The last few weeks of training before the big day were quite rigorous for the three heroes in the making. Not only did they have to perfect their sword fighting skills, but they also had to learn how to ride horseback on the royal Ponytas. Of course, this meant learning how to tame them and gaining their trust well enough, to be able to mount them, without getting burnt. Ash was a natural at it and found it fairly easy to bond with his Ponyta, but Brock and Gary struggled a little, before eventually catching up. This was going to be like no other job the boys had ever done before. They had to be fearless. They had to be loyal. And above all - they had to do whatever it took to protect the princess. They were indebted to her for as long as they remained her personal bodyguards, but Ash even more so. Ash was forever attached to her, regardless of how long he served her.

It was 7am, as Serena and Shauna walked down the palace steps with their luggage. The boys were already outside and walked towards them. Pikachu was joining them today, perched in his usual position on Ash's shoulder. The boys took a quick glance up, to make sure there weren't any more surprise rocks about to tumble down. The boys had already surveyed the area fully, though, so there was no sign of any suspicious activity. At least not for now. After a last double check, the boys bowed to Serena and offered to take the bags. Serena accepted their offer and walked over to the royal carriage. Ash looked over at her, hoping to at least get a smile from her, but she seemed to be avoiding him, as she kept her head down and entered the carriage. Ash's heart sank, but he still had a job to do, so he soldiered on and continued to carry out his duties. Even if it wasn't his job, he'd still insist on escorting Serena to Shalour City. There was no way he would let her go without proper protection, even if she was giving him the cold shoulder currently. But despite her change in attitude, Serena still couldn't resist a quick look out of the back window, out of the corner of her eye, to get a last glimpse of Ash.

Ash and Serena hadn't talked much since their big moment in the secret room. Of course, they had exchanged a few words since then, but it was all purely professional. It was tearing Ash apart, not being able to have any more quality time with Serena. And it was tearing her apart too, even if she wouldn't admit it to herself. Yet, Serena figured she had to try to move on anyway. It was proving an impossible task so far, but Serena believed it was for the best. The boys finished loading their luggage and then Brock and Gary saddled up on their Ponytas. Someone had to let the girls know that they were ready to leave, though. Ash knocked lightly on the side window. Serena's heart leapt in her mouth. Why did it have to him? Shauna opened the carriage door.

'We're ready to leave now, Your Majesty. Are you ready?'

Serena's reply was delayed a little, as she just stared at Ash blankly. It would have been so much easier to move on if he wasn't so frustratingly handsome. But the reality was, he was literally perfect for her. In every way possible. Shauna nudged Serena for a response.

'Oh, apologies. Yes. Yes, I'm ready.'

'Okay. Just sit tight and don't worry about a thing, Your Majesty. We'll get you to Shalour City nice and safe. You have my word there,' said Ash.

He tipped his hat and marched on with a serious expression on his face. Serena gave a stern nod, but internally groaned at how hot that just was. She could tell he was taking this very seriously and would do absolutely anything to ensure her safety. And that meant everything to her. Ash quickly saddled up on the leading Ponyta. The boys pulled on the reins to get the Ponyta moving and then they were off. The journey would take a whole day and they were due to arrive in Shalour City by midnight. Upon arrival, they would be met by Lady Korrina, who would host them and give them their own quarters to sleep in overnight. And then the next day, they were to discuss important Shalour City affairs, with other nobles of the city, which required Serena's presence and approval. So everyone was in for a long journey and an eventful couple of days ahead of them.

Everything ran smoothly for the first couple hours, but Serena was unusually quiet, which was worrying Shauna. She asked if Serena was okay, only to get a blunt response. Serena lied and said she was just tired, when really she was not okay. Not at all. Serena could usually tell Shauna anything, but not the dilemma she was suffering through right now. At one point, she opened her mouth to speak, feeling that Shauna might just understand and be able to help. But she decided against it and just turned to face the window instead, with her head resting in her hand. She almost started crying, as she watched trees and Pokemon flow by. It was eating her up from the very center of her heart. Shauna, of course, did not know Kanto Boy was Ash yet, so she was none the wiser up until this point, about how her best friend really felt about him. There were little signs here and there, but not enough to make her question their relationship. Shauna looked over at Serena and wondered how she could cheer her up. Then she got an idea and remembered that she packed some food with her in her bag. She pulled out some macaroons and offered them to Serena. Serena was grateful for the distraction and gladly shovelled a few down her mouth. Shauna knew her well and she definitely needed some comfort food right now. And macaroons were her favourite kind.

