The Girl and The Sword

(1. A Close Call)

I am running, running for a long time now. 6 hours, to be precise. My legs are feeling like made of lead. I need water… oh my God.

I think I see a water station up ahead! My parched throat and dry lips are screaming for relief. I force my leaden legs to move faster, my feet pounding the pavement in a slow, agonizing rhythm.

As I approach the water station, I see a volunteer holding out a cup of water. I grab it gratefully and pour the cool liquid down my throat, feeling it revive me, if only for a moment.

But as I hand the cup back to the volunteer, I catch a glimpse of the clock on the nearby billboard. 6 hours and 15 minutes. I still have so far to go. My heart sinks, and my legs feel even heavier than before.

Suddenly, I hear the sound of cheering and music up ahead. I round a corner and see a crowd of spectators lining the road, holding signs and banners. One of them catches my eye: "You've got this! Only 10 miles to go!"

I feel a surge of adrenaline and determination. I can do this. I just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other. I take a deep breath, grit my teeth, and start running again, when my heart skips a beat as I realize the crowd, the signs, the music - it's all just a clever illusion. I'm not sure what's real and what's not. I spin around, searching for any sign of the assassin, but there's no one in sight. (Then what did I drink just now?!)

I start to run again, my senses on high alert(as alert as it can be after being chased for 6 hours by an assassin). I can feel eyes on me, watching me, waiting for me to let my guard down. I dare not look back, fearing what I might see.

Suddenly, I hear the sound of footsteps behind me. Light, quick footsteps, like someone is trying not to be heard. My instincts scream at me to run faster, but my legs are already burning with fatigue.

I take a deep breath and summon every last bit of energy I have. I remember Master Zorra's advice,"Concentration and constant vigilance". I pump my arms and legs as fast as I can, my eyes fixed on some unknown point ahead.

But no matter how fast I run, the footsteps behind me seem to be getting closer.I can feel the assassin's breath on the back of my neck, making the hairs stand on end. My heart is racing, and my legs are starting to give out. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep this up.

Just as I think I'm going to collapse, I see a narrow alleyway to my left. Without hesitation, I dart into the alley, hoping to lose the assassin in the maze of narrow passageways.

I run as fast as I can, my feet pounding the wet pavement. I can hear the assassin behind me, their footsteps echoing off the walls.

Suddenly, I see a glimmer of light ahead. I burst through the end of the alley and find myself in a crowded marketplace. People are milling about, shopping and chatting. I weave in and out of the stalls, desperate to lose the assassin in the crowd.

But as I glance over my shoulder, I see the assassin emerging from the alley(what a bummer), his eyes locked on me with an unnerving intensity. I know I have to keep moving if I want to stay alive.

Suddenly, a veiled girl swoops down, throwing a blinding flash of light towards the flash of light is so intense that it illuminates the entire marketplace, causing everyone to shield their eyes. I take advantage of the distraction to dart to the side, trying to put as much distance between myself and the assassin as possible.

As the light fades, I see the veiled girl standing in front of me, her eyes gleaming with a fierce inner light. She's dressed in a flowing red and green robe, and a opulent dagger hangs at her belt.

"Come with me," she whispers, grabbing my arm and pulling me through the crowd.

I stumble after her, still trying to process what just happened. Who is this mysterious girl, and why is she helping me?

We weave through the narrow streets, dodging merchants and traders. The girl moves with a confident stride, as if she knows the city like the back of her hand.

Finally, we duck into a small, unassuming doorway. The girl pushes me inside, then follows close behind, shutting the door behind us.

We're in a dimly lit room, with stone walls and a low ceiling. The air is thick with the scent of incense.

The girl turns to me, her eyes burning with intensity. "You're in danger," she whispers. "The assassin is just the beginning. There are those who will stop at nothing to capture you."

I'm taken aback by her words. What does she mean? Why am I in danger?

But before I can ask any questions, the girl reaches up and pulls back her veil, revealing a face that takes my breath away.
