Chapter Seven : Wishful Thinking
As the morning mist draped itself over the cemetery of Konoha, Shisui Uchiha stood solemnly in front of a row of headstones, each marking the resting place of those dear to him. His gaze lingered on the tombstone of his parents, who had left the world too soon, then shifted to his grandparents, Kagami and his wife, whose stories had become legends in their own right within the Uchiha clan. Finally, his eyes settled on a stone that was both painfully familiar and hauntingly distant—the grave of Obito Uchiha, a brother he had never known.
The air around him was heavy, laden with the scent of dew and the lingering fragrance of incense left by previous visitors. Shisui let out a long, measured sigh, his breath visible in the cool air. "I know I carry not just the Uchiha name, but its future," he began, his voice barely above a whisper as if speaking to the spirits before him. "There's talk of civil war, and they look to me to quell it. To bridge the gap between our clan and the village."
He paused, closing his eyes for a moment, the weight of his responsibilities pressing down on him. "But the burden is heavy, and I fear... I fear failing to protect everything and everyone I love." His hands clenched into fists at his sides, the fear of not being able to fulfill his duty making his heart heavy.
As Shisui opened his eyes, he noticed a figure approaching through the mist—a familiar man with silver hair, his posture denoting a mix of respect and solemnity. Kakashi Hatake stopped a few paces away, his presence a silent support. For a long while, both stood in silence, sharing the grief and the heavy load of past and present.
Finally, Kakashi spoke, his voice soft but clear. "Obito changed my life profoundly," he confessed, his gaze fixed on Obito's grave. "I'm sorry I haven't been there for you, or for Naruto, as much as I should have. It's easy to get lost in one's regrets and responsibilities."
Shisui turned to look at Kakashi, a gentle smile curving his lips. "Thank you, Kakashi. I plan to honor Obito by ensuring Naruto has the life he deserves. From all the stories I've heard, Naruto and Obito are very much alike—brave, fiercely loyal, and maybe a bit too headstrong for their own good." His smile widened a little, warmth spreading through his tone.
Kakashi returned the smile, a rare, genuine expression that reached his eyes. "That sounds like something Obito would have wanted. To know that his spirit lives on in Naruto... it's more comforting than you might realize."
The two shared another moment of silence, the bond between them strengthened by their mutual respect and the unspoken commitments they had made—not just to their lost loved ones but to the future of the village and the young lives that were now in their hands.
As the sun began to rise, casting long shadows and golden light over the cemetery, Shisui and Kakashi departed together, their resolve renewed. They were different men from different generations of the same troubled clan, each carrying their past and their pain, yet both were determined to shape a future that would honor those who had gone before and protect those who were still to come.
⁂
Morning light streamed through the window, casting a warm glow across the room as Naruto, groggy and disoriented from another his vivid dreams, was abruptly awoken by Shisui's shove.
"Guahh!!!" The redhead screamed, as he face-plants on the ground. His face pressed uncomfortably against the cool floor, a reminder of Shisui's unique wake-up calls.
"Get up, you lazy brat. You're going to be late for the academy. I swear, your laziness is going to kill me one day," Shisui chided, a hint of amusement in his voice despite his stern words. He busied himself with making the bed, smoothing out the wrinkles in the sheets with practiced motions.
Naruto grumbled, pushing himself off the floor, his eyes squinting against the brightness of the day. "You know, there will come a day where you won't be able to push me out of bed anymore. I'll be so strong, that I'll be the one pushing you out of bed!" he retorted, his voice thick with sleep as he mock glared at his older brother.
"First, let's focus on your chakra molding problem. When the Rasengan don't explode in your face, then we'll see about becoming stronger than me," Shisui teased, offering his hand to help Naruto up.
"Don't you worry, Shisui, that day is coming sooner than you think!" Naruto declared, his tone brimming with confidence as he accepted Shisui's hand, pulling himself to his feet.
With a playful slap to the back of Naruto's head, Shisui chuckled. "It'll get here even faster once you get ready and go to the academy! You're just stalling now."
The room filled with a light-hearted energy as Naruto hurriedly changed into his attire: black pants paired with a long-sleeved dark gray shirt emblazoned with the Uchiha crest. He secured Shisui's old headband around his forehead and strapped on his shuriken and kunai pouches—gifts from Kakashi that included weight training seals and various shinobi tools.
Naruto's arsenal also boasted a personal gift from Itachi—a tanto, similar to Shisui's, which he kept proudly on his nightstand. Gai had contributed a set of Goken taijutsu training scrolls, and Iruka had given him a calligraphy set, acknowledging his interest in Fuinjutsu. Tenzo had gifted him a copy of *Tales of the Utterly Gutsy Ninja, and Hinata had presented him with a long, beautifully made red scarf, which, despite the warm weather, he cherished deeply.
