Esmeralda Hangout Act 1
A/N: All five paths of this hangout will be repeated in full, leading to a certain degree of repetition in the chapter. All special dialogue (that affects the path of the hangout chosen) will be marked. Unlike some existing hangouts, the overall format will be simple, with a single start branching into five paths. There will be no heart/affection meter. Note that, for the purpose of this story, all five endings are considered canon, and future chapters will assume that all of them have taken place. Also, Paimon will be missing, as she is in every hangout.

Path 1
It has been some time since you last talked to Esmeralda. Visit her at her workshop at the Fontaine Research Institute.
Knock on the door. There is no response. Esmeralda must either be busy or elsewhere.
Raimondo: Hello there, Traveler. Looking for Esmeralda?
Aether: Yes, that's right. Do you know where she is?
Raimondo: She left just a few minutes ago. She mentioned that she was going to visit the Icewind Suite if you want to go after her.
Aether: Got it. Thank you, Raimondo.
Raimondo: Bye.
Go to the Icewind Suite.
When you arrive, the Dirge of Coppelia is active. It is currently engaged in a fierce battle with Daisy. Esmeralda and Maillardet are nearby, spectating. The former has a large silver visor over her eyes. She takes it off as you arrive.
Esmeralda: Oh! Hey, Aether! How are you?
Aether: I'm doing alright. How about you? / I've been looking for you. / It's been a while. How are the eyes?
Esmeralda: Oh? All's well on my end. As for my new eyes...
Esmeralda: Not to brag, but I made them. Of course they're working great!
Esmeralda: Still, making them was an absolute pain. It was easily the most complicated thing I've ever done.
Aether: That's what you were doing all those months?
Esmeralda: Months? Wow, has it really been that long? I must have lost track of time while I was working on it.
Esmeralda: You helped me make the initial version... Then the second one was where I brought it up to standard. That one took a few weeks, I think.
Esmeralda: Then the third version, which was a complete redesign, and the fourth, which I had to read so many books for. Huh. It's been so long since we met.
Esmeralda: Thanks for checking up on me, Aether. I've missed you.
Aether: I always look after my friends. / I've missed you too.
Maillardet: Sorry to interrupt, but data collection is complete.
Esmeralda: Oh! Thanks, Maillardet. Did Daisy win?
Maillardet: Who wins is irrelevant. The data will be processed and the scene reset. Thank you for participating. I won't bother the two of you anymore.
Esmeralda: Don't listen to him, Aether. Daisy won, of course. She's the best.
Daisy: Greetings, Aether.
Aether: So why is Daisy fighting Coppelia and Coppelius?
Esmeralda: Well, to put it simply, she wanted to. What was that she said? 'I wanted to challenge myself and test my abilities.'
Esmeralda: I think that she's tired of being cooped up in the workshop with me and wants to let off some steam by beating things up. And hey, Maillardet approves! It's a win-win.
Daisy: I am willing to help you for as long as it takes, Esmeralda.
Esmeralda: Aw, you're the best. But you have your own personality now, right? I'm sure that there are other things that you want to experience, right? Don't worry about me.
Daisy: ...Indeed.
Esmeralda: Oh! I've got an idea. Say, Aether, wanna hang out? Daisy gets to do her own thing and we get to catch up.
Esmeralda: I was planning to go and investigate some of Fontaine's Meks, but that's not urgent. We could do something else if you'd like.
(The following dialogue option determines the path of the event that is chosen. The current path is path 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
Aether: I'll accompany you on your mission. (Path 1, 2)
Aether: Let me show you around Fontaine. (Path 3, 4, 5)
(This section is Path 1 and assumes that the first choice is taken.)
Esmeralda: Great! What do you think, Daisy?
Daisy: That is acceptable. Please take care of Esmeralda, Aether.
Aether: Don't worry, I will.
Daisy: I shall return soon.
Esmeralda: Bye, Daisy!
Aether: How do you find Fontaine? / Do you like your workshop?
Esmeralda: Fontaine's nice. It's a lot more advanced than what I'm used to, which is great. They use robots as guards. How fascinating. The problem is, well, I don't really know a lot of people, but I can handle that. I'm kind of used to it. / The workshop is acceptable. I've got most of the stuff I need, but I miss my old equipment. It should be in the old factory in Liyue... Maybe I could go retrieve it someday.
Esmeralda: Anyway, we should get going. The Fontaine Research Institute gave me directions to some of their old Meks that they lost control of during the... incident.
Esmeralda: I'm sure you know what I'm talking about - it's the reason why the Institute was forced to abandon the floating water cubes and relocate.
Esmeralda: Anyway, let's get going. We can talk more once we're there.
Go to the first location.
Esmeralda: Let's see... There they are. Do you see that group of Meks with the Treasure Hoarders? They belonged to the Institute and were used for surveying geological anomalies. Looks like they're being used as miners now.
Esmeralda: Would you mind helping me with the Hoarders? I need to ask them some questions. Try not to damage the Meks either.
Defeat the enemies.
Hoarder: I surrender!
