Previously I do not own Molly of Denali, or any of the characters contained within this story. Molly of Denali is the property of Kathy Waugh and Dorothea Gillim.

I look forward to the reviews and criticisms (I know there will be some). I hope you enjoy the story, and just like the cartoon on PBS Kids, I am trying to stay true to the characters as shown each and every day. I am also including real elements like they've done on the show (racism, environmental, life, and death, etc..). I hope you like this when I start to repost the chapters.

Please review all of my stories. Feedback would give me ideas I can use for not only this story but for future ones. Thank you for your time and happy reading.

My story takes place in 2021 when Molly is twelve, Tooey is twelve and Trini is nine.

Pensive Moments

Molly watched as her parents were busy making lunch. She saw how they were moving around and were able to help each other without saying a word. She noticed that her mother would give my dad a look and he would already know ahead of time what she needed or wanted. "Mom, dad. How do you know what each other wants? You aren't saying a word to each other" Molly asked confused and fascinated at the same time.

Without turning away from the stove "Schahnyaa when you have been around someone for a bit of time. You can almost anticipate their every move." She saw how her father grabbed certain spices before mom even asked for them.

"They just about complete whatever it is you're doing. Almost like they know what you're thinking. Many would call them your soulmate, but in your case. You call him dad." Layla smiled bumping Walter with her hip. He smiled as well and kissed her on the cheek.

Molly smiled as she continued to watch them. In her mind she compared what they were doing to what Tooey and her did when they were making breakfast. She noticed that like her mom and dad. Tooey and her had some similarities, but there were also times when they had to actually talk to each other to ensure they knew what the other needed or wanted.

"I wonder if we'll ever be like that?" she thought to herself. "Wonder if who will be like that?" Layla asked as she stopped by the table and placed a plate with cutlery in front of Molly. Startled, she looked at her mother. "What?" She asked, confused.

"You asked if we'll ever be like that? Who were you talking about?" Layla asked smiling. Molly felt her face turning red. "Um," She stammered just now realizing she had said that aloud.

Layla seeing her daughter's face. She just winked at her, "We'll talk after lunch just you and me, okay Molly?" Molly could only nod her head since you really didn't want to talk to her yet but realized she had no choice but to.

A little while later, once the lunch dishes were cleaned and left to dry, Molly wiped her hands using a nearby dish towel. She watched her mother also drying her hands. When she finished, she curled her finger and motioned for Molly to follow her.

Molly watched as her mother walked into her bedroom. Sher timidly entered and saw her mother on the bed, and she was sitting with both her legs on the bed. Layla patted the bed next to her.

Sighing heavily, Molly took off her sneakers and also sat on the bed, but nearer to the edge instead of right next to her mother. Rolling her eyes, Layla smiled and scooted until she was next to her daughter.

"I am going to ask you something. Bear in mind, I have an answer in mind and some situations I believe may be a part of it. I am just checking if I am right." Layla began. Molly held her knees to her chest and placed her head onto them as she was listening.

"So please nod or shake your head. I am not going to ask you anything personal, despite being my daughter. You can have a measure of privacy, you don't have to answer anything I ask, okay.?" Molly quickly raised her eyebrows and nodded her head. When she finished, she nearly fell off the bed due to sudden dizziness.

Placing her hand on her head she flopped on the bed and held her head. Covering her mouth, "I am so sorry Molly, I didn't mean for you to make your headaches worse. For that I apologize." She told her placing her hand on her thigh as Molly tried to bring the room to a halt since it was spinning in front of her.

Looking at the table she didn't see Molly's medication. "Molly, do you have your pills to help your head not hurt so much?" Slowly nodding her head, she pointed to her bag. Layla rushed over and looked inside. She pulled the pills from the bag, uncapped it, and offered one to her.

Sitting up slowly Molly looked around the room and didn't see her glass of water she usually kept on the nightstand. Seeing her looking around Layla got up and walked out of the room and returned with a thermos full of water. Molly took her pill and chased it with some of the water.

Layla waited until her daughter finished taking her medication. "Hopefully, that takes care of your pain. Again, I am sorry that happened. Please forgive me."