As Naruto approached the academy, his thoughts lingered on Hinata and the brief but meaningful connection they had shared. Entering the classroom, he took his usual seat by the window. Shino Aburame was already there, offering Naruto a nod of acknowledgment as he sat down. Seeing Hinata two seats away, he waved happily. Suddenly she became flustered, her cheeks a soft red as she fiddled nervously with her fingers.
Outside the classroom he heard a nose, a commotion that grew louder, causing Naruto's attention towards the window. He saw a cloud of dust approaching, and soon, the figures of Ino and Sakura emerged, bickering loudly as they raced towards the building, each proclaiming their affection for Sasuke.
"That's enough!" Iruka's voice boomed as he entered, promptly restoring order. "Class is going to begin in a couple minutes. So why don't you two just calm down and pick a seat. And both of you sit away from Sasuke!"
The room settled down, and Naruto watched as Sasuke relaxed, a silent expression of relief crossing his features. Despite their differences, Naruto felt a flicker of sympathy for him—dealing with such fervent admirers was no easy task.
As class began, Naruto's thoughts briefly went towards his new friend he met the other day, Mabui. Though she would be leaving, he knew the impact of their friendship would linger, shaping both their futures in ways they might only realize with time.
⁂
Academy Grounds
As the lunch break began at the Ninja Academy, Iruka's voice cut sharply across the chatter of students, each busily engaged with their peers. "Alright, we're going to have a break, and then we'll be participating in some spars. Participation is mandatory, and no forfeiting. Got it, Shikamaru?" Iruka eyed the notoriously lazy Nara who was lounging back with a disinterested gaze.
Shikamaru merely grunted in acknowledgment, his eyes barely flickering towards Iruka, signaling his reluctant understanding.
The students dispersed to grab their lunches, converging into their usual cliques. Naruto, however, wasn't inclined to join any group. He preferred the solitude that allowed him to think and recharge away from others. Grabbing his packed lunch, he slipped out of a window and made his way to a serene spot under his favorite tree on the academy grounds. This quiet time was not only his escape from the noisy environment but also a precious opportunity to hone his skills.
Settling under the gentle shade of the tree, Naruto took a moment to enjoy the peace before diving into his lunch. With each bite, he flipped through the pages of a Fuinjutsu book that Fūka had given him. The art of seal mastery intrigued him deeply, resonating with his Uzumaki heritage known for their prowess in both Fuinjutsu and swordsmanship. As he read, he practiced forming the intricate seals described on the pages, dreaming of the day he'd master these techniques and perhaps discover other surviving Uzumaki.
Once lunch was over, Naruto didn't waste any time. He moved to the practice targets to refine his shuriken and kunai throwing techniques. The precision and power behind each throw had improved significantly, a testament to his diligent practice.
As he retrieved his thrown kunai from a target, he sensed a presence behind him and turned swiftly, causing Hinata, who had approached quietly, to let out a startled "Eep!"
"Oh hey, Hinata, I didn't mean to frighten you," Naruto said, noticing her blush deepening. "Is there anything you need from me?" he asked with genuine concern.
Hinata shuffled her feet, her fingers nervously twining together. "Umm, I was just wondering if you like the gift I gave you," she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The mention of the gift—a long, beautifully crafted red scarf—brought a bright smile to Naruto's face. "Oh yeah, it's so great, Hinata, thank you. Dang, I wish I had gotten something for you as well," he replied, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
Her eyes widen and suddenly yelled, "N-No! You've done enough!" Which through the redhead off, catching him by surprise.
"Hinata, what do you mean?"
Hinata took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. She then looked up at Naruto, her eyes filled with a mix of admiration and gratitude. "You've always inspired me, Naruto. When I was five years old, I ran away from home and you found me and gave me the courage to keep striving to be better," she confessed, moving closer to gently squeeze his hand.
Surprised by her closeness and the softness of her touch, Naruto felt a warm blush spread across his cheeks. Hinata quickly pecked his cheek, saying softly, "Thank you for being you."
Flustered but touched, Naruto stammered, "Uh, yeah, no problem, Hinata. For you, I'll always be there to help a friend out."
Silence ensued for a few moments before he blurted out, "Uh Hey, wanna go get ramen after school."
She laughed smiled brightly, nodding in the positive.
Their moment of connection was abruptly interrupted by Iruka's loud call from across the grounds. "Naruto, Hinata!" he shouted, his voice carrying across the field. "It's time for the spars!"
Both of them jolted, momentarily brought back to the reality of their ninja training. They shared a quick, embarrassed smile before heading back to join their classmates, their hearts lighter and steps a little quicker from the brief but meaningful exchange they'd shared under the tree.
Naruto and Hinata walked towards the sparring ring where most of the students were already gathered. They all formed a circle around the ring, and one by one Iruka started the spars. Most of them were civilian against civilian or clan against clan, except for when Kiba was put up against a brown haired Sasuke weirdo named Anzu, who beat Kiba to the ground with one punch after he insulted the raven haired Uchiha.