As the journey waged on, Serena slowly became a little more talkative and finally managed to stop thinking about Ash for a few hours. It was about 6pm in the evening now, as the sun was setting on a very long, tiring day. Of course, they took breaks along the way every couple of hours or so, but everyone was still exhausted - The boys and the Ponytas in particular. It was about time for another break, as the boys brought the Ponytas to a steady stop by an open field. They disembarked and sat down in the field, to rest and eat. Serena and Shauna remained in the carriage and had a quick bite to eat too. It was rather cold out now, so Serena considered letting the boys eat in the carriage. There was more than enough space. But she couldn't look Ash in the eye right now. She wasn't ready to face him just yet. Yet, Serena did still feel a little guilty as she ate. Not just because of leaving the boys in the cold, but also because of how she made Ash feel that evening in the secret room. She never wanted to break his heart. However, she had to be firm and realistic. Regardless of feelings. At least that's what she was telling herself anyway.
Ash was keeping a watchful eye on the carriage the whole time he ate, maybe a little too obsessively. Gary and Brock were too focused on their dinner to even notice. But Ash wished he could be in there with Serena. Not just because of how he felt about her. He was actually surprising himself and doing a stellar job of repressing his feelings. They didn't matter today. The primary concern right now, was to keep Serena safe, at all costs. And that wasn't just so he could keep his job. That was Gary and Brock's concern. Because if he took the whole Musketeer thing out of the equation, he'd still do everything he could to keep Serena safe. Without question. Even if she never returned his feelings. There was a deep, strong instinct, growing within him, that would rush to defend her, even if it meant putting himself in danger. He really couldn't prize his eyes away from the carriage right now, even if he tried. His instinct was telling him that they had had it far too easy so far. And his instinct was right, as he sensed incoming danger…

Then, just as Ash looked down for a second to take another bite of his food, another carriage, led by two Rhyhorn, suddenly came bulldozering down the path. They were being whipped by someone sitting on top. Then it came to an abrupt stop. The sun set upon its arrival, leaving them in a shroud of darkness, only illuminated by moonlight and a single lamp post. Ash leapt up and rushed over to investigate. He noticed the carriage had a big red R painted on the carriage door. Ash was almost certain they weren't friendly, especially because they were so cruelly whipping Pokemon, like it was nothing. Brock and Gary stood up too and joined Ash, looking on inquisitively. Serena and Shauna noticed the sudden arrival too, but they didn't panic and remained in the carriage, watching on and looking just as tentative.

'Keep your wits about you, lads. Whoever they are, we'll take them together.'

'We don't know if they're hostile yet, though! Let's see what they have to say first,' said Gary.
Ash shook his head.

'I'm not taking that chance. While Princess Serena is under our protection, we have to assume they are hostile, until proven otherwise,' he replied bluntly.

The occupants of the carriage took their time to come out, almost testing the nerve of the lads, as they waited a little nervously. The figure on top remained where they were for the time being. Then the two figures inside finally came out. Serena gasped and quickly leant over Shauna and opened the carriage door. She recognised something.

'Watch out, boys! They're the assassins that tried to kill me!'

It was Jessie and James, but they were wearing their masks again. Ash's eyes immediately widened and his muscles tensed up, ready for a fight.

'Identify yourselves! We are the Princess' royal Musketeers and you are under arrest for treason! If you come quietly, this doesn't have to ugly.'

Ash drew his sword and then Brock and Gary followed his lead and drew theirs too. Jessie and James just chuckled. They were utterly unfazed by Ash's threat.

'You don't know who you're dealing with…' said Jessie.

'But we'll be glad to show you...' said James.

They whisked their masks off dramatically and revealed their faces, then announced themselves to everyone.
'Prepare for trouble!'

'And make it double!'

'To protect the world from devastation!'

'To unite all peoples within our nation!'

'To denounce the evils of truth and love!'

'To extend our reach to the stars above!'

'Jessie!'

'James!'

'Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!'

'Surrender now, or prepare to fight!'

'Meowth! That's right!' finished Meowth.

He jumped off the carriage in front of Jessie and James, to complete the trio. But the boys weren't intimidated either and just shook their heads, not impressed at all. They weren't having it. Especially from these clowns. But then Team Rocket drew their own swords, which surprised the boys a little. They looked like lowlifes, but must have been fairly well trained to have swords.

'Now, YOU can surrender now before this gets ugly,' said Meowth.

Jessie chuckled and then looked over to Serena.

'You're coming with us, Princess. We have plans for you…'

'Over my dead body!' roared Ash. 'You'll have to get past us first!'

