Cold was the night. Fall had just begun in Oregon, the temperature falling to a chill perfect for the two star-crossed lovers lying on the couch in the apartment Jessica shared with her sister.
That very sister had gone out with her friends, so they had the place all to themselves, giving them the chance to be together tonight. Jessica had her arms around Jaune's neck, and Jaune had his around her waist. She rested her head on his chest, a blanket covered them both to protect from the cold. Not that they needed it, as their bodies warmed each other more than enough.
Jessica had a wide grin on her face that she couldn't get rid of. She tilted her head up to see the look on Jaune's face. "So…? How was it?"
Jaune could only stare into space, completely in awe of what they had just undergone. "Woah. That was… Wow." Such an intelligent answer.
Her smile widened more if possible. "So it was good then? You liked it?" she asked.
Finally moving, he tilted his head down to look into her dark eyes. "That was probably the greatest experience of my entire life."
His response made her giggle. "Good," she raised herself up to give him a peck on his cheek, "'cause there's more where that came from."
2 HOURS EARLIER
"Alright, so what did you want to show me today?" Jaune asked.
Jessica seemed confused. "Me?"
"You're the one from here. You're the… Earth…ian?" Jaune knew the people of Earth looked just like the people of Remnant. They even both referred to their own species as humans. However, he was unsure what to call humans from Earth.
"Earthling," Jessica provided.
"Yeah, that. So what did you want to do?"
Jessica took a moment to think. Yes, she had taken it upon herself to introduce Jaune to all that Earth had to offer. He was, after all, from an entirely different planet, even if they were both human. While it made sense she would think of things for them to do on their dates, it still felt nervewracking to have the pressure of making a good impression of her planet on someone who had never experienced it.
The late afternoon stroll they were taking through her hometown was nice. Lovely, even, but she worried it might be too boring for a space cop superhero and a magic knight who fought monsters. They had so much excitement in their lives, that a night to themselves seemed almost mundane. Not that either minded anyway when they spent time together, hand in hand.
"Okay," she began thinking. What was something they could do that they could both enjoy, while also enjoying each other's company? She didn't want to overwhelm Jaune with culture shock if something was too different for him to understand. But she also didn't want to make it boring. They had only just gotten together, and this was still one of the first few dates they would (hopefully) have.
Then, she had a sort of epiphany. "Well, what's something on Remnant that you think Earth does differently?" she tested the waters.
"Hmm," now it was Jaune's turn to consider. He also had basically no dating experience. He thought back to Beacon, and asking Weiss out on what he thought would be a good date. Taking a shot in the dark, he asked, "Do you guys have movies?"
Jessica enthusiastically took to the idea. "We have so many movies!"
This was her chance. What was, normally, a bad idea for a date that could easily be fixed by staying in. Jaune was still new to Earth, so he had no idea what new movies were out, and being in a theater meant staying quiet for the enjoyment of others. But by staying in and renting, or streaming, they could talk to their heart's content and let Jaune ask whatever questions he needed.
"What's your favorite movie? Maybe we have something similar, or in the same sort of vein as it."
"Ooh! There's this one franchise that I really liked." He felt guilty for still thinking back to his previous crush while being with his current date, but he couldn't help it. The idea of a movie date pushed his mind back to the movie he tried asking Weiss to see with him.
"What was it about?" Jessica inquired.
"It was about a cop who had to thwart all these terrorist plots he stumbled onto," he provided a quick summary for her.
Jessica stayed silent and continued to listen to him describing his favorite movie. It was a little generic, but at least it would be easier for her to find a movie Jaune would like. Or would it be harder because it was so generic?
Moving on from the plot, Jaune started talking about his favorite actor, and the lead for his favorite movie. "The star is mostly known for a bunch of bad action movies, so you get what you expect."
Jessica didn't know why, but the more he went on, the more something in the back of her mind was telling her she heard of this before. She just chalked it up to the generic plot and how common actors like that were. "What other kinds of movies has he done?"
Jaune thought back to the other roles and movies the actor had done. "Uh, well, he did a couple sci-fi movies too. There was a space movie he did about stopping the world from being destroyed by an asteroid. And there was also one where he was sent back in time to stop a new kind of disease from spreading."
Now it was all slowly clicking in Jessica's brain about why this all sounded familiar. 'No. It can't be,' she thought. 'There's no way… Is there?'
She spoke out loud to ask Jaune something to confirm her suspicions. "Jaune, what was the name of the franchise you were talking about?"
"Try Hard," Jaune smiled. "Again, it's mostly a mindless action movie, but I really like it."
"And, out of curiosity, what was the actor's name?"
"Spruce Willis," he answered simply. "Why?"
That confirmed it. The odds of two different worlds from two entirely different dimensions having the same idea for an action franchise, down to the very actor who played the lead, were astronomically small.
Then again, so were two people from each world meeting and going out in the most insane version of a long-distance relationship.
Jessica forced herself out of her stupor, refocusing on their plans. "Alright, so movie date at my place then?"
"Okay," he beamed. "So is there something similar to Try Hard on Earth?"
"Ohohoho, I have the perfect movie picked out," Jessica shook her head in mild disbelief. She pulled his hand forward as she led him back to her (shared) apartment, ready to astonish him with a classic Earth action movie.
Now
"More? There's a second one?" Jaune asked. He could never admit this to anyone on Remnant, but Earth had done it better.
The character dynamics, the tension, the dialogue - all of it made Try Hard seem almost like a parody. Even small moments like the interactions with John McClane and Sergeant Powell, or Hans Gruber. Even the one terrorist taking candy from the snack bar made them all feel more real, and he loved it.
"See for yourself." She pushed off of him, untangling herself and removing the blanket. With Jaune's body heat, and her sweatshirt and sweat pants on, she was warm enough anyway.
She picked up the remote from the coffee table to search for the sequel on the streaming service they were using. Finding it, she selected it to let Jaune see the poster before playing it. And there he saw it.
Really, it was uncanny just how similar it was to one of his favorite actors and the franchise he loved. This new actor Jaune was introduced to - Bruce Willis - in the foreground, and an airship of some kind, flying over a huge explosion. The title was in huge red letters in all caps, right under Bruce Wilis' name. "Die Hard 2". And the tagline was just under that. "Die Harder".
Seeing this as an opportunity to make Jessica smile again, he shared the ridiculous name of Remnant's version. "You're not gonna believe this, but on Remnant, the sequel was called "Try Hard 2: Try Harder- er".
"Wait, really?" This time she couldn't hold back her laughter. She'd thought the name of Remnant's film was dumb, but she didn't want to insult Jaune's favorite movie. But now, she couldn't help herself letting out a loud giggle.
Jaune chuckled with her now, loving the sound of her laughter. He pulled her close again as they loaded up the second movie. After the first, he was excited about what the sequel had in store.
What? She was just showing him Die Hard. What did you think was happening in the beginning? Get your minds out of the gutter!
