Chapter 32: Bonds Forged in Fire and Family

As the sun rose over the Hylia estate, Link stretched, feeling the warmth of Momo nestled against him. On the other side, Rukia was still sound asleep, her smaller frame curled up close to him, her breathing soft and steady. It was a scene that had become all too familiar over the past weeks.

Rukia and Soi Fon had made themselves regular visitors, often alternating nights between the two Hylians. Soi Fon found a unique comfort in Momo's radiant warmth, while Rukia, despite her initial hesitations, had grown quite fond of Link's unconscious tendency to pull her close in his sleep.

But this morning was different.

A knock on the door echoed through the house, pulling Link out of his drowsy state. He gently nudged Momo awake, whispering that he'd handle it. Sliding out of bed without disturbing Rukia, he made his way to the front door.

Standing there, stoic and imposing as ever, was Byakuya Kuchiki.

"Lord Kuchiki," Link greeted, bowing slightly. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?"

Byakuya stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his eyes scanning the house. "We need to talk."

Link nodded, leading him to the sitting area. Once they were seated, Byakuya wasted no time getting to the point.

"My sister," he began, his tone as cold as ice, "has spent far too many nights here. While I have tolerated this arrangement thus far, it cannot continue without clarity."

Link straightened, sensing the gravity of the situation. "I assure you, Rukia is welcome here as a friend and ally. I mean no disrespect."

Byakuya raised a hand to silence him. "I am not questioning your hospitality. I am questioning your intentions."

Link blinked, caught off guard. "Intentions?"

"If you have no intention of making a formal proposal for Rukia's hand in marriage, then I will have no choice but to arrange meetings with suitors who have shown interest. One, in particular, has expressed a desire to challenge you, should it come to that."

Link frowned, his protective instincts flaring. "Challenge me? What does that mean?"

Byakuya's gaze was unwavering. "He believes you have overstepped your bounds, taking liberties with Rukia without committing to her future. He wishes to fight you for her hand."

Link's jaw tightened. He hadn't realized how far things had progressed between himself and Rukia, at least in the eyes of others. He glanced toward the hallway, where he could hear Momo and Rukia stirring.

"I never intended to disrespect Rukia or her family," Link said firmly. "But this is something I need to discuss with her. If she—"

Before he could finish, Rukia appeared in the doorway, her hair slightly tousled from sleep. She looked between the two men, her expression curious.

"Brother? What are you doing here?"

Byakuya stood, his composure unshaken. "Rukia, I am here to ensure your future is secure. You have spent an inordinate amount of time here, and the clan demands answers."

Rukia's cheeks flushed, but she stood her ground. "I'm here because I choose to be. Link and Momo have been nothing but kind to me."

"That is not the issue," Byakuya said sharply. "If you intend to remain here, it must be formalized."

Link stood as well, placing a calming hand on Rukia's shoulder. "We'll figure this out," he said, his voice steady.

Byakuya regarded them both for a moment before turning toward the door. "You have until the end of the month to make your decision, Link. If not, the clan will proceed with its plans."

With that, he left, leaving a tense silence in his wake.

Rukia turned to Link, her eyes wide with a mix of anger and embarrassment. "You don't have to do anything you don't want to," she said quickly. "This is my problem, not yours."

Link smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "It became my problem the moment you chose to stay here. We'll handle this together."

Momo appeared behind Rukia, her expression concerned. "What happened?"

Link sighed, pulling both women close. "We've got some decisions to make. But whatever happens, we'll face it as a team."

The three of them stood together, their bond stronger than ever, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

Link and Rukia departed the Hylia estate, their steps purposeful as they headed toward Squad 6's barracks to meet Byakuya. The matter of Rukia's potential suitors needed addressing, and Link was determined to find a way to delay or circumvent the process entirely. Meanwhile, Momo had stayed behind at home, her recent bout of nausea leaving her feeling too weak to join them.

As they approached the Squad 6 barracks, Renji intercepted them, his expression a mix of determination and frustration. He stepped in front of Link and Rukia, drawing the attention of nearby squad members.