Esmeralda: I'm going to ask you some questions. Please answer them to the best of your ability, if you don't mind.
Hoarder: Um, sure?
Esmeralda: Great! First, how did you get these Meks? Where did you find them, how you're controlling them, that sort of thing?
Hoarder: Well, we didn't steal them, I promise. My gang was just exploring the area a couple of weeks ago, looking for some, er, rare materials. It's an honest living, yeah? We're not the kind that robs people.
Hoarder: So we came across this group of Meks just idling around. One of our guys knew some mechanical stuff, so we subdued them and he managed to do his thing.
Esmeralda: What did he do?
Hoarder: I've no idea. I'm no scholar, couldn't make heads or tails of what he worked on. In the end, though, he managed to get the Meks going again.
Hoarder: They're mining Meks, so we just pointed them at the nice ores and they did the rest. Honest work, like I said. We don't harm or rob anyone.
Esmeralda: Where's this person you're talking about?
Hoarder: Well, he's not here right now, so he must have managed to flee when you two came barging in. I've no idea where he could have gone.
Esmeralda: That's a shame, but fine. I'm going to need to take these Meks off your hands. They belong to the Fontaine Research Institute and I've been sent to recover them.
Esmeralda: As for you guys... Aether, what should we do with them?
Aether: Let them go. They didn't harm anyone. / Maybe we should bring them in.
Esmeralda: Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. / Really? They didn't do anything too bad, though.
Esmeralda: Actually, I have a better idea. How about you guys bring the Meks back to the Institute for us instead?
Hoarder: Huh?
Esmeralda: Yeah! Escort the Meks back to the Institute and tell them I sent you. Then we don't need to arrest you and you can even get a reward out of it!
Esmeralda: And I've placed trackers on the Meks, so if you try to run off again, it'll be the Gardes after you next time. Deal?
Hoarder: You can count on us. Alright, boys, let's go!
Esmeralda: Right. Aether, let's continue, shall we? We're not that far from the next location.
Walk with Esmeralda.
Esmeralda: You've been all over Fontaine already, haven't you, Aether? Since that's the case, I'm sure that you have run into all kinds of Meks.
Esmeralda: Apparently, the countryside is full of aggressive Meks, abandoned a long time ago. It's quite interesting, actually, that without active commands, they return to their original tasks.
Esmeralda: The Meks are mostly built for a single purpose, which they revert to automatically. The mining Meks will seek out ores to mine, the recon Meks keep moving around, and the Guardmeks, well, guard.
Esmeralda: Except that as their systems degrade, they tend to identify almost anything as hostile and act accordingly. They're the most dangerous, naturally.
Esmeralda: It's a sensible way to make robots. Specialized for a single purpose, unlike Daisy, whom I kept improving in various ways. She's more like us than the Meks - a human can be anything they want, and so can she.
Esmeralda: On the other hand, the Meks like the mining Mek can only mine. They can't -
Esmeralda: Look out!
Engage the ambushing Treasure Hoarders.
Esmeralda: Argh!
Fend off the Treasure Hoarders.
Aether: Esmeralda, are you alright?
Esmeralda: Ow. That hurt.
Aether: You're bleeding! Let me bandage your arm.
Esmeralda: Thanks, Aether. Don't worry, it's just a scratch. I'm good to go.
Aether: Are you sure? / Perhaps we should return. / You need to rest.
Esmeralda: It's just a minor injury. I'll be fine, really. Still, you make a good point. I need to do something about this tear in my dress.
Esmeralda: Alright, you win. Would you mind accompanying me back to the workshop? I'll need to clean myself up and get a change of clothes.
Esmeralda: Wait, but first, why'd you attack us?
Hoarder: You started it! You attacked and arrested our friends for no reason!
Esmeralda: What? I let them go! I even gave them a commission! Ah, whatever. Let's go, Aether.
Return to the workshop.
Esmeralda: Wait here for a moment, please. I'll take just a while to tidy up.
Wait for Esmeralda.
Esmeralda: That feels much better.
Esmeralda: What should we do now? There's still plenty of time in the day. I'm in good enough shape to continue the search for the Meks. What do you think, Aether?
(The following dialogue option determines the path of the event that is chosen. The current path is path 1, 2.)
Aether: If you think that you can continue, I'll ensure your safety. (Path 1)
Aether: Perhaps we should do something less demanding. I have an idea. (Path 2)
(This section is Path 1 and assumes that the first choice is taken.)
Esmeralda: Nice! Right, there are a few more locations to check. The next place is... this area. Let's get going!
Go to the marked location.
Esmeralda: There they are. A group of Guardmeks that went haywire after the incident. Looks like there's quite a few of them.
Esmeralda: It's not going to be easy to defeat them head-on. Let me see if I can make things easier. Do you notice anything odd about them?
Aether: This one hasn't moved for a while. / No, I don't see anything.
Esmeralda: Yes, it's been standing there the whole time. Let's get a closer look. Maybe I can figure out what happened to it and use it to help us. / Hmm... I have an idea. If I swap my visor mode... Ah! Look at the signals coming from that one. I think it's the leader. If I can get to it, I might be able to override it and regain control of all of them.
