This is a YGO/KHR cross, with the main pairing being fem Tsuna (Nadeshiko)/Yugi.
Solomon had to hide a massive grin when he saw the rather pretty, if quiet girl who entered his shop. He couldn't resist calling out to his grandson.
"Yugi, your girlfriend is here!"
He could heard the sound of his grandson all but bolting from the kitchen, a massive blush on his face.
"For the last time, she's not my girlfriend!" said Yugi embarrassed beyond belief. The blush on his face said he'd wish it were otherwise though.
Nadeshiko had a quiet smile on her face at the interaction. It was nice to see a healthy family relationship. She knew it was a stark contrast to her own toxic family.
"So which game have you come for today?" asked Solomon.
Nadeshiko discreetly looked over the wares.
"I was hoping you had some new Dungeons and Dragons manuals or figures," she admitted.
"Sadly no, the new manuals don't come in until next week. Maybe Yugi can help you find something else to interest your club?" said Solomon, winking at his grandson. Yugi's face was beet red. However he did cast a discreet glance towards Nadeshiko with a hopeful look.
She smiled, which didn't help his blush.
"I'd like that. Maybe we could test a few games to see if the others would like them too?" she suggested.
Yugi looked ready to faint on the spot. He knew full well most of the club were shipping the two of them, but then again Nadeshiko had several fans in and out of the club.
Still, it was a fun three hours that he got to spend with her solo, which made his night.
That high lasted until the next day, when Ushio decided to target him for his little "protection" scam.
Yugi couldn't help but step in, seeing Jounouchi and Honda about to get beaten black and blue. He felt the first punch, but had to blink when the second never came, despite Ushio making it clear he planned to beat the hell out of Yugi for daring to stand up for himself.
Yugi couldn't help but stare in disbelief as his not-so-secret crush was holding Ushio's fist in her hand, looking very disapproving.
"You okay, Yugi?" she asked.
"Nadeshiko-kaichou?" said Yugi in shock.
Jounouchi and Honda stared at him, mostly in disbelief he knew such a cute girl who had apparently come looking for him.
"I had a feeling you were going to be late for today's meeting. So I came to find you."
Yugi was well aware of her "bullshit sixth sense" according to the club members. She never lost at poker nights and had been explicitly banned from most card games that involved the standards fifty-two card decks.
He didn't think it applied to things outside games though.
"Who the fuck are you?" demanded Ushio. "If you want to pay for the twerp's debt, I'd be more than happy to work out a...payment...plan."
The leer he gave Nadeshiko made Yugi's skin crawl. It also served to piss her off, and Yugi couldn't help but make a silent prayer for leniency for Ushio-san. He didn't bother with mercy, because he knew damn well that Nadeshiko did not tolerate perverts and creeps, especially in their club.
Yugi caught the first aid kit Nadeshiko tossed him, and turned his back on the scene he knew was coming.
"Uh, Yugi?" said Jounouchi. He was baffled as to why the smaller teen was bandaging up their wounds rather than try to help.
"Nadeshiko-kaichou has a zero tolerance for creeps," said Yugi. As if that explained everything. It didn't.
However the two taller boys realized what Yugi meant when she pulled out a collapsible staff...and proceeded to beat the shit out of Ushio.
Ushio had death in his eyes, glaring at Yugi.
"So...how do you know this cutie?" asked Jounouchi. He showed nothing but respect for her, for obvious reasons.
"Nadeshiko-kaichou is the president of the after-school gamer club I'm part of," said Yugi brightly. "She's also the unofficial big sister of the younger members, and has a zero tolerance to creeps and perverts."
"Yugi is one of the rare males in the club who hasn't gotten a reprimand from me yet," said Nadeshiko. She knew perfectly well that he had a crush on her.
Nadeshiko had an odd look on her face when she saw the shiny gold pendant Yugi had on two days later for the next meeting.
"That the puzzle you've been trying to put together for five years now?"
Yugi nodded happily.
Nadeshiko eyed the thing warily.
There was something about it that was causing her sixth sense to go haywire and warning her something was off about it.
Nadeshiko stared down Jounouchi, who had recently joined the gearhead club she was part of.
"I know you," he said in recognition.
"You're one of the boys who was there when that idiot tried to harass Yugi," she said. "Jou...something."
"Jounouchi," he supplied.
Nadeshiko eyed him for a moment. While she wasn't the president of this club, she was a respected senior member. Mostly because it wasn't a proper club to begin with.
"What exactly are you trying to learn here?" she asked.
"I want to earn some money," said Jounouchi. "I heard this place hired part-timers under eighteen."
"Close, but not exactly true," she corrected. "In reality the owner of the garage allows those who have an actual knack or genuine interest in learning how to build, maintain and fine-tuning engines and other machines to come here and use his shop to practice their craft. We pay him for use of his tools and space."
Jounouchi slumped at that.
"However," she said, waiting for him to perk up. "The owner does allow us to help with his actual business, so long as they sign the contract that makes it clear we are only allowed to work on a set amount of machines per month. Officially it's a loose apprenticeship contract, but we are permitted to earn commissions."
"How does that work out?" asked Jounouchi, scratching his head.
"Most places that hire mechanics aren't interested in fresh out of high school kids who have no actual experience, especially in Japan," she said dryly. "However they do at least show some interest in people who have not only experience, but a glowing recommendation that comes from a completed apprenticeship. It means we at least know the basics and can be trusted."
It had been Nadeshiko's idea, actually. The shop owner hadn't been interested in renting space for the 'club', but he had been having trouble maintaining a crew. So they came up with a compromise.
