"That little computer has more processing power than the bank of hard drives in my lab." Carter announced an hour later when they'd been called to the conference room. "I've never seen anything like it and I want it. Please tell me the President agreed to the Scoobies proposal and I get to study that little gem?"
"I was hoping it would prove valuable." General Hammond looked pleased. "I didn't realize it could be that valuable. And yes, he has agreed, he's unsure about the Magic, as I thought, but agreed to at least let you show us how to access the energy so we can study it. He'd also like to open a dialog on gaining access to additional technologies, but we will help Miss Summers regardless of whether you agree to that or not."
"Oh, thank the gods!" Joyce exclaimed. "And hey, it looks like Xander's Foundation might get up and running sooner than expected, just in another reality."
"Xander's Foundation?" O'Neill asked.
"Um, yeah, my position comes with certain responsibilities." Xander answered. "Mostly to charities, but I plan to start a Foundation after college to oversee reverse engineering the tech we've been given, along with medical research. We have three megabrains in our group that are very eager to be involved."
"Private firms would be responsible for actually developing it once we understand it." Carter pointed out. "If you're doing the reverse engineering, you can outsource the manufacturing through other companies. A Foundation to do the actual research sounds like a good idea, it keeps everything in the private sector, but has and can provide oversight as well to the companies that do the manufacturing."
"And as for other technologies we have access to and are planning to reverse engineer, there's quite a bit. We may be able to work something out." Xander shrugged. "I'm not going to commit to that with out seriously thinking about it. We came prepared to trade a few things for help for Dawn. An ongoing partnership would be a separate matter and would have to benefit our reality as well."
"Agreed." General Hammond nodded. "We should get started on the testing since we have such a small window of time."
"I had a thought." O'Neill said thoughtfully. "What Xander showed us and explained to us, would that explain the Nox's abilities?"
"Major Carter mentioned them the first time we were here." Joyce glanced at her. "You said they could activate your Stargate without a device."
"They can also heal and raise a dead person and make themselves and others invisible." Carter replied. "They're so advanced technologically that they literally float their cities. We thought the abilities they displayed were some sort of technology we were unfamiliar with, but they were very disappointed in us and our stubbornness and lack of belief. They're also extreme pacifists."
"Magic can do those things as well. Although raising the dead - the people they raised, were they whole?" Xander asked.
"Whole?" Carter asked.
"Were their souls still there? Do you believe in souls, that which separates us from the animal or the monster?"
"Yes, though it's usually a matter of personal faith, not everyone believes in souls." Carter nodded. "And I am not a theologian, but I would say the people at least seemed to have their capacity to tell right from wrong in place, so taking the belief that the soul makes that possible, I'd hazard a guess that, yes they were whole."
"Without meeting them and talking with them, I can't say for sure, but Magic does make those things possible and as pacifists, if they are doing Magic, they're drawing light energy to do it." Xander explained. "They'd have to be, the dark would corrupt them, making it impossible to be a pacifist."
"Unfortunately, talking to them isn't possible, they blocked their Stargate to keep us from coming back." O'Neill shook his head. "They went all Yoda on us and said 'the very young do not always hear.' or something like that."
"I'd have loved to have the chance to talk to them." Xander smiled slightly. "Alien Magic users, the scifi geek in me would be in heaven."
"Well, on that note, Dawn, why don't we head to the infirmary first." Dr. Fraser suggested. "And begin running tests. I want to draw blood from you before and after each test, to check for any changes that result from using the energy. The tests I've set up involve a CAT scan, a MRI and such. The purpose is to see what area of your brain you're using and determine if you're stressing your body in anyway."
"While she's running those tests," Carter smiled at the young girl. "I'm going to be monitoring the items we'll have you using your ability on, to try to get as much information as possible. All of that will hopefully help us figure out a way to dampen the ability enough for you to sleep. Any questions?"
"There isn't going to be an immediate answer is there?" Dawn said softly. "It's going to take time and we'll have to come back and test the possibilities you come up with. Eventually I'll fall asleep, I won't be able to stop it. I could end up portaling again."
"No matter how many times it happens, Dawn," Xander stated very seriously. "we will keep coming after you. You will never, ever have to deal with it alone. I promise."
"We all do."
