Chapter 18: Last fight of the year
Washington D.C.; December 31 00:16 EST
Red Arrow was running through a subway, he was panting as he readied his bow. He hid behind a corner and notched an arrow.
He peaked out from his hiding spot only to get a cut on his face thanks to an arrow fired at him. He flipped out of his hiding spot and took aim but then had to dodge an explosive arrow. Flash came out of the dust cloud and punch Red arrow in the face, the hit made Red release his arrow into the ceiling causing another explosion and making another dust cloud.
As Red was getting up, Aquaman came up behind him. Red tried to hit him with His bow, but it broke when it made contact. Aquaman then hit Red with an uppercut, sending him flying.
Red was struggling to get back up when he saw a train coming down the tracks. The train passed and the three heroes stepped back onto the tracks. They looked around for Red Arrow only to see that he escaped through a sewer grate.
Mount Justice; December 31st 7:16 EST
"We have reason to feel proud of yesterday's victories, but one thing has not change." Aqualad said as he and the rest of the team walked down the hallway. "Somehow, the bad guys are still getting Intel on us." Robin added in, knowing what his friend was going to say. "Yeah but at least, we know that none of us are the mole." Kid Flash said in his usual tone.
"That's correct." Batman said as the team walked up to him and Red Tornado.
"The mole was Red Arrow." Batman brought up a holographic photo of Red Arrow while the teams eyes widened. Robin and Kid Flash voiced their disagreement. "Batman, that cannot be, he was Green Arrows Protégé, we have known him for years." Aqualad said in disbelief. "Unfortunately, the Roy Harper we've all known for the last three years was just another Cadmus clone." Red Tornado explained.
"We've learned that the real Speedy was abducted and replaced immediately after becoming Green Arrows sidekick. The clone was pre-programmed with a drive to join the Justice League." Batman added in.
"That's why he got so angry every time he was denied member ship." Robin said as rubbed his chin. "And why he refused to join the team." Kid added.
"This Roy Harper had no idea he was a clone, or a mole, and his programming drove him to become league worthy, so he struck out on his own. When he finally joined the league, his secondary programming kicked in and he tried to betray the League to Vandal Savage. Lucky, I had already figured out the truth." Batman explained.
"We were prepared, and Savage was subdued but Red Arrow escaped. He is now a fugitive, armed and dangerous." Red Tornado added in.
"If you guys didn't save us from Cadmus-" Legend muttered while Superboy rubbed the back of his neck.
"What about the real Roy?" Robin asked. "He wasn't at Cadmus, so we don't know. At this point we have to assume that the real Roy Harper is dead." The team looked sad at Batman's words. "The team will find the clone Roy." Aqualad said, raising his head. "Negative. Red Arrow is a member of the League, leave him to us." Batman said with authority. He put his fingers to his ear for a second. "I'm needed on the Watchtower; Tornado stay with the kids." Batman said as he walked over to the Zeta tube.
Aqualad turned to his team. "Weather he's the original or a clone, Red Arrow was one of us, we will go after him." Aqualad said over the mental link. Legend suddenly ran past Aqualad and grabbed Red Tornado's wrist and neck. Everyone looked at Legend in shock. "Legend, what are you doing, stop!" Robin said, grabbing one of his friends arm.
Tornado started to twitch and then stopped moving. Legend released his grip and Robin let go of his arm.
"What the heck JJ." Rocket asked as she and the others walked up to him. "Guys, I'm sensing some low-level magic from Tornado. Actually, I was getting the same felling from Batman too." Zatanna explained. Robin then had a moment of realization as he scanned Tornado. "He called is kids." He said with wide eyes.
"he's never done that before." Kid Flash said in agreement. , "Hey look." Kid said as he grabbed the chip out of Tornados hand. "It's one of the chips we got from Cheshire." "He was trying to stick it onto Aqualad, that's why I grabbed him." Legend explained.
"Something's not right." Miss M said. "Robin, Kid, Zatanna, Rocket, see if you can get Tornado back online. The rest with me to find Red Arrow." Robin looked back to the screen on his HoloGlove as Aqualad and his group ran off.
Aqualad's group flew in the bio ship over the city in camouflage mode.
"How are we supposed to find Red Arrow he could be any where right now." Artemis asked. "After Roy went solo, he made safe houses in several major cities. This is one of them."
