The Reawakening: Friendship is Magic, but love is Eternal

"In this land of Equestria, long before the impact of the Princess of Friendship and her friends, the Mane Six as they became collectively known, Princess Celestia and her younger sister Princess Luna ruled the realm in tandem.

Celestia's domain was the day; responsible for the rising and setting of the sun and, as the elder sibling, was entrusted with the duties of court: decrees, meetings with dignitaries and nobility, proclamations, and generally the running of the kingdom.

Luna's domain was the night; responsible for the rising and setting of the moon and as the younger sibling had less in the way of responsibility but whose role was no less important. Princess Luna was responsible for the dream world of her subjects; ensuring their dreams did not become nightmares.

However, because Luna's domain was the night, she did not interact with her subjects in a more social manner.

In short, she was lonely. Her subjects only knew their princess in their dreams for during the day she slept.

All was not lost, however.

Unlike her sister who was surrounded by advisors and delegates, Luna had no need for such retainers but there was one that saw her plight and gave Luna a bit of prestige in the process by devoting himself to her; a dragon named Julius.

Unlike the fierce, fire-breathing creatures of his homeland, Julius was raised in Equestria and was wise, gentle, and fiercely loyal. His emerald-green scales shimmered under the moonlight, his violet eyes a testament to his bond with the Princess of the Night.

Julius served not only as an advisor but as a confidant and friend. They shared many nights discussing the dreams of her subjects, the mysteries of the stars, and the philosophies of time and existence. It was during these tranquil moments that Julius found his calling to her happiness, blossoming into a friendship bound by duty and respect for his princess.

Yet, despite his efforts, the tranquility was shattered as Luna's heart was consumed by jealousy and darkness of her sister, transforming her into Nightmare Moon. Julius, in his attempt to save her, inadvertently played a role in her downfall. He was too late in realizing the depth of her anguish and failed to prevent her transformation. When Celestia wielded the Elements of Harmony to banish her sister to the moon, Julius felt the weight of his failure crush his spirit. He withdrew from Equestria, burdened by guilt and sorrow, and wandered the lands as a shadow of his former self. For you see, even as Nightmare Moon, Luna recognized his devotion and loyalty to her. It was enough to distract her so Celestia could strike and it was successful, if unintentional, for the dragon believed he could have convinced her to stand down from her path of destruction and anguish.

Despite Celestia's constant reassurance that it was not his fault and that for his efforts, she absolved him of all wrongdoing, Julius countered by asking her to place herself in Luna's position. Julius believed that, in Luna's mind, he had betrayed her trust and her heart.

The centuries passed, and the legend of Nightmare Moon became a distant memory. Julius lived in solitude, haunted by the image of Luna, her eyes once filled with warmth now cold and distant. He spent his days seeking redemption, aiding those in need, hoping that his actions might in some way atone for his perceived sins. The only solace he found was in the night, where he could feel her presence, albeit from afar. He made his roost in the old Castle of the Twin Sisters; the first castle Luna and Celestia ruled from that had been badly damaged during the final battle between the sisters.

The castle still held many objects and knowledge from books to spells in the parts that were not damaged and the Evergreen Forest where the castle ruins were located were the perfect cover and defense from intruders.

As a dragon, he was the most dominant and terrible thing in the forest; an apex creature and so none of the inhabitants of said forest would disturb him.

He made what repairs to the castle that he could, but it was still a ruin if ever there was another name for it.

A millennium later, the stars aligned, and Nightmare Moon returned to Equestria. But it was the power of friendship, embodied by Twilight Sparkle and her new friends, that freed Luna from the darkness. As Luna was restored to her true form and had reconciled with her sister, Julius still maintained his distance until the timing was right for him to reveal himself to the Princesses again.

Now, the sisters have announced their retirement and named you Twilight Sparkle, their successor. I have watched your progress little one, you are more than fit and ready for the position." Julius said regaling the ponies with the story they knew so well, speaking in the third person.

"Wait, you've been here the whole time? How come we haven't seen you?" Twilight asked.

"You didn't venture deep enough little one. This castle is old and has old magics, traps, spells, hidden paths and more. You could spend a whole year exploring and not come close to finding it all." Julius said shifting.

"But why reveal yourself now? we could have used your help on so many occasions?" Twilight asked.

"Yeah, a dragon like you is rare in Equestria, I thought I was the only one" Spike said.

"Believe me, there were plenty of times I wish I could have but if I had, would you all have grown and learned the way you have? You have evolved the Elements of Harmony beyond what their creators intended, even rescued said creators in the process; you have opened a school to teach the magic that is Friendship to all creatures from Griffons to Yaks thus improving relations with those countries. You found the hippogryphs long thought to be destroyed, saved the Crystal Empire and Equestria multiple times, defeated the Storm King, Sombra, Tirek and others all without my aide. No Twilight Sparkle, my time as a force in Equestria was passed a thousand years ago. Yes, you might have benefitted from my involvement and as the ruler of Equestria, I would offer my services. While I have been idle in this land, I have not been uninformed." Julius indicated several glowing orbs on stands that glowed faintly.

Twilight recognized the magical devices from her studies.

"But why didn't you come out?" Applejack asked.

"Yeah, there was no need to hide; we could have been friends a loooooooong time ago" Pinkie Pie added.

Julius chuckled and said "Indeed."

"Pfft, it would have made us like twenty percent cooler" Rainbow Dash said.

"Perhaps he was just shy" Fluttershy said quietly.

"No little ponies; it had nothing to do with being bashful. It was finding the proper time and method to apologize to Luna. Rarity, you understand this yes?" Julius asked the white and purple pony.

"Of course darling; such a friendship after such a long time needs consideration to be appropriate, heartfelt and genuine. Simply showing up after a millennium and saying 'I'm still here and I'm sorry' simply won't do. Particularly since your friendship goes deeper than that." Rarity said.

"If Luna means that much to 'ya, you should go and talk to her before you don't have the chance to anymore" Applejack said.

"You could do it at the coronation!" Rainbow Dash said.

"That's a great idea! I'm sure they would be surprised, even happy to see you again." Twilight added.

"We could throw the biggest coronation-welcome-back-I-missed-you-and-I'm-sorry-retirement-reunion party EVER!" Pinkie Pie exclaimed.

"Oh my" Fluttershy added, albeit far more reserved.

"Plus, who wouldn't want to see another dragon attend a coronation?" Rainbow Dash added.

Despite his age, Julius was only a head taller than the current Dragon Lord Ember but his movements were like a dance; graceful, planned, elegant.

"I appreciate the offer and I accept your friendship, but I will decline your invite to attend the coronation." Julius said.

"But…why?" Spike asked.

"Don't you want to reconcile with Princess Luna?" Twilight asked.

"Of course I do Twilight, but this is something that should not be public or would take away from your coronation. This is a private matter with a deep personal consequence not just for me, but for Luna and by extension, Celestia as well. As a princess, you understand Twilight that acting on feelings at the wrong moment have farther reaching consequences than intended. Luna and Celestia are far less cordial when you are present but make no mistake, they are well versed in court etiquette. You may have noticed it more prevalent in Luna than in Celestia, the way she speaks, how she acts, her seeming ignorance to certain common concepts everypony else knows and embodies?" Julius asked.

The ponies looked at each other knowingly.

Princess Luna was…more removed from the common mannerisms and speech of others and acted more like princesses of old.

"I thought so. Luna's constitution is far more fragile than she or anyone would care to admit and must be handled delicately…I was her most loyal and trusted advisor and friend; if I were to appear at a coronation, the shock, the emotions would be far more than she would be comfortable or appropriate. But…maybe you all can still help." Julius said rising on two legs, his wings draped over him like a cape.

"How?" Twilight asked.

The coronation was an absolute disaster.

Everything that could go wrong did.

Julius would have thought it comical if it wasn't such an important ordeal.

Throughout the celebration, he remained hidden and in the aftermath, when it was only Twilight and her friends and the two princesses, did he wait for the appropriate moment.

"While we will still be here if you need us, it's time for us to be on our way" Celestia said.

"You're leaving!?" Twilight said shocked.

"We hope you'll come and visit us in Silver Shoals" Luna said.

"But now it's time for you to rule on your own. You're all more than capable" Celestia finished.

"Thank you…for everything" Twilight said as she threw herself at her longtime mentor and friend embracing her.

The others joined in a large group hug.

Julius cleared his throat gently as he stood cloaked among the empty tables.

"Oh! Sorry. Princesses…I invited someone we met in your old castle. He's very important to you both but more so to you Luna. He's waited for a long time to make sure what he has to say was at the right time and that nothing else would get in the way of it." Twilight said as the hug broke apart.

Julius walked gently to Luna and Celestia who sat back on their haunches confused, intrigued and uncertain.

Without removing his cloak, Julius took a knee in front of them, specifically Luna, and taking her hoof, pressed his head to it.

"My Princess of the Night, prithee I beg thy mercy and forgiveness." He said.

Both of the Alicorns gasped recognizing the not only the voice, but the tradition.

Luna withdrew her hoof, eyes wide.

Celestia covered her muzzle with the back of hers.

"It…cannot be" Luna whispered.

Julius revealed himself then, pulling back the hood of his cloak, his sad eyes looking directly at Luna's whose filled with tears.

"J…Julius?" she stammered.

"Yes my Princess. 'Tis I." he said not removing his gaze from hers.

"I thought thee…but, if now, why…?" Luna stammered trying to wrap her mind around what she was witnessing.

"I have not seen you since the last battle between my sister and I. You left without a word in shame and heartbroken, even though you were not to blame and I forgave any trespass" Celestia said equally flabbergasted.

"T'was not thee I trespassed against fair Celestia, still as radiant as the sun. Thy sister for whom I swore oath eternal was where my heart and mind lay after thy feud." Julius said.

"Laying it on a bit thick, ain't he?" Applejack whispered to Twilight.

"Shhh" Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie replied.

Luna backed away as if she had seen a terrible vision.

"Princess Luna, please I implore thee, I will explain all if thou wilst but have ear to my voice." Julian replied softly as he saw the mare retreat even farther.

"Sister, perhaps we should hear him?" Celestia placated, but Luna's gaze was far away. Backpeddling even more, her face a mix of sadness, shock and surprise.

"My Lady, please, I beg thee, for the sake of what once was and what might yet be, Luna. You have questions, many questions. You have feelings that needs be released, I would aid thee in all this and more if thou will attend me as we once did without fear." Julius all but begged her.

"No…not again, not again!" Luna exclaimed and turned, fleeing into the castle.

"I feared this would happen" he said to no one in particular.

"Princesses, with your permission, I would like to pursue her. What I will do next will be…challenging for me, for Luna and for your relationship Celestia." Julius said.

"What will you do?" Twilight asked.

"Tell her the truth; show her the extent my words mean; how much she means to me." Julius looked at Celestia then, tears beginning to form in his eyes.

With sad eyes, Celestia said "I am not the ruler here any longer Julius, but to say that you do not care for my sister beyond simple friendship would be folly most unfitting. Twilight. The relationship Julius has with Luna goes beyond advisor and ruler; Luna is scared about her feelings for him and the past thousand years without him are making her very unstable right now."

"I could use your help in showing her that I meant and mean her no harm and that I only ever wanted to help her. Will you aide me Princess of Friendship in this, my greatest time of need to heal a possible broken heart, a tarnished trust, a love rekindled?" Julius said.

"Wait…You love Princess Luna?" Spike asked shocked.

"Thought you were the only dragon who had a crush on a pony, Spike?" Julius replied with a sad smile.

"While it has been many a moon, the joining of dragons and alicorns is not a new concept. The magics we wield are opposite of each other and thus together, they complete and balance the other. Though, such joinings are not as common now as they were in days of old." Celestia said.

"Come, I fear the longer Luna dwells on these thoughts, the more unstable she can become." Julius said.

"Unstable?" Twilight said.

"Nightmare Moon is still a threat within Luna, while greatly weakened from her progress with all of you, her alter ego is not completely gone. Seeing me, Nightmare Moon seeks to reassert her control over Luna. She will work hard to play upon her doubts and insecurities. We may have a fight on our hands, Twilight, I would recommend you exchange Rarity's beautiful work for attire more befitting." Julius said taking off after Luna, dropping his cloak.

Celestia took off after the emerald dragon and after a brief moment of hesitation, Twilight and the others followed suit.

Catching up with Celestia, Twilight asked "How does he know so much?"

"Julius made it his life's work to help Luna in every way. He's loved her since she was a young Filly. I won't deny, her state is partially my fault for she has always lived in my shadow and has always struggled socially. Julius sacrificed much to give her that semblance of normalcy and that blossomed into something beyond friendship. Julius would do anything Luna would command, including what she would as Nightmare Moon." Celestia said as their hooves clattered against the stone.

"Julius said he played a part in Luna's banishment and blamed himself for it." Twilight said.

"Falsely so; Julius believed he distracted her to give me an opening to use the Elements of Harmony to seal her away. The truth is, if I had waited just a bit longer he might have convinced her to give up her path of destruction. Even as Nightmare Moon, Luna respected and trusted him enough to listen to him for he gave her what she sought most: companionship and with it loyalty, kindness and respect, all things I failed to provide." Celestia replied a bit downhearted.

"But…you and Luna made amends, all was forgiven, right?" Fluttershy asked.

"Indeed, the feud between us is over, but with Julius returned, she is lost about how to feel now for she loves him the same way but duty separated the joining. I understand why now he waited to reveal himself. With us retiring, we are no longer bound by royal duties and the pressures and consequences of it. Julius was always a wise dragon." Celestia said.

"Move! All of you, vacate this area now, protect the ponies outside the walls!" Julius called to the guards that were wondering what had transpired.

"Do as he says, Equestria might be in danger, we will handle it but other ponies might not know, muster outside the walls and wait for word!" Twilight called to them.

"Well said my pupil" Celestia said as several doors opened where Luna charged ahead, Julius close on her heels.

Luna led them all into the throne room where she stopped at the foot of the stairs of the dais where she cried and panted simultaneously.

Julius and the others stopped several paces from her.

"Luna, my princess please, I beg thee, ask what thou wilst of me and I shall reveal all." Julius said also winded, doubling over.

"'Ask what thou wilst?' After a thousand years art thou still so loyal?" Luna said, her voice becoming echoing, deeper, filled with power.

"Do not let her consume you Luna, you are stronger than she!" Julius said approaching Luna as her power began to grow.

"You betrayed my trust!" Luna growled, struggling to control Nightmare Moon's ascendence.

"Nay Princess! I sought to convince you to give up your hate and anger, never betray your trust and certainly not thy heart." Julius said struggling against the growing storm of power but closing the distance nonetheless .

"Thou claimst to love me and yet joined with my sister to strike me down!" Luna's voice changed to that of Nightmare Moon, her physique following suit as she slowly lost her struggle.

"Thou hast made peace with thy sibling for transgressions past; tis now my time to do likewise. Loyal have I always been to thee but more than that oh Dreamwalker, oh glorious Nightwatcher." Julius placated her as Luna's magic transformed her into Nightmare Moon.

"And what else wouldst thou be but loyal lapdag that stole from thy mistresses table—mmmph" Nightmare Moon was cut off as the dragon pressed his lips to hers, cupping her chin with both talons in a deep and passionate kiss.

Nightmare Moon's power was frozen in time, a phenomenon none of them had ever seen.

