Chapter 16: Insecurity

Mount Justice December 5, 17:04 EST

Artemis arrived through the Zeta tube to see the rest of the team standing around both Green and Red Arrow. "Artemis, just in time, look who's agreed to join the team." Green Arrow said, gesturing to Red Arrow who turn to glance at her. "Finally." Wally said happily.

Artemis looked unamused. "Sure, the team could use a 'real' archer." She said sarcastically. Wally looked sheepish and Joshua elbowed him making him wince.

Green Arrow cleared his throat, drawing everyone's attention. "Alright people listen up." He said as a holo keyboard appeared and he started typing on it. "The dynamic duos on a case in Gotham but Batman gave me a heads up." Artemis's eyes widened as an image of Sportsmaster popped up.

"Sportsmaster was spotted going through an airport in New Orleans." Green Arrow explained. "In full costume, nervy." Zatanna said, her tone filled with sarcasm. "In street clothes, Face I.D. recognized him, find out what he's up to." Green Arrow ordered.

"All of us, kinda feels like overkill for a shadow job." Conner said crossing his arms. "Perhaps a small squad, Miss M's camouflaging seems ideal." Red tornado suggests.

"True, but I thought the sidekicks, sorry Ex-sidekicks could suit up on this. Aqualad, Kidflash, Red Arrow." Green Arrow said making the three smirk at each other. Artemis looked down at those words getting Joshua to look sympathetic.

"Good, stakeouts make me crazy." Connor said. "What doesn't make you crazy?" Joshua asked earning a small glare from his fellow clone. "We could use the night off." M'gann said getting smiles from the two clones.

"I want in." Artemis stated getting everyone to turn and look at her. "With M'gann and Robin out, no ones logged in more hours piloting the bioship." "Artemis are you sure." Green Arrow asked. "Absolutely." She said unfazed.

Later in the cave, Joshua, Connor, M'gann, Zatanna, Wolf, and Fang were walking back into the briefing room.

"I don't know about you guys but my boredom is bored." Zatanna said as the group came to a stop behind Red Tornado. "Red Tornado, you got any good stakeouts for us?" Connor asked while rubbing the back of his head. "Yeah, just sitting around the cave is making us really anxious." Joshua said, stretching his arms.

"I do not, you must find a way to amuse yourselves." Red Tornado said flying up to his room. The teens all looked up at the entrance together.

"That's Red Tornadoes room, right?" Zatanna asked. "Yeah, it is." M'gann answered. "But he doesn't need to eat, or sleep, or change clothes, or well… anything." Zatanna says stating the obvious. "So." Connor said. "Please don't say what I think your gonna say." Joshua said glancing at Zatanna. "So, what does he do up there?" She asked with smirk. Joshua shook his head and chuckled. "you said it."

New Orleans Parish, December 5th 21:27 CST

Sportsmaster, who was out of costume, got into a speed boat and sped down the river while the team followed behind.

"Targets heading north." Red Arrow said as he jumped into a bush and came out on a jet ski. "Pursue, but maintain a discrete distance. That goes double for you Artemis, Sportsmaster's proven that he can detect Martian camouflage when in motion." He said, distrust obvious in his tone.

Sportsmaster stopped the boat in a marsh, he then jumped out of his boat and walked into the woods near the shore. "He stopped, hold your positions. I'm moving in for a closer look." Red Arrow ordered.

Artemis didn't listen, she drop out of the bioship and stayed hidden as she and Red Arrow watched Sportsmaster.

"Hey, sis." Artemis looked up to see Cheshire standing on a tree branch. "Long time no reveal who you are to all your friend's." She said, Artemis gripped her bow tighter. Cheshire jump off of the tree branch, sword raised above her head. Artemis shot two arrows at her in rapid succession but Cheshire slashed them both in half.

Cheshire went for another slash, but Artemis blocked it with her bow and kicked her sister back. "Nice, Did Canary teach you that?" Cheshire asked in a condescending tone. Artemis said nothing and notched another arrow.

"Bet you run out of arrows before I run out of sword, unless you plan on breaking out the pointy ones to use against your own sister." Cheshire said with a chuckle as she raised her sword in a guard. "Why shouldn't I, you are working with Sportsmaster!" Artemis nearly shouted. "Not by choice! Not my call!" Cheshire shouted back immediately. "Then who's call is it." Artemis asked, pulling her arrow back a little further. "Sorry, just because I know your secrets doesn't mean I'll tell you mine." Cheshire said as she fell into a stance.

Suddenly, a red arrow comes flying and explodes into a net that catches Cheshire and pins her the tree behind her. Red arrow walked up and notched another arrow.

"Why Arrow, if you wanted a rematch then you just had to ask." Cheshire said as if she wasn't being restrained.

"What, are you two dating or something?" Artemis asked Red Arrow in a sarcastic tone. "What, No." Red Arrow said, shocked that that's where her mind went. "Not us, the one you should be asking that question to is that tall, dark, and handsome Super friend of yours. Legend, right?"

Both Artemis and Red turned to Cheshire. Artemis's eyes widened in disbelief at her sisters words while Red's eyes narrowed in suspicion.