Esmeralda: Let's go. Try not to be spotted.
Sneak to the stationary Mek. / Sneak to the command Mek.
Esmeralda: Right, let's see... Oh, this one's systems were rebooted some time ago. I should be able to reactivate it... Done. With this one's help, you should be able to handle the rest, right? / Let me see... If I initiate an emergency shutdown command, it should disable most of them. There! About half of them are down. Handle the rest before they notice!
Defeat the Meks.
Esmeralda: Nice work, Aether. Looks like you've been improving since I last saw you.
Esmeralda: First, I need you to help me open up the panels in their torso; it's where the memory cores are stored. I need to recover them for the Institute.
Esmeralda: After that, I'll take a look through them and see if there's anything interesting.
You follow Esmeralda's instructions. Once she is satisfied, she leads you to another few locations, dealing with the Meks present. It is a long and tiring process and night soon falls.
Esmeralda: Finally, we're done. Yawn... I'm so tired. Seems like it was a mistake to try to get all of this done in one day. I'm so tired I can barely walk.
Esmeralda: It's such a long way back, and I haven't walked so much in such a long time. Usually, Daisy can carry me around. Aw, I miss her.
Esmeralda: Hey, Aether...
Path 1 Ending: Endless Research
The image shows Aether carrying Esmeralda on his back, coming to a stop outside her workshop. She is asleep, with a bag of parts slung around her shoulder. There is a bandage around her arm. Aether is glancing at her, a small smile on his lips.
'All work and no play makes for a very tiring day.'

Aether: Follow me. / You'll see when we get there.
Esmeralda: Okay... Sure, I'll trust you. Let's go!
Go to Chiori's Boutique.
Esmeralda: This place... I've passed by this shop a few times when I was in the city before. It's a clothing shop, isn't it?
Aether: Do you want to get some new clothes?
Esmeralda: Well... I guess I could. I have been wearing the same few sets for quite a long time now. Maybe I should get a new design.
Esmeralda: But I must warn you that my fashion sense is not very good. And this shop looks quite expensive.
Esmeralda: Wait, are you planning to get me custom clothing? That's not necessary. We could just go and buy some simple ones.
Aether: Don't worry about the cost, I've got it covered. Consider it my treat. / Don't worry, the owner of this shop can help with the design. She's skilled at it.
Chiori: Oh? Hello, Aether. Are you looking for some clothes?
Aether: Chiori, this is Esmeralda. We're looking to get her some new clothing, yes.
Esmeralda: Hello.
Chiori: Well, you've come at a good time - I'm free at the moment. Come on in.
Enter Chioriya Boutique.
Chiori: So, Esmeralda. What kind of design do you have in mind?
Esmeralda: Well... I'm not really sure. This visit was kind of a spontaneous decision.
Chiori: That's fine; you're not the first. Why don't you tell me what purpose you want your clothes to have and your preferences, and I'll come up with some ideas for you?
Chiori: Let's start with your current clothing. Where'd you get this dress from? It looks like you modified an Adventurer's Guild uniform.
Esmeralda: Ah, I did, actually.
Chiori: I see. Any comments about it?
Esmeralda: Well... It's a little loose and gets in the way of moving quickly sometimes. Also, it's a bit awkward for my tail.
Chiori: I can see. Alright, any other thoughts?
Esmeralda: Well, I think that it's kind of basic. I was actually thinking if I could find a way to integrate some technology into it.
Chiori: Intriguing. Please elaborate.
Esmeralda: Ah? I mean, it's just an idea. I'm not sure if it's possible.
Chiori: Now I'm really interested. Tell me your ideas, Esmeralda, and let me decide if it's possible.
Esmeralda: Okay... I'm thinking that we could try...
Path 2 Ending: Future Designs
The image is that of Esmeralda and Chiori in deep discussion. They are seated at a table, on which lie scattered drawings and sketches of clothing.
'In every aspect: newer and better.'

(This section is Path 3 and assumes that the second choice is taken.)
Esmeralda: Sounds nice and safe, eh, Daisy? There'll be nothing for you to worry about.
Daisy: That is acceptable. Please take care of Esmeralda, Aether. I will return soon.
Esmeralda: Bye, Daisy!
Esmeralda: So, Aether, where are we going first? Fontaine city?
Aether: How about somewhere closer? / Since we're here already, why not visit the Opera Epiclese first?
Esmeralda: Oh, that building behind us? Sure, let's go.
Follow Esmeralda.
Esmeralda: I've been around here a few times, but never actually went inside. The Opera Epiclese is where the trials are held, right?
Esmeralda: That's probably why I've never been in there. Such things... don't interest me. However, it's apparently a really big deal in Fontaine, seeing the number of people here. I wonder why.
Aether: The people of Fontaine see the trials as a performance. / There are also other performances like Lyney's magic show.