Parting, her full silver eyes wept tears of incandescent silver, her armor looked more tarnished and less radiant.

"I love thee Princess, as Luna, not this mare of vengeance and hate but whether Nightmare Moon or Princess Luna mine heart is thine and beats for thee for thou art worth the sacrifice and always have been. Be you gone Nightmare Moon, leave my Princess in peace." Julius said.

"Like friendship, love is a special kind of magic that crosses all boundaries." Celestia said looking on.

"You…love me?" Nightmare Moon struggled to say as her power began to dwindle.

"The power of friendship proved that Luna; even now, we forgive you, he asks for yours without any reward or expectation." Twilight Sparkle said.

"Please Luna, you need not feel this any longer. You have friends and subjects that adore you and a dragon that would sacrifice himself for your happiness. If thou art angry with me then take thy vengeance and be done with Nightmare Moon forever." Julius said.

"You…love me." She repeated, now a statement rather than a question.

"Hear me; this be my vow; I love thee with all that I am; body, mind, spirit and heart are thine and have always been. I sought thee out at this moment in time because the pressures of thy station are ending. For so long both of us have devoted to others, not each other. Now that thou hast completed thy obligations to thy subjects, is it not time to focus on thy own heart and soul?" Julius said still cupping Nightmare Moon under her chin, the mare continuing to look at him with tears in her own eyes, her power completely frozen, her lower lip quivering.

"You are free Nightmare Moon, your purpose has been served. Go in peace and content in that you were successful in your goal. You are loved beyond anything you believed possible." Julius said, his body emitting a soft green glow, a tendril of light stretched from the place over his heart to her own.

"If thou needest any more proof of my word or devotion; thy sister and friends stand hither in witness and support; not to confine or challenge thee but to support and love thee; to aid thee through this challenge, all thou needest do is speak the word." The dragon said, the light of the tendril growing.

Nightmare Moon smiled a genuine smile of contentment, not malice or hatred.

She bowed her head and the white light consumed her form briefly.

The light withdrew and Nightmare Moon was no more; Luna had returned to her natural form.

"She…is gone. Nightmare Moon…I feel her not. Not suppressed or cage, she is gone, her presence is not there!" Luna said her tears beginning anew but in happiness, as if a weight was finally lifted.

"Julius…what have you done?" Celestia said concerned.

"What I promised Princess. Friendship might be forever, but love makes one do…hngh, foolish things." Julius winced as if pained as his chest still glowed.

"Oh Julius…thou fool." Luna said wrapping her wings and front legs around him.

"Celestia, I don't understand, what happened?" Twilight asked.

"Julius took Nightmare Moon from Luna into himself. All the she embodied, he contained within himself. He convinced her to let go of the hate she felt and Nightmare Moon now resides inside him instead of Luna. The task and magic required to do this is immense and taxing. It is not done idly; such magic was stored away deep and secured due to it's risks." Celestia said.

"Risks to Alicorns Princess, not to Dragons. Remember your lessons Celestia." Julius said labored.

"I cannot assist you in this Julius, the risk to all of us—" Celestia began but he cut her off.

"You too have your demons Celestia." He said gently trying to rise but only able to come to his knees as Luna supported him.

"No, I will not. Julius do not ask me to do this." Celestia said finding the thread of thought he was leading.

"Dost thou wish to be free Princess? What of thy sister, hmm? It may have been a millennium, but I know thee Celestia Dawnbringer. Daybreaker resides in thee as Nightmare Moon did thy sibling. Light and Dark cannot exist independently Celestia, you know this. I have studied a thousand years for this moment. Make thy repentance complete." Julius said.

"But…you're safety—" Celestia began.

"Courage Princess. 'tis not the absence of fear, but acting in spite of it. Like Luna, you have hidden and contained your darker side, especially from your student whom you now pass your mantle. What example then do you set for her by shirking from that which you know is proper and correct?" Julius asked, his strength somewhat returning, Luna still weeping against him as he hugged her.

"There was a reason that magic was forbidden." Celestia said adamant.

"Yes; that reason stands before you now as your friend and advisor. The lynchpin, the key to that spell. Tell me Celestia, did Star Swirl the Bearded ever have you study a spell for a thousand years when ye tutored under him?" Julius said, his words visibly stinging the alicorn as she flinched.

"No" she replied honestly.

"Thou art wise, fair and just Celestia. Humility is a difficult path to walk, especially for a Princess. Doth thou not trust me as you once did? Luna has with far greater to lose I might add. Let us be done with this matter for good and afterwards I will submit to whatever recompense you and your pupil decide for breaking your law with this magic." Julius said.

"That is assuming you succeed" Celestia said.

"Then it is worth the sacrifice my princess and my judgment be already set. Your freedom, your sister's freedom, your pupil's and her friend's freedom from this threat you have contained within yourself for the good of Equestria is worth it. You have not heard from me for a thousand years, Celestia, do you profess now you would not lose me a second time? Even if my heart belongs with thy sibling?" Julius said, again his words had a visible impact on the alicorn.

Twilight and her friends came to her side supporting her.

"I may not understand all the magic that is happening here, but I have a good feeling that what he's saying is correct" Twilight said looking at her cutie mark which flashed and glowed as it once did when the Table had called her or her friends to solve a friendship problem.

Looking at them all, Celestia saw all of their cutie marks flashing and glowing the same as Twilight Sparkles'.

Smiling and bowing her head, Celestia said "You have always been wise Julius and when Twilight says this is a friendship problem that needs resolution; I'm inclined to listen to wiser minds. Very well." Celestia said.

"Fear not Princess, thou art not alone, and neither am I. If you sought to see the power of friendship and love that did not turn thine enemies to stone statues, let this be proof that you have taught your pupil well. Have faith." Julius said rising to his full height.

Luna pulled him down to her level and kissed him as he had her briefly before releasing him then, standing behind him, her horn glowed with magic.

The light in Julius' chest rose in intensity as the tendril reached out towards Celestia who walked forward towards it, Twilight, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Spike and Starlight Glimmer, who had rushed in after them, followed suit, horns and cutie marks glowing.

The tendril stretched from his chest to Celestia's whose eyes turned white as she transformed into Daybreaker.

Unlike her sister, Daybreaker resisted "You cannot sway me like you can my sister. I rule supreme!" she said.

"What good is rule and power when you have none to rule over?" Julius said.

"Fool! I rule over all, including you!" Daybreaker said.

"If that is true, why can I resist thee? If your power be absolute, why then is it restrained?" Julius said.

Daybreaker attempted to lash out with a powerful burst of magic from her horn only to have whatever spell fail.

Instead of a blast, her horn let out barely a spark and fizzle.

"What!? How is this possible?" she exclaimed.

"Behold, your undoing" Julius said, the light in his chest growing to open a void where, in the center, Nightmare Moon stood proud, resolute, waiting.

"NO!" Daybreaker exclaimed once again failing to cast her spell.

"Come sister; we have no power any longer; their souls belong to them." Nightmare Moon said, the magic of her horn glowed just as the magic of the other ponies present intensified, pushing Daybreaker towards Nightmare Moon.

Daybreaker resisted with all her might, but to no avail.

The moment she reached Nightmare Moon, their horns touched and the void closed In a flash of light.

Celestia collapsed, Julius catching her before she struck the stairs of the dais.

Quickly, he set her down and moved away from them all, swaying, limping as if a struggle raged within him.

"Julius!" Luna exclaimed going to him, but he waved her off.

"Not…yet" he said through gritted teeth; the glow that surrounded him shifted between light and dark.

Twilight and her friends helped Celestia to her feet.

"What's happening?" Starlight Glimmer asked.

"The struggle between light and dark rages within him now. It is the same struggle we had a thousand years ago finally coming to a resolution but without destroying half of Equestria in the process." Celestia said.

"Instead it would destroy him if he cannot resist it." Luna added.

"We have to help him" Spike said.

"We cannot. This spell…it is beyond any of us. Dragon magic is violent, almost chaotic and difficult to control under the best of circumstances which is why they seldom use it. Julius is an exception but even then it may not be enough. He is simply caught within the fight, not taking sides, merely surviving the onslaught and ensuring no others suffer the wrath of Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon." Luna said.

Discord suddenly teleported in their midst.

"Did somebody say 'chaos'? I could have sworn I heard somebody mention my name." he said.

"Discord, please, help" Twilight said pointing with her hoof to Julius.

"Mmm that will be difficult. You see light and dark are opposites and keep each other in balance. Right now the struggle is for dominance, but if I introduce chaos and unbalance them, the resolution that is sought might not be what is desired." He said.

"How do you know?" Fluttershy asked.

"Oh Fluttershy, I am the master of chaos, when ripples of balance happen, they affect me as well. I felt this struggle and decided to investigate, after all, balance and chaos are like light and dark; two sides of the same coin and dragon magic is oooh so delectably unstable and chaotic. I could have soooo much fun with that type of magic" Discord said.

"DISCORD!" several of the ponies chastised.

"You all are such party poopers. I'm not even sure if I can influence the outcome of this struggle. Light and Dark cancel each other out as far as magic is concerned. The chaos magic Dragons wield in the presence of a balancing act is unpredictable, could favor one side, could favor the other. It really all depends on the dragon, truth be told." Discord said crossing his arms.

"What do you mean? I thought chaos magic was…unpredictable?" Celestia said.

"It is, but it's also influenceable to a degree. Dragons are powerful creatures, thus there control over chaos magic is stronger than a pony's, seriously, were none of you taught this in school? What does the EAA allow in your schools anyway, this is magic one-oh-one." Discord said.

"This has never been done before, it was not taught to us" Luna said as Julius braced a talon against a wall to steady himself, the aura around him fluctuating between light and dark.

"Well…that is something isn't it." Discord replied.

Fluttershy gave him 'the stare' and he cringed a bit.

"Alright, alright, I will try to boost his natural control over his own chaos magic so the Light and Dark can cancel each other properly but I can't guarantee it will work." Discord said.

"Please, you must try" Luna said, her tears streaming as she begged the draconequus.

Discords humorous demeanor broke then.

Seeing how important this was to Luna was, he became serious.

"Very well Princess, I will give it my best shot" Discord said snapping his fingers and disappearing from the group to in front of Julius.

"You can't…help here." Julius said to him, struggling.

"I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't try." Discord said.

"You…were warned." Julius said as Discord attempted to direct the chaos magic inside of Julius.

A green fiery explosion sent Discord into a pillar and set fire to the drapes along the windows.

"No…you…don't" Julius said struggling mightily against the forces arrayed inside him as he staggard to the balcony while Twilight and her group extinguished the flames.

Coming to Discord he said "I can't budge it. His magic is entirely focused on keeping the Light and Dark contained; there is no way to breach it otherwise it will react like that. However I was able to see that he is making progress. Nightmare Moon is resigned to her fate but Daybreaker is not. In short, Nightmare Moon is trying to helping his magic do it's thing and balance out the Alicorn magic. He's winning, but it's a struggle."

"Can we do anything to help?" Luna asked, angrily wiping her eyes.

"Not unless you want to take your alter egos back." Discord said.

"There must be something we can do" Twilight said.

"Shield…around me…until it is finished…save collateral damage" Julius called through gritted teeth, his eyes glowing emerald as his scales.

"Why didn't I think of that?" Discord said rising and rubbing his head then disappearing as quickly as he came.

The Alicorns and Unicorns in the group used their magic to cast a shield over Julius who managed to sit, crossing his legs and closed his eyes focusing inward.

All of the ponies, having put out the fires, gathered around the violet colored bubble.

"Julius…" Luna said touching a hoof to the shield.

Julius offered no response.

While the shield was an easy spell to cast and maintain, minutes became hours.

Spike was sent to fetch the guards and inform others who saw the magic what was happening. Explaining that they could not leave in order to maintain the spell, food and drink were brought to them as they all sat on cushions that were also brought to them.

"How long will this take?" Spike asked after a long while.

"As long as it takes Spike. The battle inside of him is a thousand years in the making and even with Nightmare Moon aiding, Daybreaker has always been the stronger magic-wise." Celestia said.

Luna did not acknowledge them, nor take any food or drink even as it was set before her.

Several times, green lightening bolts flashed inside the shield that, without it, would have caused considerable damage otherwise.

Luna did not move but stared intensely at the creature that on more than one occasion had pledged himself to her and her happiness and had now taken the greatest fear she ever created unto himself amidst professing his secret and yet, not so secret love to her.

So entranced, she did not raise the moon but allowed Twilight to do so, briefly releasing her magic on the shield and allowing the others to take the burden before returning to it.

Late into the night and no change occurred.

Luna pinned her affection to him unknown if he could hear; apologizing for her doubt and withdrawal, confessing all to him and weeping even more when he would not respond.

Celestia and Twilight comforted her in a winged embrace as the others wept upon her revelations.

Like Julius, she had withheld her feelings in the name of duty and his act of sacrifice proving his devotion beyond mere words; the magic of his friendship solidified in the act of love and his kiss. It was a love story worthy of song.

Even with orders to wake them should they fall asleep, it was in vain the ponies were able to do so; the guards unable to rouse them.

Luna especially succumbed due to her spent emotions and lack of food.

When Twilight had finally fallen asleep, the shield around him failed and the guards shifted their attention from keeping their monarchs awake to containing the power the dragon now possessed.

Thankfully, it was not needed.

As the shield failed, Julius' battle came to an end and amidst the points of spears he looked around and saw the sleeping creatures.

"All is well captain; the battle is over, the threat is neutralized, Equestria is forever rid of Nightmare Moon and Daybreaker." Julius said rising but swaying.

A guard caught him.

"Apologies, the fight…has drained me." Julius replied eyeing the untouched food by Luna.

He knelt and ate of the food stuffs and said "I will stay with them captain, you may stand down but stay alert; other threats to Equestria may use this opportunity." Julius said.

"With all due respect; I would feel safer ensuring your word is truth. Twilight and Celestia trust you which is good enough for me but you'll understand if I have my doubts." The unicorn said.

"As you wish captain, I'll not argue with good sense such as that, you do not know me and so it is to be expected. I promise, I would no more harm anyone here than you." Julius said sitting next to Luna and putting her upper half in his lap as he stroked her mane and wings.

"Thou hast been through much beloved. I am sorry I tortured thee such" He said to her sleeping form.

"The stars look beautiful tonight" he said to her.

"I want to share them with you forever." He continued.

Quietly, Luna slept unperturbed.

"How long has it been since thou slept at night my princess? Who now shall inherit thy mantle and walk the dreamworld as the ponies sleep?" he asked her.

Her response was silence.

"Questions for another time it seems" Julius said stroking her mane and standing vigil among the most powerful and famous ponies in Equestria.

For the first time in a long time, he felt contentment and happy.

Luna awoke, the sun shone brightly.

She found it was difficult to rise and turning to see the source of the resistance, saw Julius.

He was sitting but slumped. His talons on her wings and mane, her body in his lap, tail intertwined with hers. He slept in that position, and she understood why no one had dared wake her.

"My lady" a guard whispered.

"What…happened?" Luna asked in hushed tones.

"When you and the others succumbed to sleep, the struggle he fought with ended. He informed us the threat was over, but we stayed, nevertheless. The others have been awake for several hours, but he stayed with you all night, protecting your dreams' I believe he said or something similar. Princess Twilight ordered us not to disturb either of you and to let you wake on your own but to stand by just in case and inform you of what happened. The others expect you when you are ready. I shall report that you are both awake." The guard said bowing then leaving.

