Chapter 25: Three's a Fun Crowd

"Sampo Koski, you are under arrest."

I was trying my hardest to not crack under the biggest joke I had been subjected to. Especially when the one that was putting me 'under arrest' was someone that could pull such a cheeky thing without breaking character. Who would have thought the Lady Tianquan of the Liyue Qixing could act so cheesily around yours truly? Indeed, Ning Ning had matured into a smooth troll as far as I could tell.

And yet, it was also fair to say that this meeting was not a happy reunion. It was partly that, but there was more to it. "Give us more, PoPo," The one-eyed pirate pushed back, a soft slap against my closest elbow made me straighten up my posture.

"Fine, I will start with the one none of us can prevent: Rex Lapis is planning to retire within a few weeks from now."

"Are you fucking serious?" Doudou asked and I had to shrug.

"I am not going to lie at all about these three topics. It's big news, and it is very relevant for you all to know since the way he will do that is by faking his death for the upcoming Rite."

Ning Ning's right fist slammed onto her desk, sending some papers flying while she stared at me in shock. "Why would he do something like that?"

"Heeeh, I would say he has his reasons. He wants Liyue as a whole to be more independent. He wants both the Harbor and the Adepti to be more united for upcoming threats. Also, he may be a wise guy, but he is still an old man that doesn't know how to politely say 'you are all grownups and I need to retire, peace'."

"If he said it like that it would be worse," The pirate lady argued and I thought about it. Maybe that was the case, but definitely better than what we may end up getting. "Also, how are we supposed to unite with the Adepti when they have grown so distant to us?"

"An issue for later, but definitely a concern that may require further research in the new few days," Ningguang agreed with a nod, her eyes back to me. "What about the rest?"

"Well, the Fatui somehow knows that. And they are planning to steal the gnosis the moment the chaos happens."

"Do you have any proof of that?" The Tianquan pressed back and I smiled.

"They already took the Anemo and the Electro Gnoses. They want to get them all for some big plan of theirs," I answered and then sighed. "It is not proof that the Bank here will do the same, but they have left some proof behind. They will use another distraction to get the opportunity to take it. Which leads me to the third issue, and the easiest to prepare to."

I raised three fingers and then dropped the nuke.

"The Fatui will use fake sigils to weaken the seals suppressing Osial. And as anyone with awareness of the harbor's past, Rex Lapis or not, the bastard will come at us with all the intentions to kill the harbor."

Ningguang hummed herself, eyes closing for a few seconds as she thought about it. "Can we push him back?"

"If you get the ships harnessing the famous Guizhou Ballista with some improvements, that should do it," I offered, then humming. "The Adeptiwilljoin to support us too considering it is a pretty disastrous situation."

"The Guizhou Ballista is an old thing, and not many can get it to work. So, unless you know someone that can fix it, I doubt it can be mass-produced as you want, PoPo," Doudou pointed out, actually bringing back the fact that it was the case - the Guizhou Ballista was still a mystery, and the only way for its fixing and using to be discovered was through... Oh!

"Well, I know a wise man that will soon join the harbor who will be more than capable of handling that. His name is Zhongli and, if my calculations are right, he seems the kind of relic that will look for a job somewhere quite calm. Hutao's parlor, perhaps?"

"And you think he will be enough?" Ningning asked strongly and I nodded. "Then we will be looking for this man in a few days. Anything else we should know about this 'Zhongli'?"

"If you find any irregularities with his documentation, or a lack of evidence over his past, don't question him. He is already skittish to put his life back to help this harbor after having done so much for it. I doubt he would be so kind to give us all another chance if we disrupt his chance to find peace in a new life."

A most cryptic tone, but I knew Ningguang was going to find out what I meant once she got to met the 'old' man. All in all, the meeting went on quite smoothly. I want to say that there was more to discuss, but that would be a lie. I was told how Ningguang bid her way into the post she was holding, how that facilitated Beidou's rise to pretty much the equivalent of 'Grand Admiral of Liyue', and how business had been growing between their elevation to their current positions and in no small part also through my own moves in Inazuma opening the country for trading.

I had noticed some Inazuman traders bringing some rare gems, so I guess that brought more variety in the market at a time where the usual local minerals were growing too stale to sell at a good price. Variety would create a little break from the original trend and then bring the attention back to it once the 'fad' had finished its course. Inazuma had opened its doors! The news was eventually going to died down once the Electro Archon's own merchants became a common sight.

All in all, the three of us had shaped Liyue's affairs unto a positive trend for the upcoming years, no doubt about it, but while I expected this to end up in a fairly simple exchange of booze and wine, I may have underestimated two things: the intensity of the liquor, and the feelings these strong ladies had for yours truly.
