No Remnant Light this week, 'tis on hiatus between 'volumes' while I get my backlog built back up again!
Instead, have this cute little Jaune/Coco oneshot that I genuinely do not remember writing! I'm serious, I was so sick that I wrote this is a fugue state, passed out, and then woke up to my mate having finished beta reading it for me.
In any case, I hope you enjoy!
"Jaune Arc! Get over here, now!"
Jaune flinched as a sharp voice cut through the chatter of the cafeteria, calling his name. There was silence all around him as he looked around, trying his best to see where the voice had come from… There was a part of him deep down that was kinda half-hoping that it had been Weiss, but if he was being honest with himself, it hadn't sounded anything like her.
Plus, there was also the fact that Weiss was sitting almost directly across the cafeteria table from him, alongside the rest of Team RWBY and JNPR.
That kinda made it hard for him to think it was her calling out to him. He didn't even think she would yell at him, especially since he had laid off on his embarrassing -for both of them, it turned out- displays of affection. All it had taken for him to realise what exactly was going on had been for him to spot Pyrrha and Weiss making out during 'study time.'
"ARC!"
Jaune jolted a little as he realised he had been a bit lost in his head, his body automatically jumping to his feet with instincts that Pyrrha had way too much fun beating into him. As he looked around, he finally found the source of the voice, but…
"Wait, Coco?"
Team CFVY was sitting a little away from Teams RWBY and JNPR, except for Coco, who was standing, one foot resting on her seat as she crossed her arms over her chest. She was staring at him over her glasses with an expectant look on her face, and Jaune struggled not to trip as he pulled his legs over the bench he was sitting on
He managed to do so and started to head over towards Coco. But before he could leave, Yang stuck her tongue out at him as he passed her, laughing to herself. "Uh oh… Our boy Jaune is in T-rubble! What do you guys think he did to piss her off?"
Jaune just rolled his eyes at her, shaking his head. "I don't think I've done anything recently that would piss her off, though? We've been hanging out, but they've all gone pretty well."
And that was the truth! Coco had been popping up here and there, either just to talk or to drag him down to Vale with her for some errand. He'd played 'bag carrier' for all of his sisters and his mother, so he was used to it, and also… Coco was just darn good company, with her dry wit and charisma.
Blake hummed at his words, glancing up from her book for a moment. First at Coco, then back to Jaune, all the while having a small smirk on her face. "Well, I think that you're about to if you don't hurry over there."
Jaune looked over and saw her continuing to glare at him, now just with her foot tapping on the ground. He nodded to the rest of them, and as he started to head over, he vaguely heard the double-echo of a 'Good luck Jaune!' from Ruby and Pyrrha respectively, and smiled to himself.
Coco and Team CFVY weren't very far away from him, so he made it over to her fairly quickly, standing in front of the girl as she glared at him. There was a moment of silence as he just met her eyes, confused and worried about why she seemed so upset.
After that moment, however, she merely turned on her heel and waved her hand over her shoulder, starting to walk off. "Come with me."
Jaune glanced down at Velvet, Fox, and Yatsuhashi, but got confused looks from all of them as well. Velvet reached up and patted Jaune on the arm, a solemn look on her face but a teasing tone to her voice. "It was nice knowing you, Jaune."
Jaune could feel himself sweating a little as he moved to follow Coco out of the cafeteria, ignoring the teasing as best he could. Ruby and Weiss had been the ones to introduce all of them to Team CFVY, and the two of them had said how lovely they all were… And while he trusted his friends, Coco was intense sometimes.
Whenever he looked at her, however, he always got this kind of feeling as if he had already known her before. It was only her, not any of the rest of Team CFVY, which was a little confusing, because he couldn't think of how he would have known her specifically, instead of hearing of Team CFVY altogether…
Their walk was silent, and Jaune quickly realised that she was directing him back to the dorm building… Specifically, the second floor, where Coco's dorm was. If he had been sweating with worry before that realisation, then it was nothing compared to what he felt now.
"Coco… What's going on? If I did something to offend you, I'm really, uh, sorry about whatever it was."
There was silence for a little more, but Coco did glance over her shoulder at him, looking over her cool sunglasses, her dark, orange eyes boring into him for a moment. She rolled her eyes a moment later, stopping in front of a doorway and opening it with her scroll.
"Just get inside, man."
Jaune had to stop the instinctual response to salute her by force of will as he entered her room. She followed him in and motioned for him to stand in the middle of the room as she moved over to the chair at her desk. As he moved into his 'position', he glanced around, realising that there was a lot of sewing materials strewn about…
"Alright, can you tell me what's going on here, Coco? I really am sorry if I did something that upset you."
Coco was silent for a moment, meeting his eyes over her sunglasses… And then she let out a sigh, leaning back into her chair. Jaune watched in amazement as, for a moment, he could have sworn that her face was red… Wait, was Coco Adel embarrassed about something?!