Esmeralda: Trials as a performance... I'd assume that they're in it for the intrigue and secrets. The mystery of right and wrong, I suppose. Hmm... Not my style. I prefer things to be more straightforward. Science and numbers do not lie; there is a firm sense of right and wrong. I guess that's why I'm an engineer instead of a judge. / Lyney... That Fatui magician who helped us before? So in addition to a court, the Opera Epiclese is also a theater. Seems odd to me, to be mixing these things, but I guess the locals do seem to enjoy it. That would explain why there are so many people around here all the time.
Esmeralda: Well, we're here. Should we go in?
Enter the Opera Epiclese.
Esmeralda: Well, this looks grand. Hey, someone seems to be trying to get your attention.
Lynette: Hello Aether. And you must be Esmeralda. Would the two of you like to join me for some tea?
Aether: Lynette? What brings you here? / Where's Lyney?
Lynette: Well, my brother and I are preparing for a show tonight. We're here early to set everything up. A lot of preparation goes into our performances, as you know.
Esmeralda: But if you're getting ready for a performance, shouldn't you be helping Lyney? I thought you were his assistant.
Lyney: I'm sure that Lyney and the other helpers are more than capable of setting things up without me. Besides, it would be rude to leave the two of you alone. Cake?
Esmeralda: Ooh, yes please.
Esmeralda: Mmm... It's great.
Lynette: that's good to hear. So, what brings the two of you here? Planning to watch a trial? I'm afraid it may not be as interesting as the last one you were in.
Esmeralda: You were on trial? I've heard about that. But no, I'm not really into that kind of thing. Aether's showing me around and we happened to be nearby.
Lynette: Ah, I see. Well, he's got plenty of experience adventuring around the nation, so you're in good hands. I see you like the cake.
Esmeralda: It's delicious. Hey, Aether...
Aether: Fine, you can have my slice. / Nope, this one's mine.
Esmeralda: Yes! You're the best, Aether! / Aww...
Lynette: How are the eyes? Looks like you've gotten them figured out.
Esmeralda: Eh? How'd you know?
Lynette: Lyney mentioned it. Also, your eyes do look quite mechanical, and you haven't blinked very much.
Esmeralda: Oh. Right, blinking. Fortunately, everything's been fine so far. I made them to last and did a great job of it.
Lynette: Made them yourself? Impressive. Perhaps you would like to help with our devices too.
Esmeralda: Maybe... It depends.
Lyney: Lynette, where are you? It's almost time for the rehearsal - Oh! Aether and Esmeralda. Here to watch the show?
Aether: Not this time, I'm afraid. / We'll leave you to your rehearsal.
Lyney: Ah, that's a shame. Well, don't let me interrupt whatever you're busy with, then. / Right, of course. Lynette, let's go, we're running late!
Lyney: Don't forget to watch our show next time, alright? I'll prepare the best seats for you, Aether. Esmeralda, you're invited too. Come on, Lynette, let's go.
Esmeralda: See you! Thanks for the cake.
Esmeralda: Those two... don't seem like bad people, despite being Fatui. But let's not think about that. Where to now, Aether?
(The following dialogue option determines the path of the event that is chosen. The current path is path 3, 4, 5)
Aether: Let's ride the aquabus to Poisson. (Path 3)
Aether: Let's ride the aquabus back to the city. (Path 4, 5)
(This section is Path 3 and assumes that the first choice is taken.)
(The following short section is the same for paths 3, 4, 5.)
Esmeralda: Sounds good.
Go to Marcotte Station and board the aquabus.
Elphane: Hello, passengers. I am your tour guide for this trip, Elphane. We are now heading to the Court of Fontaine.
Esmeralda: You know, Aether, I've never really taken the aquabus before. By the looks of it, these vehicles are actually pretty simple. Lightweight materials to ensure that it floats, plus a propeller powered by a pnuemousia battery.
Esmeralda: Of course, it would require a system to ensure that it keeps on track and doesn't bump into the sides of the aqueduct. It's probably done manually by a driver in the front of the aquabus. Right, Elphane?
Elphane: Indeed so, dear passenger. The aquabus operators work hard to ensure a safe and smooth ride for everyone.
Esmeralda: Hmm. But it should be simple enough to make a self-correcting system that can automatically keep the aquabus on track... I wonder why they haven't. All that's needed is...
Elphane: Looking left from your current position, you have possibly the very best view of the Opera Epiclese in all of Fontaine.
Aether: Why don't we enjoy the view?
Esmeralda: Ah, right. Sorry, I tend to get distracted by this kind of thing.
Some time passes as you ride the aquabus with Esmeralda, chatting and enjoying the scenery. Soon, the aquabus arrives at your destination.
Esmeralda: Looks like we're here. Let's get off.
(The paths diverge here. This is path 3.)
Esmeralda: We're at Poisson now. Where to, Aether?
Aether: Let me introduce you to a friend of mine. Follow me.
Look for Navia.
Navia: Post guards at the exits, then. If anyone gets even a glimpse of it, call for assistance. Do not try to fight it until I get there. Understand?
Florent: Understood!
Aether: What's going on?
Navia: Hey there, partner. You've come at a bad time, I'm afraid. There's something dangerous loose in the tunnels around Poisson and I need to take care of things.
