Chapter Nine

It's been two years since Tsuna's first battle against the grim raptors. The scratches and bite marks from that night have left scars on the twenty-five year old.

She walked on all fours, pressing her knuckles on the soft soils beneath her while her some of her nieces and nephews followed right behind their strong aunty. She smiled as she looked behind her and saw her oldest nephew run circles around her while her youngest niece clinged to her back. Oh how she loved seeing the little ones have their fun.

After traveling for several days, the Üngana were close to reaching their nesting ground. Taruk and his son Maku led the way with the younger ape starting to take the role of leader of the tribe. While Taruk was still ape's wise and strong chief, the years were starting to weigh on him.

Maku looked at how his father had more white hair while his muscles and body posture was beginning to sag more and more with every day that went by. He watched his father start to struggle with even the most simple tasks like chewing and often times, grabbing things.

While the great ape may have looked old, he was still strong enough to protect his family. Not too long ago, the tribe fell under attack by raptors that made an attempt to snatch up the young and weak. Even though Taruk suffered from several bites and scratches he was still strong enough to defeat the feathered demons.

As the tribe wandered through the jungle, Tsuna felt the little ones tug her away. She smiled at how they wanted to play with their dear aunty. She looked at her oldest nephew, Aküt, and saw a spitting image of her brother.

Play with us! He happily grunted before other little ones chimed in.

Let's wrestle!

Please Tsuna!

Please!

Naru, the youngest, happily tugged on Tsuna's black hair.

Tsuna reluctantly gave into the small ones' demands as she strayed away from the line of apes. She galloped and bucked across the dirt and leaves while the infants followed. The adults watched and were not amused at how the young woman acted very childish.

Akut tackled Tsuna from the side as Naru crawled across her face. The three rolled on the soft soil with Tsuna holding her oldest nephew in a gentle headlock. The others followed their fearless leader's example as the remains boys leapt onto the adult woman.

Playfully swatting them away, Tsuna freed herself before she saw Aküt standing before her, beating his chest proudly. A smirk fell upon her face as the human accepted the little Ungana's challenge and playfully beaten her chest. Maku turned his head and saw the small commotion.

While the large ape had his responsibilities, he never stopped spending time with his family. He happily grunted as he watched his son challenge his sister.

The young ape charged and lunged himself toward Tsuna before the two rolled across the floor. Tsuna admired her nephew's courage, but she was not going to allow a small boy best her. The human playfully pinned her nephew with ease while Naru cheered and howled on the side.

The baby ape was struck with awe as she saw her aunty's strength. As part of their way of life, the females of the tribe are meant to nurture and raise their young ones, while the males protected them. However, her Aunty Tsuna was the exception.

While Naru loved being with her mother, there was something about Tsuna that made her more exciting than Mira.

From time to time, whenever her mother needed a break from her antics, Tsuna gladly took little Naru on her daily adventures. For Tsuna, they were just standard scouting missions, but for Naru they were something exciting. She loved feeling the wind blow through her brown fur as she clung onto the human whenever they swung through the trees.

But even though Naru wished she could be as strong as Tsuna, she had to listen to her mother and abide by traditions. In a few years, her wild nature would be subdued for a more maternal role. Still, it did feel nice whenever she had the chance to spend time with her strong and adventurous aunt.

While the Tsuna wrestled with the young ones, Maku felt a slight disturbance. Taruk sensed it too, as both large apes realized that the jungle was quiet - too quiet.

The father and son heightened their senses, attempting to hear the slightest of sounds. But not even the sounds of birds could be heard in their part of the jungle. It was as if every living being was holding their breath, as if they were being watched.

The entire tribe finally took notice of this anomaly and were suddenly silent. Tsuna saw how her brother and father were frozen and a look of concern fell upon her face.

Maku, along with his friends, cautiously strayed away from the group. Tsuna ceased her playful foolery as the mothers of the tribe, Mira included, grabbed their infants. Taruk went to his mate and guarded Üma while Tsuna went to her brother's aid.

The human walked beside her ape brother sniffing the air for any signs of dangerous odors. Neither Tsuna nor Maku could detect anything strange.

