Chapter 8 borrowed finery
I do not own the Pender wicks. All rights belong to Jean Birdsong.
All right, we are now in chapter 8 of my rewritten version of the Pender Wicks Summer. We're almost halfway through the story there are still a few more chapters left to go, obviously, but the story will be closing sooner or later. This is a big deal chapter I might accidentally add chapters into the story, too. I will have to borrow the final chapter work just like the story canon, but I'll probably change things up because I'll probably have a secret sequel chapter to this. That doesn't go with the normal round of chapters. That'll make the story a little longer than it is, just like the prologue, but I'll tell you about that chapter later this isn't it this is a canon chapter, so let us continue with it.
Let's begin this chapter now
We begin with Elizabeth, taking her daughters to visit Jeffrey at the big house. Or the mansion.
Come on girls Rosalyn said, urging her sisters we are headed to the house to visit Jeffrey. The girls were arguing like always except for Baddie and Rosalyn and their mother Elizabeth.
Are you all going in such a hurry Martin said as he looked at his wife we're headed to the house. We're gonna go visit the mansion and visit Jeffrey that sounds like fun. He says hound and I will stay here of course dear. We'll see you in a little while.
Don't embarrass us Baddie Sky said she came into the room. Why was Scott? Why would Betty embarrass us dear her mother said she's so little and likes to cry about everything guy says she's annoying now now girls' church has invited us to come over and have gingerbread we shall be thankful that she is doing this why Mrs. Tipton isn't around their mother reassured them. She also told me that she's not gonna be home for a while so we should take this opportunity to be on our best behavior. Yes, mother, they all said.
Good, she said, as she felt bad in her shoes come on let us go now that the morning is fresh. She said she took the little one by the hand with the help of Rosalind Sky, and Jane followed as they walked out the door and waved goodbye to their father will be back soon Martin take your time girls he said.
And you won't miss us for lunch don't worry it'll be fine. He says good cause he might have to do some other things too. Elizabeth said, but will be back in a little bit. He smiled as they left.
Then they met at the pavilion at the little table nearby. It was a beautiful Greek pavilion as they walked by it was church she was standing outside, and Jeffrey was sitting there waiting for them to arrive Jane and Skye fell over who was gonna sit beside Jeffrey Rosaland put bad between her and her mother was spaced them out a little bit. Good morning churchy Elizabeth said good morning Mrs. Pender Swick. She said it's nice to see you, ma'am. It's nice to see you too. She said in a cheerful voice.
Look what I got a treat for all of you she said, pulling out gingerbread here you go I brought out some delicious gingerbread for all of you. I'm good at that. She says baking is one of my strongest and gingerbread is my best. As Rosalyn and the baddie's mother both cut off pieces for Bad to eat gingerbread daddy's mouth as she ate is delicious. They said thank you, dear. She said it's always good to know that I do well with my cooking and baking. She says Really good. Jane said yeah agreed sky said even though Sky hardly ever agrees with anything church is good at baking things. Jeffrey said she's been more of a mother to me since my old mother's such a pain he said.
She sounds like it, Jane said, sky smiled and said the same.
And I hope you'll like it my gingerbread that is the church she said wait till you taste the birthday cake I'm making for next week, birthday Jane asked.
Well, Jefferies's, of course, it's his 11th birthday dinner turkey she said.
Churchy Jeffrey said still embarrass me I have to, dear. She says I'm more like a mother than your mother ever would be she says, hugging him reaching over between the two girls to hug him.
How old is he turning? Mrs. Pender asked well Elizabeth he's turning 11 in church. She said congratulations 11 is a big number. You're getting close to 12 which brings you close to being a teenager she says.
And I have big dreams he says I wanna be a musician, but my mother won't allow it. He says that is not very good. The suppressing your child's needs and dreams. I want my children to succeed in anything they want even though my husband is a professor. Well, that is a good motive to have Elizabeth thank you churchy Mrs. Pender Swick said.
If you have dreams of being whatever it is, you want to be Mrs. Pender Swick said you should fill them a parent should not suppress their child's dreams. She says they should encourage your mother. Wouldn't like you saying those things. Oh well if I ever met your mother, I will tell her to her face that's our mother. Jane said feisty and puts anything she wants that she believes in front of anyone.
What is it that you want to do? I want to be a musician. He says I want to conduct someday if I make it through all my studies of music I wanna conduct my own Orchestra and be ahead of that at one point or another.
