Chapter 33: A Timeless Call to Arms
Months had passed since the joyous revelation of Momo's pregnancy. Link had devoted himself entirely to ensuring her comfort, attending to her every need, and making plans for his upcoming wedding to Rukia. Life in the Hylia estate had been peaceful, a welcome reprieve from the battles and struggles they had faced.
One afternoon, as Link sparred with Rukia in preparation for her final Shinigami captain proficiency exams, a familiar figure approached the estate. Kisuke Urahara, with his ever-present fan and enigmatic grin, arrived unannounced, catching the pair by surprise. His demeanor, however, quickly turned serious as he explained his purpose.
Urahara revealed that he had developed a method to restore Ichigo Kurosaki's lost powers in the World of the Living. However, there was a complication—a powerful enemy had emerged, one with the ability to manipulate and alter the past. This enemy, Urahara explained, was unlike any they had encountered. Its power threatened the delicate balance of time itself, and if left unchecked, it could unravel history.
"I recalled something you said, Link," Urahara began, looking at the Hylian warrior. "You called yourself the Hero of Time. If there's anyone who can stand against this enemy, it's you."
Link furrowed his brow, his hand instinctively moving to the hilt of the Master Sword. He glanced at Rukia, who gave him an encouraging nod.
"What do you need me to do?" Link asked, his voice resolute.
Urahara explained the mission: Link would accompany him to the World of the Living, hidden from everyone, even Ichigo, until the time was right. Link's unique abilities and his connection to the flow of time would be instrumental in countering this new threat.
"Prepare yourself, Link," Urahara said. "This isn't just another battle. This will be a long and arduous journey, one where patience and precision will matter just as much as strength."
Link turned to Rukia. "Take care of Momo while I'm gone," he said softly.
Rukia placed a hand on his shoulder. "We'll be here waiting for you, Link. Just make sure you come back."
With that, Link began his preparations, his mind already turning to the unknown challenges ahead. He had faced many foes and trials in his life, but this time, the stakes were higher than ever. Time itself was at risk, and as the Hero of Time, he would rise to the challenge.
Link adjusted to life in the World of the Living under Urahara's guidance. The device Urahara had provided allowed him to stay invisible to most, ensuring he could observe and act without being detected. Only those wearing the specially crafted glasses could see him, and Urahara had made sure they were in the possession of only trusted allies.
Link's primary task was to monitor Ichigo Kurosaki from a distance, noting his interactions and the individuals who came into his life. Urahara had emphasized the importance of not revealing himself to Ichigo or interfering unless absolutely necessary.
One evening, as Link stood atop a building watching Ichigo's interactions with a group of unfamiliar individuals, Urahara arrived and handed him a file containing information about one particular figure—Kugo Ginjo.
"This man," Urahara began, tapping the file, "is a dangerous figure from Soul Society's past. He's the first Substitute Shinigami, but his history with the Gotei 13 is... complicated. Ginjo is a manipulator and a master of deception. We suspect he has his own agenda with Ichigo, one that could destabilize everything we're trying to protect."
Link examined the file, his expression stern. "What do you want me to do if he makes a move on Ichigo?"
Urahara shook his head. "Nothing. Not yet. Ginjo is like a shadow—if he senses you're onto him, he'll disappear again. We've been tracking him for years, but he always manages to slip through our grasp. The key is to let him think he's in control until we can strike."
Link frowned but nodded. "And the one who can manipulate the past?"
Urahara's gaze turned somber. "That one's a mystery, even to me. But Ginjo and this new enemy are connected—I can feel it. Keep watching, Link. Watch Ichigo, watch Ginjo, and wait. Your time will come."
As days turned into weeks, Link followed Ichigo closely, observing his interactions with Ginjo and the other Fullbringers. He noted their attempts to recruit Ichigo, their methods of gaining his trust, and the subtle ways they tried to manipulate him.
Despite his training and his warrior's patience, Link found it difficult not to act. Seeing Ichigo's confusion and the growing tension made him want to step in and help, but Urahara's words echoed in his mind.
"Timing is everything, Hero of Time. Act too soon, and the future will unravel."
The stage was being set for a confrontation that could change everything. And as Link continued his silent vigil, he knew that his role in this unfolding drama was just beginning.
Link had been quietly observing from the shadows, watching the chaos unfold. Xcution had systematically dismantled Ichigo's world, turning his friends and family against him through Tsukishima's manipulative abilities. Ginjo had positioned himself as Ichigo's sole ally, manipulating his growing despair and pulling him deeper into their web.
The tension reached its peak in Tsukishima's mansion. Uryu arrived, exposing Ginjo as the one who had attacked him, causing Ichigo's fragile trust to shatter. Injured but cunning, Ginjo saw an opening and moved to strike Ichigo from his blind spot.
Suddenly, the sharp clang of steel against steel rang out. A powerful force deflected Ginjo's blade, sending him stumbling back. The room fell silent as the figure responsible stepped forward—a man clad in green and armed with a glowing blade.
Ichigo's eyes widened in recognition. "Link?!"
Hearing his name, Link turned to Ichigo, his expression calm but resolute. "Ichigo," he said, his voice steady, "are you hurt?"
Ichigo froze, his mind racing. He recognized Link as someone who had helped him before, but with everything that had happened, doubt clouded his thoughts. "What... what are you doing here? Are you with them?" Ichigo's voice was shaky, a mixture of confusion and suspicion.
Ginjo frowned, his eyes narrowing as he studied Link. "And who the hell are you supposed to be?" he spat, clearly irritated at the sudden interference.
Link didn't answer Ginjo. Instead, his gaze remained locked on Ichigo, his tone unwavering. "I'm here to help you. That's all you need to know right now."
Ginjo scoffed, gripping his blade tighter. "You think you can just show up and play the hero? This is between me and Ichigo. Stay out of it if you know what's good for you."
Link's eyes finally shifted to Ginjo, his calm expression hardening. "You've done enough damage," he said firmly. "This ends now."
Ginjo smirked, dismissing Link with a wave of his hand. "Bold words for someone I've never even heard of. But fine, if you want to die protecting him, be my guest."
Ginjo lunged at Link, his blade slicing through the air with deadly precision. Link didn't flinch. Instead, he raised the Master Sword with practiced ease, effortlessly parrying Ginjo's strike. Sparks flew as their blades collided, the force of the impact sending shockwaves through the room.
Ichigo stepped back, his thoughts a whirlwind of uncertainty. He had trusted Ginjo once, only to be betrayed. Could he trust Link now? The last time they'd met, Link had fought alongside him, but Ichigo's world had been turned upside down since then.
"Link..." Ichigo said hesitantly, his voice barely audible over the clash of steel. "Why are you here? Are you really on my side?"
Link glanced over his shoulder, meeting Ichigo's gaze. "I am," he said simply, his voice steady. "I always have been."
Ichigo's chest tightened at the words. He wanted to believe him, but the lingering doubt refused to fade completely.
Ginjo snarled, his frustration mounting as Link continued to counter his every move. "You're starting to piss me off!" he growled, launching a flurry of attacks.
Link, unfazed, pushed Ginjo back with a powerful strike, sending him skidding across the floor. He then turned fully to Ichigo, his gaze firm. "Stay behind me. This fight isn't yours anymore."
Ichigo hesitated, still unsure of what to think, but something about Link's presence—a calm, unwavering confidence—sparked a faint glimmer of hope in his heart. For the first time in what felt like ages, he allowed himself to believe he wasn't entirely alone.