Kids with an actual passion or skill towards mechanics were able to learn their craft under an experienced mechanic, as well as claim a legitimate apprenticeship which would look better to any employers later. The mechanic had a cheap crew that he could hire for a much lower price than a licensed mechanic that actually wanted to work.
Sure, he had to fill out some forms and have inspectors come to check and make sure everything was in order a bit more often, but otherwise it was a deal that worked out for everyone involved.
Everyone saw how Nadeshiko took the new guy under her wing, and said nothing. It was well known she had an eye for talent and anyone who trained under her soon rose in the unofficial ranks of their group.
In the span of a few hours, Nadeshiko quietly talked to Jounouchi, sizing him up. It took only thirty minutes for her to realize he was much like someone else she knew, only he was the elder of the two.
Clearly, Jounouchi was an abused puppy looking for a strong master.
While he was a nice enough boy, they simply weren't in sync enough to try. Yugi though...there might be a chance there. He used to be dormant, but recently she had noticed he started to feel like he was borderline active.
Far be it for her to not encourage that sort of symbiotic relationship.
"So...any idea why Yug' has been having so many blackouts?" said Jounouchi, once they had cleaned up.
"What."
Jounouchi flinched at the sudden protective fire in her eyes.
"Yugi has been having weird blackouts," said Jounouchi. "It's like he's a completely different person, and he has no idea of what happened when we ask about it after."
"Are you absolutely certain?" she asked, and Jounouchi felt an unexpected pang of pity for anyone who pissed her off.
He nodded.
He had the distinct feeling that someone was going to be in for it, and was heartily glad he had befriended Yugi before she found out about their pranks against him.
Shadi was aware of the fact that the child had awakened the spirit in the Puzzle, but likely had no awareness of the fact.
Summoning the boy's best friend to test him was nothing. He had to know the strength of the boy's resolve.
He was not expecting a young woman of mixed origin. She had neck-length brown hair that was the color of cinnamon. She had warm amber colored eyes that were hidden behind a pair of glasses which gave her a mature, refined look. She wore a school uniform that spoke of money and influence. He was unaware of which one, nor did he care of the significance of the crest.
More importantly was the aura. There was no mistaking that this was a Queen who was merely waiting to claim her throne. One in which a King was unnecessary.
He fully expected her to pick up the Puzzle and to challenge the spirit. He could sense the child's soul waiver in the presence of the queen.
Instead she narrowed her eyes at the spirit, before she glared at Shadi directly.
She cast a glance towards the figure of the girl he was holding hostage and her expression turned furious.
There was a low growl that emanated from her, and the spirit openly flinched.
"You, I'll deal with second," she snapped to the spirit. He nodded slowly, knowing better than to argue. "Is this idiot the one holding her hostage?"
He nodded, not willing to trust his voice.
Shadi should have trusted his instincts and run. Not that it would have helped much, but it would have been nice to try.
The girl walked towards the unconscious hostage, and to the complete shock of the men, sent a wave of ice that solidified the board to the building. Even if the dolls holding the girl up shattered, the board would not fall.
She turned to glare at Shadi, her expression angry.
"I do not approve of fools like you involving innocent parties when it comes to tests like this."
Shadi felt a shiver of fear go down his spine. And it had nothing to do with the chill emanating from the ice.
She cracked her knuckles, and her expression was almost serene to the point it terrified both males. The spirit was relieved that the bulk of her anger was not directed at him.
Fortunately, Anzu woke up enough to get far, far away from the edge of the board and back onto solid ground. However the spirit knew he would need to have a long, likely painful chat with the queen who had helped him. He did not want to end up like that other fool who pissed her off.
"How are you unaffected by the spell he used?" asked the spirit, confused. Because from what he could tell, the test was to see how strong their bond was.
"One, I was sleeping when he pulled that. Two, he clearly hasn't encountered someone already trained in how to use soul fire, and this spell is clearly spiritually based. I'm astral projecting," she said shrugging. The spirit was openly fascinated. "That doesn't mean you're getting out of that talk though."
"I understand, my queen," he said with a polite bow and a cocky smirk.
She blinked at that, before rolling her eyes.
A few days later...
Yugi felt oddly sleepy. One minute he was chatting animatedly with Nadeshiko, the next he blacked out.
Nadeshiko was not pleased, even if the spirit inside the puzzle was finally making an appearance around her.
"So. You're the reason behind these odd blackouts."
"Yes, my queen," he replied with a smile.
"Why do you keep calling me that?"
"Your aura is too refined for a mere princess," said the spirit. "Your aura speaks of a Queen who reigns because she is strong, not because she has a King."
She was not blushing, and she would adamantly deny that fact if asked.
"So, why has Yugi been blacking out, and give me one good reason I shouldn't throw that damn puzzle off the nearest boat into the ocean?" she said.
The spirit was quiet for a moment.
"I cannot remember who I am. Yugi's soul has been...stabilizing...my own, but he isn't ready to handle sharing the full burden of my power. His blackouts are his mind protecting him from the brunt of it."
She stared him down.
"So basically you're scared and lashing out, and to protect him from what you're doing his mind has been putting him into a protective shell until you retreat back into your own space."
The spirit nodded.
Nadeshiko sighed.
"This is such a damn mess," she commented. "I don't approve of the fact you're sharing the same body as my best friend, but since you've been more protective than anything I'll let it slide...for now. If you ever hurt him though, I will not hesitate to destroy you."
"Understandable," he agreed readily.
"Until then, we'll need a name to call you," she said.
He perked up to that.
"Ombra," she said after a moment.
"Ombra?" he repeated.
"It's Italian for shadow," she explained.
He seemed rather pleased by his new name.