The upcoming leader of the tribe saw that there was no danger. He gave several grunts, informing the apes to continue on their journey. Just as one ape turned away from a wall of bamboo and dense leaves, a yellow eye emerged as large teeth snatched the ape from behind.

The gorilla's cries were more of a high pitch screeching call for help as it felt its shoulder crush in an instant. The apes looked in horror when they saw red blood spray across the green foliage. From out of the bamboo was an adult skull rex with half an Üngana in its hungry mouth.

The mother apes fled the scene with their children as they ran deep into the jungle. Their escape was cut short when two younger skull rexes intercepted their path. Tsuna watched in both fear and anger when she saw the trio of tyrannosaur circle around them. However one of them looked all too familiar.

The leader of the three predators stood at over twenty feet tall and was absolutely fifty feet long. Some of his teeth were chipped and broken as well as some of the large ribs outside of his ash grey skin. But it was its eyes that made the creature familiar.

Tsuna's heart raced when she noticed how its right eye was severely damaged with a scar. She soon realized that this was the same skull rex that she encountered in the cave five years ago.

A loud roar made the jungle tremble in fear when the alpha rex showed off his large teeth that were soaked in ape blood.

Maku, Taruk, along with every male of the tribe, began to pound their chests with clenched fists. The Ungana would not so easily be frightened as they howled their voices at the three reptiles. Tsuna joined in as well as she beated her chest and slammed her fists into the ground.

With their tribe surrounded by Primordial's apex predators, the males protected the females and infants. It wasn't long until one of the younger skull rexes charged in with its large teeth.

Two apes lunged at the charging reptile and latched themselves onto the rex. They bit and pulled the face of the creature, forcing the predator to steer away from the tribe while the other young rex attached. Tsuna's friends, charged at the rampaging beast and kept the dinosaur at bay while the mothers escaped with their children.

Tsuna watched her mother flee into the jungle while she ran up the nearest tree. She watched her father and brother face off against the alpha skull rex who slammed its tale onto the ground, causing a small baby earthquake. Taruk and Maku answered the reptiles call and challenged the beast.

The skull rex swipes its large tail and slams it at Maku who reluctantly catches the blow but slides across the ground with the tail in his grip. Taruk seized the opportunity and charged at the skull rex. Tsuna watched and cheered from the safety of her tree when she saw her father grab a large stone and slam it on the side of the predator's face.

Bits of broken teeth flew across the air as the rex screamed in pain. However, its pain only fueled its anger for lit a fire within the rex who was hungry for revenge. Using all its strength the skull rex raised its tail, along with Maku, and slammed it onto the ground.

Maku felt a large breath of air escape his longs while his back was in immense shock after feeling a fraction of the rex's full weight. Taruk rushed in to retaliate, only for the rex to dodge the stone attack before shipping his tail across the ape's chest. Tsuna watched in horror as both her brother and father were easily defeated by the alpha rex.

With both apes defeated, the skull rex wondered which would it devour first. It could go for Maku, eliminating the strongest ape, therefore making the remainder of the day much easier. It could also eat Taruk first, getting rid of the Ungana that blinded him twenty-five years ago.

The rex reached a decision and decided to go after Maku. The beast placed its large foot on Taruk, preventing the ape from escape, and also forcing him to watch the rex eat his own son. Maku struggled to get up as he watched the tyrannosaur lick its sharp teeth.

Before the dinosaur could do any harm, Tsuna leaped from her tree and landed on top of the rex's face. Holding on to dear life, her body was thrashed around as the dinosaur did its best to shake off the human. Still, it allowed Tsuna to take the skull rex's attention off of her family and focus on her alone.

Taruk felt the weight of the creature lift off his chest and gasped for air, while Maku ran over to his father's aid. The two apes helped each other up and watched Tsuna ride on death's face.

Run! Tsuna howled.

Using whatever strength she had in her, she steered the skull rex away from her father and brother before the animal slammed his head into a nearby tree. Acting quick, Tsuna leapt off in the nick of time before rolling on the ground. She watched the rex shake his head from the confusion before focusing his attention on the human that stood before her.

The large predator was curious for it had never seen a creature like Tusna before. However, after getting a whiff of her scent, the pupil of its remaining golden eye shrunk before it focused its attention on Tsuna. The creature growled and snarled his large teeth as it recognized Tsuna's scent. The skull rex knew that this was the strange creature that invaded its home.

