Author's Note (3/17/2025):

Hey, sorry for the update. I'm going ahead and reuploading the most recent chapters for my ongoing stories. I've received multiple PM's saying that people can't see my last updates. Even for stories I updated over a month ago. I'm hoping this might reset it. Super frustrating. I've ported all the stories over to Ao3, where they are available to read as well. Thankfully more reliable over there. Shame that this site is dying.

But thank you for reading, as always. New chapters coming soon :)

Chapter III: Investigating Perseus Jackson

Dwight K. Schrute arrived at the office exactly fifteen minutes early, as was his custom. Early arrival was a sign of dominance. The weak arrived late, and the weak were destined to be devoured by the strong. Realistically, they should be written up for tardiness. Dwight kept a running tally to use as contract leverage the day he finally became regional manager. Of course, Phyllis was the worst.

But today, Dwight was in a generous mood, ignoring her tardiness as she trundled in. Today, Dwight had a different mission.

As he adjusted the knot of his mustard-yellow tie to symmetric perfection, his gaze fell upon the new guy. Percy Jackson was already seated at his desk. The sleeves of his shirt were rolled up, revealing a set of toned forearms. And an interesting tattoo.

Percy was typing something on his computer. Fast. Too fast. His fingers were blurs across the keyboard.

Dwight's eyes narrowed.

"Morning, Dwight," Percy said without looking up.

"How did you know it was me?" Dwight demanded.

Percy glanced up, clearly amused. "I could… see you in front of me?"

Enhanced vision. Interesting. Dwight filed that away. It suggested an enlarged field of view. Perhaps even echolocation.

Percy went back to his typing. Dwight continued to hover.

"You're typing awfully fast," Dwight observed.

Percy shrugged. "Just getting the hang of the spreadsheet system."

Dwight leaned closer. "No one 'gets the hang' of our spreadsheet system. It was designed by the enemies of efficiency. The Scranton IT department."

Percy smiled. "Guess I'm a fast learner."

No. Dwight had a nose for deception. Percy Jackson was not just a 'fast learner.' The way he was able to quickly pick up corporate espionage during last weeks 'test of trust mission?' Unnatural.

Something was off about him.

Dwight perched behind a fake plant, binoculars pressed to his eyes as he observed Percy through the thin plastic leaves.

Percy was sitting at his desk, talking to… Pam.

Dwight's jaw tightened.

Pam.

Pam, with her radiant auburn hair. Pam, with her delicate freckled nose. Pam, with the easy smile that lit up a room more than any fluorescent light fixture ever could. Pam, with her misguided attachment to Jim.

And now Percy Jackson was laughing with her.

Pam tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, smiling shyly at something Percy said. Percy leaned in slightly, grinning back at her with the kind of boyish charm that made teenage girls swoon and middle-aged men deeply insecure.

Dwight gritted his teeth.

"I see what's happening," he muttered.

Percy Jackson wasn't just a threat to Dunder Mifflin. He was a threat to Jim!

Pam laughed, a light, musical sound, and placed a hand on Percy's wrist.

Dwight stood so abruptly the plastic leaves of the fern rustled.

No.

He couldn't allow this.

-Ω-

Dwight cornered Jim by the vending machine. This was his one chance. He didn't always like Jim. The man was barely half the salesman he was. But god damnit, he'd help him this one time.

"You're losing her," Dwight said.

Jim pressed B7 and retrieved a pack of M . "Morning to you too, Dwight."

"Pam," Dwight growled. "Percy is making his move. You have to act."

Jim's eyes tilted. "Percy? Really?"

Dwight nodded grimly. "You're losing your grip on her. I can sense it."

Jim opened his candy, shaking his head. "Dwight, I think you seem to forget that Karen and I are dating. And we're doing very well, thanks for asking. I know it can be confusing since we started dating while I was at Utica, and then I moved back to Scranton. Actually," Jim paused to rub his chin, "last night, she told me, to tell you that she misses you."

"Denial." Dwight sharpened his tone. "Long-distance relationships don't count. Percy Jackson is the perfect rival. Handsome. Athletic. He probably owns a boat."

Jim's smile widened. "A boat?"

Dwight leaned in. "A demigod's vessel. I suspect he's not who he says he is."

"Ah," Jim said. "Naturally."

Dwight crossed his arms. It was frustrating how small Jim thought. "And if Percy Jackson thinks he can waltz into this office and steal Pam from you, then it's only right that you engage him in combat."

Jim laughed. "What, like a duel?"

"Exactly," Dwight said.

Jim shrugged. "I'll pass."

"You coward."

Jim popped an M into his mouth. Dwight fought the urge to rip the bag from him. How could he stand there and eat when the woman, who should be the love of his life, was being taken away from him? Dwight considered himself an excellent judge of character. Karen was no Pam. Jim and Percy? Well, if Dwight was being honest, Jim might not have much of a chance. Which was why he needed to act, now!

"I think I'll let Percy have this one." Jim said, but Dwight could sense the tiniest of uncertainties this time. "He seems a lot better than Roy ever was."

Dwight's suspicions about Percy's origins only intensified when Percy caught a stack of falling files midair. No normal human had that sort of reaction speed. Dwight had personally calibrated the speed at which the files would fall when he set them teetering on the edge of the cabinet. It should've taken them 0.15 seconds to reach the floor. The average human reaction speed was 0.25 seconds.

Percy caught them in an instant.

And then there was the fish tank incident.

Percy Jackson had strolled by the fish tank, a new addition thanks to Michael, and whispered something. And suddenly the fish were calm. In fact, for the first time, they began swimming around in formation. Totally not something beta fish would do naturally.

Dwight knew what he had seen. Percy Jackson could commune with aquatic life.