'Gladly,' said James.
'Stay in the carriage, Your Majesty!' shouted Ash.

Serena simply just nodded, shut the carriage door and did as she was told. But she was already worried about Ash. Very worried. It was his job and he was well trained enough, but the last thing she wanted was for him to get hurt. Or worse.
It was like a Wild West showdown, as silence filled the air and a strong gust of wind blew by. Just steely stares, anticipating who would make the first quickdraw move. And then Ash took the bait and lunged forwards. James smirked and dodged his first attack.
Ash was surprised he dodged it so easily and had to keep his balance, as he went flying forwards into Team Rocket's carriage. Then Jessie decided to make the next move and clashed swords with Brock. Gary threw himself in next and was met by Meowth. Gary laughed and underestimated him massively. Meowth proved to be a worthy fighter too and took him on just as well as a human would. Just as Ash had got some composure, James came crashing into him, as they too locked swords.
'En garde,' said James smugly.
It was fairly even for the most part, remarkably. Team Rocket were quite well trained too, to the surprise of the boys. But of course they were, when they secretly worked under the captain. Yet, they were still not able to get an upper hand and actually beat the boys. There was a brief pause in action, as everyone took a breather and re-assessed their strategies. Then strangely, Team Rocket put their swords away. The boys looked surprised and raised their eyebrows. They could have reacted quickly and ended it now, but they weren't cold hearted murders. No Musketeer was supposed to be. All they could do was arrest them. But then Jessie spoke, to stop their trial of thought.

'It seems this can not be decided with a sword battle. So we'll just have to settle this another way. One way or another, the princess is coming with us. Now.'

The boys had no idea what they were going to do next, as Team Rocket slowly reached into their pockets. They smirked devilishly and then pulled out two pokeballs. They hurled them into the sky and out came a Weezing and an Arbok. The boys were stunned into silence. Team Rocket shouted out attacks before they could even react properly.

'Hey! That's cheating!' shouted Gary.

Serena gasped and really started to panic now. She couldn't bear to see Ash hurt and had to stop herself from rushing out of the carriage. It was a shock to everyone, because Pokemon weren't usually used for fighting in this day and age. Only scumbags would do it. The boys tried to escape the attacks, but it was too late. Weezing unleashed a sludge bomb and Arbok, a deadly poison sting, which stuck the boys to the ground and caused them to roll around in pain. While they were struggling to get free of the sludge, Team Rocket laughed triumphantly and quickly ran over to the royal carriage. They swung the door open and threatened to unleash an attack on Serena and Shauna if they didn't follow their orders. So of course, they obeyed.

'Get in the carriage, NOW! And don't try any funny business, or your Musketeers will be in much, much more pain than they are now,' threatened Meowth.

The girls wanted to fight, but they realised there was nothing they could do. Team Rocket were actually winning and not looking like clowns at all the time. They were brutal and dirty with their tactics, as they pushed the girls into the carriage. Then Jessie and James recalled their Pokemon and got in with the girls.

'Let's go, Meowth!' hissed Jessie.

Meowth jumped back up on the carriage and whipped the Rhyhorns to get going.

'Princess!' called out Ash, desperately.

He reached his hand out and tried to break free of the sludge, but it was futile. Ash had failed to do the one thing he swore to do and it was absolutely destroying him. Thankfully, Pikachu managed to break free with his iron tail attack and then helped the boys. Ash frustratingly ripped the last piece of sludge off himself in a red hot rage. He was seething and would not let Team Rocket get away with this, if it was the last thing he did. Ash had a brief moment where he beat himself up for letting it all happen and then he quickly returned to his usually determined self. Brock and Gary, however, looked significantly more defeated than him and had their heads hung in shame. Ash angrily shook them and called them to attention.

'Hey! What are you doing! Stop feeling sorry for yourselves and get up! NOW!'

'What's the use?' said Gary. 'We'll never catch up with them. We don't even know where they're taking them!'

'Yeah, what can we possibly do now?' added Brock.

'Our duties! We can't just leave the princess like that! We have to do all we can to get her back!'

'How? Where do we even start?' asked Brock.

'We'll figure that out as we go! It's better to try, rather than just sit around doing nothing!'

Brock nodded half heartedly, but seemed to be coming round a little now. Gary was still far from convinced they could do it, though.

'Boys! Are you Musketeers or not?! This has been our dream since we were kids. You can't just give up now! Don't be cowards!'

Gary shook his head and looked a little fired up now.

'Hey! You take that back! I'm no coward! I just don't see what we can do now.'
Ash shook his head at him, disgusted by his attitude.