Tsuna's heart began to race as she slowly took a step backward before the rex took a step forward. She started to take several steps backwards before the dinosaur took more steps forward. Soon enough, Tsuna turned around and ran for her life before she heard the skull rex give off a loud roar as it chased her.

Her heart was beating inside her chest so loud that Tsuna could hear the loud thumping noise ring in her ears. With every stride she took she dug her fingers and toes in the dirt beneath her and kicked it up as hard as she could. Sweat dripped down her forehead and flew into the wind as Tsuna looked for any possible chance of losing the dinosaur behind her.

Branches were broken, as logs were split open and the ground shook with immense power with every stride the skull rex made. Using the length of its body to its advantage, the skull rex lunged out and attempted to bite the ape woman in half. Unfortunately, his attempts were unsuccessful as Tsuna would dodge at the last second.

Fleeing for her life, an idea popped inside Tsuna's head. In a spit second she made a hard turn before running in a zig-zag path. She knew she couldn't outrun the rex in a straight path, but perhaps running in an irregular path would confuse it.

She turned her head and saw the skull rex have a stumble before readjusting his balance. The patten that Tsuna was running in seemed to be working. But as she looked back at the rex, she did not see what was in front of her as she soon felt a shock run through her body when she realized the ground ceased to exist.

The young woman lost her balance and fell face forward down a steep hill she did notice during her pursuit. Her world was turned upside down and right side up as she felt every branch, twig, and small rock on the way down. Her descent soon came to a surprise ending when the steep hill led to a cliff that sat over a small pond of blue water.

Tsuna's screams were heard across the jungle as she rolled off the cliff and fell into the clean bond. Her body made a large splash when she made contact with her left shoulder. The dirt, mud, and blood washed off her body as Tsuna opened her eyes and saw how she was now under water.

The human female swam up to the surface and gasped her air as she looked around and heard the roar of the skull rex somewhere in the jungle. Tsuna took a deep breath and dove back into the water. If she could find an underwater tunnel, it would help her escape to another body of water that was far away from imminent danger.

But as she searched for a clear escape, a thunderous splash occurred behind her. The skull rex dove into the large body of water and found Tsuna's hiding spot. For a brief moment Tsuna screamed but her cries could not be heard from underwater as she turned around and swam to the shore. It would seem that the tunnels were no longer an option.

The large dinosaur kicked its feet before swinging its large tail, propelling him closer to Tsuna. The tyrannosaur opened its large jaw, engulfing large amounts of fresh water, hoping it would snatch up the female human. However, Tsuna felt sand beneath her hands and feet and ran for her life once she reached the shore.

Gasping for air, Tsuna panted and grunted for her body had expelled most of its energy. But instead of collapsing, fear motivated her into running faster. She heard the skull rex breach the surface as she ran back into the jungle.

She felt the weight of her wet hair sink into her skin as she ran past large green leaves, lush vines, and vast bushes. Normally she would swing onto a vine and use the trees to her advantage, but because the dinosaur was hot on her trail, climbing up a tree or using a vine would allow her chaser to close the distance. For now all she could do was run.

But as Tsuna ran through the jungle, she looked up and found a cave up on a small hill. She did not know what lied within the dark cave nor did she cared. The skull rex was still on her and she needed to find an escape.

The human ran up the rocky hill and the inside the cave. At the last possible second she felt the hot breath of the rex on her back before hearing a loud chomping sound. While Tsuna ran deeper into the cave, the skull rex slammed its hard bone-like head at the entrance, hoping to burrow its large mouth.

Tsuna ran into a dead end, no more than fifty feet into the cave. She braced herself along the rock walls and felt the whole cave shake and rumble. Her eyes were widened while an expression of fear fell on her along with dirt and dust from the roof of the cave. She was stuck with no where else to go.

Soon enough the skull rex ceased his barrage of consecutive blows against the entrance of the cave before letting out a loud furious roar. Tsuna could finally breathe when the rumbling stopped. But as she sighed in relief, she felt a small tingly sensation.

The twenty-five year old woman looked down and saw a little spider crawl up her right shoulder. The arachnid couldn't have been no more than half an inch big, but it was enough to cause panic to the female Üngana.

