Chapter 107: Crybaby
Flashes of black and white. A coppery smell.
A body on the ground in front of him, with ten puncture wounds to the midsection.
Blood on his ten black claws. He feels woozy.
He couldn't see the victim's face. The person was face-down, sprawled out in the alley. But he didn't need to see it. He knew who it was in his head, gut, and heart.
The person was a person. Human. An Earthling.
This was Earth.
He wasn't a person. He was an alien. The alien, and the alien, spiked back hunched over the fallen human.
The scent of this blood was unmistakable.
Yuhi…
No…No, no, no, no, no, no! CHUPAAAH!
Chupataro started, his claws tearing the blanket as he woke up from the nightmare.
…
For a woman who had a part of her brain removed by the leader of the Rovian Bandits (now the Rovian Currific Workers), Hottenmeyer showed no loss of function. Making no reference to their past antagonism, she approached Chupataro at the gate to the Ryugu mansion, and bade him come inside.
The dining room had high-arching windows, a small table, and tall chairs lit mistily by spherical lamps hanging down off the chins of gold dragon statue heads. Rainbow coral grew in three solid gold fish tanks, and a wall scroll illustrating twin dragons climbing into the heavens decorated the wall behind the tank furthest from the door.
Chupataro swore he'd walked into the undersea dragon palace in that Earth fairy tale.
"Phaser-sama. Tremolo-sama. I regret having to interrupt you during breakfast, but you have a guest," Hottenmeyer stated reservedly.
Phaser didn't put down his coffee.
"Chupataro?" Tremolo put down his white rice. "Come to bother Niisan to use MIK's communication equipment to contact Valvelgear? It's only been a day since Yudias and the others left Earth."
"Tremolo, we need to talk, chupa."
The younger of the Ryugu siblings excused himself from the table, taking Chupataro where they could chat privately.
"What's so vital you're here this early, Chupey?"
Chupataro didn't mince words. He gave it to Tremolo straight. The first he'd disclosed the contents of Yuga's video message, since Yuga mailed it to him.
"Yuga told you that? He really told you that?"
"On tape, chupa."
"So you believe you're the alien Yuga said was going to murder Yuhi, and that's why you couldn't go with them to space? I'm pretty sure Yuhi would have something to say about that."
"It doesn't matter, chupa. All that matters is Yuhi is away from Chupataro, cabra."
"You don't seriously believe you have it in you to kill Yuhi, do you?"
"Chupa would've killed YOU, chupa!"
"Yeah! Because I was a monster and tried to keep you and Yuhi apart! And you were protecting him! How the hell can you harm Yuhi when you're the one protecting him?"
"It makes sense, chupa! Yuga already decided to abandon hope of returning to his time, and he'd already changed the past with Rush Duels, chupa! Why not stop his ancestor who he knew was going to be murdered from being killed, cabra?"
"No! No, it doesn't make sense! Stopping his ancestor from being murdered by setting up his ancestor and his ancestor's killer? That's crazy talk! You're crazy! How can you trust this? It came from Shewbahha, didn't it?"
"What do you have against Shewbahha, chupa?"
"He's a Dragonbuster! He eats space dragons! My kind! MY KIND! Just thinking about him wasting Niisan's hard-earned scales, I…" Tremolo gagged.
"You're talking to a chupacabra who keeps bags of his boyfriend's blood in the outdoor refrigerator downstairs, chupa."
"Point is, you don't know it's actually Yuga in the video! When is telling anyone anything the Ohdo Yuga way?"
Tremolo had a point. The Sevens had doctored footage of Tremolo to make it look as though Chupataro and Badlove got carded. It wasn't inconceivable the footage of Yuga might similarly be doctored.
"You know you're not capable of doing that to Yuhi."
"Before Chupa met Yuhi…" Chupataro shook his head. "Chupa can't say what Chupa would or wouldn't have done, chupa!"
"You're serious."
"Rush Duels have the power to change people, don't they, chupa? Zuwijo would have enslaved humans to steal their Earthdama, if he didn't have Rush Duels to moderate his anger, chupa!"
"No, not if he didn't have Rush Duels. That was YUDIAS. And you have YUHI."
"If it's true…If before Yuga created Rush Duels in this era, Chupa was originally meant to do that to Yuhi…"
"What do you want me to do about it?"
"Help Chupa find out if that's what was meant to happen, chupa!"
"Why me?"
"As a friend, cabra!"
"Friend…The last time you called me that, you left me for dead. You want to talk about murder? We literally attempted to murder each other!"
"And now we're friends, chupa!"
"Even if you were originally going to murder Yuhi, that history's gone now! You have a kid together!"
Damamu's sparkly eyes sparkled in Chupataro's recollections.
"If Yuhi were here, he'd tell you you're being an idiot."
"Chupa?"
"Do you love Yuhi or don't you?"
"Of course Chupa does, cabra!"
"Then quit asking yourself what ifs about a past that doesn't exist anymore. You know this you – the you sitting here right now – would never do that to Yuhi! Never, Chupabitchy!"
"Chu…Chupabitchy? H-how long have you been holding that one in, chupa?"
That's what Tremolo said, Chupabitchy. Don't you question him.
"Is that the tape?"
"It is, chupa. Why, chupa?"
"These letters and numbers on the label…"
"What about them, chupa?" Chupataro thought nothing of them.
"Latitude and longitude! They're coordinates! Coordinates, Chupataro!"