Iruka scanned his clipboard for the next match-up. His eyes settled on a particular pairing, and he called out clearly, "Next, we have Hinata Hyuga versus Sakura Haruno. Please step into the sparring circle."
Hinata's heart raced as she stepped forward, her gaze flickering towards Naruto who was watching intently. Seeing him among the crowd, a wave of determination washed over her. Today, she wanted to show him, more than anyone else, just how much she had grown.
Sakura, confident and ever so competitive, stepped up to the ring with a smirk. She glanced dismissively at Hinata, underestimating the quiet Hyuga heiress. "I'll defeat you in front of Sasuke, Hinata. Give up!" she taunted, assuming a combat stance.
Iruka signaled the start of the match. "Begin!"
The crowd fell silent, all eyes fixed on the two kunoichi. Sakura charged forward aggressively, aiming to end the match quickly with a series of punches. However, Hinata remained calm, her Byakugan activating, veins bulging near her temples, giving her a near 360-degree vision and the ability to see chakra points.
As Sakura's first punch came, Hinata sidestepped gracefully, using her Gentle Fist technique to tap Sakura's arm, momentarily disrupting her chakra flow. Sakura, surprised by the sudden numbness in her arm, faltered, but pressed on, throwing another punch with her other arm.
Hinata, now in her element, countered effortlessly, striking two more of Sakura's chakra points, causing Sakura's movements to slow. The crowd began to murmur, impressed by Hinata's control and technique.
"Your training has paid off, Hinata!" shouted Naruto from the sidelines, his voice full of excitement.
Emboldened by the support, Hinata continued her dance around Sakura, her strikes precise and debilitating. Each touch blocked Sakura's chakra pathways systematically, showcasing not only her mastery of the Gentle Fist but also her strategic acumen in combat.
Sakura, now clearly struggling, attempted to retaliate with a desperate charge. However, Hinata anticipated this move, stepping in close, her palms glowing with concentrated chakra. With a swift series of strikes, she targeted key chakra points on Sakura's shoulders and chest, effectively halting her momentum.
Sakura stumbled back, overwhelmed and outmatched, her breath heaving as she tried to regain her bearings. Hinata stood calmly, her stance ready but her eyes soft, showing no gloating but rather a quiet confidence.
"Iruka-sensei, I believe Sakura is unable to continue," Hinata stated respectfully, not wanting to embarrass her opponent further.
Iruka nodded, stepping forward. "The match goes to Hinata Hyuga for superior technique and control. Well done, Hinata." He raised her hand in victory, and the crowd erupted in cheers, many surprised by the display of strength from the often overlooked Hyuga.
Naruto clapped loudly, his eyes wide with respect and a newfound appreciation for Hinata's strength. "Wow, Hinata, that was awesome!" he yelled over the crowd, his voice carrying his genuine admiration.
Hinata, her cheeks flushed with a mix of exertion and shyness, looked over at Naruto, her heart swelling with pride. Today, she had not only won a spar but had also stepped out from the shadows, proving her strength and her resolve to everyone, especially to Naruto.
Finally came the spar that for some unknown reason to any of the kids always happened
"Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, please step into the ring."
The lilac eyed redhead and the black eyed Uchiha both stepped into the ring, the latter glaring at the former. Whenever they sparred he was embarrassed especially infront his brother and cousin Shisui. Naruto training with brother also made him more angry than he already was. They both made the seal of confrontation, and a second later Iruka shouted "Begin!"
Sasuke began running towards Naruto with the most speed he could manage, intent on putting down his only obstacle to being the top student in the academy. He sent a fist to Naruto aimed for his face, and Naruto quickly stepped to the side. Naruto grabbed the arm that Sasuke had extended, spun himself around with the other boy, and threw Sasuke to the other end to the ring. Naruto could have thrown him out of the ring, and therefore won the match easily, but he knew that that would only anger him more. So no choice other than to give him a bit of what he wanted.
Sasuke twisted himself in the air and landed quite gracefully, and took off once again at the blond. He threw a punch with his right fist, this time aimed for Naruto's abdomen, which Naruto swatted away with his left arm. While Naruto was doing that, Sasuke smirked while he brought his left foot for a kick, and was surprised when Naruto blocked that as well with his other arm.
'Damn,' Sasuke thought as he took a small leap away from Naruto, Sasuke grew a little more angry at that, and once again charged Naruto, hoping that he could overwhelm Naruto with either strength or speed.
Sasuke came at his enemy with everything he had, pushing himself harder and harder to try and finish him. And by every passing second, he grew more frustrated at the fact that he couldn't seem to touch the redhead. They were both using the Uchiha interceptor fist, so why was it that Naruto wasn't having any trouble fighting him? He had used the clan's taijutsu ever since before the academy, there shouldn't be any reason that this Uchiha wannabe could use it so flawlessly.
