Chapter 6: Meant to be
Paul pov
Electric blue eyes stared at the night sky as thunder cracked.
Lighting struck in the distance and He felt power.
He had always felt that way when lighting and thunderstruck. Ever since he was a child, Storms didn't scare him, they...intrigued him. He felt safe in storms as if they were protecting him. His sire would often scold him whenever he stood out in the storms but Paul never listened.
He stretched as the river began to speed up and become bumpy. Turning around, he watched the female sleep, her soft cries filling the air.
He quickly curled around her, covering her with his scent.
She was his female whether she knew it or not. His desire for her started a year ago. It began with a simple act of kindness.
Flashback:
Paul stood in line for his coffee before work. He normally had his latte at home but he had been so busy he didn't get a chance to make it. So here he is, waiting for the line to move.
"one large expresso with cold foam please." He ordered as he took out the bills.
As Paul looked up at the waitress, he internally groaned. He may not remember the girl's name but he knew her face. She had asked him out about a week ago and of course, he rejected her Unfortunately that would come to bite him in the butt.
"oh great…. it's you." she sneered.
"once again, one large expresso with cold foam," Paul repeated ignoring her.
"no. We have the right to refuse service to anyone we want. Now get out."
Paul arched an eyebrow and flashed a set of pearly whites.
"your just mad, I rejected you and now you're trying to get back at me. Which I should tell you is pathetic. Now you either make my coffee or have someone else make it but just know that you're going to have a line of angry customers because I am not moving."
The waitress sneered at him but turned to make his coffee.
…
As he was halfway to work, Paul was just about to drink his coffee when he heard a shout.
"Hey! Hey! Don't drink the coffee!" a woman's voice shouted.
Paul turned and was overwhelmed with the most intoxicating scent he ever smelled.
Pineapple and mangoes his favorite fruits.
The woman approached him without any fear, instead a look of concern and anger in her eyes.
Paul adjusted his shades and waited for her to catch her breath.
"Hi! Sorry! My name is Bella Swan! I work at the café you just left. Anyway, I overheard the conversation you had with my co-workers and first off I am so sorry for her attitude. Lauren can be so entitled. Anyway, I saw her put a bunch of Salt in your drink. So I remade your drink and threw in a free coffee cake. Once again, I apologize for that. Have a great day."
The woman began to walk away and Paul couldn't help but watch her butt sway as she did. However, he stopped her in her tracks.
"Why?" he questioned.
"Why what?" she as innocently. Paul felt his heart skip a beat as her doe brown eyes looked at him.
"why run..ten miles to find a stranger?"
Bella Shrugged and smiled. "cause it's the right thing to do. And no one deserves to be treated like that. Have a great day!"
And then she was gone.
From that moment on, Paul kept his eyes on Bella swan even if it was only from a distance.
End Flashback
"Paul.."
Paul lifted his head as his female called his name. He was quick to purr, sending comforting vibrations through her body.
He was dissatisfied, however, as he scented his female.
She was sick, and injured and his saliva could only heal the wounds outside her body. Not on the inside.
She groaned again and Paul curled around her a little tighter.
Just a little while longer, he could feel it.
….
"paul…. It's been 90 days. That's three months. Are we any closer to this destination?" His female asked hoarsely.
They left their raft on the river as Paul carried her on his back and into the dark forest.
His body was full of tension as he urged himself to go faster. His female had a fever and he could hear the fluid in her lungs.
She was sick and he needed to find her help immediately.
As they continued, his female urged him to stop.
"paul? Paul stop. Do you hear that?" she asked.
Paul stopped and listened to the sounds of the rainforest. It was then he heard the sounds of crying. Childlike crying.
With caution, Paul followed the sound and to their shock, sitting in a cave were two young children.
Of course, seeing them, the children backed up but Paul simply lay down in front of them. His female gently slid off his back.
"oh, you poor babies." She coughed. With slow and gentle movement, his female motioned the children to come to her.
After much hesitation, they approached her and she guided them to sit next to him.
One of the children said something and to his surprise, Paul understood every word.
"olha! é um leopard" Look it's a leopard.
"Você acha que é como os de casa?" Do you think its like the ones at home?
"talvez. Mas por enquanto eu acho que estamos seguros! os espíritos os enviaram eu simplesmente sei disso." maybe. But for now I think were safe! the spirits sent them I just know it.
Paul let out a purr as the children talked. Looking over at his female he became distressed because her breathing was shallow.
He stood in urgency, gently nudging the children to stand. He then slid his female onto his back, motioning the children to do the same. Once all three of them were settled, Paul took off.
Morning couldn't wait.
…..
It was twilight when the pull became unbearable. He was close!
"maria olha! são os campos de café! estamos em casa!" maria look its the coffee fields were home!
Paul felt relief run through him as the children confirmed what he already knew. Safety was just through those fields.
However, that relief was short-lived as he felt the ominous presence above him.
Looking up, Paul spotted two red-eyed vampires.
In haste, he knelt and ushered the two children off of him. Pushing his weak female toward them.
The two children sensed the danger and practically dragged his female with them. However, his female pushed them away.
"go!" she shouted to them. She then stood on weakened legs, a look of determination on her face.
"I am not going anywhere, Paul. We fight together or we die together."
Paul couldn't help but feel a wave of pride run through him.
...
Carlos carried his sister on his back as he saw his home just in the distance. But it wasn't the warmth of home that fueled his urgency, it was the fact that the vampires that had been tormenting thier village for years were possibly going to be killed or that the vampires were going to kill his rescuers.
Either way, he had to get help. He could only hope he got there fast.
The twelve-year-old was exhausted by the time he reached Village but that didn't stop him from screaming.
"AJUDA! AJUDA! ALGUÉM NOS AJUDE!" HELP! HELP! SOMEONE HELP US!
Immediately lights were turned on and villagers were coming out to see what the problem was.
Carlos pushed through the crowd of villagers as he laid eyes on his grandfather.
"Avô! Vampiros! Vampiros em nossa terra!"Grandfather! Vampires! Vampires on our land!"
As soon as the word vampires left his mouth, the villagers gathered their torches. A small number of their toughest warriors gathered and began to shapeshift. Disappearing into the night.
Carlos could only hope they made it in time.
…
Meanwhile, Paul tore off the head of the female vampire while his female taunted the other with a bleeding forearm.
It was the perfect distraction. With all the energy he could, Paul launched himself at the vampire. Tearing its head clean off.
However, even in his victory, he felt a searing pain shoot up his leg. Looking down he realized he was bleeding.
And then he saw black.
