IN DAVID'S CORNER

Mr. Hayes arrived back at his home in Chicago late night/early morning and tried to be very quiet so as not to wake his wife. His daughter was another matter. After finally hearing David Addison's acclimation of love for Maddie on the plane, he didn't understand, at all, what her problem was and why she was here. He was ready to rip Mr. Addison a new one when he got to LA, thinking he had no interest in taking care of Maddie and her baby, when really the opposite was true. He had never seen a man so broken as David or so in love either. Did Maddie not realize how he felt? "Well", "she's going to find out" and marched up the stairs.

Maddie was dozing off with an open book laying on her chest when she heard someone come into her room. She turned to see her father and said "Hi, Daddy". "How was your business trip"? Alexander Hayes pulled a chair up to Maddie;s bed and said plainly, "We have to talk". Maddie had seen that look on her father's face when she had been in trouble growing up. She didn't see it often but recognized it just the same. "Sure Daddy", she said, concerned he was going to get something off his chest she wouldn't like hearing.

"I am going to be honest with you Maddie, I didn't go on a business trip, I went to see your business partner and find out what his intentions were towards you and the baby". Maddie sat up straight, wide awake now, hearing this news. She looked at her father and said softly but sternly, "How could you"? Mr. Hayes retorted back, "How could I"? "My 36 year old daughter is living at my house again or should I say hiding at my house, pregnant, while the father is in LA.

Mr. Hayes was not going to tell Maddie that he knew that there was another man involved. All he wanted to do was plead David's case.

Maddie got out of bed and started pacing the floor. "So you went to see David, and what, pray tell, did he say"? She said in a snarky voice. "I found out he was missing for a few days and no one knew where he was". "Probably on some bender, if I had to guess". "You don't know him like I do, Dad". "He is very irresponsible".

Mr. Hayes had heard enough. "Maddie, I accused him of technically being a low life, unreliable, selfish human being who I didn't want for a son-in-law and the fact that he was the father of your baby sickened me". "I left him in a restaurant after saying those things to him and went to the airport". "My flight was stopping in Denver and he bought a round trip ticket to be on my plane so he could explain his feelings for you". "Do you want to know what he said"? Maddie stood there with her arms crossed and replied "By all means, what did David say".

"He said that he wants to grow old with you". That he had come to your door to tell you he loved you, wanted to marry you, offer you the moon but you didn't answer the door". Once again, Mr. Hayes did not offer the fact that there was another man there, as David had said. Maddie looked at her father, perplexed, at what she had just heard. She tried to think back to when this could have happened. She then remembered when Sam came to visit and she had thought she heard banging and her name being called but when she asked Sam the next morning, he said that she was dreaming. Could Sam have lied to her? Could he have known David was at the door and didn't want to tell her? Her feelings for Sam died at that moment.

Her father saw the distant look on Maddie's face and brought her back to attention. "He also said that when he found out you were pregnant he wanted to come out here to you but you told him to stay away". "That you weren't even going to tell him". "He said he waits, and waits because you tell him to, because he loves you, and is crazy about you". He took Maddie by the shoulders and said, "Maddie", "He then said with all sincerity, " He would give up his life for you". Maddie stared at her father hearing what she just heard and put her head in her hands and started sobbing. Mr. Hayes hugged his daughter, trying to comfort her. When Maddie stopped crying, she looked back up at her father who had softened his face. "Listen to me honey", "I'm a man and I know when a man is in love and this man is so in love with you that he can't see straight". "You have him so tied up in knots, he's afraid to make a wrong move". "Don't do that to him". "I changed my mind about him and I think you should too".

Maddie slumped onto her bed, her head spinning and her heart hurting. What had she done to him? She didn't mean to break him but that is exactly what she was doing. She thought back to all the words her father just said. "David would give up his life for me". She never knew the depth of his love but then again, she really never gave him the chance to show her.

Alexander Hayes was satisfied that he had pleaded David's case. David deserved the chance to prove to Maddie that he was a man that would live up to his obligations and take care of her. He knew in his heart that David would love her forever, now his daughter had to know it.

He kissed Maddie on the forehead and went to his own bedroom. Virginia Hayes was half asleep when he walked in. "How was your trip, dear"? "It was very enlightening", he answered". "I thought I heard you and Maddie talking", is she alright"? "Is everything okay"?

Alexander Hayes climbed into bed, kissed his wife and said "Hopefully, everything will be okay, now".

Maddie lied in her bed, rubbing her stomach, "David, David, David". She thought. The truth was she ran away from him because she realized how much she needed him and that frightened her. She never took into consideration that David may have needed her just as much. She suddenly knew what she had to do and sat up and picked up the phone. David had just started falling asleep when his phone rang. "Hello", He said in a groggy voice. "David", "I love you". David's eyes opened wide and his heart skipped a beat when he heard Maddie's voice. If she could only see the smile that was on David's face as he said "I love you too". Maddie then said the words he wanted to hear for months, "I'm coming home".