'You know, I thought you were better than this, Gary… Actually. You know what? I'm going on my own. If you two are brave enough, you can catch up later. We're wasting time arguing.'

Ash impulsively ran over to his Ponyta and unattached it from the carriage. Then he got on it without any hesitation.

'Wait, Ash! You can't go alone!' shouted Brock.

But it was too late. Ash was off in a determined defiance, as his Ponyta galloped onwards. He figured that it was at least worth following the path and seeing where it took him. Then he turned back and shouted:

'I'm going to save the princess or die trying! You hear me?! And you are no Musketeers if you don't at least try!'

Then he was gone in a flash. Brock hung his head in shame again.

'Die?!' questioned Gary. 'He's lost his mind!'

Gary was trying to get Brock to agree with him, but he didn't say anything. He seemed to agree with Ash's last words, even if they were a little extreme and most certainly emotionally fuelled by his own personal feelings for Serena.

'DIE?!' repeated Gary. 'We barely even know the princess! Why should we die for her?!'

'That's not the point, Gary! When we signed up to be Musketeers and took on this task, we knew exactly what we were getting into. This is our life now, whether you like it or not. And we have to fulfill that honour. So, come on, you idiot!'

Brock pushed him and ordered him to get onto his Ponyta. Gary looked a little taken aback at first, but soon saw that it was the right thing to do. As an honorary Musketeer, he had a moral obligation to stick by and he would never forgive himself if he didn't stay true to it. He still didn't like it much, but some things were more important than his own selfishness. Gary had loved all the perks of being a Musketeer up until this point, but now things were actually starting to get serious, he had to experience the uglier side of it. Whether he liked it or not. Gary didn't feel confident at all, but he took a hefty sigh and got on his Ponyta anyway. Ash was right. He was being a coward. And he didn't want to forever be known as one. Gary nodded at Brock and then they charged on forwards, after Ash and the princess.

A couple miles down the road, Ash had rather brilliantly caught up with Team Rocket. Not enough to stop them yet, but they were in his sight at a distance at least. They were getting closer to Shalour House, which was their initial destination. But Team Rocket weren't heading in that direction. They took a sharp left instead and headed towards an old abandoned prison tower on the coast. Ash encouraged Ponyta to give it its all and run at its fastest. He wanted to catch them before they could get to the tower. But it was impossible, as Ash only made it to the tower, just after Team Rocket dragged the girls in. At least he knew where Serena was, though. That was the main thing. He rode a little further toward the main entrance. Then he stopped and tied Ponyta to a lamp post and snuck inside quietly. He had to adapt and change his tactics, so now he didn't want them to know he was coming and wanted to take them by surprise. Ash had the advantage here.

Team Rocket took the girls right to the very top of the tower and instructed them to get in two separate jail cells. Serena and Shauna protested a little, but a threat of another poison sting got them to comply eventually. Team Rocket locked the cells with a key and cackled gleefully. Then they started celebrating a little stupidly and looked proud of themselves, as they danced a little in the corner of the room. Serena and Shauna cringed at them and it got even cringier, when they started to sing. The girls rolled their eyes, when Team Rocket reached a catchy part of their silly little song:

Team Rocket's rockin'

Talkin' trouble, walkin' trouble

Double trouble, big trouble's gonna follow you

Team Rocket's rockin'

Talkin' trouble, walkin' trouble

Double trouble, big trouble's gonna follow you

We captured the princess!

They'd finally done something right and they couldn't wait to redeem themselves and get in the captain's good books again. But their celebrations were cut short by a livid Serena.

'Just how long do you intend to keep us trapped in here, you cretins?!' cried Serena.

Jessie turned around slowly and looked at her expressionlessly, before she burst into laughter.

'Oh, my dear princess. You're NEVER leaving here! You better get used to it, Your Highness. Breakfast's at 9am sharp!'

James and Meowth sniggered.

'What? You can't do that! Someone will notice. Someone will come and rescue us!' shouted Shauna.

'Oh, no, no, no, sister. No one's coming for you,' said Meowth.

Team Rocket laughed again and then began to walk away and headed back down the tower. Serena grabbed the jail bars and shouted through them.

'Where are you going?! You can't just leave us here!' yelled Serena.

Team Rocket just wagged their fingers at her and told her to shush.

'You can't do this! You'll pay for this! Mark my words!'