"You're okay, mom." Molly stated, smiling a little. "I shouldn't have moved my head like that. I guess I was a little too enthusiastic." Molly announced cradling her head and laying down. "Molly, earlier you uttered something aloud that I heard. I am simply curious about whom you were talking. Bear in mind you don't have to tell me anything if this is personal." Layla assured her.

Thinking about what her mother wanted to talk about, all of it was personal. "Mom, I have a couple of questions before I answer that one, if that's okay?" Molly asked. Layla nodded as she listened to Molly dodging her question and wanting to ask one herself. Intrigued, "That would be fine."

"How old were you when you first started dating dad?" Layla smiled and thought back to her youth. "I was around 15 or 16 when I first met your father. We didn't start dating until a little bit after we had met. What was your other question?"

Taking a deep breath, "I have someone I like. Actually, I think I may in fact love them." Layla held her breath as her suspicions were confirmed. "My heart races when I am near them, and I wonder if this is something I should let you know about. Or should I manage this on my own?" Molly held her breath as she waited for her mother to answer.

"Okay, like you I am going to restate the previous question. Who were you talking about when you asked, I wonder if we'll be like that?" Layla waited. Usually when Molly was caught off guard, she would look around the room or put her head down. Layla was extremely surprised when Molly kept looking at her. "Tooey."

Layla watched to see if Molly was trying to throw her off the trail. She sensed no deception. "Does he know about your feelings? She asked. Molly, not trusting her voice nodded slow enough not to make her head hurt worse.

"When did you realize this? Also, has anything been done that I should know about, in case Atsaq mentions it to me?" Molly shook her head slowly. "Now I am curious, what gave you the impression that you and Tooey were couple material?"

Molly smiled but maintained her gaze towards her mother. "You know I have been helping him since yesterday. Well, he commented that last night's dinner was like us being on a date." Layla nodded as she listened. "I told him that dad had made dinner, I just reheated it in the microwave and I felt that it didn't count."

"I can understand the way you were feeling and thinking. Please continue." Layla told her as she grabbed a pillow and put it under her chest and held onto it as she was laying on her stomach. "However, this morning I was thinking about what he had presumed. I woke him this morning by kissing his nose." Molly stopped talking as she gauged her mother's response.

"How did he react when you did that?" Layla asked and wondered. "He didn't wake up. He just wiggled his nose. So, I kissed him on the mouth." Layla eyebrows raised momentarily as she took in what she had been told.

"He licked his lips like he was tasting the kiss, and then opened his eyes. He expressed then that he thought he had been dreaming it. I felt good when I told him it was real." Layla smiled as her daughter bared her soul. "Now the reason I asked if I thought we would be like you and dad happened when we made breakfast together." Molly admitted.

Layla relaxed her expression as she compared what her, and Walter had been doing making lunch to Molly's breakfast with Tooey. "Molly, if you decide to have Tooey as your boyfriend, I have one provision." Molly nodded as she listened to her mother. "What would that be Mom?"

"We have had the talk with you a few years ago. If you have any questions about it, or feel uncomfortable about anything, Dad and I are here for you to talk to no matter what the subject. Nothing is off-limits. Do you have any questions right now?"

Molly thought for a moment, running everything that had happened. "No, I have everything under control. If I lose control, I'll call or ask if I am here. Okay mom?" Layla pushed herself up to a sitting position before pulling her into a hug. "I am glad we were able to have this discussion. I'll brief your dad about it if he asks." Molly nodded and stood from the bed.

Layla threw the pillow she had been holding at Molly. Watching as her mother was getting up, she was ready for it. She caught the pillow and then placed it back on the bed after she straightened the bedspread.

"I love you mom, thanks for not blowing a gasket." Molly mentioned as she smiled. Reaching over and pulling her into a hug, "I love you too, and I am glad you have a boyfriend. I am also glad it is someone that would do everything to protect you, since I know you'd do the same thing for him. If the videos we had been receiving were any indication."

Molly just smiled as they walked back into the living room. "Molly I'm glad you're back. Trini just video called from the hospital." She walked over and picked up the computer, placed it on the table and opened the screen.

* A few minutes earlier *

"Ms. Mumford, Ms. Mumford, Trini." Trini thought she was dreaming when she abruptly opened her eyes and noticed that the nurse was standing in front of her holding a laptop.

The nurse smiled, "I am sorry to wake you, but the laptop just became available. I am sorry it took longer than usual." She mentioned placing the laptop in her lap as she sat up from her reclined position.