"Link," Renji said firmly, his voice carrying authority, "I challenge you to a duel. If I win, you are never to speak to Rukia again. If you win, you can claim the right to marry her."

Rukia's eyes widened in shock. "Renji! You don't have the authority to make decisions about who I can or cannot speak to!" she snapped, her tone sharp with indignation.

Renji met her gaze but didn't falter. "I've already presented my case to Byakuya and the Kuchiki elders. I am your suitor by noble tradition, and it's my duty to ensure your future is secure. Link's interference ends here."

Before Rukia could argue further, Byakuya arrived, his serene expression unreadable. He stood silently, observing the unfolding scene.

Link glanced at Rukia, his voice calm yet resolute. "Rukia, do you want me to accept this duel?"

Rukia's cheeks flushed as her heart raced. She hesitated, searching his eyes for sincerity. "Are you sure, Link? Are you saying... you want me as your wife?"

Without hesitation, Link nodded. "Yes, I do. But only if it's what you want. And only after I make it clear to Renji that he doesn't get to dictate your choices."

Byakuya, intrigued by the scene, clapped his hands to gather everyone's attention. "The matter will be settled on Squad 6's training grounds," he announced, his authoritative voice silencing any murmurs among the gathered Soul Reapers. "Let the duel be witnessed by all. It will determine whether noble traditions or personal resolve triumphs."

The crowd followed Byakuya as he led the group to the training grounds. Squad members whispered among themselves, eager to see the duel that would decide not just the future of one of their own but also the fate of a bold outsider who dared to challenge Soul Society norms.

As the duel began, the atmosphere was electric with tension. Link turned to Byakuya, his expression calm but focused. "What are the rules?" he asked, his voice carrying across the training grounds.

Byakuya stood with his hands clasped behind his back. "You may use any and all skills or techniques at your disposal. However, lethal strikes are forbidden. This is a matter of resolve, not life and death."

Both Renji and Link nodded in acknowledgment. Byakuya raised his hand and let it fall, signaling the start of the duel.

Renji wasted no time. "Bankai! Hihio Zabimaru!" he shouted, unleashing the full power of his weapon. The massive, snake-like construct roared to life, its segmented body glinting menacingly in the light as it surged toward Link.

Link, unimpressed, sighed and sheathed the Master Sword. He reached into his pouch, pulling out the Megaton Hammer, its head glowing faintly with the immense power it held. As the colossal form of Zabimaru descended upon him, Link waited, standing still and unfazed.

When the weapon was mere feet away, Link swung the hammer with a devastating force. The impact sent a massive shockwave rippling through the air, traveling up the entire length of Zabimaru. The segments of the snake-like sword shattered under the force, crumbling into pieces as gasps erupted from the spectators.

Renji stumbled back, his connection to his bankai severed momentarily. He gritted his teeth, gripping the hilt of his weapon tightly as Link began to walk toward him, his steps deliberate and heavy.

Link's normally calm demeanor had been replaced by a quiet fury. Renji's arrogance and disrespect toward Rukia had pushed him too far. Reaching into his pouch again, Link retrieved the shimmering golden gauntlets, slipping them on with precision.

"Apologize," Link said, his voice cold and commanding. "Apologize to Rukia for thinking you had the right to control her life."

Renji's pride flared. "Never!" he spat, lunging forward with a punch aimed at Link.

Link sidestepped effortlessly, his reflexes honed to perfection. In one fluid motion, he caught Renji's arm, lifted him into the air, and tossed him skyward with inhuman strength. The crowd gasped as Renji soared high above the training grounds, his form silhouetted against the sun.

Before Renji could comprehend what had happened, Link pulled out his hookshot. With a precise aim, he fired it upward, the chain latching onto Renji. With a sharp tug, Link yanked him back down with incredible force, meeting him mid-fall with a crushing punch to the stomach.

The impact echoed across the grounds as Renji hit the ground hard, gasping for air before falling unconscious.