"Come on Sasuke, stop holding back! CHAA!" one pink haired cheerleader screamed, irking the blond girl next to her. "Don't listen to her Sasuke, I'm the one that'll cheer for you! GET HIM!" she screamed in response. Soon enough, the entire female population of the class, save one dark blue haired girl, were screaming their words of infatuation and encouragement.
Naruto, throughout this whole ordeal, had been fairly focused and calm. Three years ago, not only would he have been beaten by Sasuke before he could even know what happened, but would have grown upset and jealous at everyone cheering for his opponent rather than him. But now, the only thing Naruto felt in this situation was annoyance that none of his classmates were taking this seriously. Naruto wouldn't lie and say he was the most mature person, but they were training to be shinobi dammit. This wasn't a popularity contest, it was training for situations where it would be a fight to the death.
Deciding that he had been at this long enough, Naruto went in, finally going on the offensive. Naruto ran towards the raven haired pain in the ass and took a leap as his leg extended. Sasuke smirked as he saw the kick coming, knowing that he could easily counter it. Sasuke put his hands up can caught the foot before it could kick him away. Sasuke was smiling more that he normally did, but that stopped when he saw Naruto's own smile. Before Sasuke could do anything about it, Naruto had used his free leg to kick Sasuke in the face while his hands were occupied, freeing himself of the Uchiha clan prince while said Uchiha went flying away a couple of meters and out of the ring.
"Naruto Uzumaki wins the match!" Iruka shouted over the screams of the many females screaming at Naruto, most saying that he definitely cheated or that there's no way that Sasuke had given this spar his all. Naruto had grown used to these shouts and claims from the many times he and Sasuke had sparred. If his memory served correctly, this made it 16-13 in Naruto's favor.
Not that Naruto had counted all the spars that he and Sasuke had ever had. That'd be ridiculous. It was just a habit he had picked up when his only goals were to beat Sasuke and become hokage. Back then, the scores had been drastically different, more around 10-0 in Sasuke's favor. But Naruto had quickly caught up and surpassed Sasuke.
'DAMMIT, how is he this strong!? I'll never be able to prove myself to Father if I can't even beat this non-Uchiha!'
Sasuke was trembling as his thoughts grew angrier and angrier, while Naruto merely walked over the fallen student, and held down his hand in a silent offer to help Sasuke up. Black eyes met shining lilac, and Sasuke swatted Naruto's hand away and stood up, walking away from the redhead as his fists clenched.
"Alright, everyone back in the classroom, we still have lessons"
Needless to say, most of the students groaned.
Academy Main Entrance
As the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the grounds of the Ninja Academy, Shisui found himself tapping his foot impatiently, a rare sign of his growing agitation. Beside him, Itachi stood quietly, his expression weary, his eyes scanning the crowd of students emerging from the academy gates. They were waiting for Naruto, but as they watched, Shisui couldn't help but overhear the murmurs and whispers that fluttered through the crowd like malicious butterflies.
Every pointed stare and hushed comment directed at Naruto as he walked out only served to stoke the fires of frustration within Shisui. The whispers grew louder as parents reunited with their children, many throwing disdainful glances towards Naruto, criticizing his latest sparring victory over Sasuke. It seemed no matter how hard Naruto tried, he couldn't shake the village's deep-seated prejudice against him. They still saw him as the Kyuubi, although the beast was no longer part of him.
"And these are the people we're supposed to protect," Shisui muttered under his breath, his voice tinged with bitterness. Itachi, ever the silent observer, merely nodded, understanding the complexity of their duty versus the reality of their situation.
Naruto's voice suddenly cut through the crowd, a beacon of youthful enthusiasm. "Shisui!" he called out, his eyes lighting up as he spotted his brothers. He jogged over, his earlier trials at the academy momentarily forgotten in the safety of family. "Thanks for picking me up, but I actually have to meet Hinata at Ichiraku's. Is it okay if I do that?"
Shisui couldn't help but smile, the tension easing from his shoulders as he remembered the scarf Hinata had given Naruto. "That should be fine, Naruto. Just make sure you two don't blow something up on your date," he teased, winking at Naruto to drive the jest home.
Naruto's face turned a spectacular shade of red. "W-WE'RE NOT DATING YOU IDIOT!" he yelled, loud enough to draw curious and amused looks from nearby families. Itachi and Sasuke, who had been trying to maintain a low profile, stepped discreetly away from the suddenly too-loud Naruto, exchanging a knowing look.
"Maybe not now, Naruto, but just give it time," Shisui chuckled, giving Naruto a gentle push towards his plans. "Now run along, if you're going to hang out with Hinata, then I have some errands I can run."
Grumbling but not entirely displeased, Naruto darted off towards his rendezvous, leaving Shisui and Itachi alone. Once Naruto was out of earshot, the brothers shared a solemn nod. "Now, time to prepare for the Kotoamatsukami," Itachi murmured, referring to their secret, weighty task involving one of the Uchiha's most potent and dangerous techniques.
