AN: I do own Harry Potter. I know this is late, but I overcomplicated things for myself.
Also, I know I am taking some fairytales of various locations and adapting them to my purposes.
The Take-Over Part One
"I can't do this!" was what Death was greeted with once the dorm room was emptied of all except Harry. The Quidditch game had everyone else from the dorm leaving for breakfast in a rush, but Harry was having a severe case of nerves. Not even Ron or Neville could get him to leave the room for a bite to eat first.
Death sighed. This was one thing about teens (or people really) that he was glad that he missed: the dramatics at huge life changing events. However, thousands of years of experience had him contemplating his options. Should he be stern and get talk back or ignore him and let him wallow for a minute or attempt to calm him down? Depends on how he responds, he decided.
"Harry."
Harry turned and looked at Death, who was standing in the dorm room. He was hunched against the window frame, staring down at the Quidditch pitch, holding onto the frame, looking miserable.
"Harry, come sit down."
"Death?"
"Harry?"
Harry walked over to his bed and sat.
Death copied him and sat on the bed facing him, rubbing Harry's shoulder reassuringly as he did so.
"Can I do this? Actually do this?"
Harry sat, leaning forward looking at Death intently. His hands were clasped together, but past his knees as Harry was also hugging his knees.
Death was taking up a similar position on the bed across from him.
"I know that I am not omniscient, despite knowing way more about things than any human. I do know I am prescient about most anything to do with my domains, but not about things that don't. However, what I do know about you is what I have seen of you throughout your life. I do know that you will always be part of my family, and one day, when your present family is gone, I will still be with you. When your country has another disaster a hundred years from now, you will still be part of my family."
"How can you say that? Everybody has failed me whether they wanted to or not. How can I tell that you won't fail me either? How can I tell that I won't fail?"
"Making mistakes is part of learning. Yes, for now much of your learning has been designed by that very optimistic demigod of villains and their corresponding heroes, but unlike you, his long life and almost impregnability is not actually forever."
"Will I turn into a bird?"
"No, you might get wings, but that is as bird-like as you will get. As for actually doing this, I assume you are talking about claiming a crown that has been unclaimed for longer than the Wizengamot has been around? Even though the rules for your government has rules for claiming it? And you've set things up to do so? With all the things that Lugh and I want to teach you and the things that you will have to do once you are rightfully in control?
"I will not lie," Death continued, "you will need a Regent or Lord Protector, someone to cover for you while you are gone. It will be longer than it seems, because though the stories are exaggerated, the reality of it is that time Underhill is slower than time here.
"Thank you. I know that I've been..." Harry waved his hands around in exasperation.
"Moody, yes, I know," Death gave a quick half smile that Harry returned. "To be honest, it's part of life as a teenager, let alone someone going through a lot of stress just dealing with a sudden increase of stress."
"I am not stressed."
"Now that's not true. I know from experience that preparation for the rulership of a country is stressful. Ruling one is too."
"Sorry, I forgot you would know that."
"Well, I do. Hug?"
After a good long hug, Death asked, "Now, don't you have a game you have to be at?"
"Oh, yeah."
"See you soon."
"Bye for now, Death."
"So, for a quick run down of what we're doing: Harry is going to run for Minister, which he can because he has now completed his NEWTS and he has been legally declared independent for three years and over, as well as defeating an enemy of the British Magical World. However, because the Ministry vote only comes up in a year automatically, that means that we have to wait a few months to start canvassing for it. What we can do right now is try to get you as Chief Warlock, which we've already started trying to sway people for. Once Harry has both, we need to be ready for uprising, even immediate fighting back. Both extreme sides will have people that do not want him as king, and we know the current one may not let it go quietly. People may like the idea of a king, but they don't know the reality of it, such as a change in the way the government works."
The heads of everyone in the Black's dining room were leaning forward at the speaker, Cedric Diggory.
He continued, "While the traditionally Dark families are starting to come to our side, beyond those who swore to Harry, it is the Neutral families that are going to be the hard part. They are the ones who are tired of the constant fighting between the Dark and Light factions. We will need to show them that people from both sides are willing to work with Harry, that Harry isn't just going to continue the fighting, that Harry has a neutral ground that we can all agree on. This means that Harry is going to need to have an introduction to society. To combat this, we will be hosting a luncheon to which we will be inviting everybody on the Wizengamot and everyone that works within the Ministry. Harry will also be going to be seen at the Malfoys and Abbots parties, which will lend legitimacy, as sponsors, as Harry was not introduced to the world of the influential as he would have been had he lived in the Wizarding world, so he'll need that.
"Does anybody have anything to say about any of that?"
"Yes, about the luncheon, is it only going to be lunch?"
"There will be speeches, of course. At least one adult besides Black and one of Harry's classmates, as well as Harry, will need to do speeches, as well as whoever hosts it. It is going to very much be an introduction thing."