The two hero's aimed their bows at the assassin. "Want does Legend have to do with this?" Artemis asked in a dark tone. "A lot actually, since you thought that I was with Red here."

Unknown to the pair, Sportsmaster was listening to their conversation. "I hear you, keep them busy." He said as a train went by, a door opened on one of the train cars and a case was thrown at Sportsmaster.

Red and Artemis turned to see the train, the few seconds that they weren't looking was all it took, Cheshire cut the net and escaped. Both Red and Artemis aimed their bows at her again. "Really I'm so fond of you, well one of you at least, I couldn't bear to hurt you." Cheshire then stabbed her sword in the ground and cracked her knuckles. "Much."

Cheshire then ran at the two. Artemis and Red fired their arrows but Cheshire dodged and swept Artemis's legs making her fall to the ground. She then leaped back as Red Arrow notched another arrow, she threw three shuriken at Red's feet that exploded creating a smoke screen. When the smoke cleared Red looked back to the river to see Sportsmaster escaping in his speed boat. He was about to go after him but Cheshire jumped through the smoke. Cheshire landed on top of Red Arrow, pulled out a Sai and held it to his face. She pulled out a second Sai and stabbed them both into the ground around Red's wrists. Cheshire got off of Red as Artemis started to get up.

"Guess a loss is a loss." Cheshire said right before Kid Flash ran up and hit her with his shoulder. Cheshire was sent back a few feet. "And a Sai is just a Sai." Kid Flash said as he looked at one of the Sai in his hands. "And now it's a souvenir."

Red saw Sportsmaster getting into a speed boat. "Artemis, tracer arrow on Sportsmaster, now!" Red yelled and Artemis wasted no time in notching the arrow and taking aim. Unfortunately the vegetation got in the way and Sportsmaster was getting away.

Artemis growled as she lowered her bow. "He's out of range." She said turning back to Red. "Move." Red said, shoving Artemis out of the way. He notched an arrow and fired, the arrow flew and stuck a tracker on the boat.

He then made a mad dash for his jet ski. "Your abandoning-" Artemis started to say but got cut off. "I'm prioritizing." Red said back as he jumped on his jet ski and sped off after Sportsmaster.

"Oh, that's gotta sting." Cheshire said as she walked back up to Artemis and Kid Flash. "He made the shot your were too afraid to even try." She said kicking up her mask and putting it back on.

Artemis notched a different arrow and fired it at Cheshire. Kid Flash was running around while Cheshire was throwing Shuriken, trying to hit him. "Leave him alone." Artemis said as she came up behind him, swinging the sword that she had left in the ground. Cheshire dodged every swing and took her sword back before kicking Artemis away. Kid Flash sped to her side and helped her up.

"Forget me, what about-" she stopped as they look and see no sign of Cheshire.

"Did you-" Kid asked as if the answer was obvious. "Tracers on her sword." Artemis answered. Kid then grabbed her shoulders. "Awesome, I knew you cou-" kid cuts himself off as they hear a jet ski pull up to the shore. "Hey, it's the guys." Kid Flash said existed and ran to meet up with them.

Artemis looked disappointed. She looked at the train tracks as another train went by. She quickly launched a tracer arrow at one of the cars and it landed. Artemis walked up to the guys just as Kid Flash finished explaining how the plan worked and they can now track Cheshire.

"Cheshire's heading north." Artemis said holding up the receiver that showed that she wasn't lying. "Sportsmaster was heading south just like this mission." Red said with crossed arms.

"Maybe one of them will double back." Artemis suggested. "Either way they'll rondevu, and we'll find them." Kid said trying to be optimistic.

"We'd better, Sportsmaster acquired a case, we need to learn what it contained. If you had stayed aboard the bioship-" Aqualad said, but got cut off by Artemis. "I saw Cheshire sneaking up on him." Artemis pointed at Red Arrow. "Then you should have radioed a warning." "And if she found you by hacking our frequency?"

They we're all silent for a moment. "It is true, we've come to rely on M'gann's telepathy for our radio's." "Then let's stop playing the blame game and start looking for Cheshire."

"Here since I clearly can't be trusted you track her." Artemis tossed the receiver Red Arrow. Kid snatched the receiver out of Reds hand.

"Artemis." He said in a concerned tone trying to give her back the receiver. "It's fine I'll just follow along in the bioship." Artemis said, walking off. Aqualad looked to Kid.

"Go kid, Red Arrow and I will return to the river and we will All follow as we originally planned." He said with emphasis, all while looking at Red Arrow. After that they all walked away in different directions.

Back at Mont. Justice, the rest of the team were looking at the entrance to Red tornado's room everyone (Minus the wolves) Looked to Zatanna who smirked.

"Etatival!" She said flying up to the hatch with M'gann doing the same. "Hctah Siri nepo!" she said, making the Hatch door open. Zatanna and M'gann flew in to Red Tornado's room, Joshua followed them by jumping up threw the hatch. "Bark if Tornado comes back." Conner said to Fang and Wolf before jumping after the others.