"Thank you, ma'am" Trini acknowledged smiling. She then dialed the number for the Trading post and waited until the call was answered. "Denali Trading Post. How can I help you?" Walter appeared on the screen. "Hey Walter, how are you?" She asked.

"Oh, hey Trini, I am doing well, hope you're feeling better." Trini nodded and smiled. "I am definitely better, thanks for asking. Is Molly or Tooey there so we can talk?" Walter looked around, "She was here a few minutes ago. Her and her mother are having a talk."

Trini wondered if their earlier conversation had something to do with the talk she was having. "Hang on, here they come." Trini got more comfortable. "Molly I'm glad you're back. Trini just video called from the hospital." She watched as the computer was moved; she knew this because the room where Molly was bounced until finally settling down again. She was at the dining room table because the kitchen sink was behind her.

"Hey Molly." Molly smiled, "Hi Trini. Ready to come home tomorrow? "You bet 'cha, I am so ready to be back home. I miss Four-Spots, the chickens and especially my friends."

"I know, every time I have been over there Four-spots comes to me, but then looks around for you. I bet he'll lose his mind when he sees you in the morning. "Molly told her smiling again.

"Molly, can you please go to your room. I need to ask you a question, actually several of them? Trini implored her. Seeing the seriousness in her tone and expression. "Okay, give me a sec." Trini saw the laptop being picked up again.

"Mom, I'm going to go to my room. Is that okay?" She heard being asked. "Sure honey. Remember you need to go back to Trini's place and then to Atsaq's, and help Tooey, since Atsaq will be leaving in the morning to prepare for homecoming." As she listened, she smiled, then waited patiently for Molly to come back on.

Molly walked into her room and placed the laptop on the side table where she usually streamed her VLOG. Opening the top Trini came into view. Trini knew she was in Molly's room because she saw the big M that was hung up behind her.

"Molly, have you ever known anyone accused of wanting to kill themselves?" Molly could see the apprehension in Trini's face. "No, I have never heard of anyone wanting to do that, why?"

"A boy named Robbie, was here in the hospital. He accidentally fell into the river in Nenana. They were watching him until this morning, and he was released a little bit ago. One of the things he told me was that they want him to see a psychologist because they think when he fell under the ice, it was intentional." Molly covered her mouth.

Molly had no idea what to say or what to think. When it came to racism, she had her mother, father, and grandfather to talk to because they had to deal with it when they were kids. She was not sure this was something they had ever had any experience in.

Trini watched as Molly went through a gamut of emotions. They were clearly reflected on her face. "I had no idea what to say when he told me either."

Trini softened her expression, "That's what's been going on here. What's been happening with you on the Tooey front?" She inquired smiling. Molly maintained her gloomy face, and just like Trini brightened a little before answering. "I just had a talk with my mother before you just called about that."

"Did you get in trouble because of what happened when you were with Tooey yesterday?" Trini asked, feeling bad for Molly. "Actually no. I now have a boyfriend. Mom was happy for me because it was Tooey." Molly had a dreamy-eyed expression on her face.

"How did you know that you two are now boyfriend and girlfriend?" Trini asked puzzled. "I kissed him, and he kissed me." The look on Trini's face was priceless. Trini got herself under control, "Tell me everything. Now."

As she was preparing for another session of baring her soul. She watched as Trini got more comfortable and even pulled the blanket up to her chin. She also saw her place the computer right next to her face as she was watching her.

"I'll try to make this quick since I have to go to your place and take care of the animals again. Then I have to go to Tooey's since his mom is going there to get you discharged and back home to Qyah." Molly grinned, placing her arms onto the table and laid her head down mimicking her friend.

Trini beamed when Molly copied her. "Do tell, what have I been missing?" Trini inquired quizzically. "You sure you don't want to wait until tomorrow, I can tell you then?" Molly pleaded as she grinned. Trini shook her head, "You're not getting off that easy Mabray. Spill It."

"Nothing much to really talk about. Just the same old, same old." Trini just leveled her gaze at Molly. "Molly. Don't mess with Texas. I want to hear everything." Trini told her pointing at the screen. "Okay, if you really want to hear the boring details."