Esmeralda: Sounds like you could use some help.
Navia: Yes, but... I'm sorry, but who are you?
Aether: This is Esmeralda. / We came here to visit you.
Navia: I'm sorry to disappoint, but now is not a good time. If you don't mind, however, we could sure use your help.
Esmeralda: Sure, why not?
Aether: Of course, I'll help. What's wrong?
Navia: Ha, thanks, partner! Here's the overview: something huge came to Poisson recently. We're not sure what it is, but it's tunneling all over the place, shaking the houses and causing all kinds of damage.
It's tunneling all over the place.
Navia: Only a few people have seen it, and they described it as a gigantic brown worm that can move through the ground faster than a man can run.
Navia: We don't know where it will strike or what it's even doing, so it's not easy to track down. All we can do for now is post guards around the area to give us a warning if it ever comes back.
Navia: Got any ideas, partner?
Esmeralda: I can see something...
Navia: Huh? What do you mean?
Esmeralda: Follow me.
Esmeralda hurries off, pulling down her visor.
Follow Esmeralda.
Navia: Hey! Where are you going?
Esmeralda: There's something in this direction. A ruin machine of some kind. I can see it communicating.
Navia: You can what?
Esmeralda: Um, right. This visor I'm wearing. It enhances my vision and allows me to see certain things that normal people cannot.
Esmeralda: I'm sure that your mysterious beast is a ruin machine of some sort - I can see it trying to communicate, but something's wrong.
Esmeralda: Wait... It's nearby.
The ground rumbles and shakes ominously. In a violent burst of rock, the beast erupts from underground. It is not a natural beast, but, as predicted, a mechanical tunneling creature. The Ruin Serpent roars.
Esmeralda: No!
The Ruin Serpent quickly burrows and tunnels away. Very quickly, the tremors subside.
Navia: What was that thing? What just happened? Who are you?
Esmeralda: I... Ugh...
Esmeralda collapses.
Navia: Shoot. Help me bring her to a clinic Aether. Then I hope we can get some answers.
Meet Navia at the clinic.
Navia: She seems unhurt, just exhausted. Alright, Aether, who is this? What's going on?
You tell her about Esmeralda, including her past experience with machinery.
Navia: So that's it, huh? That visor of hers lets her, what, talk to Ruin Machines? Wow, that's new. I've never heard of anyone who managed something like that.
Navia: And that robot of hers, Daisy. You're not pulling my leg, are you, partner?
Esmeralda: Ugh... Where am I?
Navia: You're awake! Don't worry, you're safe here. We're in a clinic in Poisson, and the doctors say that you're fine.
Navia: Aether's told me a bit about you. Tell me, Esmeralda: exactly what happened just now?
Esmeralda: Uhh... Let me think. I was tracking the Ruin Serpent by listening to it talking. It was... damaged, I think.
Esmeralda: It's words were chaotic. Something was wrong with its mind. Like it was constantly screaming out for orders, but rejecting any that it received.
Navia: That's not good, I'd say.
Esmeralda: Yeah. It's just digging randomly now.
Navia: This digging is causing all kinds of problems. Whenever it gets close to Poisson, the vibrations cause all kinds of damage. Then there's the tunnels it leaves - too many and the entire area might just collapse.
Navia: You're the expert on this, Esmeralda. Tell me, how can we destroy it and prevent any more damage?
Esmeralda: I mean, I'd prefer it if we could disable it so that I could properly analyze it and see if it's possible to repair.
Navia: Even if that's possible, I don't think it's a good idea. Who knows how much more damage it could cause until then. People haven't died yet, Esmeralda, but it's only a matter of time before that thing burrows underneath a house and collapses it onto a family.
Esmeralda: I understand. Let me think...
Esmeralda: Right. I have an override code that I can broadcast. Although the Serpent is rejecting standard commands, the override should work on it.
Navia: Great. Use that signal to lure it out and then we can blow it up.
Esmeralda: Unfortunately, this emergency override will... well, it puts the Serpent into an aggressive state.
Navia: Are you saying that you're planning to make it angry?
Esmeralda: Technically... Yes. The Ruin Serpent is a tunneling machine. It was not originally designed for combat, though it is certainly capable.
Navia: Great. So we need to deal with a pissed-off robot snake that's the size of a whale. Okay. There's this open area on the outskirts of Poisson. I'll have the Spina get as much of our forces there as possible.
Navia: In the meantime, Esmeralda, what can you tell us about the Serpent's capabilities? Have you seen one before?
Esmeralda: Unfortunately not. Still, I remember reading about it in the documents in that old factory. Let me think...
Esmeralda: The Serpent has a massive gear on its head that allows it to dig through practically anything. We should probably avoid being in front of it.
Esmeralda: As for weaknesses, its main power cores are along its body. They are usually protected unless it is using a powerful attack. When it does, they will be exposed for a short time to gather the energy required.
Navia: Then that's when we strike. Thank you, Esmeralda. I'll mobilize the Spina. Meet us there as soon as you can.
Go to the marked location.