Unbeknownst to them, hidden within the shadows of the nearby trees, a figure draped in a black hooded cloak watched the exchange with intense, unseen eyes. The figure, marked by distinctive red hair, quietly observed the brothers before vanishing as silently and mysteriously as they had appeared, their own agenda unknown and their presence a silent testament to the brewing storms that lay ahead.
⁂
Ichiraku's Ramen Stand
Naruto nervously perched on a stool at the counter of Ichiraku Ramen, his fingers intertwined as he occasionally glanced toward the entrance. Although Hinata was barely a minute late, an inexplicable anxiety seemed to grip him, causing his gaze to flit back and forth between the door and the wall clock.
"Looks like someone's getting nervous," teased Ayame from the other side of the counter as she and her father prepared the day's noodles. "Is someone a little fidgety for their date today?"
Naruto shot Ayame a playful glare, ready to retort that it wasn't a date, when a mischievous thought struck him. "Oh, yeah? And how's asking Shisui out going for you?" he replied with a smirk, taking delight in the sudden blush that colored Ayame's cheeks.
"I-It's not my fault there's never a good time to bring it up! He's always so busy!" Ayame exclaimed, her embarrassment causing her voice to rise a notch, drawing a chuckle from her father, Teuchi, who watched the exchange with an amused grin.
"Well, he should be at the house, probably preparing for a mission. Alone," Naruto added, emphasizing the last word with a wink, which only intensified Ayame's blush. "I don't think there could possibly be a better time to set a date with him. Or are you too busy?"
As Ayame sputtered incoherently, Naruto exchanged a knowing look with Teuchi, who nodded in agreement and decided to join the playful scheme. "Ayame isn't busy at all, right Ayame?" Teuchi chimed in, his tone teasing. As Ayame struggled to respond, Teuchi delivered the final push. "In fact, take the rest of today and tomorrow off, Ayame! A girl as young as yourself shouldn't be wasting her time with her old father when the love of her life is all by himself. You have your whole life to make ramen, but you might only have a moment with Shisui!"
"W-WHAT! I never said he was the love of my life! You guys are just making this up now!" Ayame protested, her ladle waving dramatically in the air.
Naruto intervened with a stern, encouraging tone. "Hey! Don't ever say that about yourself, Ayame! Any shinobi worth their kunai would be lucky to have you, and appreciate it every day!" Seeing Ayame soften, he added, "And if you really need to know, the only reason Shisui hasn't asked you out himself is because he doesn't know how to act around one particular ramen chef he likes."
Ayame's eyes lit up with a mixture of surprise and joy. "You really mean that!?" she asked, leaning closer to Naruto, who simply nodded with a grin.
Without another word, Ayame dashed over the counter and sprinted out of the stall, her apron still tied around her waist as she ran toward the Uchiha compound.
Just as Ayame disappeared, Hinata walked into the stall, her eyes wide with confusion at the sight of the fleeing ramen chef. "Um... Where's she running off to?" Hinata inquired, her gentle voice filled with curiosity.
"Nowhere," replied both Naruto and Teuchi in unison, sharing a chuckle over the sudden departure which caused Hinata to sweat drop.
With the excitement settling down, Naruto turned his full attention to Hinata. "Let's order something good," he suggested with a warm smile. They decided on three bowls of miso ramen with extra beef each. The day, indeed, was fun to say the least.
Uchiha Compound
In the quiet of their shared home, Shisui lay sprawled on the couch, a pillow cradling his head, his gaze fixed on the ceiling above. His mind was a whirlpool of thoughts, a mix of strategy and concern for the mission that loomed only hours away. Itachi, seated beside him, flipped through the pages of "The Tale of the Utterly Gutsy Ninja," a book penned by the legendary Sannin, Jiraiya. The room was steeped in a tense calm before Itachi broke the silence.
"So I heard Naruto beat Sasuke again in a taijutsu match at the academy," Itachi remarked, setting the book aside, a slight arch to his brow suggesting his interest in the topic.
Shisui's eyes shifted from the ceiling, falling on the familiar walls that had surrounded him for the entirety of his eighteen years. This house, passed down from his brother Obito, held the ghosts of a family he barely knew—echoes from a past colored by heroism and tragedy.
"Yeah, it's going well," Shisui responded, his voice carrying a lightness that belied the depth of his reflections. "Naruto's really gotten the hang of the interceptor fist. He's been working tirelessly, almost like it's second nature now. Still, he has a ways to go before reaching our level," he added with a half-smile, trying to inject some levity into the heavy atmosphere.
Itachi nodded slightly, "And his shurikenjutsu and kenjutsu? How are those coming along? I hope the tanto I gave him isn't just gathering dust."