That's a nice dream to have. She says I like it. It sounds simple but then not simple. You know music is hard to proceed. I know Jeffrey says, but if I work hard, maybe I can that's the spirit she says.
No, what about this party? How's it gonna be proceeded at? It'll be in the formal dining hall. Church says explaining it to Mrs. Pender Swick. It won't be out here or in the kitchen she says.
If it was just a few of you, I would have you in the kitchen. I have so many different stoves and things there she says, and there were and there's lots of butcher tables and things like that in the kitchen. It's a professional kitchen she says, and I love it very much.
Sounds amazing Mrs. Pinder said Massey, of course after eating after she ate her fill of gingerbread, she wiped her hands on her napkin and told the other girls and Jeffrey to watch Baddie please don't worry I am the OP the oldest event of oldest available Pendu now for the time being Rosalyn said I will watch baddie, good girl. I'll be back in a minute.
As soon as she was gone, there was a fight amongst the sisters now girls Rosalyn said do stop fighting amongst ourselves please you're gonna upset Betty and make her cry.
Jane apologized right away sorry Roslyn sorry buddy that gave a thumbs up to Jane knowing that she was also one of her favorites of the group but the guy just glared at her Jeffrey also gave a thumbs up to the little girl. Sorry, bad. Sorry buddy will try not to argue so much. It's OK. Baddie says it's you. I don't like it's not you that I don't like it's my it's the sky. She says what have I done to you she says with a grumpy face now sky Jane said we should set a better example for her.
You're right, Rosalyn.
meanwhile, in the kitchen
I wanted to talk to you alone church she said to Mrs. Pender Swick what about she asked well it's about the birthday party. I want to invite the girls or Jeffrey wants to invite the girls to the party, but there's a little problem and we'll have to talk to the girls about it when we get back outside as she spoke to her she couldn't help but look around herself. Elizabeth didn't notice how big the kitchen was and there were so many different different kinds of ovens and butcher tables and things like she said there was a church. She said there were a lot of these things this is a grand kitchen. She said the island was in the center, and there were other things in the kitchen.
It's a lot bigger than their kitchen in Massachusetts and Cameron, where they grew up and lived where the girls grew up and lived and stuff I mean, it was a mansion after all.
So what were you talking about? She said as she looked back, not distracted that the girls would need formal wear for this party. Don't have to dress in dresses. We didn't bring any. We didn't expect that we would need any dresses especially fancy ones that's OK. She said I have an idea. We should go to the attic soon. There's a lot up there .
We can go get them now Mrs. Pender Swick said as she walked back out with churchy girls we have an idea and something we need to tell you about the birthday party. What about it? We need more wear. Her mother said we didn't bring any formal wear dresses with us Jane said that's too bad. Jeffrey said you can't come. He said it's so disappointed more than angry, but there might be a way we can solve that issue, we can solve this issue. Their mother said we can go out to the attic. They said there were a lot of things up there and we could look for clothes there and borrow Mrs. Tiffin's clothes Tifton's clothes and we never met her. I know it sounds weird. It's that or we go shopping for new clothes that ain't gonna like that, Rosalyn said I'll be the one buying the clothing she said and it doesn't have to be completely formal and fancy we can just find dresses that you like.
We'll go to the attic first, and if we can't find anything clothing-wise, then we will go to the store and buy new dresses today besides, we need to buy birthday gifts for Jeffrey And I need to send a letter to Hannah Yes dear we'll send a letter to Hannah while we're out her mother reassured Rosalyn.
She's gonna tell Hannah about the party and other things but not yet she's gonna write another letter about that later she already wrote a letter that hasn't been sent yet about batting visiting the rabbits at Cagney's apartment.
It was a good idea, but first they were going to the attic all right everyone onward into the mansion, she said, and into my into the attic, she said.
Church with the five Pinder girls entered the house. The downstairs looks like a beautiful museum of things. Mother likes to collect antiques. Jeffrey said as they walked inside, the girls were surprised and shot at how beautiful everything looked.
Carefully up the stairs, she said as they walked the staircase up past the staircase second-story window story where Jefferies Jefferies's room was, and then upstairs to the attic.
If the downstairs looked like a museum, the upstairs looked like a treasure chest of things there were trunks and trunks of things and racks and racks of clothes and everything you could think of and floored territory of everything that was there.
The girls were amazed at everything around them, including Mrs. Pender Swick.
They looked through everything all the girls went their separate directions along with Jeffrey. Jeffrey disappeared with Sky and Jane as Betty wanted it off to look at things on her own.