Memories of when she was child came rushing back into Tsuna's mind. She remembered the first time she fell into a pit spider's trap and she could not forget the arachnid's horrific face. Her heart raced so fast and so loud, Tsuna swatted the spider with ease and ran to the entrance of the cave.

But as she reached the entrance, she saw the skull rex return with a thunderous vengeance as it roared and attempted to chomp Tsuna in half. She watched the jaws of the beast close in front of her as she was face to face with death itself and ran back into the cave. The skull rex continued to dig its way into the cave while Tsuna ran to end of the cave and quivered in fear.

She crouched in a nearby corner, and placed her hands above her ears before closing her eyes shut and released a loud cry for help. She felt small pieces of rock fall on top her head once more while the dry dust soaked in the tears that slip down her cheeks. With no where to go, she endured the rumbling of the cave.

The day went on, as little sunlight reached the entrance to the cave. But Tsuna could not tell if the sun was at its peak or if it was barely setting. She dared not to venture out the safety of her fortress, for she feared the tyrannosaur was still waiting for her.

At least she had the sweet sound of silence. It felt like it had been hours since the skull rex gave up on its second attempt at digging its head in the cave. She crouched in the cave and watched the ray of sunlight move across the entryway.

Soon it would be dark and Tsuna realized that she would have to wait for escape. But as she watched the sunlight begin to fade, she looked at the jungle before her and noticed that darkness was creeping in. Should she escape under the cover of night, sure she could evade the skull rex but the chances of running into grim raptors were high.

Her world soon became cold and dark, as Tsuna sat in her corner with her hands rubbing her forearms for warmth. With the moonlight beginning to reveal itself, the ape woman slowly crawled to the entryway of the cave. She peaked her head out ever so slowly and looked down beneath the steep hill.

At the base of the slope, the young woman saw the skull rex sleeping. She felt a sense of relief as she was glad to see that the large predator was taking a break from its attack. On the other hand, she also felt a small bit of fear swell up within her as she saw how the rex was still hunting her.

Tsuna looked up at the night sky and saw the stars twinkling while the moon graced Primordial with its radiance. Oh how she wanted to high tail it right there and then, but with the jungles even more dangerous at night, she crawled back into her cave. If she was to escape, she would have to eat at the brink of dawn.

While she waited for the sun to return, she cradled herself in a tight corner, hoping to get warm. She wondered about her family before several questions ran through her head.

What became of the tribe? Were her parents safe? Did her brother survive? What about the little ones? Were any of her nieces and nephews still alive?

One thought crept into a dark place of her inner thoughts.

Did they believe that she was already dead?

Despite her growth, she was still the hairless runt of the Ungana. Even after proving her worth on several occasions, she always had the help of her friends and family. But after being separated from her tribe, she was all alone. What made things worse was how she was trapped by the strongest predator of the island. Her chances of survival were slim.

While the moon made it's way across the black sky, Tsuna tried getting some sleep. She laid her back against the walls of the small cave and waited for morning. It wasn't long before the ape woman woke up and saw darkness of night fade into a warm dawn of a new day.

She crawled slowly out of her cave and looked down, only to see the rex was still sleeping. If she wanted to make her escape, now was the time.

Creeping ever so quietly, the human placed her knuckles gently on the slope of the hill. She watched the placement of her knuckles and feet, trying not to make any subtle noises. Her heart skipped a beat when her knuckle accidentally knocked a small pebble and watched it roll down.

Thankfully the little rock didn't go that far as Tsuna made her descent. Soon enough she was up close and personal with the skull rex to the point where she could touch its grey skin. She also watched the belly of the beast expand and compress itself as it breathed in the clean air.

The ape woman held her breath and quietly snuck around the face of the large predator before she made her way into the jungle.

The sun began to rise over the mountains and Tsuna felt a bit of relief knowing that the worst was behind her. She traversed through the jungle, hoping to reach the nesting ground her family was meant to reach. But as she walked along a dirt path, she heard a loud roar echo in the jungle.

Her heart began to race for she feared that that the skull rex was once again chasing her. Tsuna turned around and felt the ground shaking before she turn taile and ran as fast as the wind could carry her. However her attempt to flee was cut short when Tsuna tripped over a large dinosaur bone.