Shisui chuckled, appreciating Itachi's concern for their younger brother's progress. "Naruto's doing okay with the tanto, though he naturally gravitates towards shuriken and kunai. His kenjutsu... well, it's not his strong suit, but he's familiarizing himself with it."
"That's good enough. Not all shinobi need to excel in kenjutsu to be effective," Itachi reasoned, his tone even, reflective. "What about his ninjutsu and genjutsu?"
"Ninjutsu's going strong; he's nailed the basics and the Great Fireball Jutsu after much practice. Genjutsu, though, is a different story. It's his weakest area, and frankly, it's stressing me out just thinking about it," Shisui admitted with a wry smile. "He's still hiding his secret training sessions from me, but I suspect it's because of his unusually dense chakra."
Itachi listened intently, his eyes reflecting a mix of pride and concern. "Persistence like that will serve him well. He might even surpass us sooner than we expect," he remarked thoughtfully.
Their conversation turned towards more personal reflections. Shisui pondered the legacy of his family—ordinary lives marked by brief flashes of heroism. His father, a chunin who died saving others without ever seeking glory, and his mother, who passed away giving life to him. These stories shaped Shisui's understanding of duty and sacrifice—values he saw reflected in Naruto's own journey.
Itachi looked towards Shisui and thought of the brewing tensions within the Uchiha clan and the village's political landscape. "How are you handling everything?" he asked, his voice laden with genuine concern.
Shisui sighed, a mix of frustration and resignation in his voice. "Handling it? It's a mess, Itachi. There's talk of revolt within the clan, and now, the elders and their foundations might be using my brother to advance their agendas. It's enough to make me want to walk away from it all."
"But I won't. For Naruto," Shisui continued, his voice firm with resolve. "He sees the Uchiha clan as his family, as his home. It gave him a sense of belonging when he had none. Whatever happens, I'll stand by the clan, if only to ensure Naruto can continue to be proud of his heritage."
Itachi nodded, understanding the depth of the bond between Shisui and Naruto—a bond that transcended blood, bound by shared struggles and dreams.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door, and both Shisui and Itachi looked over, very confused. It was not often that they had visitors, and they couldn't feel a chakra signature off the person at the door, most likely meaning that they were a civilian.
Civilians never visited them.
The two of them walked towards the door, Itachi sticking to walls and roof so as to hide in a position where if need be, he could jump in and assist him with the potentially hostile enemy. They reached the door, and once Shisui was certain that Itachi was hidden, and his left hand could easily reach a kunai if necessary, he opened the door.
"Hey there Shisui!" Ayame said, a little too suddenly and loudly, which startled Shisui ever so slightly, causing him to almost grab a kunai from his pouch. Once he knew who it was, he calmed down immensely. "Hey Ayame, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at the shop?" He replied, confused at why she was off work.
"Father gave me a couple days off for… ummmm… working hard the past couple of days, that's it!" Ayame said as Shisui mentally put his hand on his face, while Itachi actually did. They had both learned by now that Ayame was a terrible liar, and it showed. But that was one of the things Shisui liked about her.
"Well why don't you come in, I'll make us some tea. I'm sure you're here to talk about something, and that always goes better with some green tea." Shisui said as he lead her inside the house, walking with her towards the main room after she had taken her shoes off. Itachi remained hidden, opting to figure out what Ayame was here for. It couldn't possibly be what he thought it might be, could it?
Ayame on the other hand, was freaking out. She had been so prepared to just say what she wanted to say quickly and get it over with. But by Shisui inviting her in and making her tea, her plan was being thrown out the window. Now he was going to ask her what she was here for, and she would have to summon the courage to reply to that question by asking for a date.
This was going to be much more difficult than she thought it would be twenty minutes ago.
Ayame was sat down in the main room, watching Shisui prepare the tea through a window to the kitchen, and smiled at the sight. This was an awfully domestic thing to do for a ninja who was feared throughout the entire continent. Although he seemed to be having trouble making it, and when she saw the fire erupt, she ran in and tried her best to help.
"OH MY GOD OH MY GOD, WHAT DO I DO!?" Shisui screamed, looking very frightened at the fire, not something Ayame would expect from Shisui of the Body Flicker. She quickly looked around and saw a fire extinguisher, and grabbed it. She pointed the handle towards the fire, and shot the extinguisher at the fire, also getting Shisui a bit in the process.
When the fire was out, Shisui at least looked very sorry and embarrassed at the situation. Rubbing the back of his head, Ayame noting that it must have been something he picked up from Naruto, he gave her the most awkward smile she had ever seen.
"What happened?" Ayame asked, confused at how the fire had originated. Shisui just looked to floor, even more ashamed of how the fire came to be. He eventually said something, although too quietly for the ramen chef to actually hear him. "I'm sorry, what did you say Shisui?"
