The King of Fighters x Slam Dunk: Basketball Love

Author's Note: This one-shot fanfiction story takes place in an alternate universe.

The hot and humid air of New York City hung heavy, thick with the scent of both exhaust and street food, a familiar aroma to anyone who called the city home and while it was normal to the locals who had lived and stay here, it was quite a foreign concept to a young and petite Japanese woman who had recently moved here not too long ago.

From upon a vacant basketball court in the city during a clear and tranquil Friday afternoon, Haruko Akagi had dribbled her basketball with focused intensity as she had took her personal time in honing her basketball skills, with said basketball court being her personal sanctuary, a small piece of home transplanted to this concrete jungle. She had come to the United States with two dreams clutched tightly in her heart: to become an expert medical nurse and to improve her basketball techniques.

After graduating from Shohoku High in Japan one year ago, Haruko had surprised her older brother Takenori and the rest of her family and friends in telling them that she was leaving Japan for North America to pursue her medical nurse studies while also wanting to learn much about and see what the country had to offer, promising to keep in touch with them from time to time and although Haruko found herself overwhelmed in being within an unfamiliar place that was clearly away from home, she didn't yield nor falter as she knew and realized that this was simply another challenge in her life, to which she had personally vowed to overcome and succeed with flying colors in due time.

As Haruko had decided to take a short break in order to catch her breath and relax for a few minutes by sitting down in the middle of the court and drinking some ice cold water from a sports water bottle that she had with her while wiping off some sweat from her forehead, an unexpected voice had suddenly caught her attention.

"Not bad little lady. I have to say that you got fire when it comes to your speed, but your need to work a bit on your defense" the unexpected voice said.

Upon hearing the unexpected voice, Haruko had made a small gasp as she quickly turned her view over to the basketball court entrance and saw a tall African-American man standing there holding an impressed expression on his face.

"You say that I need to work on my defense?" Haruko said as she got up from the ground while continuing to look at the unknown man.

"Indeed. I couldn't help but notice your basketball training while passing by. From the way that I can see and tell right now, you tend to leave yourself wide open when it comes to your speed in attempting a shot. It's always best to have a good defense and and always ready yourself if an opponent tries to snatch the ball from you when least expected" the unknown man said as he entered into the court so that he could stop and stand a few feet away from Haruko.

"I see. I'm not surprised to hear of this statement. I was always told in the past that my defense was a bit lacking and that I needed to improve on it as much as I could" Haruko said.

"If you want, I can help you out with your basketball training right here and now" the unknown man said.

"You sure you want to do that? I don't want to cause any trouble in taking up your personal time when least expected" Haruko said in a concerned way.

"It's no problem on my part in helping people out at the given chance and opportunity and to help a cute girl such as yourself would truly make my day" the unknown man said with a playful grin on his face.

Upon hearing that statement from the unknown man, Haruko had slightly blushed as she didn't expect for him to say something like that to her and that she had personally appreciated it in her own spirit.

"Thank you so very much for lending your time to help me out" Haruko said as she continued to slightly blush.

"Like I said, it's no problem on my part. The name's Lucky Glauber by the way" the unknown man said as he introduced himself to Haruko while extending his right hand out in mid-air towards her.

"It's nice to meet you Lucky. My name is Haruko Akagi" Haruko said as she introduced herself to Lucky while using her own right hand to grab and hold Lucky's in a mid-air handshake.

And so began an unexpected friendship. Lucky, with his raw power and street smarts of being an expert basketball player, saw the potential in Haruko's unwavering spirit and dedication to the sport of basketball. The duo would spent every Friday afternoon on the court, with Lucky patiently correcting Haruko on her stance, refining her dribbling, and teaching her the fundamentals on how to greatly improve herself, with Haruko learning and understanding on what to do in order to become an expert basketball player herself.

In addition to helping Haruko out in basketball, Lucky had also trained Haruko in karate as well due to the fact that he wanted her to learn self-defense on account that New York City can be dangerous at times, especially at night and it's always best to ready and prepare yourself for a worse-case scenario in the near future. As a past karate champion, Lucky had taught Haruko basic karate moves, focusing on quick strikes, defense, and countering, emphasizing that knowing how to protect herself would help make her into a more confident and effective basketball player. At first, Haruko was awkward and hesitant, her movements stiff and uncoordinated, but Lucky's encouragement and unwavering belief in her had gradually chipped away at her inhibitions and in due time, Haruko became much more bold and confident in her karate training, impressing Lucky as he saw that Haruko was now holding nothing back when it came to her self-defense.

Weeks turned into months. The basketball court became their meeting place, a shared space where they pushed each other to be better. Lucky told her about his life, growing up in the neighborhood, the struggles he faced, and his passion for both fighting and basketball. Haruko, in turn told Lucky about her own past in Japan, her personal love for basketball, her admiration for her older brother Takenori, and her dreams of becoming a medical nurse, helping people out in need.

