Episode Seventy-Nine: The Weight of the World
It has now been 26 hours since Sonic's sacrifice. Mizuno Ami has still not moved from her spot, but now she lies on the ground beside Sonic's lifeless body, holding him close as if she could somehow protect him even in death. Her face is hollow, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She doesn't speak anymore, her voice long gone from hours of weeping. All she can do is hold him, her fingers gently stroking his arms as she clings to the last remnants of the life they shared.
Beside her, Sally sits in silence, resolute in her decision to stay with Ami for as long as it takes. She has said nothing for hours, but her presence is a quiet source of strength. Sally, too, is deeply affected, the regret and grief for how things were left with Sonic weighing heavily on her heart. The pain she feels is a mix of her physical condition and the emotional toll of losing him.
One by one, the others have come to show their support over the last 12 hours. Even Silver, who had been locked away in his room in silent grief, now stands nearby, watching over them with a haunted expression. The air is thick with sorrow, and the atmosphere is one of shared loss.
Usagi and Tails are still immobile, trapped in their own grief. Tails hasn't spoken a word since the battle, and Usagi, her guilt and sorrow overwhelming, has not taken her eyes off the Silver Crystal, as if waiting for it to give her an answer it will never provide.
While the air is heavy with loss, there is one subtle change that has not gone unnoticed by the others. A new closeness has formed between Knuckles and Minako, a bond that wasn't there before the battle. Since Knuckles' emotional breakdown in front of her, something has shifted between them. They are often seen side by side, offering each other silent comfort. The bond they share is born from shared pain, and while neither speaks of it, it is clear to everyone that something deeper has grown between them.
Rei, watching from a distance, raises an eyebrow as she notices how Minako gently touches Knuckles' arm, how he responds with a nod, the two of them communicating without words. Rei exchanges a glance with Makoto, both silently acknowledging the new connection between their friend and the Guardian of Angel Island.
As the group continues to mourn, a new presence is felt. A quiet tension fills the air as Sonic's family arrives, drawn to the other side of the world by an intrinsic feeling that something terrible has happened. They have felt it in their hearts, and it has led them here. Sonic's mother, Bernadette "Bernie" Maurice, is the first to step forward. Her heart shatters at the sight before her — her beloved son, the hero of Mobius, lying lifeless in Ami's arms. The weight of the scene hits her like a tidal wave, and she lets out a soft, broken gasp, her knees buckling as she drops to the ground beside Sonic's body.
*Bernie: (whispering, voice trembling) "Olgilvie… my baby… no…"
Her hands reach out to touch her son's face, but they shake uncontrollably. Tears spill from her eyes as she clutches his hand, her voice barely more than a sob.
*Bernie: (sobbing) "Why… why did it have to be him…?"
Behind her, Sir Charles "Uncle Chuck" Maurice, Sonic's uncle and mentor, stands frozen, his body trembling as tears stream down his face. He had raised Sonic, had watched him grow into the hero the world knew him to be, and now… now he can't stop crying. His hands cover his face as he lets out a choked sob, the sorrow too much to bear.
*Uncle Chuck: (whispering through sobs) "I… I couldn't protect him… I promised I'd always be there for him…"
Finally, Sonic's father, Jules Maurice — a roboticized Hedgehog — steps forward. His expression, though stoic, reflects the deep pain he feels. Without a word, Jules lies down beside Ami and Sonic, wrapping his robotic arms around them both. He doesn't speak; he doesn't need to. The gesture alone is enough. His presence is strong, comforting, and silent. Jules can see in Ami's eyes just how much his son meant to her, and in that moment, he knows. Sonic loved her with all his heart, and she loved him just as deeply. He holds them both, his silent strength offering some small comfort.
As Bernie continues to cry over her son's body, she calls him by his birth name — Olgilvie. The sound of his true name, the name he had been given at birth, echoes in the stillness of the night.
*Bernie: (softly, through tears) "Olgilvie Maurice… you were my little boy… my precious son… how could this happen…?"
Her voice breaks as she recalls the day he was born, the day she named him after an important member of her family. She remembers how, as a small child, he had earned the nickname "Sonic" because of how fast he could move, even at such a young age. Over the years, that nickname became his identity, the name the world would come to know him by, Sonic the Hedgehog. But to her, he would always be Olgilvie Maurice — the little boy she had raised, the son she had loved with all her heart.
As Bernie speaks, Ami's grip on Sonic tightens. Hearing his true name, the name only those closest to him would know, breaks something deep within her. It adds a final sense of reality, of finality. Sonic — her Sonic — is truly gone. Ami begins to tremble, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps as the weight of it all crashes down on her. The presence of Sonic's father holding Sonic and her only intensifies the grief she feels.
*Ami: (whispering through sobs) "He's really gone… isn't he…? My Sonic… he's really gone…"
Jules says nothing, but his arms tighten around them both, offering the only comfort he can. Ami's body shakes uncontrollably as she finally breaks down completely, the last of her strength giving way to the overwhelming sorrow.
*Ami: (sobbing hysterically) "I can't… I can't do this without him… we are Mercurians… We're made for each other… please… bring him back… please…"
But no one can bring him back. The reality of the loss settles over them like a heavy, suffocating blanket. Sonic the Hedgehog, the hero of Mobius, is gone.