"That was the first time I have ever seen thee sleep at night, Luna." Julius said stroking her wing.

"Julius!" Luna exclaimed jumping to her feet throwing him to the ground in the process.

The dragon laughed as she pinned him beneath her.

"I have been…so worried." She cried, embracing him in her wings and front legs.

"I heard thy confession beloved." Julius said wrapping his own wings around her, tail wrapping around hers.

"Why didst thou not reply?" she looked up at him somberly.

"I could not. The fight was going ill." Julius said.

"But…it is finished?" Luna asked.

"Aye, it is. Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon are no more." He said.

"Have you come to harm?" Luna asked worried.

"Harm? No, but my magic is depleted and to say I am tired is understating my feelings. It will be a while before I am back to full strength both magically and physically, but the mare of my heart and her kin and kith are safe from ever having to deal with such atrocities again. 'tis worth a little time recovering." Julius said.

"You could have failed." Luna cuddled into his chest.

"That is always the risk Luna, but where you are concerned it is worth it." Julius said stroking her mane.

"Thou art a love struck fool…but thou art my fool. I have waited too long to express such feelings. Julius, I love thee, be mine?" Luna said.

"I have always been yours Princess of the Night." He replied.

"My Emerald Knight-Errant. Can thou forgivest me?" Luna said.

"There is nothing to forgive my princess. What is past, is past, what matters is now and the future. I would be by thy side as we once were." Julius said touching her cutie mark on her flank.

"No beloved, we are more now. It would do no good. I desire thee by my side but not as we once were, as more." Luna said.

"We have many years to catch up with; I would spend them by your side as thy husband if thou would have me?" Julius said.

"If that be truth, then ask the question my gallant fool. Thou hast already devoted thyself to me; hath given thy oath and professed thy heart." Luna joked.

Julius laughed and said "True but thou hast also confessed and professed and while not in the High Tongue as thou was fond, is that what thou desirest of me?"

It was Luna's turn to laugh and she replied "Wouldst thou ask me in Old Ponish?"

"I am so rusty I doubt you would recognize it let alone approve of a proposal, besides, how would you explain it to those who don't know it?" Julius indicated with his violet eyes they had an audience.

"Should we come back?" Applejack asked.

"Oh! How unbecoming." Luna quickly and clumsily rose off of him.

"Luna, beloved relax. They are not judging us" Julius said straightening her mane and struggling to rise himself.

Luna used her magic to assist him.

"Are you hurt Julius?" Twilight asked.

"Not in the sense you are familiar with your highness, I will need time to recover however the threats of Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon will no longer threaten Equestria; my gift to you as you start your reign." Julius bowed, if unsteadily.

"You…don't have to do that Julius. I did some light reading while you slept. If anything, it's me who should be bowing to you. You have done so much for Equestria and yet have stayed humble; there should be statues in your image for your contribution as an advisor to the Celestia and Luna." Twilight said.

"You honor me highness but I do not seek such fame or recognition. I have found what I sought; it simply took me longer to acquire it. Luna, fairest of Alicorns in Equestria, Princess of the Night. I have given thee my oath but you desired to make it official." Julius said taking a knee in front of her.

"Will you marry me?" he asked plainly in Old Ponish, opening a talon as green hue and light appeared and in it formed a simple, silver ring.

The effort pained him and all saw it.

"Julius…" Luna whispered.

"It is worth the sacrifice." The dragon replied holding the ring out to her.

"Yes…my answer is yes." Luna began to cry as her magic took the ring from his hand and placed it on her horn; she then tackled him again kissing him deep and passionate, pinning him beneath her again.

He returned it in earnest.

"Ooooh! A royal wedding! I would be absolutely delighted to attire all of you, I have such inspiration, it would be my absolute honor!" Rarity said.

"Royal wedding party in Canterlot? I'm going to need a bigger party cannon and a whole lot more confetti!" Pinkie Pie said.

"Awesome!" Rainbow Dash added.

Both Luna and Julius waved a hand in their direction acknowledging their contributions but were too interested in each other to utter words.

When they parted, Julius said "What say you love? Care to be catered to by your friends?"

"Why not?" Luna said resuming the kiss, falling on top of the dragon in a very un-princess like manner.

Celestia wiped a tear away from her eye; she was happy her sister was at long last given what she sought and was due. She may have been the elder, but Luna was definitely the stronger of them.

"Celestia?" Twilight asked.

"Yes Twilight?" she asked.

"I think we passed the test." Twilight replied looking at her cutie mark and those of her friends that shone and flashed.

"Princess…your cutie mark is flashing too." Fluttershy said.

Celestia looked at her flank and saw that indeed, her own cutie mark mirrored that of her students.

"So it is" she said with a smile.

Six months later, Julius fidgeted with the hem of his garment for the hundredth time.

"Julius, darling if you don't stop fidgeting with the hem I will never fit it into place properly" Rarity said as she finished fitting the deep purple robe around his tail.

"Sorry Rarity, I'm…nervous." Julius admitted.

"Oh of course you are; after all it's not everyday one gets married; more so when it's to a princess, even a retired one. The nerves must be unbearable. But think of Luna, she must be feeling equally as nervous especially since Celestia is her mare-of-honor, Twilight is hosting the ceremony and every pony and creature from dragons to yaks and everybeing in between is coming to Silver Shoals. The last royal wedding was for the Crystal Empire for Cadence and Shinning Armor, given everything that's happened, it's about time for some happier memories." Rarity said.

"I wonder what she will look like; resplendent as always, but with your touch Rarity, she will be ravishing. You seem to have a peculiar knack when it comes to high profile clientele." Julius said.

The white unicorn blushed and said "Thank you darling" as she finished hemming the garment.

The irritation of the garment vanished, and he looked at himself in the full-length mirror.

"Oh, darling you look radiant. Worthy of the hoof of a princess. But…there is something missing…hmm." Rarity said looking the dragon over.

"Rarity, you have outdone yourself for us both, what else could you possibly do to improve the look and feel of this outfit?" Julius said trying to find the reason for her fussing.

"Julius, my dear dragon, this is a royal wedding between two powerful and influential Equestrian beings. Perfection is not defined by simple feel alone but by look and outward appearance and most importantly, projection of station. Luna and you are over a millennium old; that is rare in and of itself. Your garb should reflect your wisdom, your grace and your considerable impact living so long has had on a country and its inhabitants. I've got it! oh Spiiiiiiiiiike!" Rarity called.

"Yes Rarity?" Spike said peaking over the second story railing of the shop they were in.

"Be a dear and fetch that circlet that is in the case up there." Rarity said.

"The one with the Alexandrite stone in the center?" Spike asked.

"That's the one" Rarity confirmed.

Spike found the object and floated down on his wings handing the crown to her.

Rarity took it with her magic and said "Thank you Spikey wikey" and kissed his cheek as she set the item on Julius' brow.

Spike blushed as the unicorn planted the kiss.

It made him look regal and the fit was perfect: over and down around his horns, which he kept trimmed as a matter of practice, to sit snug on his forehead. The stone seemed to change colors in the light.

"Alexandrite is exceedingly rare in Equestria but common in other places. The gems' color changes depending on the light and for you darling it is a perfect addition." Rarity sighed content in her work. She had matched it perfectly.

Julius had to agree, the gold circlet with the color changing gemstone indeed improved his raiment making him look like the royal he was about to become. Draping his wings over his shoulders, it made him look even more impressive.

"Wow! You look like a king Julius" Spike said.

"You both honor me beyond words, I am certain Luna will be equally impressed. You had best get over there Rarity, no doubt she will be nervous and fussy and getting her into whatever garment you've made will probably be a far more difficult task than matching my outfit." Julius said.

"Mm you're right; hers will be more trying than yours but I could use Spike's help if you can spare him." Rarity said.

"Of course, don't worry Spike, you're still my best dragon, can't ask for better than Spike the Great, hero of the Crystal Kingdom." Julius fist-bumped the smaller dragon who beamed with pride.

"I'll go and check on the others to ensure their preparations are going well. I'll store this until it's time; thank you Rarity." Julius said disrobing.

"Of course darling, of course. Come along Spikey wikey." Rarity said gathering her materials and trotting out of the small house she had requisitioned for the duration of the ceremony.

"Luna, you must be still otherwise this will never fit properly." Celestia said trying to calm her sister who paced back and forth.

"I am sorry, I'm just so…nervous. I wish everything to be perfect and can't help but worry. Is this too much? Should I forego the veil? Or…should the train be shorter? What if my horn gets caught when he places the ring? What if I trip walking down the aisle?" Luna said as she ceased her pacing while Celestia, Twilight and several other ponies helped adjust the white, velvet dress that completely contrasted her dark tones.

"All will be well sister, Julius will be impressed even if you were to wear nothing but a potato sack." Celestia replied.

"Rarity might disagree with that" Twilight said.

"Ohh, I hope she arrives soon, while I am used to being…eh, royal in many matters, dressing such is something I am not familiar or accustomed. I feel like a pack mule." Luna said.

"You look absolutely radiant Luna; Rarity really out did herself with this one" Twilight said.

Looking at herself in the full-length mirror, Luna saw the white dress and veil that covered her entire body but allowed for her wings, cutie mark, tail, mane, horn and hooves to move freely.

She looked every bit as regal as a princess could.

Rarity arrived just as she was admiring herself.

"Rarity, thank goodness." Celestia said.

"Oh Luna, you look absolutely ravishing" Rarity said entering.

"You think so? It isn't too much?" Luna asked.

"Are you uncomfortable?" Rarity asked.

"It feels…heavy" Luna said.

"Oh goodness! Why didn't you say something? Come now, you must be comfortable on your special day and we have ample time to make changes." Rarity said.

"But all of your hard work; I do not wish it to be a waste." Luna said.

"Nonsense princess; this is your dress on your day, you are anxious; nervous. I'm all for pain is beauty but not like that. Come now, we can make something that will be royal, grand and far more comfortable for you." Rarity said beginning to hem the garment.

Julius walked along the dock that lead out to the tributary that lead to the sea where Applejack, Big Mcintosh, Apple Bloom, and Granny Smith were working with Princess Sky Star and Queen Novo in their seapony form and several of her own retainers floated barrels and crates of various apple creations to a lift that Big Mac pulled up to the dock where the others loaded them onto wagons.

"Julius!" Apple Bloom exclaimed.

"Hello Apple Bloom. AJ, Granny, Big Mac. Turning to the seaponies, he bowed and said Princess Sky Star, Queen Novo. Thank you all for coming and for your assistance.

"Oh Julius, you don't need to bow to us, we are friends!" Sky Star said jumping up out of the water hugging him and nearly pulling him in.

"Forced habit highness." He replied scooping up Apple Bloom in one arm and returning the wet hug to Sky Star in the other.

"Well, I for one appreciate the decorum; it's been a long time hunny since the old ways were respected." Queen Novo said.

"Mooother!" Sky Star chastised.

"I'm kidding; it is nice to see this part of Equestria, it's been a long time since I swam these waters and I've forgotten how beautiful they are this time of year" Queen Novo said.

"Is there anything I can do to assist?" Julian said.

"Nope" Big Mac replied.

"Big Mac is right, you shouldn't be working on your weddin' day." Applejack added.

"Besides, floatin' apples down the river like logs save a whole bunch of time and energy. At this rate, we'll have all the apple fixin's here and ready before midday." She continued.

"Thank you Applejack, I know Luna would be happy to hear that things are well in hand; poor thing is probably anxious as all get out." Julius said.

"Well of course. Y'all just found each other again after a thousand years and it's only now you've been able to act on your feelings. I couldn't imagine having to put all that aside for duty; being a princess doesn't sound all it's cracked up to be." Apple Bloom said.

"You have to understand young one that in the time Luna and I were in, standards were different. It has changed and evolved and nowadays it is much more incorporating than it was back then." Julius said releasing both ponies.

"He's right, now anyone can talk to a princess or a queen without fear of repercussion. It never used to be that way." Sky Star said.

"Seemed like a whole lotta work to maintain." Apple Bloom said.

"Ee-yup" Big Mac said as Applejack loaded the last of the crates onto a wagon.

"Why don't you take the groom to be and see what the other Cutie Mark Crusaders have found for a flower arrangement?" Granny Smith said.

"What a great idea! C'mon. Scootaloo and Sweetie Bell went to the other side of those hills with Gabby." Apple Bloom said pointing with her hoof to a close by knoll. Then took off at a dead gallop.

Julius laughed and said "Thank you Granny Smith and all you Apples and Hippogryphs, this will hopefully be the happiest day Luna has had for a long time to come."

"Now you get going youngin' plenty to do before the weddin'" Granny Smith said.

"Granny, he's older than all of us combined!" Applejack said.

"Eh, what's that? He's got somethin' in his eye?" Granny Smith replied.

Applejack smacked a hoof to her forehead in disbelief.

The others laughed.

Julius once again bowed to Queen Novo who winked at him appreciating the gesture before spreading his wings saying "Thank you." then leapt into the air.

He alighted on the hill Apple Bloom had indicated at the same moment the small filly did.

Arrayed before him were all the members of the Cutie Mark Crusaders but also all of Twilight Sparkle's students from her school.

They were in a large pile of carefully arranged flowers and were in the process of making decorations with them.

Everything from long banners to necklaces and wreaths; the multitudes of colorful adornment were amazing.

"Yona like pretty pony flowers. Yaks no have flowers like this in Yakyakistan." The young yak said as Julius approached.

"Julius!" Sweetie Bell exclaimed as they all stopped their tasks to greet him.

Julius was glad that in the very short time since his return to the public life he had been able to make friends with nearly everyone Twilight and her friends knew or helped.

Julius was quickly surrounded by the group.

"Greetings younglings. I thought I might stop by and see if I could help in some way for a time." Julius replied taking a seat among them.

"Tell us another story of you and Luna" Gallus said.

"Yeah, of one of your adventures with her" Gabby added.

"Of a battle you fought, a great warrior like you must have plenty of action-packed tales" Ember said.

"Or wisdom. You were advisor to Luna and Celestia, you must have had some problem you had to work through worthy of a tale" Ocellus said with a smile.

"Tell us about your devotion to the princess, those were different times, how did you keep it all a secret from everyone?" Sandbar asked.

"Wait, you kept your love a secret?" Silverstream asked confused.

"Alright, alright, peace younglings, peace. I will give you the tale you seek." Julius said.

And for the next hour, he regaled them as they worked to make the decorations; barely interrupting but entranced nevertheless.

When he finished, they all had wanderlust and glee on their faces.

Julius couldn't help but be happy as their young faces, even non-ponies, could enjoy the magic of a good story.

Suddenly overhead, the screech of fast-flying objects was heard.

Looking up, they all saw Rainbow Dash and the Wonderbolts running maneuvers overhead.

"Thank you all for your help, Luna will love the decorations. Excuse me younglings, I have to catch up with them before I lose the chance." Julius said rising and then walking a ways off so his take off did not disturb the flowers.

Julius was not as fast flying as a Pegasus or Alicorn and so to catch up he used his magic to augment his ascent.

Joining their formation without disrupting their training, Julius still took them by surprise.

"Whoa! Rainbow Dash, you never told me a dragon could keep up with Pegasi" Spitfire said.

"I didn't know they could!" Rainbow dash replied.