Team Rocket continued to ignore her and left. Serena sighed and began to accept her fate. She sat down in a slump and looked down at a decaying, rancid floor. This was no place for a princess, let alone someone like Serena. She didn't deserve this at all. Her dress was getting dirty already and quite frankly, the whole place smelled like rotten eggs. It was just inhumane. Serena wondered why Team Rocket were doing this to her and was desperate for some answers. But despite that, she still couldn't stop herself thinking about Ash. He was the first and only thing on her mind now. Ash said he would do anything to protect her, so where was he? She couldn't blame him for what happened earlier and was concerned about his well-being more than anything, but she really needed him to fulfil his promise. She needed to feel safe with him, regardless of what kind of relationship they were going to have. Serena sighed again and pictured Ash in her head. That dashing, raven-haired, impossible man. With a smile that could melt her into creamy vanilla ice cream. He was truly one of a kind and unsurprisingly enough, thinking about him right now, was the only thing keeping her so calm. She was never really religious, but almost found herself praying for Ash's arrival now.

'Ash,' breathed Serena quietly.

Shauna's ears pricked up a little, just about hearing Serena whisper his name. She wondered why she was saying his name like that, especially in the current predicament they were in. Why was he her first thought? Why him? Shauna didn't question it out loud, instead trying to think for herself why. It was very odd to her indeed. But neither of them had much time to think for any longer, when they suddenly heard a commotion outside. They heard a clash of swords and then saw Team Rocket backing up away from someone, almost retreating. Serena bounced back up and looked over to see what was happening.

'Ash!' gasped Serena.

Her face lit up brightly and her cheeks rose as high as they could. He was a sight for sore eyes and she just couldn't hide her glee. Ash glanced briefly over at her and curled his lips in a flash smile, but kept himself focused on Team Rocket.

'Don't sound so surprised, Princess. I told you, I'd do anything to keep you safe. And when I make a promise, I keep it,' he strained, while landing a big blow on Team Rocket.

Ash had ambushed them this time. He was fuelled by adrenaline and rage and wanted revenge, as he took them on, all by himself. Meanwhile, Gary and Brock had spotted Ash's Ponyta outside and were running up the tower to assist. The clash of swords continued for a while, until Brock and Gary eventually made it up. They were tired, but were still ready to fight and drew their swords. Ash smirked back at them, proud that they eventually made the right decision.

'Give it up, Team Rocket. You're under arrest.'

'Never!' cried James dramatically.

He jabbed his sword forwards. Brock and Gary lunged in and immediately disarmed him, forcing his sword out of his grip and onto the floor. Ash quickly picked it up and attacked Jessie and Meowth with double the threat. They were locked together, until Ash flicked Jessie's sword out of her hand and Gary took Meowth by surprise and took his sword off him too.

'You are beaten,' said Ash.

Team Rocket cowered backwards against the wall, as the boys advanced toward them and pointed their swords on their chests. They acted as if they were going to come quietly and held their hands up, but then their hands stuck into their pockets and they pulled out their Pokemon again. But the boys were prepared for that this time. They knew they would try that dirty trick again, so were relatively unbothered by it this time. Pikachu leapt off Ash's shoulder to defend him, as Arbok and Weezing came out once more. Team Rocket got back up and barked out orders. The boys didn't really want to engage in something so barbaric and it was against their better nature, but they had no choice if they wanted to rescue the princess. Brock released Onix and Gary released Eevee. The Pokemon battled just as bravely as their masters, which was something they were not used to themselves. But it was clear to see that Arbok and Weezing were losing quite badly and it was decided when Ash called out a thunderbolt attack. Pikachu left Team Rocket electrocuted in a pathetic mess on the floor. Then Ash told Pikachu to give them one more shock, assisted by a crunching tackle from Onix and a swift attack from Eevee. The combined attacks sent Team Rocket crashing through a window and into the open night sky.

'Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off!' they all screamed.

They went a fair distance, as the boys watched afar from the tower, only being able to see a little star in the sky twinkle, where they were blasting off to. They had defeated them and very emphatically. The boys put their hands on their hips and nodded victoriously to each other, feeling nothing but pride for themselves. This was their dream and they were living it out in the best way possible right now.

Serena and Shauna clapped and cheered, grateful to be rescued by the three brave Musketeers. There was just the small matter of getting them out of their cells now.

'Well done, Musketeers! Now if you could just let us out, please,' said Serena.

'Oh, yes! Of course,' said Ash. 'Luckily, I managed to take the keys off of them while I was fighting them downstairs.'

