The next time the wizards tried their luck with time travel was closer to the Easter break. After their second trip through time, all the year fours were completely immersed in studying. Tests and essays surrounded them from every side and didn't allow the students any chance of escape. When there were only a couple of days left before the Easter break and all the schoolwork was finally handed in, Scorpius Malfoy and Albus Potter began to plan their third trip into the past.
April that year was surprisingly warm, the weather pleasingly sunny. The boys were sitting near the Black Lake in the shade of a large tree and discussing their plan.
"So we have decided on the date: February 14, 1996. Now we need to determine the exact place where we should land," said Albus, looking down at their notes.
"Father said that they were walking along the main road from the outskirts of Hogsmeade. I think it would be best if we landed near the main entrance to Hogwarts. According to Father, they stayed there for quite a while, not wanting to say goodbye," answered Scorpius with a small smile.
"Perfect. Then, today, we will go to the past for the last time and finally see if our guesses are actually true or not." Albus confidently looked into his friend's eyes. "Are you ready?"
"One hundred per cent." Scorpius grinned.
"Then I suggest we don't waste time. I have the Cloak and the Time-Turner with me."
The boys got up from the ground and looked around, checking that they were alone. Albus opened his bag and took out the Time-Turner and the Cloak.
"Ready? Let's go!" said Albus, smiling broadly. He put the golden chain around their necks and threw the Cloak of Invisibility over their heads.
"Back to the past!" said Scorpius and smiled back.
The lake disappeared, and the next moment, the boys were standing near the main entrance to Hogwarts. The night was frosty, and the wizards wrapped the hems of their robes tighter around them. The sky was clear and the stars were sparkling brightly. The boys looked around and noticed a couple standing not far from them. The girl stood with her back to them, but even from there you could see the mop of her chestnut hair.
Scorpius looked closely at his father, noticing how alike they were. The boy had seen photographs of his father from his Hogwarts days, but this was a completely different feeling. The wizard smiled widely as he watched the picture unfold before him. Scorpius had never seen his father so happy. Draco literally glowed, emotions overflowing him. There was so much warmth and adoration in his eyes that Scorpius's soul filled with warmth.
"We need to get closer," whispered Albus. "We can't see the girl's face from this angle."
The young wizards carefully walked a couple of steps closer and stopped. The girl lifted her head from Draco's chest, and there was no doubt left now. It was clear as day that standing before them were Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger.
"It's definitely her," said Albus, peering into the girl's face. Hermione looked at Draco with an expression that Albus had never seen on the witch's face before. The Potters spent a lot of time with the Weasleys, and Albus saw Ron and Hermione together quite often. The way that the older wizards looked and smiled at each other always made Albus think, "Yeah, this is love." But now he realised just how wrong he was. The way Hermione Granger looked at Draco Malfoy? She had never looked at Ron Weasley this way. Standing here now, on this starry night, and seeing the young couple before him look at each other like there was no one else in the world except them? Seeing the tenderness with which Draco ran his fingers through Hermione's hair and how she pressed herself closer to him made Albus Severus Potter realise that this was what true love really looked like.
Albus spun the Time-Turner, and the couple standing before them disappeared in a blur. A moment later, the young wizards were standing next to the Black Lake again.
"Now there's absolutely no doubt," said Albus. He took the Invisibility Cloak off them and quickly put it and the Time-Turner into his bag. "It was definitely Hermione."
"Al, I have never seen my father so happy." Scorpius sat down on the grass and looked at the sky. "When we spent time together, I saw him smile, yes, but he never looked as alive as he did just then. He looked at Hermione with such love, touched her as if she were the most precious treasure in the world." Scorpius sighed and fell silent.
"Scorp, listen to me. I've never seen Hermione look so happy, either." Albus sat down next to his friend on the grass and looked into his eyes. "And, believe me, I see her quite often. The way she looked at your father back there? I never saw her look at anyone like that. All my life, I thought that Ron and Hermione had the same happy marriage as my parents did. Mum and Dad love each other so much that, I think, everyone can see it. I thought that Ron and Hermione were the same, but I was so wrong. I never took Rose's words seriously when she said that her parents fight very often and are not all that happy lately. I thought that every family went through this, and if people loved each other, these quarrels wouldn't get in the way of their happiness. But now - " Albus paused. "Scorpius, I think Hermione still loves your father."
"Even if that's true, we can't know for sure," said Scorpius sadly.
Both wizards sat in silence for some time, lost in their thoughts. Then, it dawned on Albus. He jumped up and said, "I think there is a way to find out!" Albus exclaimed joyfully.
"Really? How?" Scorpius asked his friend hopefully.
"Well, there is one person who definitely knows everything that is going on in Hermione Granger's heart." Albus smiled widely at his friend.
"Mrs Potter!" Scorpius exclaimed. "That's it!"
"I think it's about time we asked for help." Albus smiled.
The Easter break was here, and the boys were already sitting in the compartment of the Hogwarts Express, travelling home. Scorpius was counting down the minutes until he could finally talk to Mrs Potter, tell her how everything truly happened and explain the real reason his father had to break up with Hermione. Ginny would definitely know if her friend felt the same way as his father did. And if so, then maybe Mrs Potter could help Scorpius with his plan. Just a little while longer, and his father could finally be happy.
After all, it was never too late for life to begin anew. Everyone had the right to be happy, especially Draco and Hermione, with all the suffering they had endured. Love such as theirs couldn't simply disappear, even after the decades they'd been apart. That powerful feeling still lived inside them, locked behind a closed door and waiting for the moment when it could finally break free. True love could overcome anything standing in its way. If the love was real, its fire would not go out even after twenty years of imprisonment in the depths of a person's soul. This kind of love would flare up like a phoenix and rise from the ashes of pain and suffering because love of such magnitude could conquer everything.
Views of London were already flashing outside the train windows, which meant that very soon Ginny Potter would find out why her son needed a Time-Turner. Very soon, two broken hearts would have a second chance at happiness. Would they grab it with both hands or would they be afraid of change?