Molly again got comfortable and began her story again with a few more details than she included with her mother. "When we woke up this morning, I thought he looked cute when he was in bed sleeping. So, I kissed him on the nose." Trini smiled as she pictured Tooey sleeping and Molly placing a kiss on his nose.

"He didn't wake up immediately, so I kissed him again and this time I did it on his mouth. He licked his lips, like he was tasting the kiss. I smiled when he did that. A moment later, he opened his eyes and asked me if it was real or a dream. I told him it was real."

"Aww, so cute. What happened next?" Trini urged her. "After that he got up. I helped him to the bathroom. While there we brushed our teeth, and it was actually different but fun to have someone there to spend the time with." Molly declared smiling again.

"Based on how much you have been smiling since we've been talking. I think you looked forward to helping him." Trini observed as she joined her in smiling. "Well, since we said we love each other, it kind of makes each new thing more special because someone else is joining you and enjoys your company too."

"I know I haven't lived in Alaska all of my life, like you and Tooey. I have the same feelings for you and Tooey as well. I love you both. You're both my best friends. You were the first to welcome me here, after insulting me first. Since then, I forgave you. However, you learned not to mess with Texas." Trini told her grinning.

"We just made a cultural mistake it can happen to anyone. I mean it happened to you. You thought we lived near polar bears-" Molly stopped as Trini yelled out. "Stop changing the subject. What happened next."

Blushing, "I helped him downstairs and then left to your place to take care of the chickens, and Four-spots. When I was done, I came back to his place and we both made pancakes, and reindeer bacon. I helped him like mom and dad help each other when they are cooking. I watched them this afternoon and said kind of aloud that I wonder if Tooey and I were like that this morning."

"Why did you suddenly get sad. A moment ago, you said this was a good thing, what is making you sad about this?" Trini wondered aloud. "Mom heard me say it. I thought I was thinking it and didn't realize I said it. She told me we would be talking after lunch. She asked me who I was talking about, and I said Tooey."

"Oh, so she doesn't know any of the other details about what happened yesterday or today. Just what you mentioned to her." Molly nodded her head slowly, "Yep."

"That is so cool, anything else I should know about the new relationship you and Tooey are having?" Molly shrugged but smiled, "I threw up, after breakfast." Trini sat up a little more, "This is getting better and better. What caused that?"

"The symptoms of the concussion I had been feeling the last few days caused me to get nauseous. Tooey got sad and thought it was breakfast that caused me to throw up. I reassured him that it was something else and not the food. He didn't feel so bad afterwards."

"That's good, it might have made me think it was something I did if you had thrown up after eating something I made." Trini admitted. "After that, I helped him into the bath, then Atsaq arrived from the hospital, and I went home for lunch.

"I need to leave for your place in a few. Got some chickens and a dog to take care of." Molly said standing up. "Okay, we'll talk some more later. I need to get the laptop back to the nurse, since there is a waiting list. I'll see you all tomorrow." Trini told her waving.

"One more thing. Tell Tooey I also love him, but not in a girlfriend kind of way." Molly nodded, "Will do, and I know you don't have those feelings for him. I do, however, know that you care for him just like he cares for you. Have a good night and get some rest. Bye." Molly said waving as she signed off the computer. She returned the laptop computer to the living room.

"How is Trini doing? Is she ready to come back home tomorrow?" Layla asked, putting her book down. "Mom, she is so ready to come back home. I think of all of the things she is missing right now, besides her friends is the chickens and her dog Four-spots." Molly relayed as she stopped by the steps.

"Don't forget to take your bag again, Atsaq will be leaving early, and I have several flights to make from the morning until the evening as well. Don't forget your medication or your slippers." Layla announced picking up her book again and began to read."

"I won't." Molly said. walking back into her room. Seeing her bag, she replaced the pills she needed. Looking inside she saw her slippers were already in there. She walked over to the dresser and pulled out another pair of undergarments for when she showered. She also included her usual pajamas of a puffin and selected a pair that had a picture of a bald eagle in flight.

Having a love of birds, she had pajamas with puffins, eagles, hawks, and one that she recently received from Aunt Merna, with a raven on the front. Seeing them she thought back to the family trip to Old Crow, and how Raven led them and kept them safe despite a few hiccups along the way.

Returning the bag to her shoulder, she walked back to the stairs. While waving, "Bye mom, bye, dad." she descended the stairs and put on her parka and gloves.

