Chapter 18: Boy or Girl

Dean was now twenty weeks along and was ready to find out the gender of baby Winchester. Today was the big day he would find out. He wanted nothing more than a healthy baby but felt like it was going to be a girl while Sam and Jessica thought it was a boy. They wanted the baby to be a healthy baby girl but with the way Dean was carrying it could be either or.

Happy that he was going to find out today he cooked everyone in the house breakfast after he got up and took a shower. John and Bobby are the first to come downstairs and a while later Sam and Jessica come down too looking like they showered together since their faces were flushed red and hair still wet on both.

Jessica came up behind Dean and laid her hands on his stomach from behind and he jumped. He knew she loved the baby already since she would find any reason just to feel the movements of the baby. Not to mention she began reading her favorite childhood books to his belly and making sure that Bobby's house was baby safe insisting they were going to stay there until they could afford a house all their own.

She did it again and he jumped and squirmed uncomfortably. "Why are you so skittish around me?"

He wanted to lie but he found he could not. "Is Sam okay with you touching me like this?"

She let go of him and turned to where Sam was leaning against the doorway watching them. "Are you okay with me always touching his belly?"

"Do you see him as only as a brother?"

"Yes, I do."

Sam looks at Jessica then Dean and makes a gesture as if to say see. "Then you have your answer. I am fine with it."

Jessica walks over and kisses Sam and when she pulls back, he puts his hands on either side of her face and kisses her again this time slower and lovingly.

"Okay! I get it. She is yours!" Dean jokes as he swats them with a towel, and they part with laughter.

Jessica goes back over to Dean when he turns back to the stove and begins to cradle the bump he had while looking over his shoulder to see what he was making. "So now that that is settled today is the day we find out the gender? Are you excited? What are you making?"

"A homemade salad for Sammy and eggs bacon and pancakes for the rest of you. I'm just the incubator so I can't get attached," he said then looked over his shoulder at Sam and gesturing toward the position he and Jessica were in. "Are you sure you're okay with this?"

Sam looks at them for a minute and nods. As Dean is in the middle of cooking the baby suddenly moves and he moves Jessica's hand to where he felt it and keeps his hand over hers while Sam, John and Bobby watch them as they all sit down waiting to be served.

"Don't say that and it's okay if you become attached. How does that feel from the inside?" Jessica whispers as he flips the last pancake over in the pot.

"Well, it's true. I don't know about you, but I don't really think Sammy is really going to want me around after she's born. Like nothing I have ever felt before...magical."

At that response Jessica hides her face in his back and begins to weep and shake uncontrollably. Dean quickly finishes cooking the pancake putting it on the plate with the others.

He turns around in Jessica's arms and hugs her as tight as he can once he was done and kissed the top of her head. "Hey, oh no, don't cry. What's wrong?"

She covers her face with both hands as she cries, and he continues to hug her. "I'll never be able to experience that!"

"Hey, look at me," he stated and when she did, he held her chin so she would look at him. "This is your kid, and you are experiencing it through me! Never say never. You hear me?"

Jessica nods while he still has her chin in his hand. "Yes. Okay."

He lets her go and she sits down next to Sam lost in her own thoughts as they finally all get served and began to eat.

Jessica cuts into her pancakes as she talks and looks over to Dean. "Just so you know Sam and I talked, and we both want you to be a part of the baby's life."

"So, neither of you want me to leave once she's here?"

"It's a boy and no we don't want you to leave once he's here," Sam answered his brother as Jessica took his hand. "The plan is that he'll know you as his uncle until he gets to an age, we can tell him the truth and he'll understand."

While Bobby already knew Dean wasn't keeping the baby, John found out a week ago. His reaction was interesting, and he almost seemed relieved. Dean did not take his reaction so well but, in the end, forgave him even though he shouldn't have.

"Okay, then I'll stay I guess," Dean responded looking incredibly happy before looking down at his bump. "You hear that ladybug? I get to stay!"

Sensing what was about to happen next Bobby and John excused themselves from the table with an excuse that they will be gone for a few days because of a hunt they found but to be sure they got a video of the ultrasound and pictures.

Sam and Jessica told them they would, and Dean immediately burst into tears as they hugged him all at once until he stopped.

After they were all finished eating, they went to the appointment and not too long after they arrived, they were called into the doctor's office. Missouri could immediately see the aura had changed for the better around her patient and she was happy to see it.

He immediately went to lay on the bed with a pep in his step. He was not sad either which was a significant improvement. Jessica and Sam pulled chairs over to be close to him.

"Okay Dean, you know the drill," she said while taking a seat next to him and pulling the ultrasound machine over. "Lift up your shirt and we can begin."

He does as he is told enough that the bump is visible, and she applies the gel. A heartbeat fills the room as soon as she locates it with the medical wand.

Tears fill Deans eyes as he stared at the screen, but he refused to let them fall. He could not help but wonder was that baby really his when it shouldn't even be possible for him to carry. He wondered if he could truly stick around and be known as the uncle instead of the father. Would he do as good of a job in helping to raise this kid as he did with his own brother? Can he allow himself to get attached when in the end it could all be ripped away? He had so many questions in his head but so little answers. He guessed only time would tell.

"You are allowed to cry Dean. It's okay to become attached," Jessica said as she held his hand while filming a video on her cell. "It's okay."

"I don't mean to, but I am," he responded as he looked at both his brother and Jessica. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay bro. We talked about this. If the situation were reversed, I would get attached too."

Missouri began to ask what the plan was now but then thought better not to ask since she was only his doctor and instead asked another question. "The baby is now in a position that makes it easier for the gender to be determined. Would you all like to know if it's a boy or girl?"

They all looked at each other in agreement and all together said yes eagerly as they turned back to Missouri. She began to move the wand around his stomach and sure enough baby Winchester was going to be a girl as Sam and Jessica stood up to get a closer look.

Missouri pointed to a place on the baby. "Congratulations! It looks like you're having a perfectly healthy baby girl."

"Told you it was a girl Sammy," Dean said, smiling through tears of happiness as he punched Sam lightly on his arm as Jessica ran her fingers through his hair now.

Sam turned to Jessica as he twirled her around after kissing her. "Did you hear that? We're having a girl!"

Jessica just held on to him tightly and kissed him back once he let her down. "I knew you would be excited no matter what it was. We're having a girl!"

She turned to Dean and gave him a tight hug he returned and a kiss on each cheek as she whispered a thank you in his ear and he nodded. Sam hugged his brother too and thanked him tremendously.

Dean wiped away the tears on his face and cleared his throat. "So, what are we naming her? Have you discussed the name I chose for her with her Sammy?"

"Yes, he did, and we like it," Jessica answered, with happy tears falling down her face as her arms go around Sam as she snuggled into him and kissed his cheek all while still looking at Dean. "Samantha Grace Winchester."

"Samantha Grace Winchester," Dean said trying it on his tongue. "I like that."

Sam wiped away her tears as he kissed her between words. "Is this really happening? Are we really having a baby?"

Jessica squeezed him tight as she looked up at him and kissed him again. "Yes, we really are having a baby! One to call our very own."

When they got home, they put the ultrasound picture in a photo album that they kept everything in from the moment they found out they could have Dean's baby. Jessica showed Sam the video she recorded of Dean in secret with a promise he wouldn't tell him yet. It was a video of his reaction to finding out who they were looking forward to meeting and raising someday soon.