Ash smirked. Serena was impressed and couldn't stop herself from grinning and being in awe of Ash. He released Serena and bowed to her. Serena was in no mood for formalities, though, and rather surprisingly tackled Ash into a bear hug in front of everyone. Ash stumbled about a little, not expecting the suddenness of it. He was tempted to go fully in too and wrap his arms around her tight, but he thought better of it and only patted her on the back a little. Gary, Brock and Shauna were already speculating just why the princess was hugging him like that, so seemingly uncharacteristically. And Serena really didn't need them speculating any further. So she quickly remembered they weren't alone and pulled away. She cleared her throat and regained some decorum.

'Uh. Thank you, Ash. Your services have been noted and you will be rewarded when we get back to the palace.'

'Thank you, Your Majesty. It's my pleasure.'

Ash saluted her. Serena bit her lip and so badly wanted to kiss him right there and then. She could just do it in an instant and not give a single care in the world what everyone else thought (mainly Shauna). Yet, she simply just couldn't bring herself to do it and resisted the urge to scratch that itch. With great difficulty. Her daring thoughts were interrupted anyway, by Shauna clearing her throat.

'Ahem. What about me?' she complained.

'Oh, yes. Sorry. Here, Gary.'

Ash chucked the keys over to him. Gary caught them and smirked at Shauna, as he made his way over to free her. He kind of liked having the power over her for once in this situation, knowing Shauna finally had to admit they were at least competent Musketeers now. More than that even. And not just for that satisfaction. He thought Shauna's sarcasm and the way she acted around him was actually pretty cute. And he got exactly what he wanted again, as she pouted at him and demanded he free her immediately, while she stomped her foot. Gary decided to have a little fun with her first and twirled the keys around a little, to tease her.

'Sure. I'll release you, Lady Shauna. But only if you say pretty please, Gary.'

He winked at her playfully and perhaps rather stupidly too. It was incredibly brave for a commoner to tease a noble.

'How dare you!' retorted Shauna. 'Open this cell immediately or I'll give you a smack!'

Shauna tried to reach Gary with her hand through the cell bars, as he backed away, acting scared and only winding her up more. Ash and Brock laughed.

'C'mon, Gary. Don't push it. Let her out now, man.' said Brock.

Gary sighed. He was having way too much fun with this, for it to end so disappointingly.

'Oh, alright. I was just having a little fun.'

He put the key in the lock and pulled the door open for her. Gary extended his arm out gentlemanly, to guide Shauna out. Shauna scoffed and pushed him away.

'What? No hug?'

Shauna couldn't believe the nerve of him and shook her head prudishly.

'NO!'

Serena was finding this quite funny too and wished Shauna would lighten up a little. They did just save them from a very unpleasant night in a cell - perhaps a lot longer even. Shauna at least seemed to remember that for a second and took a little glance back at Gary and had a glint in her eye. She hated to admit it, but despite how irritating he was, she was sort of finding him quite attractive now. She didn't think he had it in him, if she was being really honest with herself. But he proved her otherwise. Gary caught her staring and smiled smugly, feeling like she was finally coming round to him and maybe even starting to like him a little. But then, Shauna cut her eye at him and folded her arms, just as she always did. Gary just chuckled in response, amused by how stubborn such a cute girl could be. It was just too adorable.

'Well, don't I at least get some thanks?'

'Hmm. In all fairness, he did just save you, Shauna…' said Serena.

Shauna sighed and reluctantly admitted the fact.

'Yeah. You're right, I suppose… Thank you, Musketeer.'

Shauna still wasn't gonna call him by his name, like Serena was doing with Ash. But getting a thank you out of her to a commoner, was a miracle in itself. Serena hoped Shauna would become more like her in time and treat commoners the same as anyone else. Gary tipped his hat to Shauna respectfully.

'You're welcome, milady.'

It should have ended there, but Shauna still had to squeeze in another sarcastic little comment at the end and get the last word, of course. Serena shook her head and scolded Shauna a little. Ash watched on humorously and was enjoying this little moment, as it seemed the barrier between nobles and commoners appeared to be broken. In another world, they could have all easily been childhood friends together, he thought, as everyone laughed and joked heartily in a triumphant celebration. But then he remembered why they had made the trip to Shalour City in the first place. He cleared his throat. It was never really established, but he had always thought of himself as the lead Musketeer and thus, believed that it was his responsibility to maintain some order.

'Excuse me. As much as I'm enjoying this, we still have to get you to Shalour House, Your Majesty. It is very late now and we need to get you to a safe place as soon as possible. Especially with Team Rocket still around somewhere. So, if you please, Your Majesty?'

Ash motioned down the tower steps.

'Oh, yes! Of course. I almost forgot myself!' joked Serena.