The bioship stopped over the top of a building, inside Aqualad kicked the door to a room down and saw Red Arrow who had an arrow ready to fire at the Atlantean's chest.
"I have not come to harm or capture you, but the team requires answers." Aqualad said in a non-threatening tone. "Me first, tell me who broke your heart." Red Arrow said without lowering his guard. Aqualad sighed. "Tula, the girl I loved chose my best friend, Garth, over me." Red Arrow lowered his bow and relaxed a little.
The group, now joined by Red, flew off in the bioship. After Red explained what he found out about him being the mole, they met back up with Robin's group to plan their next move.
The Watchtower December 31st , 23:16 EST
Black Canary, Red Tornado, and Red Arrow all walked out of the Zeta tube and up to Vandal Savage. "Any problems?" Savage asked. "Despite an initial setback I was able to re-chip Red Tornado and Red Arrow." Canary answered, putting her hands on her hips. "As well as the entire team, they await reprograming back on earth." Tornado added.
"I think not. You see, 'Starotech' doesn't reprogram the mind, it gives us remote control of it." Savage said as he turned to Klarion, who was floating in the middle of the room with several HoloScreen's in front of him.
"We know exactly who's infected and who's not and none of you are." Green Lantern suddenly appeared and bonded all three of them, making sure to cover Canary's mouth.
"Fifty thousand years of life, and nothings troubled me more than the founding of the justice league." Savage put another chip on Canary's neck as he monologued.
"The league would protect humanity from disasters, crime, and tragedies of any kind. Have you never heard of survival of the fittest? You heroes ought to protect humanity from evolving. In doing so you forced my colleagues and I to respond in this way. All it took was a little science and a little misdirection and now you champions of stagnation have become our agents of change."
While this was going on, the team snuck into the Watchtower through the bottom. Once everyone was in, they huddled around Robin who had his holoscreen up.
"Tornado did it, he wirelessly bypassed security for us as soon as he arrived. No one should know were here." He said over the mental link. "Alright, move out." Aqualad ordered.
The team split up, taking Down any members of the league they found, knocking them out and placing the recovery chips they made on them to counteract the mind control.
"The brats are here. They've already taken down four of my toys." Klarion said in frustration as four icons popped off his screen.
"Recall all the heroes that are on away missions. It's time to put these children in their place once and for all." Savage said, getting a cheer out of Klarion. Klarion's cat then meowed drawing its owner's attention. "Oh right. Hey Vandal, shouldn't those three be online by now?"
Vandal's eyes widened, when he turned to the three heroes Canary let out a canary cry, sending Green Lantern flying into a column. Tornado sent a cyclone at Savage to keep him at bay while Red Arrow ran up to Lantern and put the recovery chip on him, making him pass out. Canary sent another cry at Klarion, but he summoned headphones to block it out. A portal then opened and out came Superman, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, Hawk Girl, another Green Lantern, and Batman.
Canary let out another cry, but Manhunter just phased through it, Hawk Girl hit Canary with her mace and sent her flying back. Red Arrow launched a flame tipped arrow at Manhunter who was affected by the fire even though the arrow phased through him. Red Arrow fired another arrow at Batman who deflected it with his gauntlet, Batman ran at Red Arrow and took him down. Green Lantern created a robot claw that held Red Tornado as Superman and Wonder Woman ripped off his arms and legs.
Savage looked down at the three fallen heroes. "The children have managed to reverse engineer the Starotech and make a cure, so there's no point in taking them alive." He said in his usual tone. "Goodie." Klarion said with a chuckle.
Captain Marvel, Icon, and Dr. Fate walked out of the Zeta tube; Miss M dropped three of the vaccine chips down to them. The first one landed on Dr. fate, but as soon as he passed out Icon turned around and fired a plasma blast that destroyed the two other chips and pushed Miss M into the wall. Legend came up behind Icon and put him in a full nelson, Icon managed to grab Legend and throw him away. Legend landed in a crouch and jumped back towards Icon and tried to push him back into the wall, but Icon locked hands with him and the two struggled. Rocket then came up behind Icon and put the chip on him.
Captain Marvel then flew at Zatanna who did a chant that made him transform back into Billy Batson.
Artemis fired two arrows, but Flash caught them, and he pushed Kid to the ground. Artemis fired an explosive arrow at Flash's feet, sending him flying. Green Arrow fired an explosive arrow at Artemis, forcing her out in the open.
