Episode Eighty: Echoes of a Hero
It has now been 48 hours since Sonic's sacrifice, and the people of Tokyo, along with survivors of the battle, have gathered to honor him. The city is still in shock, but word of Sonic's death has begun to spread far and wide. More and more people are flocking to Tokyo, paying their respects to the hero who saved the world at the cost of his own life.
Among them is Ami, still holding Sonic's body. She hasn't let go of him since the moment he fell. She lies beside him, her hands still clutching his lifeless form, and she whispers softly to him, vowing to keep her promise. It doesn't matter that Sonic is gone — Ami is determined to protect him, just as he protected her.
*Ami: (softly, voice shaking) "I promised you, Sonic… I promised I'd protect you… I won't leave you… I'll never leave you…"
Her voice cracks, but her grip on him tightens. The grief has taken such a toll on her that it's visible in every line of her face. Her once-clear blue eyes are dulled with pain, and she hasn't slept in the last two days.
Sonic's family, understanding the depth of Ami's connection to their son, has taken her in as one of their own. They see her as more than just the girl who Sonic loved — they know she was his entire world. Bernie, Uncle Chuck, and Jules have accepted Ami into their family without hesitation, knowing that this is what Sonic would have wanted.
The Maurice family moves together as one unit, with Ami now firmly by their side. Princess Sally, too, has gone with the family, providing her strength and comfort to Ami in these difficult times. As a close family friend, she is welcomed without hesitation, and her presence is a quiet reminder of the bond she shared with Sonic, even though things were left unresolved. Sally and Ami walk side by side as the Maurice family escorts Sonic's body to a memorial prepared for him in the heart of Tokyo. Sally remains strong for Ami, though her own heart is heavy with grief. The two women are united in their shared love for Sonic, and neither of them wants to leave his side.
As the memorial gathers more people, Usagi has not moved from her spot since Sonic's death. She sits in silence, staring at the Silver Crystal in her hands, her mind filled with dark thoughts. The guilt and grief are beginning to consume her, just as they had when Mamoru died. She remembers all too well how close she came to giving up back then, and now, those same feelings are creeping back into her heart. She keeps to herself, avoiding her friends, her eyes hollow as she replays the events over and over in her mind. How could she have been so powerless? Why did Sonic have to die to save her? These questions haunt her, and the weight of her own survival feels like a curse.
*Usagi: (whispering to herself) "Why did it have to be him? Why couldn't it have been me?"
The other Sailor Senshi are deeply concerned for her, but they know they can't force her to open up. All they can do is watch over her, hoping that she won't spiral further into the darkness.
While the rest of the group grieves in their own way, Tails remains in a state of catatonia. He sits in silence, staring at the floor, his eyes unfocused as he tries to comprehend a world without Sonic. Rotor and Bunnie take turns watching over him, speaking to him softly, hoping to draw him out of his trance. But Tails doesn't respond. His world is shattered, and without Sonic, he feels like a lost child. The older Freedom Fighters exchange worried glances, unsure of how to help him. They know that time is the only thing that can heal his wounds, but they fear for the young Fox's mental state.
*Rotor: (softly, to Bunnie) "He'll come back to us… won't he?"
*Bunnie: (sighing, voice heavy) "I don't know, Rotor… I just don't know…"
They continue to watch over him, praying that Tails will find his way back, though their own hearts are burdened with grief.
Silver, too, feels the weight of Sonic's death pressing down on him. Without the Chaos Emeralds, he has no way to return to his time. But even if he could, Silver doesn't want to leave. He feels a sense of duty — an obligation to stay and fight alongside the Freedom Fighters, just as Sonic would have wanted.
He reflects on the bond he shared with Sonic, and the hero's unwavering belief in a better future. That belief had inspired Silver, and now, in the wake of Sonic's death, Silver feels that he must continue that fight. He resolves to stay, to honor Sonic's memory, and to fight for the future that they both believed in.
*Silver: (determined, voice low) "I'm staying. I'll fight with them. I'll keep fighting for the future Sonic believed in."
His decision is final. He will stand with the Freedom Fighters, no matter what comes next.
As the day goes on, each member of Sonic's family takes time to speak with Ami, sharing their memories of Sonic, hoping to bring her some comfort. But with each conversation, more cracks begin to appear in Ami's mental state. Bernie is the first to sit with Ami, her eyes filled with sorrow. She takes Ami's hand gently, her voice soft as she speaks.
*Bernie: (softly) "He loved you, Ami. I assume he gave his life to protect you. I can see it in your eyes. You made him so happy…"
Ami, her eyes still red from hours of crying, listens in silence, her heart breaking with every word.
*Ami: (whispering) "I loved him, too… so much…"
*Bernie: (tearing up) "He was always my Olgilvie… my little boy. I never stopped calling him that, even after he became the hero everyone knew. He was Sonic to the world, but to me… he was always Olgilvie."
Hearing Sonic's birth name causes Ami to choke back a sob. The name feels so personal, so intimate, and it reminds her that she will never hear him speak it again.
Next, Uncle Chuck comes to sit beside Ami. His face is etched with sorrow, and his voice trembles as he speaks.
*Uncle Chuck: (voice shaky) "He was more than just a nephew to me… he was like a son. I watched him grow into the hero the world knew, and I couldn't be prouder of him. But I always worried… that he was carrying too much on his shoulders."
Ami listens, her heart heavy with the weight of Uncle Chuck's words. She can feel the cracks in her own resolve growing wider with each passing moment.
*Uncle Chuck: (choking up) "I should have done more… I should have protected him…"
Ami's grip on Sonic's body tightens, her mind racing with guilt and sorrow. She feels as if she should have done more too. They all feel that way.
Finally, Jules, Sonic's roboticized father, approaches Ami. He doesn't speak at first, his robotic frame moving slowly as he kneels beside her and Sonic. His presence is calm, steady, as he looks at her with quiet understanding.
Without a word, Jules reaches out and gently places a hand on Ami's shoulder. The silent gesture speaks volumes — he understands her pain, her grief, her love for his son. He knows what Sonic meant to her. Ami, overwhelmed by the kindness and strength of Sonic's father, breaks down once more, her body trembling as fresh sobs escape her throat.
*Ami: (sobbing) "I don't know how to live without him… I can't…"
Jules says nothing, but his embrace around Ami tightens, offering her the only comfort he can. The silence between them is filled with unspoken sorrow, as Jules holds both Ami and Sonic, keeping them close. This final moment shatters something deep within Ami, the cracks in her mental state now wide open. She has no idea how to move forward. Sonic was her world, and without him, she is lost…