"Pardon me ladies and gentlecolts; I hope I'm not interrupting." Julius said.

"How are you flying as fast as us?" Soarin asked.

"Magic; practice. I saw you all fly overhead and just wanted to check in; is there anything I can do to help?" Julius asked.

"Help? I don't think you can. We were just running through the routine for the wedding" Rainbow Dash said.

"Let's hope this one is better than the coronation. That…wasn't the best display we can do." Spitfire said.

"I would suggest we bury that memory and keep it far away from Twilight." Julius replied.

Suddenly, Julius saw something coming up from the ground at a high rate of speed directly at them.

"Scatter!" he called.

"What?" Dash and Spitfire said simultaneously not moving out of the way.

Grabbing both of them in a talon each, Julius spun almost in the opposite direction in a spiral, up and away from the incoming projectile, dropping down at the last second to be far below where it would have struck. The rest of the Wonderbolts took off in different directions.

The projectile exploded a dozen yards away from them, the sound was deafening but it was clear that it was a firework.

"Whoa…that was a cool move" Spitfire said in an uncharacteristic display of impressed.

Julius let them go when he saw the danger to have passed.

"Is anyone hurt? Spitfire?" Julius asked looking down at her, a twinkle in her eye as she shook her head as the rest of the Wonderbolts returned to the group.

"But who launched a firework at us?" Rainbow Dash asked.

"Not certain, but there's got to be a reason. Spitfire, may I borrow Rainbow Dash for a few minutes?" Julius asked

"When you fly like, you can borrow me…I mean Dash anytime" Spitfire said completely out of character.

"Uh…Spitfire? You okay?" Silver Zoom asked.

"Never better" Spitfire sighed as Rainbow Dash and Julius dove to the ground.

"That was…Awesome! You never told me you had moves like that!" Rainbow Dash said as the glided downward.

"It's not something I do lightly or advertise Dash; we were in real danger and I simply acted. Are you hurt at all?" Julius replied.

"Are you kidding? That was amazing! And I've never seen Spitfire surprised like that, I think you gained a fan." Dash replied pointing back up at the love-struck mare.

"It's a passing fancy Rainbow Dash; she'll find a pony that can give her the same thrill without putting her life at risk. What I want to know is who or what launched a firework that high." Julius said.

Getting closer to the ground, Rainbow Dash and Julius saw Pinkie Pie amidst mountains of ingredients and confectionary delights in various stages of completion.

Mr. and Mrs. Cake were present with their children assisting Pinkie Pie in the effort of baking the items in a large, clay kiln in the outdoor kitchen of the local bakery. Several other ponies Julius did not know were present and he guessed they were the proprietors of the bakery itself.

"Hello Pinkie, Mr. Cake, Mrs. Cake. Gentle ponies." Julius said to the group as he and Dash alighted on the ground.

"Oh hello there dear" Mrs. Cake said kindly.

"Hey there" Mr. Cake replied.

Pinkie however was literally hip deep in her party cannon.

Tapping the barrel with a hoof, Rainbow Dash said "Pinkie, what are you doing in there?"

Popping her head out Pinkie Pie said "Oh! Hey Rainbow Dash, Julius. I was trying out a new way to make fireworks not too close to the celebrations, after the coronation disaster with them, I thought if I launched them out of the party cannon they would be higher and farther away but still visible to everyone making it the best colorful explosion EVER! I thought I'd try it with one first then see what a whole bunch would do, but in the cannon the fireworks aren't as predictable."

"We know; it nearly hit us" Dash said.

"Oh! I'm so sorry; is everypony alright?" Pinkie Pie asked.

"We are fine Pinkie; but if I may suggest, firing the fireworks as they were intended is probably the safest option, but I know I speak for Luna when I say she and I appreciate the effort to make it spectacular and I know you will find another way to make it unique and memorable without it being so…dangerous." Julius said.

"Don't you worry; I've got plenty of ideas to make this special day even more special; the most specially, special specialist special day in the history of special days!" Pinkie Pie exclaimed.

Julius laughed and said "Thank you very much Pinkie; I trust your intuition in that."

"Got to get back, we still need to refine somethings before the performance." Rainbow dash said.

"Thanks Dash and let Spitfire know I'll sign her autograph after the ceremony if she is still starstruck." Julius said as he bumped a fisted talon against Dash's hoof.

"Don't let her hear you say that, she might never leave you alone." Dash replied.

"Don't worry Dash, you're still my number one Wonderbolt" Julius said.

"WHOO HOO! You hear that!? I'm Julius' Number one Wonderbolt! Oh yeah! I'm the best, oh yeah!" Rainbow Dash cheered as she took off in a flash.

Julius could not help but chuckle as she took off admiring herself.

"Um…Excuse me, Councilor?" one of the unfamiliar ponies asked walking up to him.

"That is not my title any longer, you may simply call me Julius. How may I assist you…?" Julius let the statement hang because he did not know the pony's name.

"Sweet Tart. My name is Sweet Tart. I take a lot of pride in my work, but never have I've had the honor of my little bake shop hosting something so spectacular as the marriage of Princess Luna. I…had hoped to make certain that her favorite confection was up to the standards that not only she desired but that I pride myself. I…know it's against tradition to see the bride before the ceremony but this means a lot for my shop and for me personally." Sweet Tart said.

Julius was pleased to know that, even after a millennium, the presence of those in positions of esteem were still sources of pride and devotion to a craft that they desired to show off their hard work and impress those in that position.

Doing so not only brought happiness to the person if they were successful, but also prestige and business to their operation.

Julius saw Fluttershy in the field adjacent to the bakery which faced it.

She was surrounded by all manner of creatures that were seated on logs, rocks and stands of all types.

"I may have a solution for you Sweet Tart. Give me one moment to see if I can pull it off" Julius winked at the pony who blushed but smiled and nodded.

Going to Fluttershy, Julius was very careful not to disturb or surprise the various creatures she worked with.

He waited patiently until the set they were practicing was completed.

"Oh, Julius. I didn't realize you were watching." She said when she finally noticed him.

"It's alright Fluttershy, your troupe sounds amazing, thank you for organizing it." he said.

"Oh, it's really no trouble at all. Royal Weddings are few and far between, I know Angel Bunny has always wanted to be in one." Fluttershy said rubbing her pet's chin making the bunny thump a foot in happiness.

"Is there something else I can help you with Julius?" she asked.

"Actually I believe there is Fluttershy, but I don't want to interrupt you if you are in the middle of important preparations; my favor will only take a few minutes if you can spare them." Julius held up his talons.

"It's not a problem, it was time for a break anyway, take five everyone!" Fluttershy said and the animals dispersed.

"So, what favor can I help you with?" she asked the dragon.

"It's Luna. She is probably terribly stressed out about everything; nerves and all and the groom isn't allowed to see the bride until the ceremony so I can't comfort her in the way I know will help. That said, our hosts at the bakery seek her approval on her favorite confection. I was wondering if you could deliver it to her, get her reaction but also be supportive to her, offer some comforting words or reassurance. Food is often Luna's go-to when she is feeling stressed or sad; this will perk her up a bit and will be a big thank you to our hosts. What do you say, can I ask this of you?" Julius said.

"Oh of course! I'd be happy to! Don't you worry, I'll see to it she's right as rain." Fluttershy said.

"Thank you Fluttershy, it means a lot to me to see Luna happy. She's had quite enough sadness in her long life." Julius said.

"I agree and it's wonderful that she has someone like you in her life. Your devotion to her is incredible and you were made for each other." She replied.

"That is very sweet of you Fluttershy, thank you" Julius said as they walked back over to the bakery.

In short order, Fluttershy was carefully carrying a piece of dark elderberry cake with blueberry frosting to the building where Luna was being fitted for her dress.

Julius meanwhile took a seat on one of the stumps and rested for a moment enjoying the sun shine of midday.

After a brief moment, he felt something tug at his tail.

It was a familiar tug, magical, innocent.

"I know that playful tap anywhere. Where's my little friend Flurry Heart?" he said turning and finding the small Alicorn.

"There she is. My you are growing up so big little one!" he picked up the babbling and cooing filly that giggled as he held her aloft. She had grown a bit since he had last seen her.

In his visit to the Crystal Kingdom to not only see what had changed in a thousand years but to also pay his respects and offer his services to the rulers and the Crystal Heart, the baby Alicorn had grown immediately fond of the much older dragon.

Julius likewise had taken a shine to the child and over the next few months he visited whenever he could, something her parents were more than happy about.

Turning, he saw they trotting up to the stump, side by side.

Holding Flurry Heart in one talon gently, he bowed at the waist saying "Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, Prince Shining Armor, thank you both for coming"

"There you are squirt" Shining Armor said finding his daughter.

"She has become more adventurous thanks to you Julius, but please, you are family now, there is no need to bow to us and it's Cadance to you." Cadance replied.

"'Tis a forced habit my lady; one which will be difficult to break I'm afraid but I will try. Flurry Heart decided to find her friend amidst the throng. What are you feeding her? She's doubled in size since we last saw each other!" Julius said handing her to her sire.

The three of them laughed good natured as they spent some time catching up.

A knock at the door brought Rarity, Celestia, Twilight and Luna out of their reverie.

"Who comes?" Luna asked.

"Um, it's me, Fluttershy" the voice replied.

Twilight opened the door and Fluttershy nearly dropped the plate of pie.

Using her magic, Twilight caught it.

"Thanks" Fluttershy said.

"What brings you here Fluttershy?" Celestia asked as Rarity helped Luna remove her re-tailored dress so she could work on the finer details.

"Julius thought Luna could use some encouragement and believes that she was anxious and nervous. He even sent me with her favorite dessert to try as a way to help settle her nerves." Fluttershy said.

Luna's expression softened and she said "That sounds exactly like something he would do. He knows me even better than I know myself sometimes." As she took the plate with her own magic.

"So, how are you feeling?" Fluttershy asked.

"Exactly as he described. I never realized marriage could be so…stressful but he would say we must trust in our friends and their specialties to make it personal and unique and not to let things we have entrusted control over to others worry us much for the control is no longer ours to have." Luna said taking a bite of the pie inching away from her sister's hungry gaze.

The cake was so stunning that Luna momentarily forgot her melancholy.

"This is…exquisite. I have never tasted something so rich and decadent before!" She exclaimed eating with more gusto.

Her gaze shifted to a window where she saw her husband-to-be playing with Flurry Heart and talking with Cadance and Shining Armor in the distance.

She smiled upon seeing him even though he could not do likewise.

"He knows me" she sighed content.

"You two were made for each other. It's okay to be nervous or a bit stressed, special days like this don't happen very often and we all want it to be perfect when they do." Fluttershy said.

"That is very reassuring sister." Celestia said.

"Celestia is right Luna; it's been a hard struggle, and you deserve to be happy. Julius is a wise and devoted dragon. I've never seen loyalty like his and maybe that's because things were different a thousand years ago but the friendship and love you have for each other is very evident, just like another dragon I know." Twilight said looking at Spike who was more interested in Rarity working than anything else.

Luna chuckled and said "Thank you; all of you. I am glad to have such understanding creatures in my life…mmm, this cake is delicious. I approve." Luna said, her attention returned to the slice she was a little sad to have consumed so quickly.

"Wait is that Cadance? And Shining Armor?" Twilight said looking out the window.

"I believe it is. Wait, Fluttershy, did Julius say anything about the baker of this cake?" Luna said.

"Oh no, but the pony who made it was blushing all over when I took the slice." Fluttershy replied.

Luna began to chuckle then laugh full throated until she was rolling on the floor, tears pouring from her eyes.

"Luna?" Fluttershy asked. "Are you okay?"

"Oh…yes, yes of course, sorry but I know Julius as well. No doubt the baker asked for a test of this confection, notably seeking my approval. Julius, adhering to tradition of not seeing a bride before the wedding itself, decided to…oh what is the phrase he would use…? 'strike two targets with one cast stone?' the phrasing it not important but he sought to cheer me up with my favorite dessert and give the baker the approval he needed from a royal. He sent you Fluttershy to aid in cheering me up because he could not be present and as the embodiment of the Element of Kindness the choice was well thought out." Luna sighed, enamored, resting against the window sill.

"Twilight, why don't you go with Fluttershy and deliver Luna's reaction to the baker; you're a princess and your word would carry a lot of weight plus, I'm certain your brother and his family would be happy to see you afterwards and you can let Julius know Luna's state of mind." Rarity suggested.

"That's a wonderful idea Rarity! Luna, are you alright with that?" Twilight asked.

"Hmm? Oh yes, yes of course." She replied still lost in her daydream, smiling out the window.

"It's fine Twilight, Rarity and I can handle things here for awhile." Celestia said.

Together, Twilight and Fluttershy made their way back to the bakery.

"Twilight Sparkle, this is Sweet Tart." Fluttershy said to the bashful pony.

"Oh my, Princess Twilight Sparkle, it's such an honor." Sweet Tart said.

"The pleasure is all mine Sweet Tart. I come on Luna's behalf as she is busy with her preparations. She states and I quote 'This cake is exquisite, I've never tasted anything so rich and decadent before'" Twilight said.

Sweet Tart nearly fainted; but managed to stay upright, if unsteadily.

"ohhhh princess, that means the entire world to me; thank you so much and you too Ms. Fluttershy. Please, give my warmest regards to her highness and thank you for taking some of your precious time for little old me." Sweet Tart bowed low to Twilight.

"You are quite welcome. I'll send Julius over as it was his idea; he should share in your accomplishment." Twilight said.

"Absolutely Princess; I heartily agree." Sweet Tart said.

As Fluttershy and Twilight left the bakery and headed to the field, it was Cadance who spotted them.

"Twilight! Fluttershy!" she exclaimed rising and trotting up to them.

Twilight rushed over to meet her sister-in-law and together they did as they had done ever since Cadance was Twilight's foal sitter and sung ""Sunshine, sunshine, ladybugs awake! Clap your hooves and do a little shake!" ending with them giggling and hugging each other.

"Twilight Sparkle" Flurry Heart said clearly catching everyone in the area completely off guard and looking in her direction.

Julius broke the silence with a laugh and asked her sire "May I?"

Shining Armor slowly handed his charge to the dragon who in turn walked the little Alicorn to her aunt.

"Not 'momma', not 'dada', who is this?" Julius said holding her up in front of Twilight.

"Twilight, Twilight!" Flurry Heart giggled.

"Congratulations Twilight. Your niece's first words are the name of the Princess of Friendship." Julius handed her over to Twilight who, like Cadance, was struggling to hold back tears of joy.

"Oh Twili, this is amazing!" Shining Armor said coming to his senses as the three of them began to fawn over the baby.

"Fluttershy" Julius said pulling her aside.

"Yes, Julius?" the bashful pony said.

"Thank you so much for helping. How was Luna?" he asked.

"Just like you said but in better spirits now. She really liked the cake and Sweet Tart was really grateful for the feedback. When we left she seemed far away, though she was watching you through the window." She replied.

Julius resisted the urge to look in that direction.

"I'm glad; again thank you for your help; it makes me feel a bit better she isn't moping or so stressed that she isn't making choices." Julius said.

"It was my pleasure, but I should get back to orchestrating the music for this evening's ceremony." Fluttershy said.

"Wait, one moment" Julius said as he took a single talon and traced a design into a nearby boulder.

