Chapter 8: The Path Forward
Adam took a deep breath, his gaze shifting between Blake and Yang. The tension in the air was palpable, but his expression was resolute.
"We can't stay here," Adam said, his voice firm but calm. "Venus isn't a place for New Lights. The Vex, the Fallen—they're relentless. You need to get to the Last City."
Blake's eyes narrowed. "The Last City?"
"It's the only safe haven left," Adam explained. "It's where the Guardians gather, where the Light is strongest. You'll be safe there, and you'll have the chance to learn what it means to be a Guardian."
Yang clenched her fists, a flicker of flame dancing in her eyes. "What about you? Are you coming with us?"
Adam hesitated, the weight of his past hanging between them. "I'll get you to the City. After that… we'll see."
Blake stepped forward, her voice soft but determined. "Why are you helping us, Adam?"
He looked away, his jaw tightening. "Because I've made mistakes—mistakes I can't take back. But maybe helping you now is a step toward making things right."
Yang exchanged a glance with Blake. The distrust was still there, but so was the understanding that they couldn't do this alone.
"Alright," Blake said finally. "Let's get to the Last City."
Adam nodded, a faint glimmer of relief in his eyes. "We need to move fast. The Vex won't give us much time."
Blush's light pulsed softly beside them. "I'll guide us through. Stay close."
Adam turned to Nikko and Flare, his brow furrowing. "How the hell did you two end up on Venus, anyway?"
Nikko's eye glowed faintly. "We were given passage by a Guardian fireteam. They were scouting the remnants of the Vault of Glass."
"That was a few years ago," Flare added. "They brought us along in case they found any lost Light. Once they finished their mission, we stayed behind."
Adam let out a slow breath, shaking his head. "Well, that explains it. But staying behind on Venus? You've got more guts than sense."
Nikko's light flickered with dry amusement. "Sometimes that's what it takes."
Adam smirked, his expression softening for a moment. "Fair enough. Now, let's move before we run out of time."
They made their way through the dense Venusian jungle, the air thick with moisture and the hum of alien life. After what felt like an eternity of weaving through twisted vines and metallic ruins, they emerged into a clearing.
A ship sat in the middle of the clearing, its triangular nose pointing skyward. Rectangular engines jutted out from each wing, their surfaces battered and worn. The faded paint gave the ship a grayish-brown hue, but patches of old red paint still peeked through the grime and wear, hinting at its former glory.
Blush hovered closer, scanning the vessel. "Looks like it's seen better days. But it should still fly."
Yang whistled softly. "It's ugly, but if it gets us out of here, I'm not complaining."
Adam nodded. "It'll do. Let's get aboard and get out of here before the Vex find us."
The group moved quickly toward the ship, the sense of urgency pressing them forward. This was their chance, and they couldn't afford to waste it.
As they climbed into the ship, Adam slid into the cockpit and began flipping switches, bringing the engines to life with a sputtering roar. He glanced over his shoulder at Yang and Blake.
"Put on the environmental suits," Adam said, his tone serious. "I'm not sure if I ever fixed the seals on the cabin, and I don't think you'll like suffocating in space."
Yang raised an eyebrow. "Great. Real confidence booster, Adam."
Blake didn't hesitate, already grabbing one of the suits. "Better safe than sorry."
Yang sighed and followed suit. "Fine. But if I have to wear this thing, you'd better make sure we get off this rock in one piece."
Adam smirked faintly, focusing back on the controls. "I'll do my best."
Blush's light pulsed reassuringly. "We've come this far. We're not stopping now."
As Blake and Yang secured their suits, a sudden realization washed over them. Blake's eyes widened as she looked out the viewport, taking in the alien landscape of Venus. Yang's expression mirrored hers, her mouth opening slightly in awe.
"We're on another planet," Blake whispered, her voice filled with wonder and disbelief.
Yang glanced at the sky, the heavy clouds and strange golden light unlike anything she'd ever known. "And we're about to leave it… to go to another one."
For a moment, the enormity of it all sank in. The world they knew was far behind them, and a universe of endless possibilities lay ahead. They were no longer just fighting for survival on Remnant—they were part of something much larger.
Blake took a deep breath, her eyes shining with a mix of fear and excitement. "We can do this."
Yang nodded, a determined smile spreading across her face. "Yeah. We can."
Adam's voice broke the moment. "Strap in. We're leaving now."
The ship's engines roared to life, and the clearing began to blur as they lifted off, heading toward the stars.
