw. It popped as he squeezed it viciously so. "Because of you and your magics, sorcerer, these people must now starve come the Winter. How many of them will die because of you?"

He let go of Oscar's face as he scoffed and said, "And you call me a murderer?"

He looked to the knights standing near them and pointed at Oscar again. "Stand him up. Hold him down." He commanded. The he turned to Oscar and sneered, "I will still show you Mercy, sorcerer. Even with your blasphemies."

Samuel then closed his eyes as he gripped a talisman around his neck, and focused. A bright, white light seemed to rise off of him then. He opened his eyes and readied his sword, saying, "Now, sorcerer, you can die knowing that even now your soul will go to Heaven, unlike the rest."

As he raised the sword to cut him down Oscar closed his eyes.

"You call this a trial!?" a voice cried out in denial. He opened his eyes to find his aunt screaming as two more knights held onto her. She struggled to break free as she shouted at Samuel, at Axle, and the gathered throng of peasants. "Bullshit! No evidence, but what you say? No chance to rebuke the charges? No pleas? No mercy? Just a sentence carried out by your hand?"

She spat at Samuel's feet and sneered, "The boy is right. You're nothing but a murderer."

"Now, see here, wench." One of the other knight said as they pointed at her and started towards her. "Curb your tongue before we remove it for you! We, are doing God's work!"

"Bullshit!" His aunt said again. "There's no God in this. Only a bunch of crazed fanatics going against their own Order's Code."

The knight struck her then, backhanding her across the mouth. "Silence! You speak only poison, woman! We'll put you in your place soon enough."

He then turned to Samuel and asked, "Might I, Judge this one, Sir Swan? The hypocrisy she spew only tarnishes what we're doing here."

Samuel looked to Axle for a moment then turned and nodded after a silent exchange between the two. "Aye," he said. "But, be quick about it we must finish here and lay the dead to rights quickly if we have any hope of catching up to the Red one."

As he said that more of the knights began making their way towards the trio. As they did so the last man in the line of prisoner suddenly stood up from where he had been kneeling. Before any of the knights around him could do anything he somehow broke his bonds and began to flee.

The crowd parted for him, before starting to flee themselves.

The knights stood there stunned momentarily before Axle screeched, "After him! Don't let him escape!"

Several of the score or so of knights began to chase after the man, leaving only a few behind with the other prisoners alongside the score or so of guardsmen. "What do we do?" One of them asked.

Axle waved his arm to silence the man and said, "It matters not if the peasant witness the summation of the Trial or not. They know what we are doing, and they know it is right!" He shrugged before nodding at the guardsmen as he said, "If any speak out, we now had spies among them. They will delivered them onto us for punishment."

He smirked evilly as he turned to the leader of the guards and asked sweetly, "Isn't that right, Cooper Beltier?"

The guard, grimacing at all the spilt blood, merely swallowed and nodded back. Axle then laughed boisterously and motioned for them to carry on.

Samuel turned to him and grinned as he said, "A momentary distraction there, boy. But your sentence has been stayed long enough."

He lifted his sword overhead. "Prepare to meet God!"

"Aaaahhah!" With a scream of agony one of the knights of to the side fell over dead as Chief Brody jerked his blade out of his back. He looked around at all the Guard that had gathered and shouted, "To arms, men! Liberate the prisoners!"

He raised his sword as he said, "No more Death! Haah!"

As one the other guards that had crept in and around the square drew their blades and rushed in at the knights, and Axle. Credit to their Order, the knights recovered quickly and rushed at the guardsmen themselves as did the traitors.

Oscar watched as several of the advancing knights fell after they were suddenly pummeled by crossbow fire from above. He looked up to find Coner and Deitreich with a handful of guards armed with crossbows standing on the roof of the Guardhouse.

He smirked, thinking that he was free.

Then he was thrown to the ground. He grunted as he bounced against the cobblestone before looking up to find Samuel there, a ghastly light in his eyes. Once more, he raised his sword as he said coldly, "No, sorcerer. You do not get to go free."

Oscar raised his arms futilely, just like he had done with the goblins. Then, he felt it. Power welling up inside of him. Just like before. All he had to do was concentrate.

Green sparks formed at the ends of his fingertips. Embers glistened. Then… nothing.

He gasped at that.

Oh he thought. I guess it just a one time thing.

He looked up as the sword swung down. He started to close his eyes as a dark figure ran in front of him, shouting, "Oscar!"

Oscar heard metal hitting meat as blood sprayed over him. He opened his eyes to find his aunt, Karen there before him. She had been cut nearly in half, her one arm handing limp by her side as blood splattered by her feet, her hair no longer frizzy as it was coated in blood. Head, hanging limp. Eyes closed in death.

She had stopped the paladin's blade with he own body.

"Karen!" Oscar cried out in agony. He rushed, stumbled to his feet to get to her, slipping in blood before finally grasping at the ends of her homespun gown. "No!" He shrieked as tears gathered in his eyes. "No! not like this!"

Oscar wept, clutching at her gown, as he fell to his knees. Not like this.

"Foolish woman," Samuel spoke up then, having been stunned by her act of sacrifice himself. He gripped his blade and made to draw it out of her, and finish his work. "You might have live, if not for him."

"Oscar," Karen suddenly whispered. He jerked up at that and looked at her. She smiled at him as she raised good arm and, gathering energy, whispered, "Run."

Then she blasted Samuel-the-False-Paladin in the face, blasting him at point-blank range with Scorching Rays of heat. The knight grunted and tried to shield his face as the magic struck him.

Karen then yelled as loud as she could, "Run, Oscar! Run!"

Oscar ran!

Off in the distance at the edge of the forest lining a short figure in a red cloak watched what was occurring in the Village of Suisen below.

Fires burned in three separate locations. Screams could be heard over the flames. The sounds of blade on blade.

The figure looked up at the sky, seeing Twilight approaching. The last rays of the sun shone down on them, reflecting off Silver Eyes.

P.S. I decided to give the characters 2 attribute points for every new level. I know that's not how DnD and Pathfinder does things, but its homebrew, and I'm pseudo-DM.