"It's just… I had really kind of been hoping that you would just realise it on your own, but now that it's been like two whole months since we've started hanging out and you're still the dense idiot you always were…"
Jaune watched as Coco rifled through the desk behind her for a moment before pulling out a scrap of paper that looked old. The corners and edges were either torn or frayed, and the paper was yellowed in a way that only time could do to it… Or you could just use coffee and a small amount of fire. He'd helped his sisters with enough Cosplay to figure out how to artificially age paper.
There was a look of hesitation on Coco's face that Jaune wasn't used to seeing as she looked at the folded-up paper for a moment. It was as if she was trying to convince herself to do whatever it was that she had dragged him here for, and so Jaune let her be for the moment. She eventually let out a deep breath, and her arm shot out, offering the paper to him.
Jaune took it off of her tentatively, doing his best to be careful with it. It was clearly very important to Coco, something that was especially clear by the fact that she seemed to have kept it for so long… Perhaps that was why it felt like his whole world froze as he opened up the sheet of paper to see his own name on it, scrawled in yellow crayon alongside a couple of scribbles of two stick figures holding hands.
[Maredge Certificat - Jaune and Coco!]
And then, all of a sudden, he could remember why it felt like he had known Coco before...
"Jaune! Sign this!"
An eight-year-old Jaune smiled as Coco handed over the piece of paper she was holding to him, tapping intensely on a line down the bottom, where she had already signed her name with her orange crayon. He fumbled around for a moment to find his own crayon and wrote his name as best he could, it right next to hers.
"Okay, done! What does it mean?"
Coco smiled as she raised the paper over her head, doing a silly little dance. She spun in a circle, and the fancy dress she was wearing swished around with her. Jaune knew that she was usually dressed in something fancy because whenever they saw her, his sisters would tell him how 'fash-on-able' she was.
Stopping her spinning, Coco folded the paper up and shoved it into her pocket, grinning widely as she darted forward, wrapping him in a tight hug. "My mum says that this means we're married now! It means that you're mine forever now, and we'll get to have a big party like they did about it!
Jaune gasped at that, a smile coming onto his face. He returned the hug and squeezed her back, his grin wide. "Does that mean we should, like, hold hands and kiss and stuff like the adults do?"
Coco pulled back a little at that and scoffed at him as she shifted her hands to his shoulders. In a tone of voice that made it clear she thought he was silly for even asking that question, she nodded. "Of course, we should! We're married now, duh! That's how being married works, you know?"
Jaune just nodded at her words, as she was clearly entirely correct. Everyone he had known who was married kissed and stuff! He barely had any warning as Coco started to lean in towards him, making 'mwah' noises like the cartoons did on TV.
Before he could do anything to return it -he was just trying to mentally figure out how to kiss someone- there was a knock at Coco's door, and a voice came through it, slightly muffled by the wood. The girl shot back away from him like a gunshot, her face bright red as she stared at her door.
"Coco? Jaune's parents are here to take him home now, so say goodbye, sweety."
Jaune watched Coco's shoulders drop as she turned to him again, a pout on her face as she moved towards the door, leading him out. "Goodbye, Jaune… Can you promise me that you'll kiss me next time? Y'know, 'cause we're married?"
Jaune understood why she wouldn't want to now, because kissing in front of other people -especially her mum- would be crazy embarrassing. So he just leaned in and hugged her again, nodding.
"Of course! Next time I see you, I'll kiss you for sure!"
Jaune stared at the paper, the fake marriage certificate he could now remember signing his name on when he was little, alongside his friend and -at the time- his crush, Coco…
And suddenly he realised why Coco seemed so upset with him. Soon after they signed the paper, Coco's family had to move away to the 'big city' because of her mother's work, and they didn't have any kind of way to get in touch with each other anymore.
And after a while, Jaune had just… Grown up. It had been ten years since Coco's family had left Domremy, and in that time, his thoughts had shifted to other things, like becoming a Huntsman, even if his family weren't exactly supportive of that idea…
His head raised to look at her with wide eyes, and he could see that she was trying to keep up her cool appearance as if she wasn't blushing madly, fidgeting, and twiddling her thumbs around each other in her seat. She was clearly nervous to see how he reacted, and a small smile grew on his face as another wave of memory slammed into him as he held the piece of paper in his hand.
"Coco, I… I'm an idiot, aren't I?"
Jaune moved over to her and leaned in close, wrapping his arms around her. She rose to her feet to make the hug less awkward and then just melted, a sigh of relief escaping her as she buried her face into his shoulder. Her sunglasses were digging into his skin a little, but that didn't matter right now.
"Maybe just a bit… Two months is a long while to still be an idiot, though. There was a part of me that almost wanted to see how long it would take you to realise, but it turns out that I am not a patient woman."