The design glowed briefly and faintly then a gemstone, gold in color to match Fluttershy's coat the size of an apple.

"A thank you for a favor asked." He held it to her.

"Oh, I couldn't Julius, for such a small favor and even for a big favor, you're a friend." Fluttershy said not taking the jewel.

"I had to try; I'm old Fluttershy. I know I don't look it, but I feel it." Julius said arching his back with an audible 'pop'.

"As such, I'm old school in a lot of my mannerisms. I believe in paying debts owed, even to friends, it's a sense of equality and appreciation. To reject it is an insult or it was; how times have changed." Julius said.

"Oh my, I certainly don't want to insult you. If it means that much, I'll take the jewel." Fluttershy said.

"Oh, Fluttershy no, no, please don't feel obligated. My ways are old and they may not be commonplace in this time. If you do not desire reward because you feel doing the right thing for a friend is payment enough, I most certainly can respect that. If anything, that is a better way because it shows loyalty and that you value something more than a tangible object. That is worth every gem in the earth." Julius said popping the yellow gem into his mouth, chewing twice and the jewel was gone.

"You are very wise Julius." She said.

"Wisdom comes from experience; experience comes from making mistakes and a lot of them young one. You may be soft spoken Fluttershy, but you have wisdom and a discipline uniquely yours to be the kindest pony in Equestria. I feel as if it will never be matched in your lifetime. Don't ever sell yourself short Fluttershy; any pony that can reform and befriend a creature like Discord is a force to be respected. Thank you again for your help." Julius said as he walked back to the bakery and Sweet Tart.

Fluttershy simply blushed in acknowledgment.

At the bakery, Pinkie Pie was finishing decorating a batch of cupcakes while the Cake family and Sweet Tart and her assistants worked on other projects.

"Sweet Tart?" Julius called.

"Oh, Julius. Twilight said she would be sending you over. Luna was apparently over the moon, no pun intended, about the cake. Twilight told me what she said verbatim and I could not be more happy. Thank you for that; it means more than I can express that Princess Luna believes my elderberry cake with blueberry frosting is the best she's ever tasted. I will need to think of a name for it; something that stands out; it will be the talk of the town for a long time to come." Sweet Tart said.

"What about 'Princess of the Night Cake'?" Julius offered.

"What about 'Princess-Luna's-Favorite-Cake-In-All-Of-Equestria-FOREVER!'" Pinkie Pie said.

"Luna's Dream Cake" Mr. Cake offered.

"Nightmare Cure Cake" Mrs. Cake said.

"Oh my those are all such creative names…I'm not sure which to choose." Sweet Tart said.

"Why not make it a contest then? During the celebration, have lots in front of the cake with a list of names. Creatures cast their lot for the name they like and at the end, the one with the most wins and that is the name of the dessert." Julius offered.

"Not a bad idea. Here's another one; how about we let Princess Luna decide on a name; Sweet Tart makes a list of the names that sound good and Luna picks her favorite!" Pinkie Pie said.

"Pinkie, you're a genius!" Sweet Tart exclaimed.

"That's a great idea Pinkie Pie and we've already got a list started with all of our suggestions." Julius said.

"I'll get right on that! oh this will be so amazing!" Sweet Tart trotted in place excitedly then scampered off inside.

"Thank you Pinkie and you as well Mr. and Mrs. Cake. Luna's wedding is in good hooves with you three." Julius said.

"It's not just her wedding dear, it's yours too don't ya know." Mrs. Cake said.

"That's right, you have a say as well." Mr. Cake added.

"Luna's happiness is what is important to me. I know her well enough to be fairly accurate at what that might entail." Julius said.

"Surely dear there is more to that then blind devotion. You must have wants and desires apart from Luna, right?" Mrs. Cake asked.

Julius smiled.

"No. Luna is everything to me." He said.

"Why?" she asked.

"Perhaps it's the times, maybe it's our age or some other type of magic. Let me ask you: making cake, can you see yourself doing anything else as a job? A career?" Julius asked.

"Well…no, not really." Mrs. Cake replied.

"The same is for me when it comes to Luna except far deeper. I love her and have with every fiber of my being ever since we knew each other. I met her when we were just teenagers and from the start, she was always Celestia's shadow; the dichotomy of heir and spare was always present but was solidified when she received her cutie mark. In those times, one could not simply express their love for a Princess. There were duties to perform, appearances to upkeep. That made it even harder for her; always performing her royal duties alone, at night, no audience or subjects to speak with save in their dreams; no dignitaries, nobles or decrees to even have an inkling of socialization. I gave up many a nights sleep just so she could have someone to talk to and not be so alone in everypony's dream. Heh, I can recall me showing up with three other ponies I paid to stay awake just so she could have a tea party under the stars. What started as a way to teach blossomed into something no one could predict." Julius reminisced.

"What do you mean?" Mr. Cake asked.

"I was sent to Canterlot as a student; to learn the ways of the royals for I was a dragon that had been raised by ponies; unique in that aspect. It was deemed I could fit in better if I understood higher society as a way to curb the more…less favorable aspects of my species. As a dragon and not a pony and as a guest of their majesties, it was only fitting I be paired with Luna as Celestia was learning the pressures of being a leader and did not need to be burdened with an ignorant dragon where Luna did not have those responsibilities and so was able to devote more time to such lessons. We grew fond of each other and that continued into our adult years. I studied nearly every book in the library, observed court and diplomacy and many other topics besides. I began to council Luna on matters of state which in turn made it's way to Celestia as she was coming into her own. To say the sisters valued my input was an understatement. I guess I was just good at giving advice to new rulers. Oh yes, there was plenty of opposition in those times, a dragon counseling alicorns was simply ludicrous. And while they did not follow every piece I offered, they did consider it when it was. Things got…complicated when Luna succumbed to her hatred, resentment and longing becoming Nightmare Moon. Still, these are in the past and everything has worked out for the better. While I have been idle, I have not been ignorant of the world and it's changes. Luna has had more time experiencing the changes while I have not. There is much to learn still and I'm glad I can share it now, openly, with the creature I consider my best friend and love without condition whom I thought I lost." Julius waxed poetic.

"Aww that's so sweet. Is that the oath you will tell her at the ceremony?" Twilight's voice said from behind as she and her family came up.

Instinctively, Julius bowed.

"Gah" he said before anyone could correct him, straightening.

"See? Habits. Apologies highnesses." He replied.

A round of laughter ensued.

"There is nothing wrong with showing respect" Shining Armor said as a joke.

"True enough. Princess Twilight, is there anything else I can do to help Luna presently?" Julius asked.

"Apart from fast forwarding time, she's daydreaming about you. She's looking out the window right now." Twilight said trying to get him to look.

Julius remained stoic and smiled.

"Face it Twili, you'll have to work harder to fool someone like him." Shining Armor said.

"I'm certain things will be fine; Julius, thank you so much. In the time since we've known you, you've become a bigger part of our family. Your wisdom and experience are something the Crystal Empire treasures, but your presence with Flurry is something I personally enjoy. When she is old enough, I know she will want to learn from you, and I think I speak for Shining Armor, we would love to have you as an advisor to us and tutor to her if you are available." Cadance said.

"She just wants a strong, positive influence for Flurry." Shining Armor said.

"She is in good company. While I appreciate that offer Princess Cadance, with respect, you don't need me. You already have a strong, positive and smart tutor for Flurry Heart plus, she runs a school and a successfully unaccredited one at that in addition to being the leader of Equestria. Me? I'm an old, out of touch fire breather that just happens to be in love with the previous ruler." Julius said going to Twilight and putting a hand on her shoulder.

Twilight blushed.

"Julius…shucks." She said.

"I'll always be around however if you have a problem that you need help with, I just no longer want to be front and center; it's time to pass that torch. And if Flurry Heart ever wants to explore more, I suppose I could convince Luna and Celestia that a trip to the Crystal Empire every so often for a visit would be a nice change of pace and I'm certain they'd love to see their nieces." Julius said.

Candace and Twilight hugged him with their wings and a foreleg each. Shining Armor joined in with Flurry Heart completing the hug.

"I'll see you all at the ceremony, Twilight, thank you for agreeing to officiate. If I can help at all, I won't be far, please let Luna know I love her and look forward to seeing her radiance again soon." Julius returned the hug then extracted himself and leapt into the air and flew across the small coastal town.

Just outside the town proper, Julius saw a figure he had not seen in a long time.

Landing just ahead of her, the plain cloak she wore over herself kept the sun and dust off of her, but it was clear she was carrying a great load.

"Good day Zecora, you look ladened, may I assist you in any capacity?" Julius asked the zebra.

Zecora stopped and pulled back her hood.

"Long have I travelled for a wedding to find, whom shall I encounter but the groom both generous and kind." She replied with a smile.

"May I take something to carry for you?" Julius asked.

"Strong, wise and kind my load for you to bear, but tell me, why are you not with your mare?" Zecora asked.

"Luna is still getting ready and it is tradition that the bride and groom not see each other on the day of their wedding." Julius replied taking the heavy saddlebags that clinked and clanked with glass bottles and vials. They were surprisingly hefty.

"Tell me, where are you bound my lady?" Julius said gently hoisting the saddlebags over his shoulders.

Zecora chuckled and said "You are most kind, but a lady I am not; to Luna's side to aide in her readiness I am begot."

Julius stopped mid-step.

"Ah…I see. Might I inquire her need for your talents?" Julius said continuing to walk.

"The truth I would tell you, for concerns give rise, but if I were to do so, I would spoil her surprise. What I will say, to ally your fears, it is nothing that ails her, but to bring you cheer." Zecora said cryptically.

"A riddle to think on and pass the time, though I cannot match you in the game of rhymes." Julius said continuing to walk.

Zecora laughed full throated.

"You are eloquent, that is a fact, you back your words with your acts. Luna is lucky to have such a male; with such wit and grace it is destined to never fail." Zecora said.

"Thank you Zecora. I will try to not guess too hard at what surprise Luna and you have in store. Let me help you to the door at least, it is this way." Julius said as he lead her into town and to the place where Luna was readying herself; a small little cottage that belonged to the local tailor which made sense given everything.

Setting the saddlebags on the doorstop, Julius asked "Is there anything else I can assist you with Zecora?"

"No, but my thanks are great, to not have to carry such weight." The zebra said.

"My pleasure. I'll see you at the ceremony Zecora and thank you for making this special for Luna; if you need anything, please do not hesitate to call on me." Julius said waving as he left, Zecora doing likewise.

Luna's ears perked up hearing Julius' voice and nearly stumbling over herself as she rushed to the door only remembering the tradition as Rarity and Celestia opened the door to reveal Zecora.

"Oh, Zecora! I…well I heard raised voices and decided to investigate." Luna said standing up straightening herself in a failed attempt to look regal.

"Your husband-to-be was so very kind, to help with the burden that was mine. I fear however I may have given his curiosity rise to the thing that I mentioned was your surprise." Zecora replied as Rarity and Celestia struggled to drag the filled saddle bags inside, the zebra following suit.

"Does he know?" Luna asked.

"I do not think he knows the exact details, but as smart and clever as he is a step for the ruse to fail." Zecora said.

"Can it work?" Luna asked longing.

"Indeed it can, but the preparation is time consuming and once completed there can be no undoing." Zecora said.

"Very well. Please begin." Luna said.

"Luna? What is going on?" Celestia asked confused.

Looking at her sister with a sad, yet honest smile, Luna said "Sister; I have made many mistakes but have also atoned for many of them. There is one, however, I owe to Julius. He has kept much of his personal life secret under the guise of duty and devotion. He deserves so much and yet asks for none. What I am doing will not only repay part of the debt I owe to him, but give him a gift he has desired for so long."

"What gift would require Zecora's talents?" Rarity asked.

Luna blushed and revealed what she had planned. For over ten minutes she revealed the why, the how but most importantly, the meaning behind it.

Rarity and Celestia were speechless for several moments when she finished.

"Luna, darling…not to put too fine a point on it but, you and Julius are well over a thousand years old. Is…it wise to do this at that age?" Rarity said carefully.

"I understand why it would be a concern, but age aside, our minds and bodies are still healthy and…it is something Julius knew he could never have, especially if…if I was the one he desired, it was yet another sacrifice he gave to make me happy. He's never stopped trying to make me happy; as a princess, as a person to the point where he gave up certain things he wanted to accomplish. Oh, he's never spoken them aloud but when your councilor pays ponies to stay awake just so I could have a tea party and experience what being involved was…I don't deserve him sometimes, but this? It's a small price really besides, didn't mother and father always say I'd be first? If only they could see us now." Luna chuckled.

"Well…yes they did. This is just…unexpected." Celestia said.

"I had meant for this to be a surprise for everyone but I cannot hide it here with Zecora present. Please, tell no one else especially Julius." Luna pleaded.

"Alright, because it is important to you and because it is your wedding." Celestia replied with a hint of sarcasm.

"I find it simply wonderful to even consider. But I promise I won't tell a single ponyelse." Rarity said.

"Thank you, I do appreciate it. Now that I no longer have the duties of a princess, I can devote more time and energy to such a task and Julius mentioned some time ago that such a thing could definitely enhance my social circle. I have much to learn still and I'm eager to do so with him by my side without worrying so much about Equestria." Luna replied.

"I'm proud of you little sister." Celestia said draping her wing over Luna in a hug as Rarity began to help Zecora set up her apparatuses.

Julius flew to the small island in the middle of the bay of Silver Shoals where the picturesque home he had commissioned bringing in, Big Daddy McColt and Pinkie Pie's sister Maud as well as her boyfriend Mudbriar all for their technical and building expertise.

Big Daddy McColt had never worked on anything dealing with seawater which is where Maud and MudBriar came into play; their knowledge of stone and timber would make it far easier for Big Daddy McColt to build with.

Having lived in castles her entire life, Julius believed that Luna would prefer a more modest and less expansive dwelling but still with all the comforts of a castle.

Six months wasn't a long time and the cost had been extravagant but Julius believed it worthwhile as a wedding gift to her: a modest yet beautiful home for the two of them with room for more if they should have visitors on the picturesque island in the bay the overlooked the sea with clear views on all sides of everything. Julius had wanted to make certain that it was built strong enough to last a long time.

Big Daddy McColt had finished construction under Maud and MudBriar's careful selection of materials culminating in a rustic yet spacious and warm home.

"Maud, MudBriar. I am glad to see you but had expected you both to be readying yourselves for the ceremony. Is everything alright?" Julius asked alighting on the front porch where the two ponies were.

"Technically, the construction is fully completed and the furnishings are in. The only task left to complete is ensure it meets the expectations of the owners." MudBriar said.

"Well, since only one of them is present and the other is not aware this project happened, will my input be satisfactory?" Julius asked aware of the…different nature Maud and MudBriar exuded.

After a moment of consideration, MudBriar said "This is acceptable."

"Maud, what of you? do you have any thoughts? Concerns or questions regarding this?" Julius asked.

"No, but Boulder might. What do you think Boulder?" Maud asked her pet rock completely monotoned.

Again after a moment of seeming silence, Maud said "Boulder thinks the house is sound and ready for inspection."

"Thank you, the three of you. Is there anything I can do to repay your hard work in this endeavor?" Julius asked patiently.

"Technically you have already paid us." MudBriar said.

"This is true; but I was not referring to the business dealing we had, which is now completed in full. I ask as a friend who is grateful for your efforts beyond that of a business deal." Julius said.