Ash chuckled and then the Musketeers escorted the girls out and back into the carriage waiting outside. They re-attached Ash's Ponyta and then made the short trip over to Shalour House. Lady Korrina and her grandfather, Gurkinn, were waiting at the entrance and looked very concerned. Then their concern quickly changed to relief, when they saw the princess arriving, safe and sound. They bowed to her and welcomed her and the boys inside. Once inside, they allocated the boys a bedroom to share and gave Serena and Shauna separate royal quarters.

They spent the next day there, while the boys kept an eagle eye out for Team Rocket or any other threats. But there was no sign of anything remotely threatening and the journey back was just as uneventful. They all returned to the palace, just as the time was inching closer to midnight. The carriage came to a stop in front of the palace steps, as the boys breathed a sigh of relief. They were exhausted and needed a nice long rest. Ash got off his Ponyta first and stroked it and then fed it a treat, as a way of rewarding it for its good work. Then he made his way over to the carriage door and opened it. He bowed and held the door open.

'We have arrived, Your Majesty. You may now exit the carriage.'

'Thank you, Ash. Help me out please.'

Ash was a little surprised at the request, but he didn't hesitate to stick a hand out for her. Serena took it and Ash helped her out. Ash smiled and then turned to Shauna.

'Do- Do you need assistance too, Lady Shauna?' asked Ash, a little awkwardly.

He felt he had to ask, to be polite. Shauna laughed.

'No, thank you, Musketeer.'

Shauna got out too and then Brock and Gary joined them at the front of the palace. Two guards arrived shortly after and took the carriage and the Ponytas back to the royal stables.

Everyone was smiling and happy. 2 days ago, they were nothing more than associates to each other (bar Serena and Ash and their secret meetings). But now they were a little more than that. Shauna wouldn't admit it, still being stuck in her ways, but there was an understanding between them all now and there was even potential for them to all be friends, away from all the pointless formalities. Being rescued by the boys, simply just established a level of trust and loyalty between them. And Serena thought that was so beautiful, as she looked at them all with fondness. She'd always wanted more friends her own age and if they happened to be Musketeers, who protected her, then she was not complaining at all. Especially when one of them was her favourite person in the world. Before the trip, she was confused and didn't know if she even still wanted Ash in her life. She even considered sending him away for a millisecond. But that was never going to happen. That would have killed her. Her conflict was tearing her apart enough as it was - making her sick with want. And she had tried denying and repelling her true feelings for the whole week. But the truth was, she could not bear to be apart from Ash and the rescue proved to be the pivotal moment to accept that fact. She had made up her mind now. Some risks were worth taking…

Everyone was waiting for the final words of the trip from the princess now, before they could dismiss themselves and retire to bed.

'Thank you, everyone. Lady Shauna and I are most grateful for your services. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed and as mentioned before, you will be rewarded for your bravery...'

The boys looked at each other and grinned. Brock and Gary were hoping it was going to be a pay rise, while Ash had a different kind of reward in mind... But he'd do the same thing over and over again, without any expectation of anything in return. As long as Serena was safe, that's all that mattered to him. The boys thanked Serena and then she continued on:

'I will expect to see you all tomorrow morning in the throne room. But for now, take a well earned rest, boys. You are dismissed.'

They bowed and made their way up the palace steps, but Serena had a little more to say yet.

'Except you…

The boys paused mid step and looked back at her.

'...Ash.'

'I wish to talk to you alone. You are dismissed too, Shauna. Thank you for accompanying me on the trip. Oh and could you take Pikachu with you please, boys.'

Brock and Gary nodded. Ash told Pikachu to go with them and then he jumped off Ash's shoulder and followed them up the steps. Serena clearly had something important she really needed to say. But Shauna wasn't leaving yet.

'Y-you're welcome, Your Highness. But I can wait for you he-'

'No, Shauna. Please, leave us. You know I am perfectly safe under Ash's protection.'

'O-okay.'

Shauna reluctantly joined Gary and Brock on the palace steps. They gave each other curious looks, wondering why Serena wanted to talk to Ash alone. All they could do was shrug, without a clue in the world, as they walked up together. Gary couldn't resist a cheeky look back at Shauna, as she lifted her dress up the steps and puffed her cheeks out. She was just too cute for him to resist. He offered his hand again to help her, but she declined once more. Gary chuckled again at her obvious defiance to let Gary ever have the upper hand over her. It was getting a little ridiculous now. Brock shook his head with a wry smile, wondering when it would end. Ash and Serena watched them all enter the palace and shut the door behind them, leaving them alone for the first time since that day in the secret room.