"How are we still alive?" Artemis asked as her and Kid hide around the corner.
"It's because they're being controlled. They're limited by whoever's pulling their strings, the thing that's making us fight them is the only thing keeping us alive." Kid explained. "Artemis, Kid!" Aqualad shouted, drawing the two's attention. He shut the door and locked it. "Now." He ordered. Artemis shot an arrow at the door making the alarm go off.
The large door behind them opened causing everything that wasn't tied down to get sucked out into space. Once Flash, Aquaman, and Green Arrow were about to get sucked out of the building Aqualad shut the door, making the three heroes slam into the door and fall unconscious. Before they could get up, kid sped over to the them and placed the chips on them.
On the main floor, Hawk Girl was trying and failing to hit Robin with her mace. Wolf then jumped on her back and held her down so Robin could put the chip on her. Wonder Woman tried to catch Robin in her lasso, Rocket made a force field to block it. Wonder Woman pulled her lasso back and Rocket made a force field smaller around her.
"Can she make it out of your Force field?" Robin asked while he put a chip on Green Lantern. "Not if she keeps punching it, the kinetic energy only makes it stronger, but I have to focus on holding it or else she'll get out." Rocket explained, not noticing Batman who was about to punch her.
"Look out." Robin shouted as he jumped in to keep his mentor away from his teammate. Batman grabbed him by the leg and threw him out of the way, he tried to punch Rocket again, but she flew away; doing her best to maintain the force field around Wonder Woman.
Batman then turned to his protégé and cracked his knuckles. Robin throws some smoke bombs at his mentor, and they form a dust cloud around him. He jumped in the dust cloud with a kick but hits nothing but air, Batman then comes out of the dust cloud and punches Robin in the face.
On the upper floor, Superboy was fighting Superman while Legend took on Martian Manhunter. Superman sent Superboy flying into a wall with a face punch, Manhunter avoided all of Legend's attacks by phasing through them, he then punched him making him land next to Superboy. The two heroes looked down at the clones, but suddenly sphere launched herself at Manhunter while both Wolf and Fang pounced on Superman.
Superman grabbed them both by their necks and threw them away, Sphere then crushed Superman into the ground. The two clones got up and saw Superman slowly lifted Sphere up, he then through her up and imbedded her in the ceiling. The two clones then went for a double face punch, but Superman dodged.
Miss M, in camouflage, came up behind her uncle. When she got close, Manhunter grabbed her and shifted his body to face her. Miss M then shifted into her white Martian form. "Sorry Uncle J'onn, you leave me no choice." She said as she put Manhunter in an illusion where he was surrounded by fire, making him pass out.
Superman then punched Miss M, sending her into a wall before she landed on the ground. Superboy saw this and growled. Both he and Legend then jumped at Superman only for him to hit them again, this one sent them through to the top floor and right where Robin was fighting Batman.
Robin was dodging his mentors attacks until Batman sent him flying with a roundhouse. Robin landed in a crouch, he pulled out a pair of Escrima sticks and went back to attack Batman. Even with his weapons, Robin wasn't fairing much better than before, Batman grabbed Robin by the leg and threw him. Robin looked up to see no sign of his mentor, when he turned around all he saw was Batman's fist. Robin landed in a crouch in between Superboy and Legend.
"We're not gonna beat them one on one." Robin shouted to his teammates. "Plan B then." Superboy shouted in reply. "Incoming!" Legend yelled, drawing the other two's attention to Batman and Superman, who were jumping down towards them. Superboy and Legend each grabbed one of Robin's shoulder's and threw him at Batman. Robin grabbed onto Batman and used him to cushion impact with the wall, as they were falling Robin was able to stick him with one of the chips, making him pass out before he hit the floor.
Superman, who watched the entire thing was grabbed from behind by Legend and Superboy, each one restraining one of his arms. They held him up against the wall while Robin ran over to them. "You sure about this SB?" Robin asked, worried. "Just do it." Superboy said in a strained tone. Robin wasted no time and pulled out a small box, in it was a shard of Kryptonite that instantly made Superman stop struggling and made both him and Superboy groan in pain. Legend then put the chip on the back of superman's neck, unaffected as he is not a Kryptonian. "Kryptonite hurts." Superboy groaned as he got up with Legends help. "That's why Batman keeps it in an impenetrable vault in the Batcave." Robin said with a smirk. "Can't be that impenetrable if you were able to break in in like what, six minutes." Legend said with a chuckle, making the other two smile.