"You haven't looked in the house yet to see if you like it" Maud said.

"And I am placing my trust in you both that I will without seeing it firsthand because you are my friends. Therefore I ask again, is there anything I can do to personally thank you for your hard work and dedication to craft?" Julius said.

The two ponies looked at each other with a rare look of surprise on each of their muzzles.

"Your gratitude is all that we need Councilor Julius but thank you all the same." MudBriar said.

"I am no longer a councilor MudBriar and while I appreciate the respect, you may simply call me Julius. May I hug you both?" Julius replied.

They both nodded and Julius scooped them both up in a talon each hugging them genuinely, which they returned in kind.

"If you should need anything in the future, either of you, please do not hesitate to call upon me." Julius said as the two took their leave down the long dock that lead to the mainland.

The island itself was situated so that it was protected by the bay in times of bad weather and was in shallow enough water that even flooded, the risk of damage to the house was minimal while it provided a picturesque view of the sea on one side and the town on the other.

Entering the home, Julius saw that everything from the furniture, to the doorways were plain but very well constructed and ornate in their own right. Everything was designed for both an Alicorn and a Dragon in mind, from the layout of the kitchen to the bedroom.

In short, it was perfect to live and entertain in comfort and peace.

Going into each room, Julius inspected everything and found it to be perfect.

A knock at the door brought him out of his reverie.

A royal guard dressed in Luna's raiment answered.

"Ah Julius." The armored pony said.

"Captain. It's been awhile." Julius said.

"It has sir. We have Princess Luna's affects, permission to set them up sir?" the pony asked.

"Allow me to help you" Julius said stepping up to assist but the pony stopped him.

"Sir, it is mere hours before your wedding to her majesty and she has surprisingly little in the way of personal belongings. The only thing you will be allowed to do is tell us where you want them placed then we are to get you to Ms. Rarity so you may be outfitted properly." The captain said.

"Did she order you to do that?" Julius asked.

"No sir, but Princess Celestia did. They may no longer have royal duties but they are still royalty and now so are you. With the changing of the monarch so too comes a changing of the guard. We have proudly served their majesties for a long time and are honored to continue to do so and now, you will share in that as you are to be a prince." He said.

"Captain, I ask nor seek for any special treatment or favor from my soon-to-be sister-in-law. Like you, I have faithfully served Celestia and Luna and have done so longer than any ponyelse, you included. While I did wish this home to be like the castle she grew up and lived in, I did not wish it to be a replica. You have your own families and lives to live plus another Princess that is far younger and less experienced that will need all the help she can receive. Luna has desired to fit in and be out from under her sister's brightness; to shine with her own light. I do not have Celestia's authority, but if she takes issue with what I am about to do she may come to me and we might discuss it. I am grateful your sense of duty and honor to her majesty; your desire to protect her and by extension me is appreciated; but our positions no longer warrant this. It is time for a quieter, more reflective and less opulent lifestyle. Therefore, while I will permit you and yours to deliver Luna's belongings, your next task will be to return to Celestia and inform her that while it is appreciated, the presence of guards, even ones with Luna's raiment, are…intrusive. Let her know I directed this and am willing to speak to her about it if she disagrees." Julius said.

"I understand sir, however, her majesty anticipated this and even consulted Princess Luna with this decision. In no uncertain terms are we to leave you or your dwelling. Just as in the castle. We shall be discreet and not infringe upon your privacy but we are posted here at all hours of the day and night. Princess Luna has stated if you disagree with her decision sir, she would and I quote, 'be more than willing to discuss it at the earliest opportunity. The reason for this decision will become clear later.' End quote." The captain said.

"Ah; and does her majesty know of this dwelling you are assigned?" Julius asked with a smile.

"I do not understand sir." The pony said.

"This house was constructed in secret without the princesses knowledge, not even Celestia. How did you know where to deliver Luna's belongings?" Julius asked critically.

"Sorry! Sorry that's my fault!" Thorax said overhead, flying quickly if erratically.

"King Thorax" Julius bowed.

"Oh Julius, please don't bow to me; you make me feel…unworthy." Thorax said as he landed in front of him.

"Unworthy? As the Changelings monarch? I find that difficult to fathom. Let me guess, Princess Celestia asked for a favor of the Changelings?" Julius asked.

"She did, she did. We didn't mean any harm; I was to tell you before all this arrived but I got sidetracked and was late. Celestia and Twilight want all creatures to feel welcomed in Equestria, it's been hard rebuilding the Changelings after Queen Chrysalis; a lot of Changelings, despite the transformation, still feel the urge to fight; to protect and be governed by something or someone." Thorax said as the ponies all transformed into their true form, the captain into Pharynx.

"I see. So Celestia and Luna, with Twilight I'm assuming, asked those who sought such things to join the palace guard and, as a way to slowly incorporate Changelings into the guard, your first assignments are to protect the retired monarchs and their families and since Twilight was the only one that knows about this house, that's the only reason you are all here. Am I close?" Julius said.

"More than close sir, try spot on" Pharynx said.

"Somethings just don't change; Celestia is quite clever." Julius shook his head and sighed.

"The orders we were given still stand sir." Pharynx said.

"I understand Pharynx. You may proceed in whatever form you all are comfortable in, no reason to be ponies if you don't desire to be." Julius said as several Changelings reverted back to ponies while others remained in their true form.

For the next hour, Luna's personal belongings were brought into the house with Julius doing nothing more than directing where they should set items.

It disheartened Julius to see so little in the way of personal belongings to a princess that was over a millennium old, but that was dispelled quickly when he considered that what was there was important enough to keep around and that Luna was very selective about her keepsakes. It showed maturity and that she valued memories and people over objects; a difficult mindset and lifestyle to maintain in a materialistic world of magic.

In short order, it was time to get ready.

Pharynx and another Changeling volunteered to be his escort and Julius nodded his consent.

They flew back to town and landed at the Tailor shop.

"Thank you both, please remain outside as Celestia no doubt has her guards stationed as well. I don't believe we are expecting anyone but I could be mistaken, please don't be too harsh to those who come." Julius said.

"Is…this a lesson, sir?" Pharynx asked.

"Would you like it to be?" Julius replied.

"Princess Luna said we should have an open mind when guarding you and to learn what we can. Not every dragon lives to be a millennium, your experiences would help us acclimate." He replied.

"Very well. As a guard you understand safety is important, however, not every situation needs to be treated as a threat. You are experienced Pharynx in being aggressive but not judicious in it's use. Your very presence alone can act as a deterrent; you are familiar with this?" Julius asked.

The Changelings nodded.

"Good. You should be attentive but assume that everypony is a part of your hive; your collective, as you would with Thorax and your broodmates. Do not assume they are a threat unless they give you clear cause otherwise; you will find it will be easier to do your duty and you will socialize easier than if you were simply aggressive to everypony or creature that came close. That said, this is situation dependent. As I said, I don't believe we are expecting anypony else but I could be wrong. You should question anyone who wants to enter but be professional and polite as you can about it; only be aggressive if they mean harm. Does this make sense?" Julius explained.

"It does. It is…different, but Thorax and the others have been guiding me about properly expressing my emotions. You catch more Changelings with honey than with vinegar until they give you cause to use vinegar." Pharynx replied with pride.

"Excellent. You are already ahead of the curve then. I'll be inside if you need me or have questions and thank you both for your dedication, I appreciate it." Julius said putting a talon on their shoulders.

Pharynx beamed with pride and took positions by the door as Celestia's guards trotted up and took positions next to them.

"Well done" Thorax said briefly changing back to his original form before returning to a guard pony guise.

Inside, Julius called out "Rarity? Are you here?"

Peaking her head out of a bedroom door the aforementioned pony said "Yes darling, I'll be with you in just a moment, finishing touches and all."

"I'm sure you are doing fine. Is Celestia with you, I would speak to her if she isn't too busy." Julius said.

"I'll send her out in a moment" Rarity said closing the door.

Julius draped his wings over his shoulders like a cape and sat patiently on a bench that better suited his frame.

Several minutes went by when Celestia opened and closed the door of the room quickly, stepping through so fast that even Julius had not time to see inside.

"Phew, that was insane. I don't know how Rarity has the patience to do something like fashion. She said you desired to have words with me?" she asked.

Julius rose and bowed at the waist.

"Princess Celestia. I have two matters to address regarding Luna." Julius said.

"Julius, again with the bowing? You no longer have to do that." she said approaching.

"The matters I seek to discuss warrant it my lady." Julius replied.

"Oh my, they must be serious indeed." Celestia replied sitting on her haunches when she was a foot from him.

"Speaking bluntly my lady; is it necessary for us to be under guard all the time?" Julius said coming right to the point.

"Ah you discovered my little ruse did you? Luna gave her consent saying she was taking a play out of your book; two birds, one stone. Has there been a problem?" Celestia asked.

"Not at all ma'am, but I was under the impression that Luna sought a quieter, more social life. The presence of guards, even new ones, draws attention she neither needs or wants. Am I incorrect at reading her intents? If so, please tell me and I will apologize as there is a design here that I am not privy to." Julius said.

"There is indeed a reason for the guard Julius, but it is not for me to tell. Luna shall be the one to explain her reason for it and I promise it is not without merit she does so. The guard will not be intrusive to the privacy she and you seek, of that I can promise." Celestia replied.

"Very well highness, I will trust your word that it is for a good reason." Julius replied sitting once more.

"Now, what is the second thing you wished to speak of?" Celestia asked.

"For your blessing." Julius sighed.

"My blessing? Julius you've always had my favor especially where Luna was concerned. My blessing for what?" Celestia asked confused.

"Your sister's hoof in marriage." Julius looked away shamefully.

Celestia knew precisely then what he sought.

"Still respecting the old ways. And as I am the elder and her only relative, you desire me to give her away to you in the tradition of the rulers of old thus solidifying your fealty and devotion to not only her but to the nation. Oh Julius you are worthy of such a honor and I would be happy to do so publicly. You have more than earned it for your service to us all these long years." Celestia said.

Julius took a knee in front of her.

"You honor me majesty." He said.

Cupping his chin in a hoof she said "There is no better creature in Equestria that I would rather see Luna with. You have served us both loyally, confidently and with devotion not seen in many throughout history. You have proven yourself a hundred times over in that capacity. You have always felt on the outside Julius; being a dragon that came to us in a time where tensions were high between our peoples and for the past thousand years have felt guilt about a failure that wasn't yours and fought a battle Luna and I have fought within ourselves for just as long that you didn't have to; something I will be personally grateful for and indebted to you about. I am…so proud to be able to call you kin, family, brother just as I am of Luna to call her sister." Celestia cupped his chin with a second hoof, her resolve failing, tears welling up in her eyes.

Julius understood that it was now, at this moment, that the past thousand years she had missed his presence at her and Luna's side. That she had worried and wanted to welcome him back but for one reason or another couldn't; it was the finding of a long lost friend; a reconciliation of emotions long buried; a thank you that was long overdue.

"Thank you…sister" Julius replied reaching up and hugging Celestia, tears of his own threatening to fall.

The Alicorn embraced him with hoof and wing as he did her with wing and talon. Though different creatures they were, the bond that had been formed over a millennium was now exposed in it's entirety.

They wept tears of joy for several minutes, oblivious to the world around them and it was good.

Twilight Sparkle, who had needed to stop by briefly before taking her place to officiate, witnessed the scene with the guards protecting the building, Spike riding on her back, through a window.

"Aww, their love is so deep. How hard it must have been for them to keep it restrained because of their position." the purple dragon said.

"It must have been torture" Twilight said wiping a tear away with a wing tip.

"I don't want to interrupt them." Spike said.

"We can come back later; this is important not just for rekindling of friendship but to forge a stronger, familial bond." Twilight observed.

"Just like us?" Spike asked.

Twilight chuckled and said "Yes Spike, just like us." As he hugged her neck.

Luna meanwhile, having heard it all, nearly lost her entire composure, wanted to rush out and embrace them both, half dressed and weeping.

Rarity on the other hand, also having heard everything, had to stop assisting Luna in dressing and dabbed her eyes with a handkerchief.

"You have…the most amazing romantic creature ever Luna. It is worthy of it's own novella" Rarity said.

"Yes. But come, we must continue. I love this dress and I want him to love it as well; truly some of your best work. Come, let us proceed so you may attire him." Luna said pushing through her feelings.

"Right, right." Rarity said regaining her composure and continuing to assist.

It was minutes later that Rarity swapped places with Celestia.

"Rarity? Are you alright?" Julius asked seeing the normally upbeat drama pony be somewhat down.

"Oh yes darling; I just…heard your little confession to Celestia and found it to be beautiful; it was worthy of it's own novel." She said.

"Perhaps you can write it Rarity, add best selling author to your list of accomplishments." Julius said.

"Oh Julius don't flatter me like that" Rarity giggled with tears in her eyes.

"Sorry Rarity. I did not mean to make you so emotional. So many things are coming out now and I don't believe anyone was truly ready to face them emotionally." Julius said.

"You have a good heart Julius and an old soul. If half of what I've heard is true, you and Luna deserve all the happiness in the world." Rarity said going to where she stored his garment.

"You know, Luna and I are not the only possible dragon/pony couple." Julius said.

"Please darling, this is yours and Luna's day, don't make this about any ponyelse; later." Rarity said adorning him using her magic.

"As you wish" Julius said respecting her wishes.

When he was dressed to impress, Rarity looked him over and made some fine-tuned adjustments.

"You look dashing Julius; worthy of marriage to a princess." Rarity said.

"All thanks to you Rarity; I thank you and foresee a future where your fashions extend far beyond ponies…you are truly an artist Rarity worthy of your reputation, thank you so much for doing this for Luna and I." Julius said.

"Of course, Julius, it isn't everyday one gets to dress royalty for a wedding; it's the opportunity of a lifetime." Rarity said.

I cannot wait to see what you did with Luna, I'll see you at the ceremony, alright?" Julius hugged her and she squee-ed with delight.

In the other room, Luna heard everything and hugged her sister as she did the final touches on her mane; normally flowing with magic as if in the wind, but for this it was secured in three places with silver hair pieces that looked like tear drops that wrapped around the targeted area keeping the hair from flowing freely.

Similar pieces adorned her tail.

Her hooves were covered in their traditional silver garb, her dress mirrored the color of the rest of her raiment, but this was far lighter and shorter. The veil was just long enough to cover her eyes, the train ended just after her tail, her legs and feet had more than ample room to move, the material by her cutie mark was thin enough that it was clearly visible, the rest covered her elegantly. A silver bib and corresponding crown replaced her traditional black ones; the jewelry complimented her natural coloration and she looked more regal than she could ever remember. For the first time, she felt she overshadowed her older sister and Celestia was inclined to agree.

"You look so beautiful sister; a princess of Equestria through and through and I could not be more proud of you." Celestia said wiping a tear from her eye with a wing tip.

"Thank you sister. I know…our relationship has not always been the most positive but, I believe we can thank him for trying to keep us from repeating our past mistakes." Luna said hugging Celestia as Celestia used her magic to finish applying the crown upon her sister's head.

"We can. Oh Luna, you look so radiant." Celestia mused.

"Are you…really alright with giving me away?" Luna asked.

"Do you not wish that?" Celestia asked.

"No, well, I mean yes I do desire it, but…how's your old ponish?" Luna replied.