A sharp chill blew by between them in the night air, causing them to shiver ever so slightly. They stood under two lanterns, either side of the palace steps, lighting up their faces in the misty midnight dusk. Ash put his hands in his pockets and smiled warmly at Serena, which seemed to make her forget it was even cold. She smiled back at him and Ash could see her blushing a little under the lantern light. There was only silence, as they just stared into each other. Serena was going over everything she wanted to say in head, but she concluded it all had to come from the heart anyway. She opened her mouth to speak, but Ash beat her to it.

'So. What did you want to talk about, Ser- I mean, Your Majesty.'

Ash felt like he still had to be formal with her, despite the rescue and even when they were alone. But he couldn't be any more wrong.

'Please, Ash. You can still call me by my name when we're alone.'

'Oh, right. Good. I wasn't sure after everything…'

He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and looked away from her. But Serena put a hand on his cheek and then he faced her again. Ash took a sharp intake of breath, never believing for a second that he would feel her touch again and especially not in such an intimate way. Then Serena's hand brushed away and back by her side.

'Yes. About that… I have an apology to make.'

'Oh, no! You have nothing to be sorry for at all!'

'Oh, but I do! I should never have hurt you like that. You laid your heart out on the line for me and I… I broke it.'

'It's okay, Serena. I completely understand. I guess a Musketeer and a princess just aren't meant to be together…' he said, in a low, monotone voice.

He looked down sadly and kicked some pebbles.

'Oh, but that's where you're wrong, My Sweet Prince.'

Ash looked back up, with wide eyes, instantly filled with hope. But he didn't want to get too excited. Not just yet. There could still be a massive but.

'Wh-what do you mean?'

Serena giggled happily.

'It means I've made my mind up.'

Ash's eyes glistened in the dark, as his heart seemed to be growing in size and putting a lot of heavy pressure on his chest.

'A-Are you sure?' stammered Ash.

He was incredibly nervous all of a sudden. Not once over the last two days, did he feel any kind of nerves at all. But this was different. This was his heart on the line again. Which, strangely enough, was a lot harder than putting his life at risk to protect Serena.

'Yes, of course I am, silly! The way you rescued me… Your grit and determination… It just put everything into perspective - Made me realise what's most important.'

Ash nodded, but still needed Serena to spell it out for him.

'Which is?'

Serena cupped his face in her hands.

'Being happy. Letting myself have what I want. Even if it's forbidden. I don't care anymore. Because what I want most of all… is you, Ash.'

Ash let out a heavy sigh, as if he'd been holding his breath for the last minute and then laughed a little in disbelief.

'I- uh. I don't know what to-' fumbled Ash.

'Oh, hush! I'll say it for you.'

Serena smirked and looked up to Ash's hat. She snatched it off his head and held it against their faces, hiding their left sides. Then she moved her face closer to Ash and allowed herself to fall under the spell of his eyes once again. But she didn't waste a second fighting it this time and kissed him straight on the lips. No hesitation whatsoever. Ash's eyes widened, but he didn't hesitate either and kissed her back right away, achingly hungry for it. They both shut their eyes and curled their lips a little, smiling through the whole kiss. Serena wanted to make up for that disappointing peck before - and boy did she. It lasted a lot longer and Ash finally got everything he had been craving. Serena tasted like sweet cherry on his lips. He'd never felt so good in his life and wished it never had to end. But then Serena slowly unstuck her lips from his and batted her eyes back open. She breathed deeply and regained her breath. The aftermath of the kiss made her head spin a little for a second. She couldn't quite believe that she had just done that. But she had no regrets at all and giggled delightedly. Ash giggled with her and had the goofiest expression on his face, most unlike a "manly" Musketeer. But any man would be reduced to a helpless mess like that, after being kissed by a princess, they never thought they would have a chance with. Ash's mouth was still open a little, as he processed it all. Serena giggled again and closed his mouth. And then she put his hat back on his head and winked at him.

'Bonne nuit,' said Serena.

She blew him a kiss and almost skipped up the palace steps giddily. Ash sighed again and then shook his head. He couldn't believe his luck. Despite his strong positive attitude, he was sure that there wasn't a chance for him and Serena. The odds were against them. At least that's what he told himself anyway, to make it easier. Yet, the gates of potential were flooding back open once again with that kiss. Yes, it was only a kiss. But it meant so much more than that to Ash. He didn't want to get too ahead of himself here, but what did this mean? Could a princess and a Musketeer be granted a love story after all? A Cinderella-esque fairytale even? And if cupid really did exist in some way amongst all that was romantic, then maybe he was their fairy godmother in this story. Maybe anything was possible in the name of love. Irrespective of creed or class. Perhaps times were changing…