Navia: Great, you're here. The Spina's set up - our big guns are in place and the area has been evacuated. Are you ready?
Esmeralda: I have the broadcast ready. Once I activate it, the Serpent will be attracted and emerge. It will be very violent.
Esmeralda: And if it's possible, please try to leave the head intact. I'd like to take a look inside.
Navia: I'll try, but no promises. That thing needs to be destroyed, Esmeralda, and I can't risk letting it escape to cause more destruction.
Esmeralda: I understand. Are you ready, Aether?
Aether: I'm ready. / Not yet.
Cutscene start
Esmeralda takes a tentative step forward. "Let me see..." she says, "I'll begin the broadcast. If it's in range, it should arrive quickly."
You and Navia wait anxiously, alongside the Spina. In seconds, however, the ground begins to shake. Cracks appear beneath Esmeralda, but she is concentrating, and unaware.
Immediately, you leap at her, grabbing her and pulling her away. It is your reaction speed that saved her - the two of you had just managed to roll aside when the Ruin Serpent bursts forth from directly underneath and into the open.
"Now! Open fire!" Navia commands.
Cutscene end
Defeat the Ruin Serpent with the help of Navia and Esmeralda.
Esmeralda: That was way too close. You saved me again, Aether. Thanks.
Esmeralda: This is why I usually stay back and support others in fights. I'm not very good at being on the front line.
Navia: Well, thanks to you, Poisson is safe once more. The Spina is in your debt, Esmeralda.
Navia: I wonder how this machine got here, though. I've never heard of such a thing.
Esmeralda: I'm not sure either. Functional Ruin Serpents are exceedingly rare. I know of one in the Chasm, but none in Fontaine.
Esmeralda: But it was damaged. Maybe it had a fight that affected its systems, causing it to go haywire and end up here.
Esmeralda: Well, either that or someone managed to sabotage it and let it loose here to cause chaos. But even I couldn't control it, and I doubt there's anyone else who has the knowledge and capability to do so.
Navia: Speaking of which, that's an impressive visor. You used it to talk to the Serpent, right? Did you make it yourself?
Esmeralda: Well, I had some help from the Fontaine Institute, but mostly yes. It's not quite complete yet, though.
Esmeralda: Actually, I doubt it'll ever be fully complete. I have all kinds of features I want to add...
Navia: Sounds like you really know your stuff.
Aether: Yup, Esmeralda's the best at dealing with machinery.
Esmeralda: Hehe. Thanks, Aether.
Navia: Well, how would you like to work with the Spina someday? We could use your skills.
Esmeralda: Maybe one day. But not for a while. There are still some things I need to do.
Navia: I understand. Still, you're welcome here any time. Now, let's celebrate!
Ending 3: A Victory Hard Earned
The image is that of Aether, Esmeralda, and Navia standing in front of the wrecked remains of the Ruin Serpent. They are smiling at a job well done with members of the Spina Di Rosula. Esmeralda still seems a little shocked.
'A battle to celebrate, despite the near catastrophe.'
Path 4
(This section is Path 4 and assumes that the second choice is taken.)

Esmeralda: The Court of Fontaine. Where to now, Aether? Is there any place you want to go in particular, or shall we just walk around?
Aether: Let's take a stroll around. / If you see, anything interesting, just let me know.
Esmeralda: Sure. Let's go.
Walk with Esmeralda.
Esmeralda: Honestly, I haven't come here much ever since I came to Fontaine. Ever since you helped me get a Workshop at the Institute, I've been holed up in there working on my eyes.
Esmeralda: Oh! That reminds me, they made me an official researcher once I shared with them some system improvements for the Meks.
Esmeralda: Whoever was in charge of that before was not very thorough. I'm sure that he did his best, but he overlooked so many things. Did you know that the Mekafish they released to clear pollution just ended up killing all the fish?
Esmeralda: Clearing up that issue plus a bunch of others took just a simple upgrade to the Meks' logic systems, and they decided that I was good enough to join them.
Aether: Congratulations.
Esmeralda: Hehe, thanks.
Esmeralda: Oh, Katheryne's here too. Now that I think about it, isn't it strange how she's in every city, manning the Adventurer's Guild?
Aether: There's more than meets the eye. / Katheryne is not just what she appears.
Esmeralda: Yeah... There's something strange about her that I can't quite put my finger on. I should investigate more in the future.
Esmeralda: In the meantime, where were we? That looks like a blacksmith, but what's that machine there?
Aether: That's the Beaumont Workshop. / Shall we take a look?
Esmeralda: Let's check it out!
Estelle: Hello there, what can I help you with?
Esmeralda: Tell me about the machine there.
Estelle: Ah, this one? I'm very proud of it. This allows the ordinary me to forge weapons on par with those other muscled smiths.
Esmeralda: Weapon forging... That reminds me, Ariel did ask me to fix her weapon for her some time ago. On the other hand, it also reminded me that a lot of my personal machines were left in Liyue when I came over. Maybe I should do something about it.
Esmeralda: What do you think, Aether? Should I forge Ariel a new weapon first, or should I go get my stuff from Liyue?