"... I tried boiling water." He said again, his cheeks reddening at the embarrassing event. Ayame just stared at the boy just a couple years older than her, blinking every so often, before she had to hold back a laugh. It slowly became harder and harder to hold it in, and soon enough, she could be heard laughing from across the street.
"Is this why you and Naruto eat out so much?" Ayame said while holding her stomach, her abdomen aching from how hard she was laughing. Shisui could be seen rubbing his head even more, giving his own embarrassed laugh at the situation. "Yea, I'm no good at cooking. If Naruto and I ever eat in, he's usually the one cooking for us. He's better than you would think."
Ayame continued laughing for at least another minute, Shisui's blush only getting heavier the longer she remained laughing. From his hiding spot, Itachi was smiling much more than usual, glad that the two had found each other. But taking a look at the clock hanging on the wall, he decided that he should probably be heading back to his own house, so as to not raise any more suspicion about what was going to occur in only a couple hours. He would have to find out whether or not Ayame and Shisui would be going on a date later, when he and Shisui met back up.
"Here, why don't we just go back to the living room? I'm sure you didn't come here just to see me burn down the house." Shisui said to Ayame, causing the girl to mellow a little due to the fear of what she came to ask. The two of them walked to the main room, Ayame rubbing her right arm with her left in her own sign of nervousness. They sat on the couches, Shisui waiting for Ayame to start speaking. They sat for a brief moment of silence before Ayame actually started to speak.
"So Shisui, I was kind of wondering if maybe… I don't know, you might want to…Ummm… So you're single, and I'm… I just think that we should… Go…On… A… A… Date."
Shisui had been confused by Ayame's sudden nervousness, but when she had finished her question, he had completely understood. His eyes widened, his body became stiff, and he could feel himself starting to perspire. He awkwardly brought up his hand to the back of his head, and began his own stuttering.
"W-Well, that would b-be g-good, yea. I m-mean, that's only if you a-are really s-sure that you would want to g-go out with me." Shisui stated, his blush taking over the majority of his face while he looked off to the side to avoid eye contact with the Ayame. Ayame on the other hand, light up at Shisui's response.
"R-Really!? You want to go out with me!? Like, on a real date!?" Ayame shouted at Shisui, her shy and timid attitude quickly being replaced by a happy smile and voice. Shisui looked back at the girl, and gave her his own smile. Shisui decided to sum up his shinobi courage, relaxed his shoulders, and let out a slow calming breath through his nose.
"Ayame, I would very much like to go on a date with you." He said, with a soft smile and kind eyes that made Ayame's blush even more prominent on her face. Shisui was very clearly a handsome man, but when he wasn't busy being so serious looking, it was enough to make any girl's heart stop beating.
"So, is tomorrow good? I can pick you up at around, let's say 7 o'clock?" Shisui said, breaking Ayame out of her trance.
"Good, yea, that's good, that's very, very good. I think that would work very well." Ayame responded, trying to calm herself down from the high that was having a date with Shisui.
"Great, I look forward to it." Shisui said, his smile still plastered on his face. As she walked away deliberately seductively, Shisui stared at her butt and had a slight nose bleed. 'Uhh... Okay,' Shisui thought, 'maybe this day isn't totally bad.'
⁂
Hours Later
After a satisfying meal of ramen, Naruto and Hinata lay back on the grass in one of the village's quieter training grounds, catching their breath after a rigorous session of shurikenjutsu and sparing. They watched the stars twinkling in the night sky, the cool grass a soothing balm against their heated skin.
"Hey Hinata," Naruto broke the silence, turning his head to gaze at her. "Do you know what your dream is? I was talking to the old man the other day, and he says that all great shinobi have a dream."
Hinata turned to meet his gaze, considering the question. It was a topic her father often pressed upon her, but she rarely had an answer that felt genuine until now. "I think my dream," she began thoughtfully, her eyes drifting back to the stars, "would be to bring peace. Like my parents, I want to be a diplomat. I want to solve conflicts without fighting, without losing lives."
Naruto listened intently, his eyes reflecting the stars above them. The concept of achieving peace through words rather than warfare resonated with him deeply. It was a noble dream, and it made him respect Hinata even more.
"What about you, Naruto? Do you know what your dream is?" Hinata's voice pulled him from his thoughts.
That question had become more complicated for Naruto over the years. There was a time when he would have instantly said he wanted to be Hokage, to be acknowledged by everyone in the village. But now, his ambitions felt more personal, less about the title and more about the people he cared for.
"I want to be the best ninja I can be, to make my family and loved ones proud," Naruto said sincerely, his voice carrying a certainty that surprised even him. "And... I want a big family. That's all I truly want."
Hinata's eyes widened slightly, then softened with a warm smile. They lay there in comfortable silence, each lost in their thoughts. Hinata often envied Naruto for having Shisui, a brother figure who genuinely cared for him. She longed for a similar connection, feeling the gap with her own sister growing wider with each passing day.