She found wooden animals to play with. She can go do that that said churchy come Rosalyn and Elizabeth come with me she says, taking them by the hand and exploring the different outfits.
What about this one for Rosalyn churchy asked as she held up a striped dress I think this will fit her perfectly. Don't you think I think so Elizabeth said, but I don't know for sure.
Mrs. Pender saw a beautiful white dress in the back whose wedding dress is this Mrs. Tiffin's wedding dress oh heavens know it was her mother's oh right well it's a story of when Jeffrey was born. I don't remember everything that happened here I was sent here to work here when Jeffrey was born so I don't remember everything but it's quieter now that Mrs. Tifton is in charge why she misses Tifton Mrs. Pender Swick wondered and said out loud it was also the same thing that Roslyn was also wondering.
Then she saw a baddie. I'm gonna go check on Betty. She says she disappears not that I don't wanna hear this, but I don't think it's something I should be hearing Rosalyn said if she went to go check on Patty in the wooden animals and things while well Mrs. wild church told Mrs. Pender Swick, the story of Mrs. Tifton.
And how this place used to be lively when Mrs. Friendly and the general were still alive and there were parties all the time but she didn't Brenda didn't like them. Who is Brenda? That's Mrs. Tifton's name oh, OK. I might need to know that if I wanna direct her directly talk to her without calling her Mrs. Tifton all the time of course church she said.
Who do all these clothes belong to? She asked again if some of them belonged to her to Mrs. Tifton to Brenda, some belonged to her mother, and weigh in the back of the clothes from her grandmother her grandmother's clothes that's a lot of clothing. I don't know if I've ever owned that many clothes in my life why does she wanna keep every piece she's ever worn I don't know probably to hold on to some history. She has no girls to pass to know she never had a girl which sucked for her, but you know we don't know if she'll ever have any more children.
I don't know should be the type to want to bring any more kids into this world we'll see I guess.
But anyway, this is how it went. This is the time when Jeffrey was born. She ran away from home when she went to college or whatever and she met a man and slept with him and had Jeffrey, but she wasn't allowed to marry because her father was so strict the general bless his heart was still a strict man after all, and she had a fallen out with him so she ran away and had Jeffrey alone once they passed. They came back here to this house and that's when Jeffrey was born and grew up here he became kinder the old General when his wife passed and he loved his grandson. I don't know for sure, but it seemed like it, and then he passed away.
The man that Jeffrey's mother fell in love with was a musician so she doesn't care for them and doesn't like that Jeffrey likes music.
He ran off, leaving Brenda alone to raise Jeffrey by herself and that's when she hired me when he was born to take care of him. I don't think Brenda wants children to take care of. She just wanted someone to tear take for him. I don't think she wanted to raise her son my opinion. But it's not my business It's so sad Mrs. Pickwick said as she looked at the dresses, not finding one that would suit her children that much even though they were pretty clothing she just didn't care about that much for her taste for her girls one they were too rich and too they were just not the thing one of the girls hate these dresses.
And then she looked at the shoes. She didn't care for very many of them either. I just don't think there's anything that's my girl's taste. Are you sure show up the blue one for Sky? At least it matches her eyes at least but yes church it's pretty but it's just so sad. Of course, it's sad dear, but that's how it is in life.
And I was thinking about a striped dress for Rosalyn. I don't know. She said his bright yellow fabric for Betty I would make a dress for her. She said there were not any dresses. It will be small enough for her. It's not there's no indication that she kept any of the clothing off when she was a little little girl here .
So we need to figure out another plan this is Pender. Swick said I might have to take the girls shopping after all and I have my own money so I'll buy the girl's clothes and shoes and accessories. Sky and Jane came over when they were hearing everything with arrows in their hands, be careful with those Mrs. Vanwick said to her children don't worry Mom Jane said Jeffrey is gonna try and put rubber tips on them so we can use these errors. Jane did poses with the arrows then she saw all the beautiful clothes around her and went crazy for a moment. Done with weapons of mass destruction she looked at the beautiful clothes all around her. I need to find the most perfect dress. She said it was thrilling but beautiful and hard to find in one dress How about the sailor dress church she said, holding up a beautiful blue and white sailor dress.
Pretty she said, but I don't know if it's something I want Jane said but I do want these arrows. OK, then you can have the arrows as long as you get them safely proved their mother said OK. She said well by you even better or Arrows hit maybe sounds good.
How about this blue one for you sky this beautiful blue straight dress sky shook her head no she looked at a black dress. It reminded them of her mother's dress, but she didn't want that dress either even if it was elegant and beautiful looking.