(The following dialogue option determines the path of the event that is chosen. The current path is path 4, 5)
Aether: Let's fetch your things from Liyue. (Path 4)
Aether: Let's help Ariel make a new weapon. (Path 5)
(This section is Path 4 and assumes that the first choice is taken.)
Esmeralda: Alright. We need to go all the way back to Liyue. Hmm. That's quite far away.
Aether: Really? / You think?
Esmeralda: Shush, you. I wasn't planning on suddenly returning to Liyue, alright? Let's see...
Esmeralda: Daisy? No, she's busy, and it'll take quite long anyway. And I mentioned that I'll be fine without her for a while; I'm not going to call her for something like this.
Esmeralda: Legacy? It has the speed, but unfortunately, it's in the middle of maintenance now. Even if I told it to come now, it'll be a day or two before it's ready.
Esmeralda: Do you have any ideas, Aether?
Aether: How about we take an Antoine Roger Aircraft?
Esmeralda: Oh, one of those airships? Can we really just borrow one?
Aether: Sure, I know their creator. Let me just talk to him.
Go to Antoine's location.
Antoine: Traveler. Looking for a ride on my aircraft? And you are... Esmeralda, correct?
Esmeralda: Yes, I am. How do you know?
Antoine: You're the newest member of the Research Institute, right? It's always good to know your coworkers!
Esmeralda: Ah. Well, can we borrow one of your aircraft?
Antoine: Of course! Do take care of it, though. Where are you planning to go?
Esmeralda: There's a place in Liyue that I need to get to.
Antoine: Liyue? That's quite the distance.
Esmeralda: Can the airship make it?
Antoine: Of course it can make it! I'll have it prepared soon. Usually, there's a whole procedure to go through, but seeing as how the two of you are both members of the Institute, we'll skip it this time. Make sure to bring it back in one piece, alright?
Esmeralda: Of course! Thanks, Antoine!
Enter the airship.
The airship rises into the sky and begins making its way to Liyue. You and Esmeralda enjoy the scenery. Soon, it lands outside the factory.
Esmeralda: That was slower than Legacy, but much more relaxing. It's a lot quieter, and I get to look around without getting wind blasted in my face. Overall, not to bad.
Esmeralda: Now that we're here, let's get to work. Help me out, will you, Aether?
You spend some time helping Esmeralda pack her belongings, tools, and other equipment. It takes some time, but the two of you eventually put everything into a large crate and lock it tightly.
Esmeralda: Phew. All done.
Aether: That's quite a large crate. / I don't think it'll fit on the aircraft.
Esmeralda: Ah, that's fine. Legacy is on the way. It can carry this with no problem. We'll just have to wait for it to get here.
Esmeralda: ...
Aether: ...
Esmeralda: This is awkward. Do you have anything to talk about?
Aether: Do you prefer this place or your new workshop in Fontaine? / Which nation is your favorite? / What are you working on at the moment?
Esmeralda: Well, this factory is Khaenri'ah in origin, while the other one is Fontainian. I'm much more familiar with the first, and I've stayed here for a while, so I definitely do like this place more, though I'm sure I'll get used to the new one soon enough. / My favorite nation? I grew up in Sumeru, but I don't like how restrictive the Academia was at times. I was in Mondstadt for a while too; it was quite peaceful there, which was why I chose to stay there before I got my Vision. / My research? Currently, I'm still getting to understand Fontaine Technology better. I've been there for months, but most of that time was spent building my eyes.
Esmeralda: Still, I can't stay here forever. It's nice to have some changes once in a while, and the Research Institute is a good place for me to continue my studies. / Overall, I think I might like Fontaine the most. The technology there is simply incredible. Sometimes I feel like I should have headed there all that time ago, but then... Then I might never have met you back in Mondstadt. / The Arkhe energies, Pneuma and Ousia, that power the nation are certainly interesting. It could be quite an interesting alternative to the Leyline energy that I'm currently using. There's also Indemnitium, but information on it is hard to come by.
Esmeralda: Still, there is the small issue that I don't know anyone in Fontaine, apart from a few of the Researchers in the Institute.
Esmeralda: Maybe you could introduce me to some of your friends. I don't have many.
Aether: Of course. But there are people you can rely on, you know?
Esmeralda: Yes... That's true. I can rely on my friends - Amber, Ariel, Madam Faruzan, Dehya...
Aether: Aren't you forgetting someone?
Esmeralda: And you, of course, Aether. I... I really...
Esmeralda: Oh! Legacy's here. Let's go and ride a dragon!
Aether: I've done that before.
Esmeralda: Of course you have. Still... wanna join me?
Part 4 Ending: Moving Day
The image is that of Legacy, soaring over Fontaine with Esmeralda and Aether on its back carrying a crate in its arms. Aether has a smile and is holding onto Esmeralda's waist for support. She is grinning too and appears to be quietly freaking out at the physical contact.
'Using a massive robotic war machine to transport cargo... What a sight.'

(This section is Path 5 and assumes that the second choice is taken.)
(Path 4, 5)
(This section is Path 5 and assumes that the second choice is taken.)