In Tornado's room the group found lots of research equipment along with several holiday decorations. The weirdest thing that they saw was an operating table that looked like it had a body on it that was covered by a red sheet.

"Is that what I think it is?" Zatanna asked walking up to the side of the table. "I really hope not." Joshua said as he walked up to the other side of the table.

New Orleans, December 5th

22:18 CST

Sportsmaster sat the case on a desk in front of Dr. Ivo. He opened it revealing two canisters and a small monkey robot. "Thank you, Sportsmaster. We'll take it from here." Evo said as he got up from his seat. Sportsmaster just nodded and walked off as they villains continued their plan.

Artemis jumped through a window into a room filled with parade floats. The tracer that she put on Cheshire's sword was thrown at her feet.

"pulled it off my sword about a minute after you put it there." Cheshire said as she came out of the shadows. "Thought you'd want it back since it goes so well with the one Red Arrow gave you." Artemis looked back at her quiver to see a tracer on it. "Someone on your team doesn't trust you."

Cheshire sang as she pulled out a tablet showing security footage of Red Arrow outside the building. Artemis's eyes widened when she saw Sportsmaster on the roof about to attack Red Arrow while he tried to hack the door.

Back at mount Justice, the group looked in shock at what was on the table. It was a bald, Caucasian male humanoid robot with several panels on the chest, arms, and legged were open showing the circuitry inside. "So is Tornado building a friend or what." Zatanna asked right before the hatch opened and Tornado flew in. "Why don't you ask me yourself."

"Wolf." Connor Grumbled. "Fang." Joshua grumbled. Said pets were both sleeping on the floor.

"Alright what's with the new bot?" Connor asked gesturing to the robot on the table while Tornado floated down.

"I am a robot, this is an Android. He will serve as my alter ego John Smith. Once I download my consciousness into him he will allow me to walk among humans, interact, and learn." Tornado explained. "I think it's a wonderful Idea." M'gann said with a smile and a cheery tone. "Yeah, it's like you're evolving." Joshua added in.

"Your support is appreciated, but your presence is uninvited, is this a sign of disrespect?" Tornado asked. "Uhh, curiosity." "Boredom." M'gann and Connor answered drawing silence from the robotic hero.

"You know, he's kinda cute." Zatanna said with a small smile. "But if the goals human interaction, then-." She raised both arms and snapped her fingers. "Evig mih snap." She chanted and the sheet the was covering the Android turned into pants and put themselves onto it. "He really needed pants."

Mount Justice December 6th 3:21 EST

The team met back up in the training room. "Let me be clear, we failed. Though the Injustice league is in custody their allies still scheme and we have learned nothing of their planes." Aqualad explained to the others who didn't go on the mission. "Wow, I wonder why?" Red Arrow said with sarcasm, looking directly at Artemis.

"Hey, who figured out that Sportsmaster was working for Brain, Klarion, and Ivo!" Artemis shouted trying to defend herself. "Great intel, except Ivo's been locked up in Bel Rev the whole time, and the guards just checked it's the real Ivo not a robot." Red retorted.

"You know I'm getting pretty tired of you dumping on her." Kid said, getting in Red's face. Red held up the tracer that Artemis put on Cheshire.

"Her tracer, so, Cheshire ditched it." "No, Artemis used that to send us on a wild goose chase, she put this one on Cheshire." Red said, tossing the first one to Aqualad and pulling out a second one. Kid looked shocked.

"Artemis?" He said as he turned around. His look of shock turned to a look of anger. "Are you that freaked out by Red joining the team that you had to prove yourself by bringing down the bad guys solo? Please tell me I'm wrong." Kid asked, glaring at Artemis.

Artemis was about to answer but the words died in her mouth as she just exhaled and looked down at the ground. "Well, nice going, you've proved that your insecure and selfish." Kid said, throwing the Sai he kept as a souvenir at Artemis's feet. "Keep the Sai, this is the right souvenir for the mission." He said, grabbing the tracer and walking off.

"So how will you betray us next time?" Red said to Artemis who looked like she was about to cry. An impact is heard and and everyone turns to see Conner who caught and was holding back a punch from Joshua that was aimed for Red's face. "That's enough." Aqualad said to Red, getting in front of him to stop him from advancing forward, and also keeping him away from the seething Joshua who was being held back by Conner.

"If making a mistake was a betrayal, we would all be traitors. Now, I must report to Batman, the rest of you get some sleep." At Aqualad's words everyone walked off in different directions. Conner, wolf and Fang had to practically drag Joshua away.

Before he left Red Arrow walked up next to Artemis and whispered in a threatening tone. "You're not who you say you are. This isn't over, not by a long shot." Artemis's eyes widened, she glanced at her new teammate as he walked off. She felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked back to see Joshua giving her a look of understanding, she teared up and hugged him to hide the one that fell.

"Don't let him get to you, like Kaldur said we all make mistakes, even him. I'm here if you ever want to talk." Artemis looked up at her friend with a sad smile. "Thanks Joshua." Joshua gave her a smile and walked away. As she walked to the Zeta tube Artemis remembered Cheshire's words and frowned.