"Time to go." Savage, who had watched the entire battle said as the HoloScreen That was showing the heroes shut off. "Oh come on, we can take 'em." Klarion wined. "Yes, but there's a chance that you could lose control and destroy this station. Plus, the light still needs the Justice League alive." Savage explained.
"Hey, I wouldn't lose control." Klarion grumbled. His cat meowed and Klarion chuckled. "Okay you're right, I bring the chaos." He said as a portal swallowed both him and Savage just as kid Flash ran up to them, Aqualad and Artemis right behind him.
Aqualad knelt by the now limbless Red Tornado who lifted his head to look him in the eye. "Congratulations team, you have acquired victory this day." Tornado said in his same robotic tone. The rest of the team ran up to them just as a HoloScreen popped up and read "January 1st, 00:00 EST".
"Happy New Year Justice league." The computer announced. Kid then picked up Artemis bridal style and they kissed, Miss Martian and Superboy did the same, minus the bridal carry. Zatanna grabbed Robin and kissed him, shocking him before he returned it. Rocket walked up to Aqualad. "Liking this team more and more every day." She said then kissed him on the cheek.
"Human customs still elude me." Tornado said from his spot on the ground. "You and me both buddy." Legend said, crouching next to him.
Later, Superman flew down to Superboy who looked him dead in the eye. "The team did good today, you did good today." Superman said, his tone uncertain. "Um… thanks." Superboy said, his tone uncertain aswell. "So, I heard you took a name." Superman said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Oh, yeah, Conner Kent." Superman's eyes widened at this. "My secret identity is Clark Kent." It was Superboy's turn to look surprised. I didn't know, I wasn't trying to-" He said frantically until Superman cut him off. "No, no. The thing is… I'm glad. Conner Kent, it seems right." He said with a genuine smile. Superboy looked shocked for a moment, then returned the smile.
On the balcony above Icon and Legend watched the exchange. "Seems like they're finally getting along." Icon said, not taking his eyes off the two. "It's about time, I'm tired of having to deal with him when big blue makes him mad." Legend said, remembering every time Superboy wanted to spar to blow off some steam. Icon put his hand on Legends shoulder, getting him to look up at him. "I'm proud of you… son." Icon was almost knocked to the ground when Legend nearly tackled him in a hug that he soon returned.
"Everything I thought I knew was a lie." Red Arrow said in a defeated tone. Around him was Batman, Black Canary, Robin, and Green Arrow. "I was never a hero, or a sidekick, I'm a traitor."
Black Canary placed her hand on Red's shoulder. "Roy-" She is cut off by Red. "Don't call me that, I'm not Roy, I don't know what I am. All I know is that I have to finds the real Roy, I'm going to rescue Speedy." Red said with a determined look. Green Arrow looked down at Red's declaration. "We have Guardian searching Cadmus as we speak." Batman announced.
In Cadmus, Guardian stood frozen while Dr. Spencer, Double X and other Genomorph's were sprawled on the ground. Leave nothing behind we might need, the league will be here soon." Ra's al Ghul said to Lex, Queen Bee, Ocean Master, and the Brain while Malo wheels out the two pods holding Match and holding Epic. "Match and Epic of course, but this one might prove useful as well." Ra's says as he walks up to a pod hold the real Roy Harper.

Legend, wearing his street cloths, stood Infront of an apartment door. He took a deep breath and was about to knock when the door opened all of the sudden. There stood a smirking Cheshire, wearing a green tank top and gray shorts.
"Um… hey, Jade." Legend said getting no response from Jade who just stood there with a knowing look. Legend chuckled nervously and cleared his throat. "Artemis told me that you wanted to see me and I just wanted to come and say happy new year.
"So if you wanna go grab a bite we ca-" He was cut off when Jade grabbed him by the collar, pulled him down so they were face to face, and gave him a steamy and passionate kiss. She let go when she needed air and Legend stood there with a dazed look in his eye.
"How about instead you come on in so we can celebrate." Jade said, gesturing for him to follow her. He walked in and Jade shut the door behind him and locked it.