As the night deepened, Hinata decided it was time to head home. She stood, brushing off grass from her clothes, and Naruto quickly followed. "I think I have to go now," she said, a hint of reluctance in her voice.
Naruto's expression fell for a moment, but he quickly recovered with a smile. "Yeah, that's probably a good idea. I'm really glad we got to spend time together. Let's do it again soon," he said, his tone formal yet sincere.
Hinata chuckled softly at his formality, a sign of his lingering nervousness. "Don't be so sad. We're definitely going to spend more time together," she reassured him, her voice gentle.
In a spontaneous moment of affection, Naruto pulled her into a hug, which Hinata returned warmly. As she stepped back, she gave him a quick peck on the cheek, leaving Naruto with a flustered but happy expression.
With a light laugh and a wave, Hinata walked off toward her home, leaving Naruto alone in the training grounds. He sat back down, not quite ready to leave the peace of the night sky. As he stared up at the moon, he felt a sense of calm. Despite the complexities of life and the burdens of dreams, moments like these brought clarity and peace, reminding him of the simple joys of friendship and the beauty of a quiet night.
Naruto decided to take a leisurely walk through the quiet walkways of the clans' district admiring the beautiful full moon in all its glory on this night. He made it past the two Hyūga guarding the main gate and was walking along one of the compound's long perimeter walls. He realized it was already almost midnight according to the bright full moon overhead.
As he walked in silence, he heard rustling in the woods nearby him, and clangs of metal that sounded like kunai hitting each other. Naruto turned to where the sounds originated, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. He was about to turn back around, when he heard the sounds again, this time with some movement being made by some bushes and trees. Naruto pulled out his own kunai, deciding to investigate the strange happenings.
Walking over cautiously, holding his kunai in a firm reverse grip, he passed by a few trees and continued a bit into the forest of the training grounds. Naruto saw some kunai marks in the tree, as well as some of the kunai stuck in the trees as well as littered on the ground of the forest. Then out of nowhere, he saw something from the corner of his eye, and turned to deflect a kunai that would have hit him right in the face. The kunai hitting each other cause a loud metal clang to sound all throughout the forest, and with it, Naruto's eyes widened.
Naruto ran quickly behind a tree, recognizing that the sound had most likely given away his position to any fighting shinobi in the area. He tried to control his breathing, making it quieter, and trying to slow down his heart.
Naruto stayed still, keeping the kunai ready in his hand and listening to every sound he could. He heard nothing except the wind against his ears and the leaves of the trees rustling with it. Suddenly, Naruto heard all the birds in the tree he was hiding behind fly away… at the same time.
Before Naruto could even act, he was kicked in the head by one of the mystery shinobi, flying away a couple feet before he was tied up very quickly and blindfolded. His hands and feet were tied separately, and soon he was being carried away through the forest. Naruto could hear others beside the person running with him, and he thought he heard someone following a little way behind. Of course, it was hard to tell with the painful thumping in his head.
Soon enough, Naruto could feel the person carrying him descend from the tree branches down the ground. He could hear the wind rustling again, and soon the others could also be heard, including the one that Naruto suspected was behind the group.
"Stand down, or the Jinchuriki gets it." The man said as Naruto felt a kunai pressed against his neck, almost hard enough to draw blood. Naruto would have cried out to the strange person the man keeping him tied up was talking to, but he was afraid that even if he breathed to much that his neck would be slit. He was far too scared to even think about what Jinchuriki might mean.
Naruto could hear the feet of the someone in front of him shuffle, and the kunai being held against his throat was pressed just a little bit harder. Then, he felt the hold on him loosen, before they fell toward the ground, as he heard the other bodies around him fall as well. Naruto hit the ground with a thud, the second time that had happened today. The ties on Naruto's hands and feet were suddenly cut off, and soon the rest of his body was free. He reached up and grabbed the blindfold around him and pulled it off to see,
"B-Brother?"
Shisui was kneeled on the ground looking at Naruto, his eyes looking at the younger boy with the saddest expression Naruto had ever seen on him. Various scratches and spots of dirt were seen on his person, indicating that he had been in a fight, as well as the fact that his hitai-ate was fairly lopsided. His fully matured sharingan was active as well, the frightened expression on his face looking out of place due to the fierce look of the doujutsu.
"I-I'm... so sorry Naruto." Shisui said to his brother, his red eyes tearing up as he closed his eyes tight, letting some of the water trail down his face. "I-I've failed Naruto, I-I'm sorry. But I couldn't save them."
"Exactly right Shisui, but you can still help this village." A voice said from behind Naruto, who spun around to see the entrance of the new figure. Out of the forest walked a man with a bandaged right eye and forehead, shaggy black hair, long dark robes, and a fairly distracting scar on his chin. He walked with a cane in his left hand, though Naruto got the sense that he didn't need it.
Danzo has made his move...