Right on cue, Tsuna watched the trees before her come crashing down before the skull rex found her. In an effort to defend herself, the Üngana woman grabbed the large bone and smacked it along the side of the oncoming reptile face. Splinters of bone, and shards of teeth exploded as Tsuna watched the femur bone snap in half, and the rex stammered back from immense pain.

With her one and only good tool destroyed, Tsuna looked down and saw a large tooth fall beside her. She grabbed it before crawling underneath a hollow tree that had many large roots. The skull rex saw the little ape flee and quickly jammed its mouth against the roots that were protecting Tsuna.

Her heart raced beyond measure. While this rex struggled to catch her, it wouldn't take long for the roots to crumble under the immense power of the dinosaur's jaws. At the base of the tree, Tsuna felt immense shock when she fell backwards.

She soon realized that she was at the center of the tree before looking up and saw moment of escape. The young woman reached out her arms and pulled herself deeper into the tree and quickly made her way up. The skull rex noticed this as it took a step back and watched the human crawl upward within the tree.

While Tsuna quickly made her ascent, she felt her soul leave her body when the tyrannosaur bit down on the tree itself. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw a wall of teeth surround her. If the tree hadn't been strong enough, Tsuna would have surely been killed.

But the tree wasn't going to hold out forever as Tsuna watched the wood crack. The young woman climbed to the top as fast as she could before seeing a whole big enough for her to squeeze out.

The Üngana crawled out and found herself on a branch high above the skull rex. Before she could use the trees to her advantage, she felt the branch fall beneath her for the large predator bit the hollow tree in half. Tsuna thought that this would be the end, as she would fall into the jaws of the dinosaur.

Her fears came to an abrupt end when she landed on top of the skull of the beast that had been hunting her for almost two days. She used both hands to hold onto the rex's top jaw but her sudden hand placement caused her to let go of her rex tooth. The ape woman stretched out her left leg and grabbed the falling tooth with her foot before things got more interesting.

The skull rex was fed up with these false moments of hope as it ran through the jungle and made an attempt to shake off the woman on top of his face. Tsuna held on for dear life as the rex kicked and bucked around the jungle, trampeling everything in its path. But as the rex ran through the jungle, Tsuna remembered that she had something that could help her.

With one hand holding on for dear life, she used the other to reach down to her foot and grabbed the tooth she had received moments ago. The ape woman grabbed the large sharp tooth and held it with a firm grip. Without a moment's hesitation, Tsuna viciously began to jam it alongside the skull rex's face.

The large dinosaur roared in pain as blood began to drip down its grey skin. This only made the creature even more angry as it continued its rampage through the jungle. Tsuna felt the two of them reach an incline before she focused her aim and looked at the dinosaur's remaining yellow eye.

The last thing the tyrannosaur saw was a human girl jam its own tooth into its eye. The dinosaur's rampage came to a halt as it raised its body in the air and roared in pain and agony. Tsuna held on as her body dangled in the air before the skull rex run wildly before going up a steep hill.

Tsuna grabbed the tooth and ferociously drove it deeper into the reptile's skull as blood and yellow ooze splashed her fist before squirting her face. In a moment of weakness, Tsuna was blind and used one hand to wipe her face. Once she gained her vision, her heart sank.

Admist all the chaos and confusion, the skull rex was blindly running toward a steep rocky cliff. Tsuna looked around and saw a large tree growing on the edge and grabbed onto an oncoming vine and held on for dear life when she felt the rex's rough boney skin travel without her. She reached out her foot and grabbed the tooth of the dinosaur. Unfortunately, the blind skull rex felt the ground cease to exist as it unknowingly ran off the cliff and fell to its doom.

Tsuna climbed onto a branch above her and looked at the jungle canopy beneath her only to see that the large predator disappeared in the trees that were far below. She then took hold of the tooth she tretirved and saw how it was drenched in red blood and yellow eyeball.

Tsuna took a deep breath and victoriously roared at the top of her lungs. The twenty-five year old woman banged her chest proudly as she first looked at the jungle beneath her before turning to the sky. Her roar was long and loud for all of Primordial to hear.