She walked to Trini's place and fed, watered, and cleaned their roosting boxes before going back out into the cold wind. "You guys are lucky Trini put that heater in here. You would be frozen chickens if she hadn't." Molly said shivering, despite the heat of the coop.

She then fed and walked Four-spots around the property a few times before she started to lose some heat and felt a little cold. Kissing him on the forehead, she left some more food and water for him inside the house. She also put down some dog pads just in case. Closing the door, she made her way to the Ookami residence.

As she approached, she almost walked to the door and opened it. Remembering that Atsaq was home, she removed her glove and knocked. Hearing footsteps, Atsaq opened the door, and beckoned her to enter. She then quickly closed the door to conserve as much heat as she could inside the house. After entering she immediately removed her parka and hung it on the hooks right beside the door.

"Hi Atsaq," She noticed that Tooey was already downstairs, and in the dining room. She pointed to Tooey. Atsaq nodded. "Thanks." She walked over. Tooey turned when the door opened and noticed that Molly was back from her home and Trini's place. He smiled and pointed to the seat located next to him.

Before she could sit down, Atsaq began speaking, "Molly, I could use your help with the dogs, would that be, okay?" Molly turned, "Sure Atsaq, I am at your disposal. I can help with whatever is needed." Atsaq beamed, "Thanks Molly, I'll let you know when I'll be doing that. Okay?"

"Sure." Molly said. 'Have you already had lunch, or can I make you something?" Tooey was in the middle of one of his sled dog sketches. "I just finished about a half hour ago. Mom made some sandwiches. I think we still have some more of the meat and cheese if you want one." Tooey told her, looking towards the kitchen. Seeing everything was put away he looked at his mom.

She smiled again, "Are you hungry Molly or did you already have lunch?" Molly watched as Tooey was doing the border of one of the sketches, "No, I'm good Atsaq. I ate before I went to Trini's place about an hour or so ago. Thank you anyway Tooey for offering." Molly grinned watching him drawing.

Tooey returned the smile. "I'll be upstairs if you need anything little wolf." Atsaq said climbing the stairs. "Okay, mom. Molly is here if I need anything. I can ask her so we're not bothering you since you've been back and forth to the hospital several times this week because of us." Tooey countered.

"It's my job little wolf, I am the doctor of this village. Someone has to keep everyone here in one relative piece. Especially the kids." Atsaq mentioned disappearing up the stairs. Molly and Tooey laughed when Atsaq closed the door to her bedroom.

"These look nice Teekkone. Are we due for another issue of the Denali Defender? Without looking up, "I am just drawing them for our next issue. I figured since we're together, we can get a head start on it."

Molly's eyes shined when he talked about their comic superhero. "You're right Teekkone, we haven't made an issue for January yet. Good thinking." Molly said excitedly in her seat.

"Do you want to use markers, or colored pencils?" Tooey asked pushing the completed ones in front of her?" She stood as she was thinking, "Colored pencils, the markers bled through and ruined the pages underneath. It also took time to dry the last time we tried them. Remember Teekkone?" Molly called as she reached the steps.

"True, the pencils are in my desk, in the front drawer." Tooey shouted darkening the outlines a little more. "Got it." Molly acknowledged. She opened the door to the bedroom, Atsaq opened hers at the same time. "Did Tooey call for me?" Molly stopped long enough, "No, Atsaq he was telling me where the colored pencils were. Sorry if it bothered you." Molly sheepishly said.

"Oh, okay Molly it's fine. I'm going to take a nap. Get me if you need me." Atsaq mentioned as she yawned. Molly seeing her also yawned, "See what you started." Both smiled as her yawn ended.

Molly walked into the room and opened the drawer of the desk. She pulled out the pencils. Tucking them under her arm, she returned to the living room. Molly and Tooey colored the drawings, as well as outlined the new issue of the Denali Defender.

A few hours later, they both looked at the clock. "Are you hungry? Can I help you with anything?" Molly asked. Tooey watched as she was putting the pencils back into the case.

"Molly, can I ask a question?" Molly stopped gathering the sheets and looked at Tooey. "Sure, what's up?" she asked. "I am a little hungry, can you check on mom? Ask her if she wants anything. If she does, we'll make dinner for her. I know she's been back and forth to the hospital because of us."