Jaune and Coco pulled back from each other for a moment, and Coco reached up to take off her sunglasses. Her eyes were a lovely orange, and they bore into him as if expecting something… He could remember the promise he had made to Coco all those years ago, but for a moment, he hesitated.
He had a massive crush on her back then, but it was a little-kid kind of crush. The kind where he had no clue what it meant or why he felt like it, and one that wouldn't lead anywhere because she probably didn't know either. It had been ten years since he had made that promise to kiss her…
But while he might not have the same crush on her as before, he had something better...
A crush on her now.
He'd tried his best not to develop one on her, especially so soon after his -unfortunately quite lengthy- string of epic failures with Weiss… Ever since they had started to hang out -again, as he now realised- Coco had consistently been one of the coolest, most charismatic, and charming people he knew…
And it didn't hurt that she had also grown up hot.
Really hot.
Like, damn.
He watched as her eyes closed, and her face moved a little closer… And he sent off a brief prayer to every god in existence as thanks for whatever stroke of luck it was that brought both of them to Beacon at the same time. He also suddenly realised that all of those errand runs she had brought him on were probably a wombo-combo attempt to make him remember her and her way of sneakily getting a date from him…
But that wasn't a bad thing.
His eyes closed as well as he leaned in, and suddenly, after ten years, Jaune got to fulfil his promise to Coco. They kissed for a while, a bit longer than Jaune thought he could hold his breath normally, and he felt Coco's hand wrap around the collar of his hoodie as she pushed him backwards.
He got a little lightheaded from the movement and the lack of oxygen, stumbling backwards and falling butt-first onto what was probably her bed. She released his lips after that, and when she looked into Jaune's eyes, he could see an intensity in them that reminded him of a predator staring down its prey.
Taking deep breaths, he realised that as they were well, Coco was currently straddling him. That might have been an embarrassing thing in any other scenario… If he wasn't too busy focusing on the fact that she was practically tearing his armour off of him, staring at his eyes the whole time.
"Jaune."
He felt a tingle go down his spine at the hunger in her voice, and gulped. "Uh, yes, Coco?"
Leaning in, she kissed him again, her hands gripping the sides of his face as she practically sucked the oxygen out of his lungs. By the time she was done, he was once again left breathless, staring up at her and wondering what kind of monster he had just unleashed upon himself.
"I'm going to remove our clothes now. And then, once we're done here, we're going to burn them. I can't have my new boyfriend looking anything but his best."
Jaune's eyes widened in realisation about what exactly she meant by that, enthusiastically nodding, only to pause after a moment and raise a hand. She raised an eyebrow at him in return, and he grinned. "Uh, we can't burn the hoodie. My little sister and I ate 50 boxes of Pumpkin Pete's for it, so it's special."
Coco stared at him for a moment, her hands already holding the bottom of her sweater as if she was about to lift it off herself, the look in her eyes as she stared down at him made it clear she was questioning her taste in men… Only for an amused smile to grow on her face as she shook her head.
She then pulled her top off, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't stop his eyes from latching onto her newly revealed assets. "Fine, the Rabbit-Hoodie can survive my purge. But I will tear those ripped jeans to shreds, and we'll go get you something that actually suits your frame."
Jaune blinked, finding that he didn't care about his outfit enough to have any sort of disagreement in this situation. Instead, he just smiled up at her in a way that he hoped wasn't as goofy as it felt, even if deep down, he knew it was.
"Yes, ma'am."
Coco just rolled her eyes, leaning down to kiss him again. He didn't know what kind of god-beloved saint he was in his previous life, but by the time she was done removing any oxygen he had within him, he felt like he just might be able to count his lucky stars. And then something hit him
"Wait… It was lunchtime, right? Don't we have to go back to our classes soon?"
Coco just pushed him down onto the bed, a look of disbelief on her face as she raised an eyebrow at him. "Jaune, I have waited 10 years and two months for this moment. I swear to the brother gods if you say that you'd rather go to class right now than stay here with me…"
Jaune waved his hand in front of him, smiling widely as he leaned up to her, wrapping her in a tight hug and allowing himself to fall back again, dragging her down with him. "Nope, just the last bit of idiot-Jaune leaving me, promise."
Coco just raised her eyebrow at him even further, a smirk on her face as she bumped her forehead into his own. "Maybe you can keep a little of idiot-Jaune. He's a touch charming… He had to have been, to get a girl like me in his arms. Just a little bit, though."
Jaune just laughed, pressing his forehead back into hers. His classes could wait, because right here, and right now, he'd rather deal with an angry Goodwitch than disappoint Coco by getting up and leaving.
And he had plenty of chances to prove it to her…
And so he did.
Just a silly little fun, fluffy oneshot of a ship I don't see much of!
Thank you for reading, and see you on Monday for more Goldfire Wyrm!