The training grounds fell silent, save for the murmurs of the onlookers. Link stepped back, brushing the dust off his tunic, and looked toward Byakuya.

Byakuya's expression was unreadable, but he nodded once. "The victor is clear."

Link turned to Rukia, his expression softening. "Are you okay?"

Rukia, still blushing from the intensity of the duel, nodded and smiled. "I'm fine, Link. Thank you."

As the medics arrived to tend to Renji, the crowd began to disperse, whispers of admiration for Link's strength and character filling the air. Byakuya stepped forward, regarding Link with a newfound respect.

"It seems," Byakuya said, his tone neutral but with a hint of approval, "that you are more worthy of standing beside Rukia than I initially believed."

Link bowed his head slightly. "Thank you. But this isn't about worth. It's about respecting her choices."

Byakuya said nothing more, turning and walking away. Link and Rukia exchanged a glance before heading home, their bond now stronger than ever.

As Link and Rukia made their way back to the Hylia estate, Link glanced at her, his expression filled with a mix of curiosity and concern. "Rukia," he began hesitantly, "are you really okay with me being your suitor and… potentially your husband?"

Rukia paused for a moment, then turned to face him with a soft smile. Instead of answering immediately, she leaned in and kissed him gently on the lips. Pulling back, she looked into his eyes. "I've never been more certain of anything," she said, her voice steady but warm. "I've been hoping you'd ask, even if Renji hadn't tried to make a fool of himself."

Relieved, Link smiled back. "I was planning to, but I guess Renji's antics sped things up a little," he admitted with a chuckle.

As they reached the front door of the estate and pushed it open, they were met with an unexpected sight—Captain Unohana standing in the entryway, her serene presence filling the room.

"Captain Unohana?" Link asked, his tone immediately shifting to concern. "What brings you here? Is Momo alright? She wasn't feeling well earlier."

Unohana's lips curved into a gentle smile, and she clasped her hands calmly in front of her. "Lady Momo is perfectly fine," she assured him, her tone soothing. "However, I wanted to inform you personally, Lord Hylia. Congratulations are in order. Your wife is expecting your first child."

The room seemed to freeze for a moment. Link's eyes widened in shock, and Rukia gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

"P-Pregnant?" Link stammered, the weight of the news slowly sinking in.

Unohana nodded, her smile unwavering. "Indeed. Lady Momo is in excellent health, though she will need ample rest in the coming weeks. The heir to the Hylia family is on the way."

Link's initial shock melted into a mix of joy and awe. "I… I don't even know what to say," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.

Rukia placed a hand on his shoulder, beaming. "Say you're happy, you big lug! You're going to be a father!"

"I am," Link said, his voice firming up as a radiant smile spread across his face. "I couldn't be happier."

Unohana inclined her head slightly. "I'll leave you to share this moment with Lady Momo. Remember, ensure she avoids unnecessary stress, and provide her with plenty of rest and care. I'll check in on her again soon."

With that, the Captain departed, leaving Link and Rukia to process the life-changing news.

Inside the house, they found Momo sitting on the couch, her hands lightly resting over her stomach. Her cheeks flushed as she saw them enter, a shy smile playing on her lips.

"Momo," Link said softly, approaching her and kneeling down. He took her hands in his. "Why didn't you tell me?"

Momo glanced down, her blush deepening. "I wanted to surprise you," she said quietly. "But Captain Unohana… well, she kind of stole the moment."

Rukia laughed lightly and sat beside her. "It doesn't matter how we found out, Momo. What matters is that we're all so happy for you—and for us."

Link placed a hand gently over hers, his touch warm and reassuring. "You've made me the luckiest man in all the realms," he said earnestly. "I'll do everything I can to protect you and our child."

Tears welled up in Momo's eyes as she leaned forward to kiss him. "I know you will," she whispered.

Rukia smiled at the scene, her heart full. "Looks like we'll need to get ready for a much busier house," she teased, her voice light but affectionate.

The three of them sat together in that moment, their bond stronger than ever. Though challenges lay ahead, they faced them with love and a growing sense of family that made them unstoppable.