"What about a knock-up Quidditch game for those younger? As it will be a lunch thing, that leaves time to play around in day light."
"Hey, I know that this is a Muggle thing, but do you guys play golf or bowling? I was thinking of setting up some sort of game that doesn't require as much exercise for the older folk."
"Fencing matches, maybe?"
There came an excited gleam to many of the men's faces at that suggestion.
"I would second a fencing match." said Lucius Malfoy. "It would mean sending out the invitations sooner rather than later so any of those willing and able have time to sharpen up their skills. We would also need a healer to be on hand for obvious reasons."
Mrs. Tonks raised her head, "As the only healer here, I am willing to do my part."
"I will mark that down. Thank you. Any other suggestions?"
The luncheon party was a success. It was held at the Longbottom's place, because of the lack of space in London. As far as turn out, there were many people there that he knew of, but hadn't talked to, usually the ones that weren't in Gryffindor with him. It was nice that Susan Bones, Hannah Abbot, and others were there, as it gave Harry someone to talk to more conversationally. While Harry was bored with greeting everyone else, it was fun to later pick up a broom and play in the skies for a bit. He did skip a game or two to watch the fencing and talk, but pretty much spent his afternoon in the air. It seemed from the adult's faces and from speaking with his godfather that that was expected.
Canvassing to become Minister ended up being more dangerous than Harry had thought from the Muggle world. Being labeled a traitor to the Ministry by Ministry stooges was a real thing that Harry thought was weird. Counter arguments helped, as did learning who could be approached versus who believed Ministry propaganda. Reminding people that elections were less than a year away was one of his counter arguments, so therefore it wasn't treason as much as doing his civil duty and showing a face that people wanted. While many of the people within the Ministry still thought it a hoax that Voldemort had come back, the otherwise undetermined origin of the fiendfire incident was still something that was gossiped about. Harry also learned that being a candidate for Minister also meant sabotage from other candidates or candidate supporters.
Harry did end up becoming Chief Warlock within eight months from graduating. It took many meetings with his own party, the rest of the Neutrals, but they did agree to have him as party leader. Most of that was because each of the Neutral party either had business that was used by everyone and didn't want to cut business, or didn't agree with all of either side. Whether it was stated position and how to go about it, or some points were right here but not there, or just the fact that they didn't want to make that choice between family members, or felt obligated through honour to remain out of it to keep getting business to or from both sides, none of the grey party would join any of the current insurgent parties. The fact that Harry wanted to end that war was huge to each of them. While there were some business things that hadn't been thought of that were brought up, they were good things to check into. As soon as Harry was announced as party leader for the Neutrals, those in the Wizengamot from his Order joined him in the Neutrals. The day he was announced as party leader, he became Chief Warlock.
That also became the day that the former Chief Warlock began actively acting against him. Thankfully having members that were used to such actions, they were soon aware of it. Thankfully for now it was mainly spying. There was some fist fights and paper articles written against him, but he was also in a place to retaliate with more paper articles. The Weasley twins were a lot of help with popularity, including help such as a poster, and products made for them. They were also in a position to spy, as the Weasley Seniors rejoined the Order of the Phoenix.
"Hey, we've been calling ourselves the Order. What are we the Order of?"
"Order of the Lily?"
"Harry's Order?"
"Potter's Order?"
"That may sound kind of like a specific type of merchant's guild."
"Order of those leaving the other orders?"
"The Grey Order?"
"The Invisible Order?"
"How about the King's Order?"
"Did we agree on something previously?"
"No, we have not agreed on a name other than the Order previously. If we have, we are no longer in documentation of it."
"What about Mercy's Order?"
"Or the Order of Mercy?"
"The Order For The Return Of The King."
"Only, we're not getting one from one of the old lines. We're setting up a new one."
"Order of Death's Mercy."
"Why are we including Death again?"
"Um, because of that symbol on the bottom of our new marks?"
"Hallowed Order, then?"
"What about just the Order of the King's Guard? We are going to be that, aren't we?"
"Yes, or most of us at least."
"Do we even have a uniform?"
"Wait, first, we need to vote on a name. Here's the list of all of the ones suggested this evening, and please pick your top three. We'll vote on the top three from there."
After a few minutes, there was a tally.
"Okay, the top place was Order of the King's Guard, Order of Death's Mercy, and Order of the Lily. Please vote for your favorite from there."
There was silence for a few more minutes.
"All right, we have chosen Order of the King's Guard as our name now. Whatever we named ourselves previously, due to loss of documentation and lack of memory in anyone's mind, is no longer applicable. Please write that down both on our meeting minutes and on a separate piece of paper and make sure to give one to someone else so we don't lose it."
"Next up, thank you for whoever brought it up, we will be discussing uniforms."