"Is that what you're worried about?" Celestia chuckled.

"I suppose you are right; I am nervous, anxious but…thrilled. Part of me wishes it were over, another wishes it will never end. Ooooh, the anticipation is thrilling!" Luna trotted in place, jittery but with a filly-like innocence and glee.

"This is a most joyous occasion Luna and I am happy for you; happy that you have found such joy, that our family is growing, even after a thousand years, mother and father would be so proud of you, I know I am." Celestia said as the sisters embraced once more.

"We shall have to find you a suitor next" Luna joked making Celestia laugh.

"I would not be surprised if Julius were involved in that as well" she said.

"You know you are always welcome in whatever home we settle in; which…we have yet to discuss; I wonder why Julius has avoided speaking about a dwelling that isn't a castle?" Luna asked becoming introspective.

"There is much he has involved himself with in the past months; perhaps it was something he overlooked but as we know him, it will be addressed in time. I believe he wanted this day to be as special and perfect for you as he could possibly make it and so his energies were devoted to it. As he would say 'love makes people do things that run counter to logic but in the end it is never wrong.'" Celestia offered.

"He says that?" Luna asked quizzically.

"Or something similar to that effect. Come sister, let us tarry no longer, Twilight will be waiting and so will your husband-to-be." Celestia said.

Together the two sisters exited the room and then the house.

"Quit worrying Julius, you're making me nervous" Spike said adjusting his bowtie with one talon as he held the pillow with the rings in the other.

Julius paced back and forth.

The guests were arriving, the places and foodstuffs had been set, the decorations hung and the choir and instruments were tuning; Octavia Melody and DJ Pon-3 or Vinyl Scratch as she was known privately, were doing their final sound checks.

The long red carpet that lead to the arch where the ceremony would commence faced the sea and setting sun splitting the rows of guests.

Twilight, in her own princess raiment with crown included, sat on her haunches on a small box in front of the flower-covered archway watching him pace.

"Julius, you haven't forgotten anything, I'm certain of it" she said.

"I'm sorry; I'm just…I cannot wait to see her. I've waited a millennium and a day to do so and now it's really happening. I can't thank you enough Princess Twilight for officiating this. I hope it isn't too much." He replied.

"It's not and the honor is mine. This is beautiful and I know it will be spectacular." Twilight said as more and more guests arrived, the Mane Six finishing their respective preparations were dressed in some of the most beautiful gowns Rarity had designed to express their uniqueness.

Knowing what he knew of fashion, none would want to outshine the bride and just thinking about it made him giddy.

Princess Candice arrived with her family, the ponies present bowing to her in respect. She and Shining Armor were dressed immaculately, she in a beautiful pink dress, he in his dress whites with a red sash.

They acknowledged him with a nod and took their seats as he did likewise.

For what seemed like an eternity, ponies and creatures from all over arrived, paid their respects and took their seats.

When the entirety of the congregation was present, the sound of trumpets sounded silencing the crowd and making Julius' scales twitch.

Fluttershy's animal choir began to sing a bridal march and then he saw her.

Luna walked down the red carpet flanked by her sister who had dress elegantly but was no where near how Luna looked.

If his jaw could touch the ground, it would have.

Twilight closed it for him with a hoof whispering "She is gorgeous." Which in his mind was an understatement.

When he didn't move for a moment, Spike elbowed him and only then did he make a move to meet her halfway, Twilight following.

When the song ended, Twilight said in a loud voice "Who here gives away this mare to be wed?"

Celestia answered in old ponish "I, Celestia, Princess of Equestria and eldest of our line hereby give away my sister, Princess Luna of Equestria, to Julius, the dragon that has been our advisor, our friend, our companion and protector of the realm for over a thousand years. I consider him honorable, faithful, devoted and above all worthy of her hoof, my respect and blessing and have called him friend but now call him brother; brood of my brood and with this, all titles and honors of the position of Prince as his joining shall make him." her horn shining for emphasis, Spike translating for those who did not speak the language.

"I didn't know you spoke old ponish?" Julius whispered to him.

Spike simply smiled.

"Do you accept these terms Julius?" Twilight asked.

"I do" he replied as Luna walked up to him and offered him her right fore-hoof.

Taking it gently, they walked back to the archway where Twilight took her position on the small box.

"You look beyond stunning" Julius managed to whisper to Luna who smiled and stifled a giggle.

"You look most handsome" she was able to reply.

When they were at the archway, Luna and Julius faced each other, Luna switching her hoof with her wings which Julius held in his talons gently.

Luna looked the most beautiful she had ever been in his mind and it was a struggle for him to pay attention to the ceremony over her radiance.

"Welcome everypony and creature, friends from near and far. Today, we celebrate the union of Princess Luna and Julius in matrimony. Julius, what vow do you give to Princess Luna as commitment of your devotion to her?" Twilight asked.

"I have served thee as vassal, as knight, as councilor and friend for over one thousand years. In such time I have found thee to be the most beautiful of princesses in Equestria, not just in body but in heart and spirit as well. There is little I can say that would build upon the oaths I have already sworn to thee in perpetuity, but I will try." Julius said in haling and exhaling in preparation.

"Luna, fairest Princess of the Night and ruler of the realm of dreams, I hereby vow to honor thee as due thy station. To cherish, honor and love thee in times of plenty as well as in times of need; in sickness, in health and all states in between. I give myself of mind, body and soul to thee and only thee as thy husband and humble servant. Oh radiant mare of the moon, I pledge all that I have, be it plenty or poverty, to thy comforts and visions; from the sweat of my brow to the bits in my purse, they are now thine for we two are now one. As a symbol and visual sign of this promise, I seal this pact with a ring that all who seest it recognize my vow to thee." Julius said taking the larger ring from the pillow Spike held and placed it on her horn.

Luna fought back tears.

It was so genuine and moving that it was hard to do.

Celestia and Cadance however held no such reserve and were weeping openly, leaning on each other, almost to the point of disruption.

Several others were less extravagant, but displayed tears of happiness nevertheless.

"Princess Luna, what vow do you give to Julius as commitment of your devotion to him?" Twilight asked.

Luna breathed in deeply and gripped his talons tighter with her wings.

He smiled reassuring her.

"Julius. Words fail this princess now at the time when they should bolster, for there are none that can express to thee that which I feel. For over a millennium thou hast been steadfast, loyal, devoted and hath sacrificed for me and my sister in defense of us and of the realm. Because of duty, our love had to remain distant but ever present and it was only just recently we were able to explore it. I vow to thee that my heart, mind and soul are thine and thine alone. I remain steadfast thy mare; thy wife in every respect. What is mine, is thine; what I have, we share. In times of good and in times of strife, by thy side I stand. In times of sickness, in times of wellness, forever until the end, I devote myself to thee no longer as thy liege but as thy equal. I vow to honor thee as due thy station but also as thy deeds have warranted. I pledge that all that is mine, from my magic to my status, thou shalt share in it for I give it freely to thee, wisest and most radiant of dragon-kind. As a symbol and visual sign of this promise, I seal this pact with a ring that all who seest it recognize my vow to thee." Luna said using her magic to take the ring from the pillow and placed it on the middle finger of his left talon.

Rarity and Applejack wept in earnest, almost to the point of disruption.

Twilight smiled and said "Is there any who would deny these two this union? Speak now or be forever silent."

When none spoke, Twilight continued "Very well, then by the power invested in me as the Princess of Friendship and Ruler of Equestria, I pronounce you both wed." and using the magic in her horn, she enchanted the rings as Luna practically lept into his arms kissing him.

Fireworks exploded over the bay as Rainbow Dash and the Wonderbolts flew over head rising up and diving down at a high rate of speed.

When she was directly over the water, a Rain Boom exploded in a cascade of colors.

"Beautiful" Luna said as she held Julius in her wings and hooves.

"Very. But not like you" Julius said putting a talon under her chin.

They kissed again; passionately, deeply, lovingly.

The night was then filled with dancing, food and fun.

Julius shared the first dance with Luna, then with Celestia and Twilight following shortly after.

Luna likewise shared the first dance with her husband and then Shining Armor followed by Thorax then, surprisingly to them both, Gallus who blushed the whole time.

Julius eventually danced with every one of the Mane Six while Luna did likewise with nearly every visiting leader and dignitary.

During his dance with Rainbow Dash, Julius asked her if Spitfire was still head-over-hoof about earlier to which she replied that she was.

Julius then asked if Spitfire would like a dance, approaching her directly.

The mare nearly fainted at the mention, trying to come up with an excuse that she couldn't dance and had four left hooves.

Julius meanwhile said that wasn't a problem and took the chance in picking up the Wonderbolt leader and for a few minutes dancing with her in his arms so her hooves never touched the ground.

Amidst the whoots and cat-calls of her companions, Spitfire blushed terribly, but enjoyed the dance regardless.

"Um…th…thank you your highness, that was…awesome." She said when he set her down.

"Thank you for your performance Spitfire, it made the ceremony all the more special, and that goes to all of you, thank you again." Julius said to the rest of them.

When he had left; Spitfire swooned and said "I am not washing this uniform ever again. Dash…that was AWESOME!" making everyone laugh.

Eventually, Luna and Julius found each other again and they embraced, ate some food of which Celestia took her fair share of sweets, but Luna got chills upon eating her favorite confection.

"Beloved, what is the name of this cake that is so divine?" she asked him.

"That is up to you my love, Sweet Tart, is your list completed?" Julius called to the pony.

"It is. Princess Luna, first allow me to express my gratitude at your pleasure; I sought to make the best cake I could for your majesty and to hear such praise from those close to you filled me with such pride. But I did not come up with a name for the confection and at the suggestion of your friends, I came up with a list of names they and others who have sampled it believed would be appropriate but the final say is reserved for your highness. This is the list of names for the creation." Sweet Tart said placing the list in front of Luna as they sat at the table of honor.

Immediately, Luna recognized names that only her friends could come up with and chuckled as she absentmindedly ate one, two, three pieces of the cake, commenting on it's delectability.

Sweet Tart blushed crimson the whole time.

After some deliberation, Luna finally decided on a name that suited the dessert.

"Silver Shoals Dreamscape" Luna said having written her own contribution on the page and circling it.

"Oh Princess…that sounds delightful! I will add it to our menu immediately and, if you are agreeable, your endorsement?" Sweet Tart asked.

"Of course, it has my official endorsement." Luna said cuddling into Julius.

There was much cheering and Sweet Tart nearly stumbled over herself with joy as she made her way back to her bakery.

Meanwhile, Spike bashfully dug a toe into the dirt as he and Rarity shared a moment.

"Why Spikey-wikey, whatever is the matter?" she asked him.

"Um, Rarity, you uh, you know I've uh—" Spike stammered and swallowed hard. "—you know I've uh, had a crush on you for a while now and, well, something Julius said earlier kind of struck me a little bit. I, uh wanted to share those thoughts with you because I consider you a friend and feel it's necessary, especially since now I'm Twilight's Friendship Ambassador." He mumbled.

Rarity scooted in closer to him and said very dramatically "Yes Spikey-Wikey?"

Spike blushed even more and said "Well, I um, that is, I uh…"

Rarity got even closer until she was practically rubbing shoulders with him.

"Come now Spike, what is it you are trying to tell me?" Rarity said.

"WOULD YOU BE MY SPECIAL SOMEPONY!" Spike blurted out far louder than he wanted to and instantly clapped his hands over his muzzle as several others looked on in surprise but then moved on.

Rarity was taken aback but she wasn't surprised. It was no secret Spike liked her as more than just a friend and to be honest, she was fond of him as well.

"It's about time you asked" she said kissing his cheek.

"That was a yes, by the way." Rarity said as the purple dragon turned red this time in adoration and not in embarrassment.

The party lasted deep into the night until at long last the festivities ended and everyone went their separate ways.

"Um, beloved, where are we to rest?" Luna asked.

"This way." Julius said leading her towards the bay.

"Are we to rest on the beach? It sounds romantic on a night like this." Luna said.

"What if I gave you the beach my love?" Julius replied cryptically.

"You are not serious?" Luna said.

"Well, not directly at any rate. But…" Julius said indicating the little island in the bay with the house.

Seeing it, Luna's mouth nearly hit the ground.

"I had some help and while it's not a castle, it does come with a few creature comforts." Julius said as Pharynx flew in their direction and alighted on the dock in front of them, bowing.

"Your majesties" he said.

"There is no need for that Pharynx." Julius said.

"Pot or kettle my love?" Luna chided.

"True enough. What do you have to report?" Julius said.

"There are three of us on shift at any one time, two outside, one inside. The waitstaff arrived a few hours ago and unpacked the princess' belongings and stated they are happy to rearrange if you desire highness. Currently there are two staff members in their quarters, asleep." Pharynx reported.

"Thank you Pharynx, Luna and I are retiring for the night but the lady would like to look at the house briefly." Julius said looking at Luna who smiled.

Inside, Luna went from room to room, her magic casting a glow that allowed her to see but not be obtrusive.

"It's perfect Julius. How did you get all of my things here?" she asked in their bedroom.

"Twilight" Julius said lighting a candelabra with his fire breath.

"We must thank her properly for everything then." Luna said as they removed their wedding garb.

"I've been told you approved of the guard here, something about a surprise that would make their presence clear?" Julius said.

"Yes beloved." Luna said pulling out a vial of orange colored liquid from the hidden pocket of her gown.

"What is this?" Julius asked looking at the vial.

"Something I asked Zecora for help with." She replied looking worried.

"Luna? What's wrong?" Julius said sitting on the bed patting the place beside him where she sat.

"I am…nervous about potions but more so about your reaction." She replied.

"I know you would not keep secrets unless you desired a specific outcome my Princess of the Night. Tell me what this potion is for, I promise to not hold it against you if I find the reason distasteful." Julius pulled her close.

Luna smiled a sad smile, content that no matter what he wouldn't be upset.

"I asked Zecora for help in being able to give you something you denied yourself for sake of duty. The potion allows that dream to happen in the most expedient fashion; according to her, it maximizes the natural process so as to provide the best outcome in the quickest time…at least, that is what I discerned; Zecora's speech sometimes is confusing to me." Luna said.

"Wait…you aren't saying…? Luna!? Are you implying what I think you are implying?" Julius said excitedly.

"What do you think I'm implying my love?" Luna teased.

"Are you certain? At our age?" Julius asked.

"I am and I would find it a great adventure to do so. To experience it with you, someone I've cherished for that long a time, and to give you back something you thought you would never have: a legacy. I know we are just wed, but the potion is only good for three days. We do not have to decide this moment but…I would like to take this first step in that journey with you; to bring us closer and to surprise a few people." Luna said.

Julius held her and kissed her, tears freely flowing down his cheeks.

When they parted, Luna could not help but smile as her dragon was happier than she had seen him in a long time.

"Thank you, beloved." He replied simply.

"Twilight, what's this all about?" Starlight Glimmer asked as the Princess of Friendship as she nervously paced the throne room floor.

"That's just it, I don't know. It's been over a year since Julius and Luna were married and, while they have sent letters, they've been keeping very private lately. Their last missive said they needed to meet here in Canterlot, but not only me but you, Candace, Tempest and Celestia as well." Twilight said.

"But…why?" Tempest asked.

"They didn't say. I'm a bit worried." Twilight said.

"Why so worried my faithful student?" Celestia said entering the throne room.