Oh, your comment that was so sad. Rosalyn said, holding the hand of Bad as they came through the attic to the clothing section we're talking about Mrs. Tifton and her life at church. She said oh Rosalyn said, making a face that found this little wooden rabbit and she called it when she was by the animal section when you wanted to address it, her mother asked no I want this rabbit. I've already named him. You have enough animals how about dress that said?
Well, I guess you can't come then Jeffrey says if you can't find a dress, he looks sad and solemn. Don't worry we will do that. We will buy the address. I will buy my girls new dresses, but you can't have that rabbit. I mean you can I guess but you can't sleep with it it's not a stuffed animal. I'll buy you an even better rabbit buddy. Her mother said OK. She hit it away though and was allowed to keep it for another purpose that she was going to use it for.
I have an idea her mother said as she walked back with Maddie to get to the animals and found another wooden rabbit. What is that for? I have an idea with these deer they can be a present for someone's birthday present she asked no but I was thinking about something more special. You can hold onto these two rabbits for a while, but we can do something else with them later.
OK, Betty said but I don't want to dress right now. We gotta have a dress for the birthday party. Her mother said would you like me to go shopping and buy you a dress then have one made OK Patty said new dress good girl and I'll let you have the rabbits but we will get you a prettier one a stuffed one it'll be prettier to have with your stuffed animals. OK, Maddie said.
She had her mother with her rings fluttering. They asked her if they could have the items that they did fine though and she said yes I don't think Mrs. Tipton is gonna miss any of these things. These were not all her things. Some of these were passed down through her family, the animals and the arrows of course I don't think she'll miss those at all. If we can I can try and get rubber tips put on them she said thank you church Jane said you're welcome Jane. She says kindly.
Jane was also in spacey land for a moment trying to figure out how to get bows and arrows into her story in the hot air balloon scene or something she'll have the bearing storm some ideas on that later come girls her mother called for them I'm sorry churchy it's not your fault, dear. The clothes are lovely, but I just don't think they'd be a good fit for my daughter Understandably dear church. She said I'll give you some gingerbread to take back for your husband. That sounds lovely thanks for the gingerbread turkey. You're welcome she said as she walked them out the door giving Mrs. Pender Swick, a bag full of gingerbread.
Jeffrey kept the arrows. I will figure out how to get her to get rubber tips on these for you later he says taking them to his room by Jeffrey. They said as they left Betty held the two rabbits named Yaz and Carla and took them home with her and put them in her room for later her mother said to put them in her drawer in the bottom one maybe which would be perfect .
After that, the girls and their mother went to talk to Mr. Pender Swick could you stay with the town for a little longer until lunch after lunch church she gave you some gingerbread so you could eat that he smiled at the gingerbread thank you, dear. He says until church I said thank you too. I will. Elizabeth said to her husband, but the girls and I are going shopping. We couldn't find a thing. What were you going shopping for? He asked Jeff's birthday party is next week and well we didn't bring any dresses with us cause we weren't expecting this kind of thing and to be invited to this so I'm gonna take the girls shopping don't get upset, dear, but I think it'll be best. Also, Rosalyn can turn in her letter and mail the letter to Hannah and we can go shopping for birthday presents for Jeffrey Jeffery's birthday. Yes, he's turning 11 next week sounds good. He says all right then I want to see what you all get hound. Wanted to go. Patty said you can't come hound. She said to be good and guard daddy hound woofed he understood.
And I'll go grocery shopping for this week as well I think we're almost out of food. All right then he says I'll see you later. I'll see you later, dear as she kissed her husband now girls let's go.
Barry said to Hound to sit and say goodbye hound did not listen to her hound. Did you hear me come on says whooping her up OK Jane she said as they left. Leaving Mr. Pendu alone in the house.
Alone in the house with the hound.
ending here
In this chapter, I hope you enjoy this chapter. This was somewhat canon, but some things weren't but I hope you enjoyed it. The next chapter will not be a canon chapter, but then the next one will be, and the rest of them will mostly be canon chapters after this. I hope you enjoy this one and the next one that'll be a fun non-Cannon chapter where the girls go shopping for their dresses instead of borrowing them, I had to put this chapter in here because of that reason, but the girls didn't get their dresses. You'll have to see what happens in the next one. And what is the plan that Mrs. Pender Swick wanna have with those rabbits later you'll have to find out at the end of the story all right I'll see you in the next chapter which will be chapter 9. I'll see you then.
next chapter will be 9