As they continued to train with each other, a different kind of heat began to bloom between them, a connection that went beyond basketball and karate. They laughed together, shared stories, and found comfort in each other's presence. Haruko was drawn to Lucky's strength and kindness, his ability to see beyond her small stature and recognize her inner fire. Lucky, in turn, was captivated by Haruko's unwavering optimism, her infectious enthusiasm, and her genuine compassion. He saw in her a purity and vulnerability that touched his heart, to which he personally vowed that he wouldn't let anything bad happen to Haruko on his watch.

One Friday afternoon after their basketball training session, Lucky turned to her, his eyes filled with a warmth that made her breath catch in her throat.

"Haruko" Lucky said, his voice calm yet sincere. "I...really enjoy spending time with you. I was wondering if you'd like to go out sometime? You know, a real date?"

Haruko's heart leaped. She had been secretly harboring the same feelings, but fear had held her back. Now, looking into his warm eyes, she knew she couldn't deny what she felt.

"I...would love that Lucky" Haruko said in an emotional tone.

One week later on Friday night, the date was everything Haruko had dreamed of and more. Lucky, usually clad in his street clothes, looked surprisingly dapper in a simple white button-down shirt with a black bowtie, a black dress jacket, black dress pants, black dress socks, and black dress shoes. Haruko had wore a yellow sleeveless blouse shirt that showed off her toned arms, a white lace shrug jacket for when the evening cooled, a blue knee-length dress skirt that accentuated her shapely legs, and a pair of white low-heel dress sandals. She completed the look in adding a touch of glamour with red lipstick, a fresh red manicure for her fingernails, and a fresh red pedicure for her toes.

They started with dinner at a small Italian restaurant tucked away in Greenwich Village. Over plates of delicious pasta and refreshing soda, they talked and laughed, the conversation flowing effortlessly. During their personal talk, Haruko was surprised to hear and learn from Lucky that in the next two months, he and two of his good friends, a boxer named Heavy D! and a football player named Brian Battler were gonna enter into a fighting tournament known as The King of Fighters '94 and that Lucky had wanted Haruko to come with him so that she could cheer him and his friends on from the sidelines, to which Haruko had gladly and graciously agreed to. After their dinner, the duo had then strolled through Times Square, taking in the dazzling lights and bustling crowds while feeling surprisingly close and intimate as they walked hand-in-hand while enjoying themselves in their own given chance and opportunity. Eventually in due time, Lucky and Haruko had made their way to the pedestrian walking section of the Brooklyn Bridge, being the only ones there upon sight as the two of them had gazed at the huge and magnificent city of New York from their own personal view.

"So Haruko, did you enjoy our date from tonight?" Lucky said as he looked at Haruko with a happy smile on his face.

"Indeed I did Lucky. I truly appreciate going out with you while also having much fun and excitement in the process as well. I wholeheartedly thank you for giving me a good time" Haruko said as she looked at Lucky with a cheerful expression on her face.

When Lucky had heard that statement from Haruko, he had soon made and held a resolved and determined expression on his face, his eyes filled with personal emotion as he had wanted to finally confess something to Haruko at the given chance and opportunity.

"Haruko, there's something that I want to confess to you right here and now. I'm...in love with you Haruko. I've never met anyone like you before in the past. You're strong, kind, and very determined to always do your best no matter what. It's because of this that I want to be with you as your boyfriend and that I won't anything bad happen to you on my watch while also being by your side now and forever" Lucky said as he talked and spoken in a resolved and determined tone.

Upon hearing that statement from Lucky, Haruko had looked on in a surprised yet emotional state as she had slowly made and held a sincere smile on her face while her eyes had welled up with tears of joy, personally taken aback in hearing Lucky's romantic confession towards her and from there, Haruko had wanted to confess something to Lucky in her own given time and state.

"Lucky, I'm...in love with you too. You had helped me out when least expected and taught me how to be much better in both basketball and karate while also showing your kindness and compassion towards me as well. Just like how you said you wanted to be my boyfriend in being by my side now and forever, I want to be your girlfriend in being by your side now and forever" Haruko said as she looked at Lucky with an emotional expression on her face.

The words hung in the air, a silent testament to the deep connection they had forged. Before Lucky knew it, Haruko reached out and gently cupped his face in her hands. She lifted herself up towards him via tiptoeing, her lips meeting his in a soft and emotional kiss that quickly deepened into a romantic and passionate embrace. Both Lucky and Haruko had hugged each other as they had closed their eyes while moaning in pleasure to one another during their kiss, blushing very greatly in the process and signifying the fact that the two of them were now officially a couple.

In that moment, surrounded by the vibrant energy of New York City, Haruko knew she had found something truly special. She had come to the city to pursue her dreams, but she had found something even more precious: a love that transcended cultures and backgrounds, a love that was as strong and resilient as the city itself. Lucky and Haruko's journey as a young couple was just beginning, written in the concrete jungle, one kiss, one dribble, one shared dream at a time.