This is path 4, 5.)
(Path 5)
(This section is Path 5 and assumes that the second choice is taken.)
Esmeralda: Alright. Hey, Estelle, can we borrow that machine for a while?
Estelle: What for? Are you trying to forge a weapon by yourself? If you have a blueprint, I can handle that for you.
Esmeralda: Hmm... Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not exactly sure what I should make. The last one I made was a Ruin Hunter's arm.
Esmeralda: Still, that one had plenty of issues. For one, it was ancient. For the new one, I think I should use a different material. Estelle, do you know any material that is both tough and malleable?
Estelle: Tough and malleable? Well, Condessence Crystals come to mind. They fit the criteria, but because they mostly form underwater, it's difficult to acquire some, and I'm afraid that I don't have any.
Esmeralda: Sounds like a good material. Do you know where I could get some?
Estelle: Here, I'll mark a location on the map. Careful, though - it's underwater and quite dangerous.
Esmeralda: No worries. Come on, Aether, let's go get some crystals.
Go to the marked location.
Collect 3 Pure Condessence Crystals and 3 Pure Crystal Chunks.
Esmeralda: That's all we need. Finally. Thanks for the help, Aether. If not for you, I'll be stuck here for a while.
Esmeralda: Usually I'd ask Daisy to smash the rocks apart, but she's not here right now. She'd be done with this in no time at all.
Esmeralda: Although... I'm not sure if she can handle going underwater. Probably not - she has too many exposed components that would break if she were submerged.
Esmeralda: Ah... She does a lot for me, you know? She carries me and my stuff around, beats things up for me, keeps watch... everything, really.
Esmeralda: It feels kind of odd without here here, actually. It feels quite... lonely. At least you're here, right, Aether?
Esmeralda: Ahem. Anyway, we need just one last thing, although it might be hard to find. The other materials will form the bulk of the weapon, but it needs an energy source to fuel its transformation.
Esmeralda: Last time, I used a modified energy core from a Ruin Guard, but those are not easy to come by, especially in Fontaine - I've barely seen any Ruin Machines.
Esmeralda: Do you have any ideas?
Aether: How about this?
Hand over the Arkhium Lumenite.
Esmeralda: This... What is it? Where did you get this?
Aether: It's called Arkhium Lumenite. / I forged it in an ancient forge.
Esmeralda: You made this? It's amazing! The amount of power stored in this shard is practically limitless. Can I really use it?
Aether: Of course.
Esmeralda: Thank you so much! Ok, I have some ideas. I'll need a few days to finalize my plans. I'll meet you back at the Blacksmith in two days, ok? See you soon!
Meet Esmeralda at the Beaumont Workshop in two days.
Esmeralda: Great, you're here. Right on time; I have the new design with me. What do you think, Estelle?
Estelle: This... I've never seen anything like it. Did you create it by yourself?
Esmeralda: Well, I had some help from some of the other Researchers from the Institute. But most of it was from my knowledge.
Estelle: The materials that you're using, and the machinery that is involved within the blade... I'm afraid that my machine cannot handle the requirements. To create something like this, you'll need a far more powerful forge.
Esmeralda: I was afraid of that. Aether, you mentioned that you forged the Arkhium Lumenite in an ancient forge, right? If it can create Arkhium Lumenite, it should work for this weapon.
Aether: I know where the forge is, but it was flooded after I used it last time.
Esmeralda: Flooded? That's unfortunate. Bring me there, Aether, and I'll see if there's anything I can do about it.
Go to Bravais' Press Works.
Esmeralda: Well, it's flooded alright. Let's go in and see what went wrong.
Explore the area.
Esmeralda: Look, that's one of the control panels. Let me take a look.
Esmeralda: I see. The automatic draining system is overloaded - water is being introduced more quickly than it can be pumped away.
Esmeralda: One of the seals must be ruptured. Aether, please fix it. I'll remain here and get the system back into working order.
Fix the leaking seal.
Esmeralda: Good work, Aether. Now that the seal is fixed, we should be able to drain the water from here.
Esmeralda activates the device, causing the water to drain.
Esmeralda: It worked! You've used this forge before, haven't you, Aether? Let's work together and build the greatest weapon that the world has ever seen. It's going to be amazing!
Path 5 Ending: A Grand Creation
The image is that of the Arkhium forge. Aether stands with Esmeralda as the forge operates, immense energies swirling around the raw materials. The two are shielding their eyes from the bright glare.
'In the depths of the world, a forge roars to life once more. Within it, the spirit of humanity burns.'
A/N: The new outfit in Path 2 will be expanded on in the next chapter.
It is unclear if the aquabuses are automatic or manually driven. I have assumed the latter.
Estelle's blacksmith machine had no name that I could find.
The properties of Arkhium Lumenite are unknown, so I made some up. It's also consumed to open a door in-game, which I find stupid. What kind of key only works once?
While listing Esmeralda's friends, I realized that she doesn't have many. Lore accurate, but still kind of sad.
Does Esmeralda have a crush on Aether? Yes. Will it go anywhere? Who knows?