However, after proclaiming her victory against the jungle's top predators, a strange sound unlike any other was heard. The ape woman turned her head before climbing to the tallest branch of the tree. When she reached the top, Tsuna looked out at and saw the vast blue ocean before focusing her attention on something peculiar. Approaching Primordial was a cargo ship - The S. S. Noble

The ship approached the island, puffing out smoke from its tall vents. It was entering its prime years for it was 1912 and it had been only several years since it was first built in London before it came under new ownership in America. The large ship was strong and relished the thought of traveling through new waters.

As Tsuna watched the strange vessel approach the rocky shores of Primordial, her curiosity warned her of the potential threat that was approaching her home. She made her decent down the tree before running off into the jungle to rejoin her tribe.

With the sun reaching the center of the sky, Tsuna had traveled through the jungle for hours before coming across a familiar sight. She felt sweet relief when she reached the nesting grounds. The apes took notice of her and rushed to the human.

Tsuna felt warmth unlike any other when every ape swarmed her and embraced her with warm hugs. The little ones cheered with joy as they were excited to see how their Aunty Tsuna was still alive. Even her friends, who once bullied her in childhood, were happy to see their favorite hairless wonder return home.

Üma rushed over to her daughter and saw how she was covered in dry blood. The mother ape held Tsuna in a long embrace and the human hurried her face in the gorilla's brown fur. Maku also joined in as he was worried sick about his dear baby sister. Tsuna grunted and reassured her mother and brother that she was alright.

Finally came Taruk, who slowly approached Tsuna gave her a stern look. Had she ran with the females she would have been safe. Instead, the chief of the Üngana watched his only daughter lead a rampaging skull rex away from their family.

The male gorilla allowed himself to release the stress he had been carrying as he grabbed hold of Tsuna and held her tight in his arms. The young woman couldn't help but shed a tear as she was happy to feel her father's love rather than his anger. She then broke the hug and showed the chief the broken tooth she retrieved from the skull rex.

The apes grunted and moaned all around for they were shocked to see how Tsuna was able to kill a strong dinosaur. Taruk looked to Maku and allowed his son to step forward in front of Tsuna.

Go. The chief grunted.

The brown gorilla felt a sense of joy for he had proven to his father that he was ready to lead the tribe. Maku stood proudly in front of Tsuna and acknowledged this incredible achievement.

Well done, Sister. Maku grunted

Joy could be seen on Tsuna's face for she had proven to everyone that she was capable of great things. What made the moment even better was how her brother, the new chief, was the first to congratulate her. Soon the other apes, both small and large, puffed out their chests and cheered with excitement as they banged on their chests.

Amidst the celebration, Tsuna remembered the strange thing she saw approaching their home. She made several grunts and howls to kindly silence the crowd of cheering gorillas. Maku stopped and silenced the crowd, allowing his sister to speak.

Strangers are approaching. Tsuna cautiously grunted. We must travel deeper into the jungle.

Maku heard Tsuna's warning and took it to heart as he looked to all the Üngana and gave a loud grunt. Soon enough the apes acknowledged their leader and did not question Tsuna's words.

One by one, the gorillas got up and formed a line before traveling deep in the dense jungle. Tsuna watched each of them disappear into the foliage before being the last to follow. The young woman took one last look at the nesting ground before she herself ventured into the mysterious jungles of Primordial and disappeared.

The End

And with that, that is the end of our story. So what did you think? I wanted to reintroduce the skull rex that we've seen throughout the story as it is the same one we see in Chapter One and in Chapter Seven.

Also when it came to the ending, one film that was a big influence was Apacolypto in terms of shocking endings. Another influence was the ending to Season One of PRIMAL. I wanted to have some shocking revelation that would surprise everyone and what better way to do so than by having the whole story set between 1887 and 1912.

Now to answer several questions. Tsuna (originally named Isabel) is the last surviving member of an American/British expedition that accidentally discovered Primordial in 1887. Also her real parents were biologists before they were killed on the island by the same skull rex we see in Chapter One.

I say this because probably some of you were wondering about her origins and because I don't have plans on making a sequel, I though I'd at least give you some information about Tsuna's origins.

Thank you for reading this story! I hope you enjoyed it!
