As the morning wore on, the atmosphere in the living room grew increasingly relaxed and cheerful. Sirius and Remus were regaling the children with tales of their escapades alongside James and Lily, eliciting peals of laughter as they recounted their more ridiculous antics.
Harry, who had initially been rather shy and reserved, found himself seated on the floor, utterly captivated. His eyes widened in delight as Sirius shared a particularly amusing story about how James had once accidentally turned his hair a bright shade of pink during a rather chaotic Potions class.
Remus smiled fondly as he observed Harry, a sense of nostalgia washing over him. The little boy bore such an uncanny resemblance to his parents that it stirred a deep-seated affection within him.
Just then, Diana felt the wards shift subtly, signaling the arrival of their next visitor. Rising from her seat, she made her way to the entrance hall, opting not to call upon a house-elf to attend to it. She left the children and the two men to continue their storytelling session uninterrupted.
Upon reaching the entrance hall, she was greeted by the familiar, warm smile of Minerva McGonagall and the more austere countenance of Severus Snape. The former was expected, but Severus's presence was a surprise—albeit not an unwelcome one.
"Ah, Severus, Minerva, welcome," Diana said cheerfully, managing to mask her surprise at Severus's unexpected appearance with a warm smile.
Severus's sharp gaze scanned the room before returning to settle on Diana.
Minerva, on the other hand, returned her greeting with one of her own. "Thank you, Diana."
Both were dressed in casual attire befitting a relaxed Saturday visit. While Severus stood tall and composed as ever, Diana could sense the tension radiating off him like an electric current. She wondered what Minerva might have said to persuade him to join them today.
"I'm delighted you could make it, Minerva," she said before turning to Severus. "And I'm truly happy you're here as well; I know Harry would be thrilled to meet you too."
Severus nodded curtly in acknowledgment, and they began walking towards the living room.
"Remus and Sirius are already in there," Diana mentioned casually while casting a side glance at Severus; however, there was no visible reaction from him.
As they entered the living room, peals of laughter floated through the air like music. The children were all seated cross-legged on the floor, giggling uncontrollably while Sirius animatedly recounted another misadventure from their youth. Remus wore an expression that suggested he might want nothing more than to kick Sirius for some of his embellishments.
"Everyone!" Diana clapped her hands together to garner their attention. They all turned towards her; however, most of their focus quickly shifted to the two figures standing behind her.
"Harry! Come over here," she called out gently.
The little boy slowly stood up and scampered over to her side. Lifting him up into her arms, she turned around so that he faced Minerva and Severus. Minerva's eyes glistened with emotion as tears threatened to spill over; meanwhile, Severus maintained his cold façade.
"This is Harry," Diana announced proudly.
"Oh," Minerva sniffed softly. "He looks just like—"
"James," Sirius interjected quickly. "Yes."
Minerva glanced between Sirius and Remus before returning her gaze to Harry.
"Hello there."
Harry tilted his head curiously. "You're the one Diana said taught my parents?"
"Yes, indeed," Minerva replied with a warm smile that made Harry beam up at her in delight.
Then Diana turned her attention toward Severus; however, he had bowed his head slightly, his fists clenched tightly at his sides—a clear indication of his inner turmoil.
"Severus?" she prompted gently.
The man shook his head slowly as if trying to dispel some invisible weight pressing down on him. "Don't," he said tersely before inhaling deeply. "I shouldn't have come here."
Minerva immediately shifted closer and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder; however, Severus flinched away from her touch as if it burned him.
"I shouldn't have come here," he repeated firmly before turning abruptly and making his way back toward where they had entered.
Harry's eyes filled with tears at this abrupt rejection as he looked up at Diana with confusion written all over his small face. "Doesn't he like me?"
"Oh no dear," Minerva spoke up quickly before Diana could respond. "It has nothing whatsoever to do with you. Severus simply needs some time."
"I'll—"
"We'll go talk to him!" Remus exclaimed suddenly as he shot up from his seat.
The women turned their gazes toward him in surprise at his boldness.
Minerva shook her head firmly. "I don't think that's a good idea."
"It's not," Sirius added as he stood up beside Remus. "But Remus is right; we should go talk to him."
Minerva's expression turned anxious; she had promised not to hold either party accountable for their childhood transgressions—just as she had done for Severus—but sending these two after him could lead to complications she wished to avoid.
"It'll be fine; please just let us handle this," Sirius insisted earnestly.
Minerva sighed heavily but realised that perhaps this was necessary for bridging whatever chasm lay between them all—however perilous it might be.
"Very well," she relented after a moment's contemplation. "But do tread carefully."
The two men nodded resolutely before striding out of the room together.
Diana looked down at her four boys who had mostly tuned out the previous conversation and were now preoccupied with eyeing a plate of biscuits nearby.
"Hey boys!" she called out cheerily to regain their attention. "Come say hello to Minerva!"
The four boys turned their focus toward Minerva once more; Theron's eyes widened in recognition.
"You teach at Hogwarts!" he exclaimed excitedly.
Minerva blinked in surprise before raising an eyebrow playfully at him. "And how pray tell do you know that?"
Diana rolled her eyes good-naturedly before gently setting Harry down so he could join his friends around the biscuits.
"Please do take a seat, Minerva," she offered graciously as Minerva walked towards the couch that Sirius and Remus had just vacated and settled down comfortably upon it.
Minerva settled onto the couch, her expression softening as she took in the lively energy of the children. Their laughter and animated chatter reminded her of her own time at Hogwarts, the joy that came with teaching young minds eager to learn. She watched as Harry joined Theron and the others, their faces lighting up with excitement.
"Did you really teach my dad how to turn his hair pink?" Harry asked, his eyes wide with awe.
Minerva chuckled softly, a fond smile gracing her lips. "I believe it was more of a lesson in transfiguration gone awry. James was quite the troublemaker, but he had a heart of gold."
Harry blinked. "Then why does he hate me?"
Minerva knew immediately that she was referring to Severus. "Oh no child, he just misses your mum. She meant the world to him. He doesn't hate you."
And Minerva knew with her heart that she wasn't wrong.