Molly nodded her head, standing up. "I can do that, but what do I do if she is asleep?" Tooey thought for a sec. "If she doesn't answer, then we'll let her sleep. We'll make some dinner and prepare a plate for her to have when she wakes up. Is that okay?" Tooey smiled.

From the stairs, Molly stopped at the landing. "Okay, let me find out if she's awake or not. Be right back." Tooey watched as she disappeared upstairs. Tooey moved the chair away from the dining room and rolled himself to the living room. Tooey looked up and saw that Molly was returning from upstairs. He noticed she was tiptoeing from upstairs to the living room.

Smiling, he mouthed the words, "She's asleep?" Molly acknowledged by nodding her head. Molly walked over, turned his chair, and pushed into the kitchen. "What do want to make for dinner Teekkone?" She asked from behind him. Smiling Tooey leaned back in the chair, "Let's look in the fridge Shaeeyaa, and see what we have. The deep freezer is outside if we need other ideas." Molly smiled broadened when she heard his nickname for her.

Trini turned off the television that was in her room. Looking at the window all she saw was darkness. "I can't wait to get back home tomorrow. I miss Four-spots, and Dolores, and the other chickens, and Molly, and Tooey and the others." She thought to herself. Looking at the recliner, she knew dad was not there. He left a little bit ago.

I guess he was hungry and wanted to get something I wasn't eating. Trini wondered as she looked at the remnants of her dinner, which was a potato-less caribou stew, ground corn chutney and dinner rolls. She liked it but she missed some of the foods she could find in Qyah.

"I am glad I was able to achieve two things in my life. Going to a hospital and breaking a bone. Now I am over it and want to go back home" She again thought to herself.

The events of the day waited until this moment to intrude on her thoughts. "Talking to Molly was good. It seems her relationship is changing in a good way. I'm fairly sure they will make a good boyfriend/girlfriend team. At least from what I have seen of them." She remembered smiling. Her smile didn't last exceedingly long since the other things that had happened came into her mind.

'Robbie." She whispered, why is he in my mind so much right now. I think it might be because of him mentioning something I would never have thought of. Since he did mention it. I am thinking about it."

Sitting up, she pushed the covers off and put on her slippers. Seeing the phone plugged in beside the recliner. She picked it up. It was completely charged. She removed the plug and got back into the bed with the phone in her hand.

"I wonder if I can find something about what Robbie had been telling me about. There should be some information on what a psychiatrist or psychologist does. I don't remember which one he mentioned." She thought as she was typing in her question.

After a few seconds, the answer to her question appeared on the screen.

psy·chi·a·trist, [səˈkīətrəst, sīˈkīətrəst, Noun

a medical practitioner specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.

"So, a psychiatrist treats people with mental illness. If Robbie has mental illness. Why did they let him go home?" She thought to herself as she was reading some of the examples given as to what this type of doctor treats.

A few moments into her reading Daniel entered the room and was smiling. "Hey Texas, what are you up to?" He asked sitting in the recliner. Trini looked from the phone at her father and back down. "I wonder if this is something I can talk to him about." She thought.

"Did Molly or Tooey call while I was gone?" Trini shook her head as she lowered the phone to her lap. "Dad if someone has mental illness, why would they let them go home? Aren't they still sick?" She asked, watching him.

Daniel sat up in the chair. Running his fingers through his hair, he sighed softly. "Trini, mental illness is not like a cold. It's basically something wrong with a person that doctor's feel can't be cured with just medicine."

Trini wondered why her father got sad all of a sudden. "Why not? When I am sick or hurting, you and the doctors here gave me medicine and I feel great and am going home in the morning." Trini smiled.

Daniel returned her smile. "Yes, you are right. However, that type of illness needs to be handled carefully because it can lead to more issues for the person they are trying to help. Do you understand, Texas?"

"No, I don't. When I get back home and the snow clears. I'll look this up at the library. Okay, dad?" She asked him. "Sure thing. If you need help just ask and I'll help you find what you need." Daniel offered.

Author's note: I am not turning this dark. I am just interjecting reality into the story. Just so, the kids deal with real life things, like when Molly and Tooey dealt with forms of racism and misinformation in the episode "Molly & Elizabeth." If there are any concerns, feel free to send me a DM. Hope you are liking the story.