"Celestia!" Twilight exclaimed running to her old teacher and embracing her.

"It has been too long since my last visit" Celestia said as Starlight and Tepest bowed in reverence.

"I'm so glad you're here, I need your help." Twilight said.

"Oh? How can I assist?" Celestia said.

"Have you heard from Luna or Julius recently?" Twilight asked.

"Not recently no, why?" Celestia asked.

"Have you seen them around Silver Shoals?" Starlight Glimmer asked.

"Only Julius and only so often. Luna has been very busy settling into her new life but, why so worried?" Celestia asked.

"I received this message two days ago from them. It has me worried." Twilight replied using her magic to bring the missive from her throne.

Celestia took it with her own magic and read it aloud:

"To her royal highness Princess Twilight Sparkle. Greetings and salutations, we hope this letter finds you well. Princess Luna and I first must apologize for not keeping in touch as much as we would have liked; events have moved apace for us. As such, we have a favor to ask of you. Luna and I will be in Canterlot in two days' time and apart from wanting to see you and catch up with some old friends; the favor we ask involves Starlight Glimmer, Princess Cadance, Tempest Shadow (if she is still going by that name), as well as you, your friends and Celestia. I'm sorry I can't elaborate more, but it is a matter of great importance to all of you and us as well. Celestia is aware of some details of this matter and she will most likely arrive before us, but we humbly request an audience with the ponies mentioned at the castle. Your humble servant, Julius."

Celestia finished.

"Ah Julius was always eloquent with words." She said returning the scroll to Twilight.

"What is he talking about?" Twilight asked, still concerned.

"Hmm, I can't say for certain, at least not why it pertains to Starlight Glimmer or the others, that is an odd request for sure." Celestia said.

"OOof!" a loud bang drew their attention to the doors.

"Sorry, sorry. Princess Twilight, I am so sorry I was not at my post to announce Princess Celestia's arrival." Gallus said straightening himself.

"It's my fault, I'm sorry. I've just not ever seen a Griffon as a guard and was curious." Cadance said.

"Cadance!" Twilight exclaimed.

The two ran to each other and embraced.

"You've grown up a bit" Cadance said.

"Sunshine, Sunshine, Ladybug's awake, clap your hooves and do a little shake!" they both said at the same time doing the dance they had done since they were little.

"Not so grown up it seems" Celestia said.

"I came as soon as I heard, what's wrong?" Cadance asked.

"We don't know; the letter we got from Luna and Julius didn't mention anything wrong, only that you and the others here be present when they arrived, they said it was important." Twilight said handing her the note which she read silently.

"I don't understand; what could be happening, I mean, they are retired after all." Starlight Glimmer said.

"We may just have to wait to ask them when they arrive." Tempest said.

"Princess, they are here." Gallus said.

"Show them in Gallus." Twilight said.

The second door opened and Julius and Luna walked in but it was apparent they were not alone.

"Thank you Gallus, you will be a fine captain someday, keep up the good work." Luna said.

Gallus bowed.

"Princess Twilight, Princess Cadance, Princess Celestia, my lady Starlight Glimmer, my lady Tempest Shadow, or do you prefer your original name?" Julius said making the two non-royals blush with his acknowledgement of them.

"Tempest will do sire." She replied.

"OW!" Julius yelped as Luna stomped on his tail intentionally.

"Sorry beloved, old habits." Julius apologized.

"Luna? What is this about?" Celestia asked as the others gathered closer.

Under Luna's wing was a bundle she carried with her magic.

"There was a very specific reason we came here today and now. Some of it is to show off a little, a part of it is to catch up but the majority of it is to show, tell and have a possible explanation." Luna said as the bundle moved and shifted.

"We…have been busy in many regards but in so doing we discovered something that could use all of your help in explaining and proving based on what we have found out, but first thing's first before my tail gets another stomping on" Julius said as he and Luna unfurled their wings together and revealed what was swaddled in the bundle.

All of them looked, saw and gasped.

A baby alicorn looked up at them all with his mother's eyes, his father's coloration and wings that were the most unusual combination of both: from his dragon lineage, the wings were green on the limbs with more pointed ends common among dragons at the joints, but the wings themselves were very clearly from his mother: feathers and were of similar coloration.

The strangest feature of all, however, was the presence of a cutie mark.

None had ever seen a pony so young with a cutie mark before; in this case, a green, rectangular emerald enshrouded by a white, half-moon.

"He's beautiful" Celestia said absent-minded.

"This is our son, Emerald Tide. The first male Alicorn in a thousand years and the first one of a Dragon and Alicorn union." Julius said gently picking up the small colt and cradling him next to his mother who nuzzled him.

"I've never seen a pony that had a cutie mark so young" Starlight said.

"No pony has" Twilight said transfixed on the baby.

"How is that possible?" Starlight said.

"It is the reason we asked Tempest to join us." Luna said.

"What…do you mean?" Tempest asked.

"Did we miss them!?" Spikes voice blurted down the hall as Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Rarity and Pinkie Pie galloped into the throne room completely bypassing Gallus, who shrugged.

"Relax you guys, you haven't missed anything except the introduction of Luna and Julius' son." Twilight said.

"WHAT!?" several of them said simultaneously.

Luna chuckled.

"Your chance to show and tell beloved." Julius said draping a wing around her.

Luna showed her son to the other ponies as they gathered around.

"Oh Luna, he's absolutely divine!" Rarity commented.

"I ain't never seen an Alicorn like that before." Applejack said.

"That is soooo cool! He's like…the best combination of his parents!" Rainbow Dash said.

"Isn't he just the sweetest thing?" Fluttershy smiled down at him.

"OOooooooh, this is the best first-time-meeting-a-male-alicorn-baby EVER!" Pinkie Pie exclaimed.

Luna beamed with pride.

"He is wonderful, but why did you ask for me?" Cadance said.

"Your magic stems from love and light; his from chaos and darkness. As a baby, he cannot control his magic and you are the best suited to help." Julius explained.

"Alright, but…help in what way?" Cadance persisted.

"Touch his magic with yours…it'll make sense when you do." Luna said with a smile.

Cadance did.

The rush of intensity she felt when she touched Emerald Tide wiped away every doubt, every pain, every negative thing was completely overwhelmed.

Cadance then understood the name they had given him and why they needed her help for the task they desired.

Withdrawing from the baby, she said "Alright, I now understand…everything actually."

"What should we do?" Twilight asked.

"Follow my lead, you'll all know what to do. Tempest, are you ready?" Cadance asked.

"Wait, Wait I haven't agreed to anything yet. What is going to happen?" Tempest said hesitantly.

"Tempest, do you trust Twilight?" Starlight Glimmer asked sitting next to her.

"Y…yes." Tempest replied hesitantly.

"Luna and Julius wouldn't have asked if they thought you would get hurt; this can only be helpful." Twilight said.

"Tempest Shadow?" Julius asked.

She looked at him.

"You have gone through much in your young life, both good and bad." Julius said.

"Under Twilight, more creatures have become reformed and friends than ever before; I should know." Starlight Glimmer said.

"As the Princess of Friendship, Twilight has surpassed my expectations and teachings I've had for her." Celestia said.

"Without her, I would not be here now" Luna said.

"You can trust her Tempest, I know that's hard givin' everythin' we've been through together." Applejack said.

"And with our son no less. I promise you Tempest, this is not to harm, but to heal." Julius reassured her.

She sighed and said "Very well, if you all say so, then I will trust your judgement. I am prepared, what do I need to do?"

"Just relax. Is everyone ready?" Cadance asked.

They all nodded as they sat in a circle around Julius, Luna and Emerald Tide.

Cadance used her magic to connect them all and as soon as they were, all of them were drawn into the white plane.

"Whoa" Rainbow Dash said.

"Where are we?" Twilight asked.

"This is the world between realms" Celestia said.

"The last time we were here, Celestia and I were at odds with each other." Luna said.

"This is where Nightmare Moon and Daybreaker were born" Starlight said.

"Oh…oh my do you feel that?" Fluttershy asked as the wave of intense love flowed over all of them.

"What is…I don't know how but…." Celestia remarked.

"It is your nephew, sister. His magic dominates here but it needs focus, control which he will learn in time. Beloved?" Luna replied as they all felt Julius and Luna pour their magic into the plane, directing, guiding their son's focus.

"Hey y'all, uh, are we 'supposed to be glowin'?" Applejack asked.

"OOOOH GLOWY!" Pinkie Pie said.

"The Elements of Harmony!" Twilight exclaimed.

"Celestia, Starlight…a bit of help here please." Julius said as he began to strain, feeding into Cadance who likewise was beginning to struggle.

"Whoops, sorry" Celestia replied adding her magic as Starlight added hers thus stabilizing theirs.

"Guys, I know what we need to do! Focus on Emerald and Tempest!" Twilight said as the ponies began to glow respectively.

Emerald Tide likewise began to glow and reached up and touched his tiny hooves and wings to Tempest Shadow's muzzle.

The Elements of Harmony materialized in a cascading rainbow that fell gently upon Emerald Tide who giggled cheerfully.

Tempest felt the little pony consume her entire being.

Every hurt she had ever felt or given he pulled from her without effort and it completely evaporated.

Tears formed and fell unbidden as the babe continued to rub his tiny hooves around her cheeks and giggle at her.

Warmth and love radiated from Emerald Tide over and through her very being; it was like being wrapped in a warm, full-bodied blanket.

And just as suddenly as it came, it vanished.

The Mane Six ceased glowing, the rainbow disappeared, Emerald still laughing and cooing.

"Cadance, it is done. You can release your hold now." Julius said.

"Alright" Cadance said with strained effort then released her magic.

Everyone was back in the throne room again.

"Tempest, how do you feel?" Julius asked.

"Different…whole, as if…" Tempest gasped as she rubbed her head and felt something she had not felt in a long time.

"Twilight, why don't you take Tempest to a mirror. I believe she will want to examine herself" Luna suggested.

Twilight nodded and placed a hoof on Tempest and teleported to her room within the castle.

"How…?" Applejack asked, referring to Tempest's change.

"Celestia, thoughts?" Juluis asked.

Celestia was introspective for a brief moment and said "The only explanation I can come up with is that because two opposing magics have come together, Emerald Tide's has become the perfect blend of both, not due in any small part to Zecora's potion which undoubtedly had an impact on just how that came about.

"Such was our conclusion" Luna said nuzzling her cooing foal.

"We needed to be certain there was nothing we had overlooked and so requested all of your help in case it was needed. Thankfully, I believe we have identified it, but…he will need guidance; help in using his gift; the implications of it…could change Equestria forever. Can we count on all of you?" Julius said.

"You betcha!" Applejack whooted.

"Absolutely!" Said Rainbow Dash.

"Count me in!" Said Pinkie Pie.

"Me too" Starlight Glimmer added.

"I'd love to help" Said Fluttershy.

"Oh there is no way I'd pass up the opportunity darlings!" Said Rarity.

"Nor would I" Celestia said.

"Or me. Flurry Heart and him could be perfect playmates" Cadance added.

"Count us both in as well" Twilight said as she and Tempest reappeared in the throne room.

In her private quarters, Tempest saw her full reflection in the mirror. Her horn had been repaired, her scar over her eye was healed.

"How did…how is this possible!?" she whispered in shock as she touched her horn unbelieving, fearful it was false or that it would break all over again, like glass.

When it didn't, she used her magic and it came so much easier to her; a feeling she hadn't felt since she was a filly.

She cast spells she had previously been unable to: picking up small objects, casting light and other similar things.

"Emerald Tide's power comes from his parent's; their age, wisdom and magic's are opposite each other and the potion Zecora made to allow them to have him influenced his birth, his ability however comes from the love he has been given by everyone, including us. He doesn't judge anything, he loves everypony, even you. that type of magic heals all wounds no matter how grievous. That ability is so rare, it's almost thought to be extinct and takes decades of practice to master and he did that as a baby." Twilight explained.

"That power…will need guidance, a proper outlet." Tempest replied.

"What do you say? Want a hoof in that?" Twilight asked.

"Are you kidding!? Of course I do!" Tempest replied nearly losing her composure she was so happy.

"Or me. Flurry Heart and him could be perfect playmates" Cadance added.

Tempest looked at Twilight as they returned to the throne room.

"Count us both in as well" Twilight said.

Tempest tentatively approached Luna, Julius and Emerald, her breath unsteady, tears threatening to fall.

Falling to her knees in front of them she squeezed her eyes tightly and said "Thank you isn't enough for a gift like this. I submit myself to your service. I will protect your son with my life. Please. I feel this is my purpose now. I've searched for so long and he has given me back what I had lost. I owe it to him and to you." she wept.

Julius placed a talon under her chin and gently forced her to look up at him.

With a smile he said "No Fizzlepop Berrytwist. Your horn was only your horn; a physical part of you yes, but not you as a person. Twilight redeemed you, not Emerald Tide; Twilight healed what was the most important thing—" Julius pointed to her heart, then continued "While the physical self is important and does have an impact, it is not the only aspect of a pony's self. Emerald Tide just gave you the bigger wave you were already surfing."

"Julius is right; you were already on a path to finding yourself again; the healing of your horn and eye were just byproducts of Emerald's true power: taking friendship and amplifying it's effects." Luna added.

"I still feel obligated. Something inside me says this is the right path." Tempest replied.

Julius looked at Luna quizzically.

"One more couldn't hurt" she said.

"Your certain?" Julius asked.

"She certainly is" Luna said.

"Twilight, where is Tempest in her studies at your school?" Julius asked.

"She's nearly graduated. Top marks in almost all classes." Starlight Glimmer chimed in.

Julius again looked at Luna who in turn looked at Celestia saying "Look familiar sister?"

Celestia did recognize the situation; it was exactly how Julius had appeared to their parents so long ago.

"Now that you mention it, it does look familiar. What was it father said when Julius prostrated himself before us…GAHHH!" Celestia was quickly silenced by Julius wrapping her in a massive hug.

"You swore you would never divulge that, and besides, this is different." he said hastily.

Luna, Celestia and the others giggled hysterically.

"My, my, for someone who claims they have no pride, that was a quick reaction" Luna said.

"Not helping, beloved" Julius grumbled through gritted teeth.

"It is true, I did promise never to reveal that, but it was a funny memory" Celestia said as Julius let her up.

"My placation aside, Tempest, I will not put you through the same ordeal Luna and Celestia's father put me through. That said, the agreement is this: You finish your studies at The School of Friendship with top marks and if you do, report to Silver Shoals where we will have duties for you to apply your experiences and studies around Emerald Tide. Are you agreed?" Julius said looking at Luna who nodded.

Tempest could contain herself no longer.

"Can…I hug you?" she tapped on her hooves.

"Twilight has taught you well Tempest or rather Fizzlepop" Julius opened his arms for a hug which she hopped into.

"I prefer Tempest but you can call me Dirt if you want" she replied before doing the same to Luna and Emerald.

"See you soon, little gem" she smiled at Emerald and trotted out of the hall, a spring in her step, happier than she could recall being.

"Careful Julius, you may have created a monster." Celestia said.

"Better the devil you know and will work with you and not against you. Tempest will devote herself to him as she did to the Storm King but for the opposite reason: loyalty, love, devotion." Julius said.

"Things you are very good at my dear" Luna said stepping up to and kissing Julius in a deep and passionate kiss, Emerald cooing and giggling.

The End.
